For decades microfinance was touted as a novel solution to poverty. The idea is simple – give poor women tiny loans to jumpstart small businesses and create profit. But when journalist Mara Kardas-Nelson moved to West Africa she met women who were jailed when they couldn't pay their mounting debt. In her book, “We Are Not Able to Live in the Sky: The Seductive Promise of Microfinance,” Kardas-Nelson explores the complex history that led to microfinance banking empires, the painful reality gripping women who have taken out loans and also the ways that microloans have been a successful tool in lifting people from poverty. Jim Flaherty from AARP Wisconsin joins Pam Jahnke to discuss a few holiday scams and what people can do to protect themselves. First let's start with Package Delivery Scams. Flaherty says these scams start with a text claiming your package is on hold because of an issue. They claim to be from the Postal Service, UPS or FedEx, and they include a link to a website. Once there you'll be asked to verify personal information or pay a postage or delivery fee. To avoid these scams never click on links or call phone numbers from random text messages. If you think there is an issue with a package you've ordered, go directly to the retailer's website and check for yourself. This is also the time of year when many organizations ask for end of the year pledges and donations.  But there are also Fake Charity Scams. Flaherty says people should be confident in where their money's going. Research the charity on sites such as give.org, CharityNavigator.org or CharityWatch.org to make sure it's legit and find out what percentage of their donations are actually used to serve their mission. More and more people are doing their holiday shopping online, but we've all seen the videos on the news of bold criminals stealing packages right off the front doorsteps of people's homes – often during broad daylight. We call these porch pirates. Flaherty notes that you can try and avoid porch pirates by seeing if your packages can be held by the shipper in a nearby location, placed in a secure location on your property, or delivered to a UPS or Amazon drop box. Consumers should also be aware of gift card scams as well as fake threats from utility companies.  Flaherty says all of those questions and concerns can be answered at aarp.org/fraudwatchnetworkSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

What a CreepSeason 26, Episode 5 Sun City and Apartheid in South Africa Sun City is a luxury resort and casino complex in South Africa. During the apartheid era (1948-1990s), it became infamous for hosting international artists despite the global cultural boycott of South Africa. The South African government promoted Sun City as a major entertainment destination, but for many, it symbolized the oppression and exploitation of apartheid. Artists United Against Apartheid was a collective of musicians who came together in 1985 to raise awareness and protest apartheid, mainly targeting the Sun City resort. Steven Van Zandt, a musician and member of Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band, and record producer Arthur Baker spearheaded the group. They were outraged by the continued performances of international artists at Sun City despite the call for a cultural boycott of South Africa.Trigger Warning: RacismSources for this episodeZinn Education Project: https://www.zinnedproject.org/materials/sun-city-artists-against-apartheid/ andhttps://www.zinnedproject.org/materials/strangers-in-their-own-country and https://www.zinnedproject.org/news/tdih/steve-biko/Black Past.org: https://www.blackpast.org/global-african-history/south-african-students-organization-saso/The African Activist Archive: https://africanactivist.msu.edu/ and https://africanactivist.msu.edu/organization/210-813-12/African Access Review: https://africaaccessreview.org/Rolling Stone: https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-news/steven-van-zandt-sun-city-reissue-951087/, https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-news/apartheid-rock-108260/, and https://www.ronstadt-linda.com/artrs83.htmRolling Stone Podcast Interview with Steven Van Zandt: https://open.spotify.com/episode/0U8duHoJCDxM0qLLdhzjOlTeach Rock: https://teachrock.org/lesson/sun-city-a-musical-force-against-apartheid-part-1/Cool Cape Travel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iyJQwCI7-oYArtists United Against Apartheid: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9fR2r8Qlyyk60 Minutes interview with Steven Van Zandt: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dOp-rLSRXUoAfrica's a Country.com: https://africasacountry.com/2020/01/linda-ronstadt-is-still-playing-sun-city#:~:text=Although%20Ronstadt%20was%20conflicted%20about,percent%20pure%2Dwhite.%E2%80%9DU Music.com: https://www.udiscovermusic.com/stories/little-steven-sun-city-protest-song/Little Steven Interview (2019) https://www.udiscovermusic.com/stories/summer-of-sorcery-little-steven-interview/Rosa Mannon (YouTube)/The Making of Sun City (1985) https://www.google.com/search?sca_esv=3a6b220f597eeedb&sca_upv=1&sxsrf=ADLYWIIxP_ymW_r7DZB-jNqvr6ccWlgxZw:1724106272458&q=Sun+city+apartheid+documentary&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwim3LKvjIKIAxVfhIkEHf5BH6oQ1QJ6BAhaEAE&biw=1366&bih=599&dpr=1#fpstate=ive&vld=cid:784ac663,vid:CmJC6GcVDn0,st:0Asbury Park Press: https://www.app.com/story/entertainment/music/2021/08/12/little-steven-van-zandt-sun-city-hip-hop-rap-rappers-south-africa/8113803002/ABC News: https://abcnews.go.com/Entertainment/steven-van-zandt-sun-city-helped-break-apartheid/story?id=21180715Variety: https://variety.com/2020/music/news/little-steven-interview-sun-city-apartheid-political-1203528043/Born a Crime by Trevor Noah Not a CreepThere needs to be a ceasefire in Gaza.We can't make those decisions, but we can call our representatives and let them know how we feel. The role that Charity Watch plays in ensuring that nonprofit organizations operate with transparency, efficiency, and responsibility, with guest Laurie Styron, the CEO and Executive Director of Charity Watch, a watchdog organization dedicated to holding nonprofits accountable. Watch on video!Laurie begins by explaining the organization's mission to create a level playing field for charities. "We're the only truly independent charity watchdog organization in the United States," she states. "We deeply analyze the financial information of charities to ensure that resources are directed to those making the most significant impact." Charity Watch's rigorous methodology involves scrutinizing consolidated audited financial statements and tax filings. This thorough analysis helps to detect inaccuracies and ensure that charities cannot manipulate their reporting to appear more favorable. The organization publishes ratings on an A+ to F scale, helping donors understand how efficiently their contributions will be utilized. Additionally, Charity Watch provides metrics on governance and transparency, further aiding donors in making informed decisions. One of the standout parts of Charity Watch's work is its collaboration with journalists. Lauri outline the mutual benefits of this relationship, noting that journalists amplify Charity Watch's findings, while the organization supports investigative reporting. This partnership is crucial for uncovering and addressing issues within the nonprofit sector. "We don't have boots on the ground journalists here at Charity Watch. It's really, you know, working together, putting our resources together that this great reporting kind of comes to fruition," she explain. The discussion also covers the challenges faced by smaller nonprofits, which often struggle due to declining donor numbers and the concentration of large donations in a few prominent organizations. Laurie expresses high confidence in the sector's ability to overcome these challenges, describing the importance of educating the public about the needs of smaller charities. Laurie Styron's insights provided a compelling look into the vital role that charity watchdog organizations play in safeguarding the integrity of the nonprofit sector. Her expertise and dedication to accountability serve as a reminder of the importance of transparency and responsible stewardship in making the world a better place.  Learn more. . .CharityWatch.orgFind us Live daily on YouTube!Find us Live daily on LinkedIn!Find us Live daily on X: @Nonprofit_ShowOur national co-hosts and amazing guests discuss management, money and missions of nonprofits! 12:30pm ET 11:30am CT 10:30am MT 9:30am PTSend us your ideas for Show Guests or Topics: HelpDesk@AmericanNonprofitAcademy.comVisit us on the web:The Nonprofit Show

“Reading a comic book isn't going to solve peace in the Middle East.  But I do think part of the solution is understanding both sides.” We're all shocked and saddened by the attack on Israel - and as of this episode, war with Hamas. Officials and aid groups warn of a worsening humanitarian crisis, where escalating violence has already killed thousands of people and wounded and displaced many others. And that's a longer conversation that we're not going to have on this podcast. We pray for peace, and encourage you to reach out to the people in your respective communities to check in. But we know many of you want to know how you can help.  The internet - particularly social media - is awash with misinformation, so it's especially important to verify that your contributions are going to organizations that are legitimate as well as effective. The Federal Trade Commission recommends searching charities' names alongside "complaint," "review," "rating" and "scam" to see if any red flags come up. You can also run a search on websites like like CharityWatch.org and CharityNavigator.org Beyond that, we're just a podcast. So we decided to re-air an earlier Quarantined Comics conversation about the graphic novel PALESTINE — Joe Sacco's seminal work of cartoon journalism from 1993. PALESTINE covers Sacco's travels thru occupied Palestine territory - and Israel - to embed himself with the Palestinian people - hearing their stories first-hand to understand how they lived their every day lives. Sacco wanted to get around the sanitized story the Western Media was potraying — to emphasizes the history and plight of the Palestinian people, as a group and as individuals. In PALESTINE Sacco positions himself as the westerner confronting a reality unfamiliar to most Americans at the time - concentrating on his personal experience and perspective, as well as the stories of the people he encounters, with some light history thrown in for good measure. Conversations are documented over tea, roadblocks, police action, taxis and checkpoints - which become all too familiar set pieces in Sacco's narrative journey. The book was published as 9 issues by Fantagraphics from 1993 to 1995, with a graphic novel published later to a much wider audience. Palestine is the recipient of the American Book Award, and was named as one of the Top 100 English-Language Comics of the last Century. Sacco has since gone on to publish numerous other works of cartoon journalism - covering the Middle East, Bosnia/Serbia, and the Native American plight. for which he's received recognition from TIME Magazine, the Eisners, the Harveys, and the Los Angeles Times Book Prize This is exactly the kind of conversation we want to have on Modern Minorities, which felt appropriate at this moment. This comic is relevant but distant to the ongoing crisis unfolding in the Middle East. While war and peace are not easy things to resolve, listening, learning, and reading with an open heart and mind is. We definitely encourage you to check out “PALESTINE” by Joe Sacco wherever you get your favorite books. But most of all, we hope for peace - as our thoughts are with the people of Israel and Gaza. Some organizations may use misleading language or pressure you as they solicit for a donation and this can cause distrust. Research is needed to make sure your money is going to the charity of choice and not a predator preying on your emotions. Today's guest is Laurie Styron. Laurie was appointed the Executive Director of CharityWatch, American Institute of Philanthropy in 2020. She served as CharityWatch's Senior Analyst for 16 years and thereafter as a Program Consultant through her nonprofit accounting and consulting practice. Laurie has been quoted in The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, The Wall Street Journal, NBC Nightly News, and by many other media outlets. She has also vetted charities for Good Morning America and has worked with 60 Minutes and many other news organizations on charity related investigations. Show Notes: [1:53] - Laurie shares how she started with CharityWatch and why she was drawn to working in a nonprofit. [3:31] - The founder of CharityWatch realized people were not making fact based decisions around donating to charities. [5:04] - There has been some effort to regulate and enforce how donations are used. [6:14] - Niche and very specific causes are harder to raise money for. [8:14] - The funding for regulators is insufficient for them to adequately oversee. [9:40] - Laurie explains how to vet a charity on CharityWatch and gives an example of how organizations are ranked on the site. [11:50] - Sometimes organizations will use donations as their funds to continue marketing for more donations which causes an ineffective cycle. [14:06] - A lot of donors get really focused on the salaries of charity executives. [15:05] - It is actually a red flag if board officers are not paid enough. [18:17] - There are not enough people in the United States with a masters degree that could work for a low salary. [20:46] - Going into the season of giving, avoid high pressure tactics. [22:12] - A lot of fundraisers have expert scripts that are designed to pressure you. Laurie gives tips on how to say no. [25:01] - Laurie gives advice on how to use your emotions to choose a charity for a cause you are passionate about. [26:33] - Laurie tells the story of a crowdfunding scam that was well intentioned but the money raised was not done by someone who could execute the result. [28:41] - She shares another story of fake campaigns on GoFundMe as copycats. [30:22] - You have the ability to check filings, tax information, and registrations for organizations. Crowdfunding sites do not vet their account holders. [32:36] - Cut out the middleman. Donate directly. [34:02] - It is advised to only donate on crowdfunding sites to those you know. [35:04] - It is not logical for a charity to use 100% of all donations on the cause. [37:24] - Laurie describes how charities are rated on a grade scale on CharityWatch's website. [38:35] - There are other sites that rate and rank charities but not all are reliable. [40:57] - When you are doing your research, ask yourself what the site's process is. [43:00] - Sometimes, third party platforms will hold on to the money for longer than necessary and Laurie says to donate directly. [45:47] - If you send small donations across multiple charities, your donations will be much smaller due to fees. [49:42] - Make that little bit of research you do before you donate part of your giving. Thanks for joining us on Easy Prey. QUESTION PRESENTED:Whether the exacting scrutiny the Supreme Court has long required of laws that abridge the freedoms of speech and association outside the election context – as called for by NAACP v. Alabama ex rel. Patterson and its progeny – can be satisfied absent any showing that a blanket governmental demand for the individual identities and addresses of major donors to private nonprofit organizations is narrowly tailored to an asserted law-enforcement interest.DateProceedings and Orders (key to color coding)May 28 2019 | Application (18A1224) to extend the time to file a petition for a writ of certiorari from June 27, 2019 to August 26, 2019, submitted to Justice Kagan.May 28 2019 | Application (18A1224) granted by Justice Kagan extending the time to file until August 26, 2019.Aug 26 2019 | Petition for a writ of certiorari filed. Good Morning Veterans, Family, and Friends, welcome back to the TWENTY-FIRST EPISODE of the Veteran Doctor. On this week's episode, we will discuss Scams Targeting Veterans. We will also have our Veteran News, so stick around for some great stuff ahead in our program! Veterans deserve many things: Praise. Honor. Security. Respect. Here’s what they don’t deserve: attempts to take advantage of their service. Yet every day, scammers attempt to swindle our veterans of their hard-earned benefits, steal their identity, take their life savings, and worse. According to an AARP survey, veterans are twice as likely to fall victim to scams as the population at large. Some scammers offer veterans the opportunity to refinance Veterans Affairs (VA) loans at extremely low rates. Others will pose as government agencies in order to access personal information, or offer lump sum payments up front, in exchange for signing over all their future monthly benefit checks. There have even been instances where scammers will create fake charities that target veterans or pretend to be old friends offering “sure thing” investments. Why are veterans so susceptible to these particular scams? For starters, veterans implicitly trust fellow members of the military, making them vulnerable to imposters claiming to be veterans themselves. Sometimes, because of their military experiences, veterans also find it more difficult to recognize and combat the emotional manipulation used by scam artists. That’s why the U.S. Postal Inspection Service and AARP joined forces to create Operation Protect Veterans, and provide valuable information and resources that veterans, their loved ones, and their friends can use to help protect against scammers. Together, we can fight back and take one small step to repay our veterans for the service they’ve given and the sacrifices they’ve made. Secret Veteran Benefits Scam Veterans are told they qualify for “secret” government programs or benefits that offer thousands of dollars – but first, they attempt to collect personal information or a fee. Fake Charitable Giving Request Scammers make fraudulent claims about charities benefitting wounded service members. Benefits Buyout Offer Scammers take advantage of veterans in need by offering a quick upfront buyout – usually at a fraction of the value – of future disability or pension payments. Veterans Affairs (VA) Loan Scams Scammers offer to refinance Veterans Affairs loans at extremely low rates. Bogus Employment Scam Scammers post fake job descriptions to collect personal information from a veteran’s job application, or they charge an employment fee. Fraudulent Records Offer Scammers try to charge veterans a fee to access military records or government forms—information that is actually available for free through the National Archives (for military records) and VA.gov or local Veterans Affairs offices (for forms). Veteran Affairs (VA) Phishing Scam Scammers pose as Veterans Affairs employees to get access to personal information. Update your File Scam An imposter claiming to be from a government agency attempts to get a veteran’s personal information to “update their file” so they can maintain their benefits. Aid and Attendance Scam Veterans (or their family members) receive an offer to move their assets into a living trust so that they can qualify for financial assisted-living benefits. Veterans Choice Program Scam Scammers set up a phone number nearly identical to the number veterans dial to find out if they are eligible to use approved health care providers outside of the Veterans Affairs system. Veterans call the fake number and a message prompts them to leave their credit card information in return for a rebate. Make sure to dial the correct number for the VCP: 866-606-8198. GI Bill Education Marketing Scam Scammers use deceptive marketing tactics and provide false information to push expensive for-profit educational institutions to veterans seeking to take advantage of the GI Bill for college courses. The Veterans Affairs offers a comparison tool to help you locate a school and determine your benefits. Visitwww.vets.gov/education/gi-bill. Special Deals for Veterans Scam Scammers offer special discounts for veterans on a range of products, like loans and car purchases, but the products aren’t discounted at all, or they don’t actually exist. Rental Scam A scammer posts a fake rental property on a classified ad website offering discounts for active duty military and veterans. Once they have your security deposit, you find out there is no rental property and your money is gone. Romance/”Catfishing” Scam Scammers steal a veteran’s photo and create a phony profile on a dating site to “catfish” singles looking for love. Don’t feel pressured Don’t be pressured to act immediately. If you are dealing with a legitimate outfit, they won’t try to pressure you to act before having a chance to check it out and think about it. If they do, just say “no” and hang up. These are things you should always do in these situations Consult a friend Check out the offer with a trusted family member, friend or your local veteran’s affairs office before acting. Check the security Verify any charity asking for money before sending it. There are several online services veterans can use, such as the Better Business Bureau, Charity Navigator, CharityWatch and GuideStar. American Humane’s new groundbreaking documentary, Escape from Extinction, narrated by Academy Award winner Helen Mirren, showcases the critical efforts certified zoos and aquariums are undertaking to preserve millions of species on the verge of disappearing forever. As the first pro-zoo-and-aquarium documentary of its kind, the film takes viewers on a dramatic trip around the world and through time to explore the roots of the wholesale disappearance of species in our forests and oceans, described by scientists and journalists as a “Sixth Mass Extinction.” Importantly, however, the film also shows people that there is hope as animal experts, conservationists, animal scientists, veterinarians, bioethicists and others at leading zoological organizations across the globe work feverishly to pull endangered and disappearing species back from the brink. The making of this 90-minute film took many years, passion, and tens of thousands of miles of travel. From the producers:  About American Humane Founded in 1877, American Humane is the country's first national humane organization. For 142 years, the nonprofit has pioneered many of the humane protections we have come to take for granted and today works to save, shelter, feed, and improve the lives of some one billion animals around the world.  With 91 cents of every dollar spent going directly to programs, American Humane has earned Charity Navigator’s highest “Four-Star Rating,” has been named a “Top-Rated Charity” with an “A” rating by both the American Institute of Philanthropy’s CharityWatch and Great Nonprofits, and was awarded the gold level seal from GuideStar USA. The organization has also earned the Independent Charities Seal of Excellence, was awarded inclusion on Better Business Bureau’s prestigious Wise Giving Alliance Accredited Charities list and was designated as a “Best Charity” by Consumer Reports.
