I resigned to pursue a full-time career in photography. Nina: Then between 2012 and 2016, I embarked on a documentary photography project about the life of a lion pride in Kenya. During this time, I faced the reality of the dwindling lion population - that there were only about 20.000 lions left and that the population had halved in the past 20 years. From then on, I became involved with non-profit organizations that were working for the protection of our planet. Nina: While in Sweden in 2018 I founded Milkywire - a new tech platform for impact. Welcome to the GoodViral Podcast! --- About Our Guest --- Dr. Christine Figgener. Known as the Sea-Turtle-Straw-Lady, she has raised global awareness of the issue of ocean plastic pollution. While Christine studies sea turtles, she was thrust into the international spotlight when she filmed and published a video of her research team removing a plastic straw from a sea turtle's nose. The video was a catalyst for the anti-plastic straw movement and is now considered a pivotal moment for the global awareness of plastic pollution. An avid science communicator, Christine creates content for social media and speaks at events about sea turtle conservation, fighting plastic pollution, and empowering women in science. In 2018, TIME Magazine honored her outreach and advocacy efforts by naming her a Next Generation Leader. As the Director of Science & Education for the US-based Footprint Foundation (http://footprintusfoundation.org), she travels the globe educating people about the effects of plastic pollution on our environment and human health and inspiring people to reduce their use of plastic. She is also the co-founder and scientific lead of a community-centered grass-roots conservation organization in Costa Rica (http://www.coasts-cr.org) that is protecting sea turtles. Welcome to the GoodViral Podcast. We believe that people can, and want to, do more to help others. So we invite you to join the conversation about the small and large ways that we can help people, animals, and the planet. We'll talk about real stories, Like the turtle who had a straw stuck up it's nose and how the video went viral in 2018 and changed the course of businesses, like megacorp Disney, to change their straws to paper, exchange exciting ideas, and meet with guests who are actively making a positive impact with their time on this earth. You don't have to do much to inspire a lot. Through this podcast, we want to make it easier for people, like yourself, to be involved. This is the beginning of the GoodViral movement. We are all GoodViral. We are all the community and movement towards good actions and progress for people, animals, and the planet. More to come in addition to the podcast. Subscribe and be part of the movement. When Good Goes Viral, The World Gets Better.
