Wendy Moten is a genre-defying singer-songwriter whose soaring vocals earned her the nickname “The Voice,” and there couldn't be a more appropriate description of the woman who won America's hearts when she became runner-up on the NBC show The Voice and an alumni of Overton High School , Memphis. As a solo artist, she is known for the Top 5 hit “Come In Out of the Rain” and for her solo performances in stadiums across America with artists including Michael Bolton. She's also know for her guest appearance on Kirk Whalum's FOR YOU album singing the Stevie Wonder remake, “ALL I DO”.Her 2020 solo country album, I've Got You Covered, features interpretations of classic country songs produced by Vince Gill. Moten spent two decades as one of the most in-demand background vocalists. She spent about 15 years touring the world with Julio Iglesias as his duet partner, singing in four languages and joining him onstage before world leaders. She toured many years on the Tim McGraw and Faith Hill's Soul2Soul tours, spent several years with Martina McBride, and joined Vince Gill in 2016. She has been a member of the Grammy winning Texas swing band “The Time Jumpers” for the last five years. The Voice positioned Moten as an amazing lead singer and gained her millions of new fans. Now that her impeccable reputation has spread nationally, she's working with producers including Paul Worley (Martina McBride, Lady A) and others, eager to showcase all that she can do.Most recently, Wendy received a brass note on historic Beale Street in Memphis and selected as one of the honorees from the ACM‘s and Amazon tribute to Charlie Pride another artist who contributed to country music."Still on the Run" - https://www.fbrmusic.com/Host - Trey MitchellIG - treymitchellphotography IG - feeding_the_senses_unsensoredFB - facebook.com/profile.php?id=100074368084848Threads - www.threads.net/@treymitchellphotographySponsorship Information/Guest Suggestions - ftsunashville@gmail.com

Darius Rucker gained fame in 1994 when David Letterman heard his band, Hootie and the Blowfish, on a local radio station and insisted they play The Late Show later that week. The band's debut album, cracked rear view, went on to sell over 20 million units worldwide and made them a household name. Despite all that success, Darius was always drawn to the songs and stories of country music, and for the last 16 years that's been his true calling. Now, he's got a new memoir called Life's Too Short, a book that may surprise some of his fans with its honesty and directness about some very tough issues, from estranged family to substance abuse. He also talks with Sid about his relationship with fellow country trailblazer Charlie Pride, his hopes for Black country artists in the wake of Beyoncé's new album, and why he's so excited about the upcoming 30th anniversary reunion tour of Hootie and the Blowfish. Country music is often referred to as the quintessential American music – and yet the contributions and influences of Black Americans is often erased and ignored. A prime example: Members of the Carter family were among country music's first big stars, producing some of the earliest commercial recordings in the 1920s. While the Carters are celebrated to this day, few know the name of Lesley Riddle, a Black musician who was instrumental in developing the Carter sound. Even the banjo – an instrument most associated with Appalachia where A.P. Carter and Lesley Riddle researched folk music – has had its African roots neglected over time. The rich cultural legacy of this American genre is only recently getting reexamined as African Americans and other communities of color are telling their own stories and histories of contribution to the origins of country music. As Houston's own Beyoncé drops her most recent album, “Cowboy Carter”, some are saying that an artist mostly linked to R&B and hip-hop has no business on the country charts or airwaves. But the owners of a new music enterprise in Houston would respectfully disagree as they live the country life right here in Space City. Join us as I SEE U's Eddie Robinson chats with the founders of LaChachere Music Group (LMG), a premiere country music entertainment company based in Houston and Nashville. Owners Dennis Chachere and Ahsaki LaFrance-Chachere stop by our Third Ward studios — just blocks away from Queen Bey's childhood home. We'll dive deep into why there remains tension in country music spaces when Black artists desire the spotlight — a notion Beyoncé modestly referred to in a recent Instagram post. Plus, LMG artist, singer-songwriter Caleb James, breaks out his guitar and offers up powerful vocals reminiscent of Charley Pride in an exclusive, live in-studio performance of his latest single, “Just a Few Things.”
Hey everybody! In honor of Beyonce's highly anticipated country record coming March 29, I thought it would be appropriate to dig into the country genre at large. A decent part of my childhood growing up in Georgia was influenced by country music & I developed a fondness for the genre early on. From Taylor Swift to Sugarland, Charlie Pride to Johnny Cash. Yola, The War & Treaty, Lainey Wilson. The list goes on. Song by song, I break down my personal country playlist that includes tracks from every era of my lifetime thus far. All this & more! xo https://linktr.ee/koblizzy
Just like jazz, country music was on radio from the very start. One of the earliest country music programs to be broadcast was the Grand Ole Opry, which also produced the first African-American country music star. DeFord Bailey was known as a harmonica wizard, and began appearing on radio in 1925. In 1927, Bailey had the first of a series of hit records, beginning with his trademark song, "Pan American Blues". Bailey was so popular, he became the first black artist to become a regular member of the Grand Ole Opry. He was a part of the cast until 1941, and was inducted Country Music Hall of Fame. You will hear DeFord Bailey perform on a 1940 Opry broadcast. You will also hear the second African-American to become a member of the Grand Ole Opry. Charlie Pride had 30 number one country hits during his long career, and he will play a few on the radio show "Here's to Veterans". You will hear Hootenanny, a 1947 show from CBS Radio featuring Country and folk superstars Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger, plus African-American legends Brownie McGee, Sonny Terry, Sidney Bechet, and the Coleman Brothers. We also honor Linda Martell. The South Carolina native was the first commercially successful black female country artist, and the first African-American woman to play the Grand Ole Opry in 1970, and went on to make 11 more appearances there. Linda Martell's first hit was Color Him Father, released in 1969. Our podcast will wrap up with Dude Martin's Radio Rancho from 1947. For details visit http://krobcollection.com

Lillian Scarabin (Pompy's wife). Pompy still keeps her locked up in the trailer and haven't seen Mrs. Adolph in about 3 months. He's stays down at his mama and daddy's place. Hurry up and get home (to Marilyn). Weighs 90 lbs. Pompy said to send Josh to him. Uncle Pompy wanted to adopt; send Kessie too. Merry Christmas from Lil. Helen Mae Wright "MawMaw" Adolph; Clarence Henry Adolph, Sr. talks. Thursday, December 15, 1977. He went to Port Sulphur because he wasn't feeling well and the doctor said it might be a 24 hour virus. He saw Mr. Tom and that Blackie is doing alright. Tom has a daughter in Australia. So many people trying to go that they couldn't go all at one time. Really crowded. Hope they aren't too crowded for Scarabins to come back, etc. Helen Mae was so happy to talk to Marilyn previous night. Hope they enjoyed Cairns (Jason was baptized that week). MawMaw said everyone forget her birthday except MawMaw. Excited about the Evans coming. Mrs. Lizzy wishes a Merry Christmas. Paul has lost a lot of weight and shake his feet once more like the teenagers. Paul and Allen are still little warts. Emmett Adolph gives some well wishes, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Gail Portie and Brent Edward Portie talk about Christmas and what Santa is bringing. Blake got a package. Getting a jumping horse and a bunch of other junk. Hope Santa can find us over in Indonesia. Gail gets upset seeing all the letters on her route going to others but not her. Eddie was supposed to clean the house that day but didn't. She got Wendy to clean it one day. Hope Lil' Kessie is doing okay and she's walking already, MawMaw says. Kenneth had a party that Gail and Eddie went to go. MawMaw and PawPaw invited too but won't go. Two hogs and a cow to eat and BBQ goat. Got her a black velvet blazer and "will look like a cow in it." Someone is suing H&B for getting thrown out of an airboat. Sure don't need friends like that. She figures Marilyn and D.D. are partying all the time now. Brent still giving trouble and she's "about to brain him." Brent had an old sucker he wanted Gail to have. Does Deron still have his little girlfriend? Jason got glasses after teasing Craig with his glasses. Sure hope the rest of them don't have to get glasses. Still going to ceramics. Helen Mae back on and said Wendy came over and didn't talk on the tape. Weather is beautiful and back steps are finally looking great. Enjoyed Mrs. Lizzy's visit. Helen kept Steve and Brian while Wendy took John Dirk to the doctor. Brian sure is a good little baby just laying there. Going to have to let KAGY help her out. They've really got a lot of songs about "Elvlis" Presley. Clarence is moving around more. 14:25 CT. Evans are on their way and got to Alexandria apparently. Helen can't think of a thing to say. Everyone's okay and "all of that jazz." She's going to let KAGY finish. She loves everyone. More to Me by Charlie Pride. Helen says goodbye again. Merry Christmas as Blue Bayou (Crystal Gayle) plays. She says Santa will come to us in Indonesia first because "it's closer to the North Pole (it's not) and to tell Santa that we have a MawMaw and PawPaw that's waiting for him. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/jason-scarabin/message

Sunday, September 19, 1976. Helen Mae Wright Adolph. Listening to Johnny Cash and Charlie Pride. Got Scarabin tape from Tembagapura and so glad to get it. She packed as much as she could into the package. Everyone went to church. Had dinner with Carolyn "Sister" Bergeron's and had some delicious spaghetti. She doesn't like those little "short orders" and gets tired of just meat and potatoes. She and Clarence took a nap and she and Aunt Gail Portie made strawberry ice cream. Inviting Lindy and Beth over. Johnny Cash "Sold Out of Flag Poles" (removed). MawMaw and PawPaw paid for just about all of the package. Shirt for D.D.'s birthday and film was supposed to be for Christmas and candy for D.D. PawPaw (Clarence) sent the bubble gum. She's worried about the "primitive people... killing [us kids]... they have to eat. Don't let them go too far." MawMaw thought all the people in the world had been civilized by now. "Hope it's not the lost tribes." PawPaw has been suffering with "arthur-itis... can't tell him nothing." She'd like them to go fishing. Talked a little bit about Ike Scarabin and a trailer. Lillian never gets out or come over with Ernie ('Pompy") Scarabin. MawMaw doesn't know if they're mad at her or not. Just talked to Uncle Jim and is "as nuts as ever" and about to start cobalt treatment and he's "kindly scared" to take them. Didn't get to talk to Aunt Ruth. Uncle Emmett and Aunt Yvonne came by and Aunt Yvonne has to get some tests run. Saw a wreck coming home from church and three guys died. Eddie Portie said two died and two seriously hurt... worked at the Pogey Plant. PawPaw didn't feel like talking. Uncle Nicky had to work and Aunt Annie goes by Aunt Ethel's on Sundays. Carolyn took Craig and Kyle to bowling alley in leagues and Craig did pretty good and Kyle too. She "art" not to worry about when tape will finish. Louis Adolph still same condition. Helen Mae and Clarence "lawnmowering." Had to get new hot water heater for Aunt Wendy's trailer. Went to Garage Sale with Miss Lizzy (Paul Buras' mom). Bought jacket for Brent and fan for camp for $2. It was "kindly raining." Put water tank up by no water yet and she guesses she "didn't pray hard enough." Brought tapes to Ernie and Lil to listen to tapes. Went to Scarabins and Gertrude (Grandma) told Louis (Grandpa) Scarabin to quiet down or he's going to have another heart attack. Lillian had been sick and Miss Lizzy got a new car (Maverick, blue and white) "prettier than Gail's." Gave Miss Lizzy a Book of Mormon. She's about the "only one that would read it and listen or study it or whatever... or maybe not." Hadn't mail a "cotton-pickin' thing." Wished the sisters would write to give her a break and can't wait until all daughters are all home so she won't have to write. Aunt Wendy said Marilyn said she can have all her Wish Books. Johnny (Lil's son) was visiting from Florida. Janelle's baby is so cute and Jim is "proud as a peacock." Everyone laughed about the gourds and "balls out." --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/jason-scarabin/message

This month's guest has wasted little time making the most of his growing career. It hasn't been that long since he was literally living out of his car on the streets of Nashville. His debut single shot to #1 in November 2018. His 2nd single also went to number 1 and as I put together this podcast, his 3rd single has cracked the top 10. He's also won awards (2021 CMA New Male Artist). Done TV shows (Dancing With The Stars). Written a children's book (My Voice Is a Trumpet). Had a couple kids (Naomi and Aayden). Sang with Elton John (The Lockdown Sessions). Started a production company (JAB Entertainment). All while reminding anyone who brings it up that country music isn't, never has been nor ever should be a space reserved for white artists only. The lengths it took to set up this interview is a good way to introduce you to Jimmie Allen. It took almost six months before we were able to connect. Once, I managed to pin him down while he was en route to a concert right the day after one of his appearances on Dancing With The Stars. And it was going great until he hit a bad cell service area, and our next chance didn't come along for another month. That he never gave up on doing this interview- which is such a minor thing in his life – says a lot about who he is. And that drive, that thing that keeps him daring to dream some really big, challenging dreams while still making sure to connect with some schlep DJ with a podcast...? I think it can all be traced back to challenges he first had to face as a young kid, and the people who helped him overcome them. You put that kind experience together with real talent as a singer and a songwriter, and you've got something special. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Red has also had long stints as a solo artist in the nightclub world which provided him with an active entertainment career and food on the table. His latest project include a original Christmas song “MARY CAN I HOLD THE BABY?” which Deacon hopes to make into a full length play. This was one of the most difficult shows I've put together mainly because it reflects on the most recent artists we have lost , and in some instances due to the Covid Pandemic. On the bright side of things, I'm sure you'll enjoy the incredible music legacy these artists left us with. Charlie Pride, Joe Diffie and Jim Ed Brown to name a few. Enjoy the show my friends and please share with someone you love. Drop me a note or a request at winradionetwork.com and let me know what you want to hear.
This month's guest, Matraca Berg, grew up in a musical family. Her mother Icee Berg (yep, real name!) was a songwriter and session singer who at first wasn't crazy that her daughter wanted a career in country music but later became her best teacher. Her stepfather, Dave Kirby, was a songwriter whose credits include the Gene Watson classic I've Got Memories to Burn and Charlie Pride's Is Anybody Goin to San Antone. The family lived in Nashville and often hosted parties featuring writers and singers. So, it stands to reason that being around that kind of environment would kinda rub off on a person. But in Matraca's case, it was more than just a smudge; she was gifted the talent- and the drive- to have over 50 of her songs recorded, including several that helped female artists to dominate country music in the 1990s like they have never before... or since. Born the 4th of 11 children to poor sharecroppers in Mississippi, Charlie taught himself how to play guitar when his mother bought him his first one at age 14, but it was his love of baseball that got Charlie picked for the NY Yankees farm team. Unfortunately for Charlie, but great for country music fans, an injury sidelined his baseball career and propelled him into a giant name in the recording industry. Nominated for a Grammy, Charlie was selected as Country Music's Entertainer of the Year in 1971. It took tremendous confidence and a great sense of self worth that helped Charlie overcome the trials of being Country Music's first African American singer. You'll hear that confidence along with his eloquence and sense of humor when I had the pleasure of speaking with him on this KRAK radio interview.Photo: GREG MATHISON, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons

Kenny Hess has now been a part of the music industry since the 80's when he started a life of making music for a living. Born in Outlook Saskatchewan, music was always a part of his life and at just 15 Kenny started traveling the country singing the songs of such greats as Charlie Pride, Don Williams and Merle Haggard and it wasn't long before he was singing his own songs and sharing the stage with those very same great artists. A prolific songwriter, Kenny was noticed by Nashville' legendary songwriter Harlan Howard and soon Kenny began writing for Harlan Howard songs one of the most prestigious publishing houses in the country. This also led to a publishing and recording deal with Curb records Nashville. Though he has been blessed with a huge voice and songwriting skills, Kenny' real strength has always been his ability to hold a crowd of any size in the palm of his hand whether it be with his voice, his sense of humor, or his heartfelt songs of life. His show is comprised of a combination of classic country songs that have inspired him, some of the songs that Kenny has written for other artists or for himself as well as some fantastic stories of his life and loves in music. Kenny has had a very successful career with several songs reaching the top 40 nationally over 100 of his original songs recorded and 14 critically acclaimed CDs to his credit. He has also won or been nominated for several Canadian Country Music Awards and BC country music awards including Male vocalist of the year, Songwriter of the year, producer and Album of the year. In 2015 Kenny was called back home to BC where he was given the honor of being inducted into the Country Music hall of Fame The last few years have been busy seeing Kenny not only perform his usual slate of dates as the headline act but also had him working shows and opening for artists like Brad Paisley, Randy Travis, Big and Rich, Dwight Yoakam, Reba, Merle Haggard and many more… This past august Kenny had the extreme privilege of being asked by Mr. Willie Nelson to join him on stage… An honor Kenny will never forget. “A natural born entertainer with a huge voice and great songs makes for a very special show. The Naked Vibes Show features conversations with musicians, artists & healers to ignite your creative genius & elevate you in your spiritual growth. This episode features musician/songwriter, Reggie Rueffer of Spot (rock band formerly with Interscope Records) & touring violinist for Charlie Pride. His other bands/projects include The Hochimen & Mildred. In this radio archive, Reggie joined me in the studio to play live & to share his insights on the creative process. Some spicey conversation ensues. SHOW NOTES: 2:34 - SONG: "Hymn" from the Heaven, the novel Soundtrack. Written & performed by Reggie Rueffer. This special version is only available on the complimentary CD that comes with the book. 7:57 - Story of how “Hymn” came to be. Reggie talks, with humor, about how easily he was able to write about religious issues mixed with sexual issues - & with the added challenge of writing from a woman's perspective. 10:40 - Example of how creative ideas are not our own, but are shared universally. 11:03 - Sexual repression brought on by outside forces shapes our relationships & ability to express ourselves. 11:56 - Sexual energy can be channeled through artistry & music. Great examples - Scott Weiland (Stone Temple Pilots) & Prince. 13:08 - SONG - LIVE PERFORMANCE: “Brush with Religion” - Tierra del Gato - Hochimen. 17:33 - Reggie & his brother, Chad, performed on the Local Honey Holiday Mix show with my sister, Kelly, & me. Reggie's favorite part of the night was when we did “Noelle Nouvelet” as Brothers & Sisters. 18:34 - Broad range of musical influences & perspectives - classical training from SMU + rock star bands Mildred (XTC-inspired rock 'n roll) & Spot. 19:17 - Mildred lyrics were inspired by Reggie's experience as a Christian. 19:54 - Perceptions of Frankly Scarlet, the band I shared with my sister, were often that it was a Christian band because we sang about Love & Consciousness. You can't remove who you are from your art. 20:38 - Expanding, through art, leads to places that are larger than religion. Music helps people connect on deeper levels. 20:56 - Great pop songs have always been written about “boy meets girl”. Reggie originally wrote more about the issues of the day. 21:36 - True that you're perfectly who you are. Perfectly human. Mistakes & all. Recognizing this creates so much freedom. 22:05 - Fun with the collaborative process between Reggie & me for the Heaven soundtrack, on “Exposed”, by fictitious band XXX. 23:43 - Bands that play live exactly as the recording sounds often have no passion. It becomes craft instead of art. Art has to stretch. It can bring the darker human emotions a little closer to the surface, so we can recognize we're not alone in those feelings. Example: Van Gogh's paintings. 25:25 - SONG: “Exposed” - XXX - Heaven soundtrack. Only available on the complimentary CD that comes with the novel, Heaven. Written by KB Cain & R. Rueffer. Performed by Reggie Rueffer. 29:43 - Mistakes can turn out to be better than the original. When a voice cracks or someone hits the "wrong" chord, it can be a beautiful serendipity. 30:51 - The version of “Hymn” that can only be found on the CD that comes with Heaven, a novel is the original demo version & has more of a raw sexuality to it, more vulnerability. The Hochimen version on Tierra del Gato, called “Hymn To Them All” is more polished. 32:38 - Reggie is an accomplished violinist & fiddle player, touring with Charlie Pride. 33:31 - SONG - LIVE PERFORMANCE: “Hymn To Them All” - violin instrumental. 36:37 - What happens when an artist loses himself in “The Zone” & creativity flows without filters. 38:40 - Teaching young people that you have to learn skill first. Important to put in the hours to learn what you're doing - then you can let go to the passion of the music, the art. 39:23 - It's just like making love - think less & be a better lover!
