The new series of Dior Talks – hosted by Paris-based journalist Katya Foreman – is dedicated to the eagerly anticipated ninth edition of Dior Lady Art. Eleven global artists have been invited to transform the iconic Lady Dior handbag into a unique piece of art.Our latest guest, the celebrated Chinese artist Liang Yuanwei, takes the bag's status as an emblem of artisanal craftsmanship with rich cultural connotations to new heights, interweaving references to her impasto “Golden Notes” series and Ru ware from the Song dynasty. Blending ancient and new techniques, her captivating Lady Dior resembles a porcelain object, with the artist's textured brushstrokes evoking crackles in the glaze. Layered with symbolism, the bag's edges in antique gold metal echo traditional gilding techniques, while its color recalls the signature celadon green shade of Ru ware. Its creation required a series of painstaking processes. The artist's calligraphic brushstrokes, which differ in power and do not overlay the other, were reproduced in resin using a 3D printing process before being broken into pieces, like a puzzle, and then recomposed on a velvet base.Download the episode to learn more about the artist's fascinating Dior Lady Art journey and how this experimental process, and collaborating with the House's artisans, has impacted her creative approach.Hosted by Ausha. Dr. Shamani Jain is a scientist, clinical psychologist, musician, and founder of the Consciousness and Healing Initiative, who wants to bring about a world where our health doesn't stop and start with a managed care system dominated by the bottom line of pharmaceutical corporations and insurance companies. Her focus is on psychoneuroimmunology and biofield therapies, a catch-all term introduced by the National Institutes of Health to encompass everything from acupuncture to reiki to meditation. Jain's work has shown that the allopathic pill and surgery based approach to well-being often falls short of its ambitious promises - which would be terribly depressing, if not for the fact that so much of our welfare seems to depend a lot on things that are free - rest, communion with others, and a mindful existence. Welcome back to THE IAS COMPANION. Follow us on YouTube: www.youtube.com/@IASCompanion. In today's lecture, we will discuss quasi-experimental methods in psychology. Quasi-experiments are research designs that allow researchers to evaluate the effects of an intervention or treatment without the full control over variables typically afforded by true experimental designs. These methods are invaluable in real-world settings where random assignment is impractical or unethical. While they have limitations, careful design and statistical controls can enhance their validity. Understanding these designs is essential for interpreting research findings and applying them in real-world contexts. #UPSC #IASprep #civilserviceexam #IASexamination #IASaspirants #UPSCjourney #IASexam #civilservice #IASgoals #UPSC2024 #IAS2024 #civilservant #IAScoaching #aUPSCmotivation #IASmotivation #UPSCpreparation #IASpreparation #UPSCguide #IASguide #UPSCtips #IAStips #UPSCbooks #IASbooks #UPSCexamstrategy #IASexamstrategy #UPSCmentorship #IASmentorship #UPSCcommunity #IAScommunity #UPSCpreparation #IASpreparation #UPSCguide #IASguide #UPSCtips #IAStips #UPSCbooks #IASbooks #UPSCexamstrategy #IASexamstrategy #UPSCmentorship #IASmentorship #UPSCcommunity #IAScommunity

Much has been said about increasing prevalence of game-farm genes in mallard populations, but evidence has been scarce on whether these genes produce differences in behavior and demography…until now. Pivotal research by Dr. Ben Luukkonen reveals that game-farm hybrids differ from wild mallards in their movements, migration, habitat use, and nest incubation. The conclusion? Game-farm hybrids are different, and not in a good way. In this episode, Dr. Luukkonen and Dr. John Coluccy share details of these results and much more. What are harvest rates of Great Lakes mallards, and what role has hunting played in the decline, if any? Could the loss of over 3 million acres of CRP from this landscape be partly to blame? Field Researchers continue to cite various forms of tree structures as firm evidence and/or proof of the existence of Sasquatch. Logical reasoning strategies are used to argue that only a Sasquatch could possibly create these structures based on the structure's size/height, configuration and location (among other factors). This apparently continues to fall on deaf ears or is otherwise viewed as insufficient proof within the scientific community, (what isn't!). In this episode, I will attempt to demonstrate how experimental design could be used to begin to scientifically explore attributions of tree structures to Sasquatch, while simultaneously controlling for the primary “rule out” influence of humans. This will be presented as a “work in progress” to illustrate how psychological experimental design can isolate the Sasquatch influence in creating these structures. Audience feedback and suggestions will be integrated into the experimental design as this represents a creative process best accomplished using multiple minds! Yet another “must see” for the experiential field researcher hoping to prove the existence of Sasquatch!!!This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/4602609/advertisement

It's the Season 10 finale of the Elixir Wizards podcast! José Valim, Guillaume Duboc, and Giuseppe Castagna join Wizards Owen Bickford and Dan Ivovich to dive into the prospect of types in the Elixir programming language! They break down their research on set-theoretical typing and highlight their goal of creating a type system that supports as many Elixir idioms as possible while balancing simplicity and pragmatism. José, Guillaume, and Giuseppe talk about what initially sparked this project, the challenges in bringing types to Elixir, and the benefits that the Elixir community can expect from this exciting work. Guillaume's formalization and Giuseppe's "cutting-edge research" balance José's pragmatism and "Guardian of Orthodoxy" role. Decades of theory meet the needs of a living language, with open challenges like multi-process typing ahead. They come together with a shared joy of problem-solving that will accelerate Elixir's continued growth. Key Topics Discussed in this Episode: Adding type safety to Elixir through set theoretical typing How the team chose a type system that supports as many Elixir idioms as possible Balancing simplicity and pragmatism in type system design Addressing challenges like typing maps, pattern matching, and guards The tradeoffs between Dialyzer and making types part of the core language Advantages of typing for catching bugs, documentation, and tooling The differences between typing in the Gleam programming language vs. Elixir The possibility of type inference in a set-theoretic type system The history and development of set-theoretic types over 20 years Gradual typing techniques for integrating typed and untyped code How José and Giuseppe initially connected through research papers Using types as a form of "mechanized documentation" The risks and tradeoffs of choosing syntax Cheers to another decade of Elixir! Modern environments are awash with pollutants. The book Citizens of Worlds is the first thorough study of the increasingly widespread use of digital technologies to monitor and respond to air pollution. Drawing on data from the Citizen Sense research group, which worked with communities in the US and the UK to develop digital-sensor toolkits, author Jennifer Gabrys argues that citizen sensing promises positive change—and also collides with entrenched power structures. What are worlds? Who can do environmental monitoring? How might different means of computation tell a more complete story about pollution and its effects? In this episode, Jennifer talks with Helen Pritchard about Citizen Sense's collaborative research in northeastern Pennsylvania and southeast and central London.Jennifer Gabrys is chair in Media, Culture, and Environment in the Department of Sociology at the University of Cambridge. I'm Josh Cooperman and this is Convo By Design with a journey south, Mexico City to be exact, to speak with Sten Studio founder Jose Miguel Schnaider. We are talking about stone, sculpture, lighting, art and so much more. Designer Resources ThermaSol - Redefining the modern shower experience. Episode 271 featuring Mitch Altman Moya Living -  Beautiful, durable powder coated kitchen, bath & outdoor kitchen cabinetry Design Hardware - A stunning and vast collection of jewelry for the home! From a family quarry to original works of art suing beautiful gifts painstakingly unwrapped from their multi-million year formation process, that is both a big responsibility and an unparalleled opportunity to create something truly unique.  Using the minerals and materials unearthed using select manufacturing techniques, Juan Miguel crafts some incredible works. But not alone. This is also a conversation about collaboration and teamwork.  It dawned on my while writing the preamble for this episode that a consistent and constant theme that is present in every one of the 400+ previous conversations and from each of the 800+ creatives I have spoken with over the past 10 years, there is this state of wonder I feel. I was having a conversation recently with the CEO of a rather large company. We were just chatting about life in general and I realized something. My friend's creative pilot light had gone out. As we delved deeper, it became evident that there was no joy in what he did, only obligations. The need to keep things going forward. Sales, R & D, stock price, no bad press, no scandals… Burnout will surely follow at some point, and he knows this. The goal, for him, is to hang on as long as possible. Get as close as he can to the day when he can eventually cut the cord and let go. Think about that for a moment. Just keeping all the balls in the air versus living each breath in a state of awe and wonder. Nobody I know has reached that level of awareness, some are far closer than I but the goal is to eventually get there. Why so philosophical today? Not sure, but I think it has to do with this conversation and the idea of walking through a yard of newly unearthed minerals, geodes, and all different shapes of materials knowing that I would have the opportunity to craft them into something completely unique. Art. Isn't that what life is all about? Taking the unknown, opportunity, discovery and crafting it into something you can be proud of? Thank you Juan Miguel. I enjoyed our chat and love what you do. Thank you CXD partners and sponsors; ThermaSol, Moya Living and Design Hardware for your continued support. And thank you for taking the time every week to share some time together and hear the stories behind sublime design. S., Hicks, S. C. Abstract: Pooling cells from multiple biological samples prior to library preparation within the same single-cell RNA sequencing experiment provides several advantages, including lower library preparation costs and reduced unwanted technological variation, such as batch effects. Computational demultiplexing tools based on natural genetic variation between individuals provide a simple approach to demultiplex samples, which does not require complex additional experimental procedures. However, these tools have not been evaluated in cancer, where somatic variants, which could differ between cells from the same sample, may obscure the natural genetic variation. Here, we performed in silico benchmark evaluations by combining sequencing reads from multiple single-cell samples in high-grade serous ovarian cancer, which has a high copy number burden, and lung adenocarcinoma, which has a high tumor mutational burden, confirming that genetic demultiplexing tools can be effectively deployed on cancer tissue using a pooled experimental design. We demonstrate that this strategy provides significant cost savings through pooled library preparation. To facilitate similar analyses at the experimental design phase, we provide freely accessible code and a reproducible Snakemake workflow built around the best-performing tools found in our in silico benchmark evaluations, available at https://github.com/lmweber/snp-dmx-cancer. In this first episode of 2020, Greg and Patrick welcome the new year by offering what listeners have come to expect: no apparent plan for the episode, followed by rambling, circular, and barely internally-consistent discussion. At least they are, well, reliable. In fact, their meanderings lead them to a discussion of just that topic -- reliability. In an impromptu segment they call "Grumpy Old Man & Village Idiot" the Quanti-dudes talk about the often-forgotten but absolutely critical importance of securing high quality measures when addressing substantive research questions, and the severe consequences of failing to do so. In addition to grousing about reliability, they also discuss: questions you can ask in a dissertation defense when you have no idea what is actually going on, Walmart bathroom scales, frisbees on the lawn, toxic masculinity, carnival barkers, sunscreen, Clint Eastwood, and sibling IQ tests. Easter egg alert: listen for a hidden bark from Greg's dog Gus who wants to be let outside!

3D rendering technology, 3D printers, CNC Routers, inexpensive recycled materials and a whole new generation of open-minded designers and clients have led to an era where experimentation is celebrated, but tricky. Now that architecture firms can start to create some of their own built elements, what are the consequences for designers presenting themselves as makers? What are the pitfalls of this new era of experimentation, where architects can iterate at blinding speed? Do we sacrifice quality for quantity? Or are more iterations, faster, actually better?

Is it possible for preclinical researchers to improve the quality of their cardiac and metabolic animal studies by incorporating protocols and strategies aimed at reducing bias? Listen as Deputy Editor Merry L. Lindsey (University of Nebraska Medical Center) interviews lead author Julie R. McMullen (Baker Heart & Diabetes Institute) and content expert Lisandra de Castro Brás (East Carolina University) about the study by Weeks et al., the latest article in the AJP-Heart and Circulatory Physiology Cores of Reproducibility in Physiology series. McMullen and co-authors conducted a short survey of preclinical research colleagues about how animal studies were being performed, with a focus on blinding, randomization and allocation concealment. The survey was followed by skills training aimed at improving practices, such as computer-generated methods for randomization and de-identifying drugs and interventions. Why take on this project? By providing basic scientists with tools to correctly randomize animals, and rationale to pre-specify inclusion and exclusion criteria, pre-specify endpoints, and appropriately address negative data, McMullen and collaborators hope to equip investigators with tools and knowledge to remove unconscious bias. This includes the encouragement of team science among smaller labs to allow for improvements in experimental design such as allocation concealment, which requires more personnel. This engineer would be in charge of designing electronic circuits and prototyping those same systems, as well as putting their work to work, testing new aerial systems and sensors that are often first to market for the entire industry. Microdrones, a company spanning six continents, touts itself as the world's largest R&D force for commercial drones. Spexard, a native of Germany where the position is based, is known for her ability to work with people from all over the world. She jokes that her ultimate recruit is someone who has “literally more than two hands,” but her ideal candidate has experience with modeling and simulation, modification and troubleshooting of prototypes and experience in UAS technologies. The most interesting part of the position, and what makes it so exciting, is what can't even be mentioned on the podcast. With such innovative drone technology, the shroud around it can be opaque to the rest of the market and outside world. But in this conversation, Spexard does clue us in on what it's really like to be a engineer for Microdrones. It's not usual day-to-day work; your technological ideas could actually come to life within years as a top notch technology. It's a dream job for any engineer.

Sound experimental design is of vital importance when conducting any scientific experiment. Choices made at the design stage have the potential to drastically impact the results of any study. A strong experimental design gives the researcher an improved chance of a successful experiment. A poorly considered or implemented design can have a ruinous effect on the investigation. In this short course basic elements of experimental design such as randomization, replication, and blocking will be discussed using real world experiments. Basic and more advanced designs will be presented. Course files available here: www.lisa.stat.vt.edu/?q=node/1777.
