One of Europe's largest cruise operators, MSC Cruises, has ordered two new giant ships to be built at France's Saint-Nazaire shipyard. It's set to boost the local economy, though cruise ships often draw criticism for their environmental impact. Plus, Sesame Street's creators have struck a deal with Netflix for the new season to be streamed on the platform, after a recent decision by Donald Trump to cut funding for PBS threatened the future of the iconic children's programme.
This week we celebrate 18 years of marriage. Whaaaat?! YES. It is our wedding anniversary, and I invited my favorite human (my husband!) back on the podcast to celebrate with me. We're getting real about what it actually looks like to love each other out loud—not just in Instagram-worthy moments, but in hallway hellos, morning text rituals, and that one time on a cruise ship when we totally misunderstood each other... and turned it into one of our best love lessons. This isn't a “how-to” episode. It's a behind-the-scenes look at how we LIVE the frameworks I coach on—✨Soul-Centered Communication, the Power of One, and honoring difference with delight.✨ You'll hear what it sounds like to co-create emotional safety, savor the simple stuff, and stay connected—even when you're not on the same page. Whether you've been married 18 years or 18 months, my hope is that you FEEL the energy under our words: grounded, loving, deeply human. ✨This is love in real life. Not perfect. But deeply, intentionally, joyfully true.✨ Here's what we cover: Why how we greet each other matters more than grand gestures What we've learned about honoring differences (especially when one of us uses 10,000 words... and the other 10!) The small rituals that keep our connection sacred How a cruise ship miscommunication became a masterclass in partnership and one of our forever favorite marriage bloopers Why we sometimes choose rose-colored glasses... on purpose It's tender. It's playful. It's full of gold. I can't wait for you to listen and I absolutely want to hear your favorite takeaway! Come back here and hit reply or message me on instagram. The chief suspect in Madeleine McCann's disappearance, who is currently serving a sentence for a rape conviction, is set to be released from prison in Germany later than originally scheduled. Christian Brückner, 48, was convicted of raping a 72-year-old American tourist in Portugal in 2005 and had been scheduled for release in September, but this could now be pushed back to early next year. He has never been charged in the McCann case and denies any involvement in her disappearance in 2007. UK Correspondent Gavin Grey talks to Heather du Plessis-Allan about the case, the Ukrainian man charged with arson at Kier Starmer's property and more. LISTEN ABOVE. New reports show cruise ships are giving New Zealand a miss. Next season will see a 28 percent decrease in port visits nationwide. Cruise Association CEO Jackie Lloyd says cruise ship companies have a negative perception of New Zealand. “They think New Zealand's unwelcoming, that we're not wanting crews, and they're reflecting that in their deployment decisions for the next couple of years,” she said. Send us a textHello, passionate cruisers! This is Paul and this week on The Joy of Cruising Podcast, I am delighted to welcome Presley Pfereka, a crew member for Azamara luxury cruise line. I have long observed with awe and fascination cruise ship crew from the Captain to entry-level crew members and have hosted on The Joy of Cruising Podcast a cross-section of ship crew, both former as well as active over the past years. I would love to delve into their lives in an in-depth manner both on the home front as well as at sea. I have often noted that if I had the resources this is a book project I would love to pursue. While I can't begin to do justice to that in an hour or so podcast episode, my discussion with Presley affords us a brief, unique look at ship life through her eyes. The variety of crew, staff, officers, and guest performers who have guested on the podcast range from childcare associates to maitre d' to Captains, acrobats, magicians, to guest singers and comedians from all over the world. Presley is my first guest from Zimbabwe, in the Southeastern part of Africa. I first found out about Presley by way of an article I read in Conde Nast Traveler, “What It's Like to Be a Waitress on a Cruise Ship,” by Ashlea Halpern. Presley is a 37-year young lady from Easten Zimbabwe, Manicaland Province. She finished high school and started working at a young age as an organizing secretary for a non-governmental organization). This was after her parents passed on. Presley has two daughters aged 17 and 6. She moved to South Africa in search of greener pastures and worked a variety of jobs. In 2012 Presley met a fellow Zimbabwean who introduced her to Open Distance Learning with the University of South Africa. She enrolled with the University and attained a Higher Certificate in Business Management and then Registered for Bachelor of Commerce In Business Management which she is still pursuing. After coming across an advertisement on LinkedIn regarding cruise ship job interviews to take place in Cape Town in 2023, Presley applied as it was her wish to travel and work on cruise ships. This led to her being hired by Azamara January 2024 as Assistant Waitress. In November 2024 she got promoted to Administration as a Payroll Purser.Find Presley online YouTube: presleypfereka3174TikTok: @Presley PeeInstagram: presley_pee87Facebook: Presley PeeEmail: pee.pfereka@gmail.comSupport the showSupport thejoyofcruisingpodcast https://www.buzzsprout.com/2113608/supporters/newSupport Me https://www.buymeacoffee.com/drpaulthContact Me https://www.thejoyofcruising.net/contact-me.htmlBook Cruises http://www.thejoyofvacation.com/US Orders (coupon code joyofcruisingpodcast)The Joy of Cruising https://bit.ly/TheJoyOfCruisingCruising Interrupted https://bit.ly/CruisingInterruptedThe Joy of Cruising Again https://bit.ly/TheJoyOfCruisingAgainIntl Orders via Amazon
Cruise ships might look all shiny and glamorous, but there are hidden parts you'll never see unless you know where to look. Beneath the fancy restaurants and pools, there are whole maze-like areas just for crew members. Some ships even have secret morgues and jails tucked away in the lower decks. There are also hidden maintenance tunnels, storage rooms, and places where broken furniture and supplies get stashed. It's basically like a whole secret city operating underneath the vacation fun. Next time you're on a cruise, just remember — there's a lot more going on behind the scenes than you realize!
Captains are supposed to be the last to leave their sinking ships, not the first. But that required act of valor has always been easier said than done — as evidenced by the story of the 1903 wreck of the S.S. South Portland off Cape Blanco. Is it just me or has the cost of playing bingo on your average cruise ship (as opposed to Bingo Cruises), gotten out of control? Especially since the amount of actual games being played is minimal. That's one of things on my mind. The other is, where are all the bingo players I typically see going? Are they burning out?
For many people, the idea of living part, or full-time, on cruise ships sounds like a dream-like paradise. In my time cruising around Substack, one of the more interesting personalities I've come across is a fellow named Wez, aka Obsidian Blackbird. who writes “Memories of a Post Grunge Drifter”, a sort of ongoing autobiographical project that winds its way across the end of Generation X and the turn of the new millennium through the eyes of a vagabond Kiwi. Along the way, Wez shows us how the adversity of his family situation was dealt with, or not, via running away from home and leading a life not unlike that lived by another friend and former guest of this show, A.M. Hickman. A journey that spans the Tasman Sea and Pacific Ocean while straddling cultural shifts of rural living in the British Empire's furthest flung outpost to the streets of early 2000s Sydney and Toronto, and onward into the weirdness of post Covid America, Wez's life has been lived with both hands firmly gripping the short and curlies. This interview is as entertaining as his writings, often accompanied by his own illustrations, which you ought to check out here -https://obsidianblackbird.substack.com/A brief selection of titles -The Cruise Ship as a Spiritual ExperienceOperation Finnish PrincessI Was a Gypsy Roadside Rug SalesmanEscaping From Bad Men that look out for Teen RunawaysSnow White and The Seven Starving BogansWez is nothing if not prolific; those five titles barely scratch the surface of his output - if you've got the time and inclination, there is so much more. And after all of that, he's going back to New Zealand to start a ‘Right Wing Hippie Commune'. Almost as if his story is just getting started at the ripe old age of 47.Thanks for listening, and remember to not pass judgement on the hitch-hikers.Questions, comments, suggestions, corrections and Hate Mail are welcomed and strongly encouraged - gordilocks@protonmail.com

Vacations are supposed to be carefree—a time to disconnect from stress and reconnect with loved ones. But for the Bradley family, a Caribbean cruise aboard Rhapsody of the Seas became the start of a nightmare. Just three days into their trip, 23-year-old Amy Lynn Bradley vanished without a trace. No signs of struggle. No clear answers. How does someone disappear from a ship filled with thousands of people? And why, decades later, are there still whispers that Amy may be alive? This is the story of a young woman who set sail with her family… and never came home.
Originally from the village of Mutungo, Uganda (near the country's capital of Kampala), Jon Muq's journey to his current life of touring with an Austin, Texas home-base has been unconventional. Onboard the Cayamo cruise earlier this year, we talked to Jon about his childhood experiences, including fetching water with friends and "We Are the World," which was the first Western music he ever experienced. He also recounts the emotional reunion with his twin sister at the Cambridge Folk Festival, revealing how distance from his family has shaped his identity as an artist. He had not seen her, his friends, or any family before that for many years due to leaving originally to work on a cruise ship (the same line we were cruising on!) and work visa realities.Jon discusses the moment he first held a guitar at age 19, which felt like a natural fit. He shares how traditional Ugandan music influences his sound and how he began learning English through song before mastering the language. Jon speaks about his experience with food; growing up, his family was food insecure. When he started performing on cruise ships, he was overwhelmed by the amount of food available. He explained the ever-present googly-eyes on his guitar, which tie into learning about distinct cultural differences between America and Uganda. Like many countries, it is normal in Uganda for male friends to hold hands. This and many cultural differences were learned the hard way for Jon, so the eyes on the guitar symbolize an always smiling friend that will be there for him. He wraps up this episode of Basic Folk with a great lightning round giving us the inside scoop on the best food aboard Cayamo, his dream collaboration and, in his opinion as an industrial design student, what's the most beautiful product in the world.Follow Basic Folk on social media: https://basicfolk.bio.link/ Sign up for Basic Folk's newsletter: https://bit.ly/basicfolknews Help produce Basic Folk by contributing: https://basicfolk.com/donate/ Interested in sponsoring us? This week, in Bethesda, Maryland, a twisted man quietly kills, for years, using an odd alter ego & even eating parts of certain victims. He is as disturbed as his serial murdering crimes, drawing strange pictures, and confessing to a man that he thinks is Jesus! He comes from a strange background, having the darkest things in common with his older brother. One of the craziest stories that we've ever done!Along the way, we find out that giving your kid certain nicknames may screw them up for life, that you shouldn't compete with your brother in some areas of life, and that even if you tell police where all the bodies are, it probably won't make the voices stop!!New episodes every Thursday!Donate at: patreon.com/crimeinsports or go to paypal.com and use our email: crimeinsports@gmail.comGo to shutupandgivememurder.com for all things Small Town Murder & Crime In Sports!Follow us on...twitter.com/@murdersmallfacebook.com/smalltownpodinstagram.com/smalltownmurderAlso, check out James & Jimmie's other show, Crime In Sports!
