Resting in God's Grace “The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord.”  These poignant words are among the most renowned utterances of Job, the emblematic figure of faith in the Bible. This was his reaction upon learning of the tragic loss of all his children in a single natural catastrophe.  While few can truly comprehend the extent of Job's sorrow, Daniel Foster and his wife Breeze have faced similar heartache. In this week's episode of the Cedarville Stories Podcast, Daniel recounts his journey of finding solace in God's grace through life's peaks and valleys  God has bestowed numerous blessings upon Daniel. He earned his degree in electrical engineering from Cedarville University in 2001, which led to a fulfilling career as a civilian defense contractor for the United States Army. Through this divine provision, he also met and married Breeze, with whom he has been blessed with six healthy children.  The Lord has also taken away.  Over a span of two years, Daniel and Breeze have navigated a tumultuous path of loss and emotion. In 2017, they mourned the passing of their daughter Willow, who left this world 36 weeks into Breeze's pregnancy, and they faced the heart-wrenching news that Breeze might not be able to conceive again. Just over a year later, their joy returned with the arrival of Ember, whose sweet spirit brought light to their lives, only for tragedy to strike again. A few months after her birth, she was diagnosed with a rare genetic illness that ultimately claimed her life.  Through these trials, Daniel and his family have maintained a steadfast faith in God and His grace which has supported them during their darkest hours. This unwavering belief has even inspired Daniel to pen a book, “Waiting for Peace,” aimed at encouraging others to hold on to the goodness of God's grace.  Tune in to learn more about the Foster family's extraordinary journey of faith, which includes yet another unexpected blessing — the birth of their newest daughter, Xenia Grace, alongside the joy of their first grandchild — as Daniel shares his compelling Cedarville Story. https://share.transistor.fm/s/eea3e2e8https://youtu.be/6EnPI0Kuuao

Playing as a principal player in a string section of an orchestra certainly has its challenges – but how do you learn how to lead a section? There's plenty of tuition on audition preparation and orchestral repertoire for students – but it's unlikely many string players attend a class called ‘Leading 101' while at college! It's certainly a job that comes with gained experience and feedback. Here to share his learning experiences of leading a section is violist Daniel Foster. Daniel joined the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington DC in 1993 and was appointed to principal viola in 1995 – sitting next to his father who was associate principal! As he reaches an important milestone of 30 years with the NSO, he shares his approach and philosophy on leading a string section. We talk to Daniel Foster, Director of Strategy at TechSmith,  about the contentious relationship between technical writers and video content. A growing trend among technical writers is the integration of video content alongside traditional documentation and visuals, offering a dynamic and immersive medium to enhance user understanding and engagement. However, writers generally prefer words because they're easier to reuse and scale, as well as being more efficient for their overall business. This leads to a rather contentious relationship with video elements...especially with clients specifically requesting more of them. Daniel regularly works with technical writers on how to bridge this gap and effectively leverage video content to complement their writing.  We discuss how technical writers can effectively manage this contentious relationship. We will publish a transcript on the Cherryleaf blog.  About Cherryleaf: Cherryleaf   Techsmith's Research hub includes: - Value of Visuals - Ultimate Guide to Simplified User Interface Graphics (SUI) - The Ultimate Guide to Easily Make Instructional Videos Guide to adding captions to videos Simplify Tool in Snagit (tutorial) Audiate

Interviews by Brainard Carey

Art Values & Philosophies By Daniel Foster Art is fundamentally about the pursuit of beauty and/or truth.   Beauty is not always truthful, and truth is not always beautiful.  Very few professions work with such important content and tools for change and the humanistic benefit of the individual, family, groups, organizations, communities, and society. Everyone’s “Wow” is equal and authentic.   We are all visual creatures that become experts about what we love to look at a very early age – and then institutionalized child development and educational processes work to undermine our confidence in our own eyes and natural “response system”, further reinforced in adulthood by the art world elitist establishment and its intellectual and cultural arrogance. Eventually, too many adults don’t know or are too scared to express what they like or don’t like in art. Trend towards collective vs. isolated impact models.  Competition in the capitalistic marketplace may be good; but, it’s ‘poison’ in the charity/nonprofit world.  Funders/philanthropists create grant competitions for funding between similar-missioned nonprofit organizations in the same definable community.  Ultimately, this produces highly siloed, fragmented, and disorganized community efforts that DO NOT address the systemic causal factors --- but, simply place a “band aid” on the year-after-year problem.  Sustainable impact models require collaborative, coordinated, and leveraged approaches utilizing many diverse leaders/organizations with adequate long-term resource support.  After a century of American philanthropy, the nonprofit sector needs a revolutionary change (like every other major industry/institution in America over 100 years old).  The nonprofit “operating system” has grown arcane, wasteful, and ineffective in addressing the needs of its citizens/communities.  Read “Collective Impact” by Stanford Social Innovation Review. Art is Content AND Context.  The realm of content has been explored extensively in the 20th century – particularly in the postmodern era...The new frontier in art is comprehensively exploring the ‘contextualization’ of this content into our daily public and private lives and hour-by-hour “consciousness”.  Many civic-public arts programs are a crude form of “tokenism” …A token nod or gesture to the local arts community.  The difference between a ‘good’ and a ‘bad’ arts community is generally about 2-3 dozen outdoor sculptures/artworks scattered around many square miles of land, walkways, and streets!  Most residents in a ‘good’ art city live without any ‘good’ art in their visual public/outdoor landscape, other than an occasional sculpture or mural observed for a few seconds while in transit. Most offices and workplaces are devoid of ‘good’ or ‘original’ art that reflect the values (and artists) of the local community; and, the same is true for most people’s homes. It’s befuddling that many people who spend $500,000 on a home; and $50,000 on a car; won’t even spend $500 on a good original artwork, instead opting to spend $50 on a generic framed art poster over the sofa.  FYI, the art in your home speaks as loudly about YOU to your family and friends as the car or the home, maybe even more so!   Art is the “artifact” of a creative journey/process designed/executed by the artist.   Most great artists are firmly committed to the “process”, recognizing that good ingredients and good processes produce good outputs and results…usually.  The “artifact” is like an artist’s snapshot of his/her journey at a certain moment in time and place. Art is spiritual technology.   Many artists find their source of inspiration from deep within their soul – a powerful portal to connecting with their deepest spiritual, religious, and philosophical beliefs and sense of purpose.  Thus, artmaking can be a form of spiritual practice which can produce powerful and enlightened moments of personal transformation, identity, and/or spiritual awareness.

Daniel Foster is a proponent of agricultural literacy and is currently an Agricultural Teacher Educator at The Pennsylvania State University. He credits his mother for his love for the industry which all started when his mom decided to move out of Texas to Arizona to further her career in agriculture. He was just 15 going 16 at the time and was a starter on his school’s football team, so he considers this part of his life as a fun transition.   In Arizona, he decided to pursue a degree in agriculture and continue his studies until he eventually got his doctorate at Ohio State. To this day, he recalls never really wanting to teach agriculture. That is until February of his senior year as a student teacher. It was then he realized he wanted to keep doing this, teaching young minds about the importance and future of agriculture, for the rest of his life.   On today’s episode, Daniel talks about how his mom inspired him to pursue agricultural studies, why he decided to become a student teacher, the importance of Ag literacy, and his thoughts on Ag Educators.    “It's a lot more fun helping a kid discover what they have inside through agriculture than it is trying to twist the arm of an elected official to recognize the importance of our industry.”  – Dr. Daniel Foster      This Week on The Future of Agriculture Podcast:  What contributes to the Ag teacher shortage? Do rural areas need better Ag programs? What does Ag literacy success look like? Why should Ag literacy be relevant to everybody? How Ag literacy can cause you to make better lifestyle choices. Why the engine of Ag education is the educator. Core pain points causing attrition in the ranks of Ag teachers. The importance of facilitating and utilizing support programs in Ag education. His goal of funding a female agricultural production operation in every continent.     Check Out Daniel Foster Across the Net:  Official Bio Twitter     We Are a Part of a Bigger Family!  The Future of Agriculture Podcast is now part of the Farm and Rural Ag Network.
