The Berkshire Theatre Group production of "Photograph 51" is an intriguing portrait of British scientist Rosalind Franklin and her often overlooked role in the discovery of DNA's double helix structure.Director David Auburn said of the play, “Postwar England. In a small lab at Cambridge, the brilliant and iconoclastic scientist Rosalind Franklin plays a critical role in the discovery of the structure of DNA. But will her contribution be obscured by history and the scientific establishment? Anna Ziegler's play takes us on a riveting intellectual and emotional adventure, and I'm thrilled to be directing a cast led by BTG favorites Rebecca Brooksher and David Adkins."David Adkins, David Auburn, and Rebecca Brooksher join us.

He once wrote, The man who has nothing to boast of but his ancestors is like a potato - the only good belonging to him is underground.   September 14, 1699  Baptism of Batty Langley, English garden designer, writer, architect, and artist. His elaborate garden designs often featured mazes. If you see one online, you'll find them mesmerizing. A jack of all trades, he offered his wealthy clients a myriad of garden features to choose from, including grottos, baths, fountains, cascades, garden seats, structures, and sundials. Batty sought to soften Baroque gardens featuring formality and geometric shapes with natural landscapes. George Washington was a fan of his work and ordered his New Principles of Gardening (1728) for his library at Mount Vernon. Batty wrote, There is nothing more agreeable in the garden than good shade, and without it a garden is nothing.   September 14, 1931  Birth of Susan Campbell (artistic name: Susan Benson), English illustrator, food writer, and garden historian. She eventually became an expert on the history of walled kitchen gardens after visiting Thomas Pakenham at Tullynally Castle. For over four decades, she researched and wrote about over 700 walled kitchen gardens in the UK and worldwide. In 2001, she established the Walled Kitchen Garden Network with fellow garden historian Fiona Grant. Recently, she studied the garden belonging to Charles Darwin's father, Robert Darwin. In a 1984 interview, Suan commented, Oh, painting was agony. Agony.  And writing is a doddle compared [to] illustrating…  [But kitchen gardens] seemed as secret as anything with their big walls… and I longed to see what they were like.   Unearthed Words Let X equal the quantity of all quantities of X.  Let X equal the cold. It is cold in December. The months of cold equal November through February.  There are four months of cold, and four of heat, leaving four months of indeterminate temperature.  In February, it snows. In March, the lake is a lake of ice. In September, the students come back, and the bookstores are full.  Let X equal the month of full bookstores.  The number of books approaches infinity as the number of months of cold approaches four.  I will never be as cold now as I will in the future.  The future of cold is infinite. The future of heat is the future of cold. The bookstores are infinite and so are never full except in September...” ― David Auburn, Proof   Grow That Garden Library The Winter Harvest Handbook by Eliot Coleman This book came out in 2009, and the subtitle is Year-Round Vegetable Production Using Deep-Organic Techniques and Unheated Greenhouses. In this book, Renaissance man Eliot Coleman shares his ingenuity and time-tested experience with growing and harvesting food year-round. If you're considering extending your growing season, Eliot's book is regarded as the bible of successful winter sowing, growing, and harvesting.  With The Winter Harvest Handbook, gardeners can remain active and productive even in the coldest winters using unheated or minimally heated, movable plastic greenhouses. Eliot shares how to make and maintain your greenhouse, along with growing and marketing tips for over 30 different crops. This book is 264 pages of a proven model for enjoying fresh, locally-grown produce all through the winter. You can get a copy of The Winter Harvest Handbook by Eliot Coleman and support the show using the Amazon Link in today's Show Notes for around $15.   Today's Botanic Spark Reviving the little botanic spark in your heart September 14, 1938 On this day, the Canadian naturalist Charles Joseph Sauriol wrote in his diary, I stood out on the lawn at 12.30 A.M. The Valley silvered in moonlight could have been back in July…  Moving is transplanting, and transplanting causes most plants to droop momentarily. So, we come to the end of another calendar year, wow, thank you for all the support and listening to us each week as we look at topics we feel deserve more attention. Now this episode we are doing a year in review and discuss what some of our favourites were, what we felt were some of the highlights and what was just downright funny. So strap in as we look back on a year full of robots, space travel, recycling, and the energetic joy of Katie Bouman, and that is just the start. We also go for a ride looking at the movies and tv series that have made us laugh, cry, scream, and sit in awe throughout the year. We discuss the controversy of crazy violence and insanity in movies such as Rambo – Last Blood. Yep some one has claimed it is… Nope you will need to listen in to know what is happening. Also we look at the year in games and take stock of what has happened. We laugh at some of it, get annoyed at some, and shake our heads in bewilderment at others. Content warning: this play deals with themes of domestic violence.   "You can’t really influence them. You can maybe adjust the trajectory a little bit, you can try to guide, but after a certain point? No."   Emmy winner Bobby Cannavale ("Will & Grace," Broadway's The Lifespan of a Fact, PoA's Gun Show) and Tony nominee Peter Gallagher ("Grace and Frankie," "The O.C.") star in a live recording of TWO DADS by Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winner David Auburn (Proof, PoA's An Upset), When two fathers meet at a resort and start swapping stories from the front lines of parenting, their poolside banter takes an unexpected, heartbreaking turn. In turns bitingly funny & disquieting, TWO DADS is directed by Claudia Weill (Girlfriends, PoA's Hate Baby). After the play, the artists join host Claudia Catania for an onstage conversation.    TWO DADS was recorded live at BRIC House in Brooklyn, New York.

Content advisory: this episode contains explicit language and sexual references. When a cocky, jaded tennis star (David Harbour) loses a pivotal match to an inexperienced Romanian player (Steven Boyer), the two men lock into an unlikely battle for dominance on and off the court. Over the course of three encounters on the Grand Slam circuit, AN UPSET by David Auburn (Tony & Pulitzer winner for Proof) peers irreverently, and explosively, behind the locker room door. After the play, Tony nominees Harbour ("Stranger Things," Hellboy, Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?) and Boyer (Hand to God, "Trial & Error") join director Michael Wilson (PoA's Wildwood Park, Broadway's The Trip To Bountiful) and host Claudia Catania for an exclusive talk-back about working with your idols and what it means to be an amateur. AN UPSET was recorded live at the 52nd Street Project in New York City.

The Producer's Perspective Podcast with Ken Davenport

David Auburn is a playwright, screenwriter, and theatre director. He is best known for his 2000 play Proof, which won the 2001 Tony Award for Best Play and Pulitzer Prize for Drama, and was later adapted into a film in 2005. Other films he has worked on include The Lake House, and his directorial debut with The Girl in the Park. He wrote several short plays, collectively grouped as Fifth Planet and Other Plays. His first full-length play, Skyscraper, ran Off Broadway in 1997. He has worked on other plays such as The Columnist, Lost Lake, Sick, and Side Effects. He has been awarded the Helen Merrill Playwriting Award and a Guggenheim Fellowship. David and I chatted about the origins of Proof and how he solved it as well as . . . How he “warmed up” to writing plays by writing sketches and one-acts first (and a business reason why this is a great place for emerging playwrights to start) The most important reason why he thinks Proof was so successful and why it’s done everywhere. Why he enjoys directing other people’s work, but doesn’t want to do his own. The difference between writing screenplays and stage plays. Where he gets his ideas . . . and what he does first when he gets one. The Producer's Perspective Podcast with Ken Davenport

Daryl Roth is an American ten time Tony Award-winning producer who has produced over 90 productions on and off Broadway. She is the only producer of seven Pulitzer Prize-winning plays: Bruce Norris’ Clybourne Park (Tony Award); Tracy Letts’ August: Osage County (Tony Award); Nilo Cruz’s Anna in the Tropics; David Auburn’s Proof (Tony Award); Margaret Edson’s Wit; Paula Vogel’s How I Learned to Drive; and Edward Albee’s Three Tall Women. Other Broadway shows she has produced include Nick & Nora (1991), Desire Under the Elms (2009), A Little Night Music (2009), Driving Miss Daisy (2010), Annie (revival, 2012), Kinky Boots (2013, Tony Award), This Is Our Youth (2014), and An Act of God (2015). Off-Broadway productions include Tea at Five (2003), Esoterica (2006), The Judy Show (2011), and The Velveteen Rabbit (2012). Daryl took a break from being one of the most prolific Producers around and chatted with me about her perspective on Broadway, Off Broadway and much more, including . . . How listening to a voice inside her that she never heard before got her to produce her very first show.  And how you should listen to the same one. Why aren’t there more women lead Producers?  Is there still an old Broadway boys’ club? And what can we do about it? How Kinky Boots was born. What she looks for when picking a producing partner (listen to this podcast to hear from one of those partners himself). Why after all this Broadway success, she still remains committed to Off Broadway.   Keep up with me: @KenDavenportBway www.theproducersperspective.com Learn more about your ad choices.
