Jean Hartnett, MHSA, NHA, CDP, YTT, C.N.A., talks about her move from CEO of the largest nursing home in Nebraska to founding Radical Sabbatical, supporting individuals and senior living communities on their paths to healing. About Jean Jean Hartnett is a visionary health care leader with more than 30 years of executive experience serving the older adult population. She holds a master's in health services administration, is a Certified Dementia Practitioner, a Certified Yoga Instructor, and a Certified Nursing Assistant. Ms. Hartnett is an expert in trauma-informed care and adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and founded Radical Sabbatical to help others turn past adversity into self-advocacy. With a deep understanding of the profound effects trauma can have on development and well-being, Jean brings a compassionate, evidence-based approach to support individuals and communities on their healing journey. Key Takeaways Trauma informed is an approach that can be applied to resident's and staff in senior living. Practitioners must view the individual through the lens of why they act a certain way, not simply their behaviors. All behavior has meaning. Adverse childhood experiences impact an individual's entire life, including their older adult years. Moving into senior living can lead to trauma resurfacing because the coping mechanisms that have provided emotional support throughout an older adult's life may be cut off. Medicare-eligible older adults spend fifty calendar days in clinical environments that are not hospitals. That includes physician, physical therapy and occupational therapy, and other specialists.

Noah Brandon, CEO of Unitech Training Academy, joins Discover Lafayette to discuss his mission to make education accessible to all. Noah graduated from the College of Business at UL-Lafayette and then went on to earn his MBA from Brown University and the Instituto de Empresa in Madrid Spain. Unitech Training Academy is a growing education institution that was originally founded by Noah's mother, Deanna Head, in 1997, initially offering a Certified Nursing Assistant program. Today, the institution has six campuses across the state, online classes, and two early learning centers in Lafayette and Alexandria. Noah is an advocate for all post-secondary educational offerings and is active with One Acadiana's Workforce Development Strategy to ensure that local employers can find skilled workers that fit market needs. Unitech staff partner with their students at Unitech to ensure that the soft skills needed to stay employed are learned while training for their new career. "There is a universal truth among all hiring managers: they want to hire people who make their lives easier, not harder. So when you're interviewing for a job, your goal is not to tell them how great you are. Your job is to convince them that you are the answer to their problems and you'll make their job easier." The majority of students at Unitech are studying allied health field courses. Classes offered include Dental Assisting, EKG/Phlebotomy technician, Medical Assistant, Pharmacy Technician, medical billing and coding, as well as Massage Therapy, IT Technician, IT Support Specialist, and Early Childhood Ancillary Certificate. At any given time there are approximately 1100 students enrolled in what Noah calls a "rolling program of enrollment" that allows students to start classes each Monday. Noah's mom, Deanna, created this model to allow students to start a new career and obtain an education as soon as possible. Unitech held its first graduation for the Unitech Leadership and Development Institute in October 2023. Noah is active in the community and serves as President of the Board of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Acadiana. He was honored in 2022 as an Acadiana Top 20 under 40 Award Recipient. Noah Brandon spoke of his understanding of the importance of intentionality when dealing with others. Most of us carry around fears and insecurities, and it can show in our actions if people don't know us. Especially as you move up the career ladder. Our insecurities can shape how people size us up. We may be shy but it can come off as aloofness. People may think, "You're the guy in charge....you're not supposed to be insecure!' He believes that if you look at people with love instead of fear, it really changes the whole dynamic. "If I look at others and give them the benefit of the doubt.....it becomes so much easier to interact with people." Does any area of an LNC's work present greater challenges than marketing your business? How great a difference would it make to your well-being and confidence if you could learn how successful LNCs do it? Jacquelyn Maki, a Wisconsin resident, who worked her way from being a CNA to getting a master's degree in health care administration, knows the value of persistence, are her marketing practices reflect this value. At the beginning of her LNC career, she targeted prospect not only on the basis of logical preferences but on a kind of intuition that told her she and a particular attorney would make a good match. In researching local lawyers, she sometimes went to court and analyzed their performances and the approached them for a conversation. She reports this as highly successful technique. As she expanded her efforts, she initiated the goal of having lawyers in every state in the U.S. She pursues this goal today; as she says, you never stop marketing. She advocates the importance of trial lawyers' conferences as a great way to meet attorneys. Many LNCs hesitate about how frequently to approach an attorney. Jacque shares with you her step-by-step approach which she has designed by knowing what she doesn't like when people are marketing to her. Get the Case into the Door - Jacque Maki How can you find your niche as a legal nurse consultant? How can watching an attorney working in court help to get them as a client? As Spark Performance League Commissioner, Angie McAllister designs events that build strength, purpose, and belonging—with a healthy dose of competition thrown in. Learn about Lifespark's TRYathlon™ Tournament and National Forklift Racing League, plus musings on next generation senior living and aging in place. About Angie Angie McAllister NHA has nearly three decades of experience in senior living, proudly having started her career as a Certified Nursing Assistant. She is currently the Spark Performance League Commissioner at Lifespark, where she is working closely with communities to build out an athletic league in senior living that supports the organization's mission of empowering seniors to live fuller, more independent lives. Angie was recently voted The Eden Alternative International's Board Chair. She was the 2016 recipient of the Nancy J. Fox Leadership Award and the 2018 recipient of the Eden Alternative Champion Award. Her experience spans transformational growth, change management and person-centered programming that sparks creativity and engagement. Previously to joining Lifespark she led Quality of Life and Culture Change Initiatives for Signature Healthcare, working closely with communities to facilitate transformation practices and eventually assisting many to join The Eden Alternative. Key Takeaways Lifespark commissions athletic leagues with teams, competitions, and prizes. The National Forklift Racing League is a contest using remote control forklifts—residents work as a team to stack the most poundage onto a set of scales within a time limit. There was backward motion towards an institutional approach during the pandemic, even in senior living communities with best practices. Along the lines of the Eden Alternative, personal transformation has to take place and the “blinders need to come off,” to transform the aging services industry. Relational trust is necessary to make to make big changes and spur innovation. Trends in senior living include a movement to smaller communities and intentional multi-generational concepts, and away from service-oriented hospitality towards engagement and citizenship. Activity professionals are the heart of senior living communities and underacknowledged for the work they do to improve residents' quality of life.

The W.D. & Mary Baker Smith Career Center, an extension of the high schools in the Lafayette Parish School System, offers students career and technical education in automotive, cosmetology, culinary, medical, industrial technology, and welding programs. Principal Holly Boffy joined Discover Lafayette to share the school's mission and new programming being offered in the upcoming 2022-23 school year. Students must be enrolled in the Lafayette Parish School System to participate and they attend the Career Center for three hours per day taking technical and career classes. No one graduates from the Career Center, they only attend part of their school day and graduate from their home base school. There is no tuition for the programs, but some minor fees may be involved depending upon the curriculum. Public school buses transport the students to and from their home base school. Program fields include Auto tech, Auto paint and body, Remote Vehicle Tech, Cosmetology, Culinary, Digital Media, Manufacturing Tech (Computer-aided design and Metal Cutting) Medical (nursing and medical assistant, EMT), Robotics and Welding. The Career Center is implementing an HVAC program in the Fall of 2022 along with electrical programs. There is still space for students in the new programs, as well as in machinery and the paint and body program; families are encouraged to visit https://www.lpssonline.com/schools/careercenter for more information. In a typical year, the application process opens up in January. The training received while in high school enables students to enter the workforce full-time upon graduation or continue on to community college, a four-year university, or apprenticeship programs. The Career Center partners with South Louisiana Community College and students can earn dual enrollment credits with the tuition being covered by LPSS. These early career experiences are invaluable as students learn whether or not their career choice is the correct fit for their interests while they are still young. "It empowers the students," says Principal Boffy. She cited one example of a teacher who had originally earned credentials as a Certified Nursing Assistant. While that career path turned out not to be for her, she was able to work as a CNA while putting herself through a traditional four-year college, using her trade and not incurring debt. "It's important to mentor your children, to have conversations about what makes them happy. What gifts do they have that they can use to contribute to others in their career? I believe the Career Center is one of the best-kept secrets in Lafayette Parish," says Principal Holly Boffy. Students have to have decent grades to enroll in the Career Center as they must also earn their other core credits such as History, English, etc. to graduate. The Career Center is committed to the region's 55 by 25 Initiative, with a goal of increasing the proportion of working-age adults in Acadiana with postsecondary degrees, certificates, or other high-value credentials to 55 percent by 2025. One program that reaches out to serve the community is the Culinary program which utilizes the Culinary Cafe on-site at the Career Center. With adequate space to hold luncheons or banquets, the space is open for rentals to the public. You provide your budget to the students who will then prepare a meal from scratch and serve your guests at the tables provided. Shown are students at the Culinary Cafe at W. D. and Mary Baker Smith Career Center. To be certified, students must complete 400 hours working the industry and pass 3 different tests to earn the Pro-Start National Certificate of Achievement, an industry-recognized certificate that signifies a strong foundation in the basic management and culinary skills considered critical to success by restaurant industry leaders. We thank Principal Holly Boffy for her commitment to seeing all students receive the highest and best form of education su...
Pam Speta is a certified Positive Approach® to Care Trainer and is also a Certified Nursing Assistant. She cared for her husband, Rich, who had dementia, at home. She learned first-hand the remarkable and profound effect that PAC education had on handling the behavior changes she saw in her husband. Forget Me Not Village was born out of the idea of changing the way we treat Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, dementia, and brain injury patients. When Rich, Pam's husband was diagnosed with MCI at 60, neither of them knew what an impact that would have on their future lives. As a result of this journey, Forget Me Not Family Care Home was born, then came the Village. The concept is simple. Create an environment where families dealing with the disease can help each other in a safe and secure facility. Add an adult daycare in the form of a dementia village and you have created something that has never been done before. An extraordinary episode with Mary Anne and Pam - for ALL caregivers. www.theverandaministries.org www.forgetmenotvillage.org

In this episode, angels, spiritual awakening, intuitive ability and recognition, we're going to have a conversation with a woman who changed her life by leaving a toxic relationship, opening her mind in her heart to the angels on her shoulder, and how you can recognize yours. My guest in this episode is Jesse Campbell, but her clients know her as Jess Intuitive Angel Healer. She is a Spiritual Grounding Coach and Reiki Practitioner & over all Energy Healer. She provides supportive guidance to individuals by connecting to their Angels and energy in an Angel Session through oracle divination. As an empath, she creates a safe, loving space for her clients. While experiencing a healing Angelic session, clients will notice the heavy energy being transmuted by my energy and replaced with healing Love & Light. She has been a part of the medical community since 2008 in various states. She was a Certified Nursing Assistant, Behavioral Tech for mental health &Caregiver for 4 years. Her Associates Degree is in Applied Sciences, with a Major in Medical Assisting. This was accomplished in 2012 at NAU in Overland Park, KS. For over 7 years now, she has worked for various specialty physician's offices as a Medical Assistant. This also includes the opportunities she received to work with Infectious Disease in Kansas City, MO to start her career off & with the Air Force Academy as a med tech in their family health clinic. She has been studying the spiritual side of life now since her “spiritual awakening” in 2017. Her story might be similar to a few out there, she was in a Toxic 10-year marriage and had to relearn how to LIVE again after deciding that she would not let this be the END of her story. She is a Spiritual Practitioner, and my Only Religion is LOVE and ALL paths that Lead to it! My guidance is meant to be delivered as lovingly as possible, but it will never hold anything within it, but the Absolute truth you need to move forward. Angelic Services are Non-Religious & Purely full of Only Love & Light needed to demolish the emotional blocks you are currently experiencing. Teaching & Guidance are delivered non-bias manner that is direct from the source. Angelic Guidance & Spiritual teachings are provided in a loving, but direct manner. Extra care will be taken with more difficult messages and explained in detail, so you understand your guidance. Nikki chats with Melissa about her passion and coaching support program. She is a former Certified Nursing Assistant turned full-time stay-at-home mom and spousal caregiver. In today's episode, Melissa discussed her journey in starting her wisdom business. She started with some freebies and a 1:1 Coaching Program after four niche downs after working with her business Coach and getting clear on how and what she wanted to share. Her advice for those who want to start their own wisdom business: “Get support from day one as it's what has kept me going and not giving up. Also, figure out what makes you tick in terms of how you like to work and organized your biz and also more importantly figure out from the beginning who you want to serve and why? If you can't answer those two questions you are gonna be on the struggle bus! “ The offer: My Whole Body Self Care Bundle officially launched last March 25th. This includes a new workshop taught in my new pop-up group and journal plus if they attend live? One-time discount to my 1:1 Voxer Support Coaching Program which opened last March 28th. https://melissamiller2011.podia.com/whole-body-self-care-bundle/ April 28th my Finding Your Balance Course opens doors again. This quick tip came from a Nurse and C.N.A. (Certified Nursing Assistant) who care for elderly adults and are constantly watching how families are interacting with their loved one. Moving too fast is a big contributor to miscommunication as well as potential injury.
On this weeks episode, Emmalee and Cole Talk to Megan Owens, and Tiffany Parrish. Megan is a Nurse Case Manager, and Tiffany is a Certified Nursing Assistant with Hospice of Davidson County. They have a great discussion surrounding safety issues in the home for the elderly or fragile. Megan and Tiffany also give some great tips to help your loved one navigate these challenges.
Max and I took 90 minutes away from eating in New Orleans to talk about restaurants, politics, the horrors of working as a Certified Nursing Assistant, riding motorcycles in Vietnam, John McCain, and the tragic closing of Jeri's Grill in Chicago. Go to a diner!
