Noah Brandon, CEO of Unitech Training Academy, joins Discover Lafayette to discuss his mission to make education accessible to all. Noah graduated from the College of Business at UL-Lafayette and then went on to earn his MBA from Brown University and the Instituto de Empresa in Madrid Spain. Unitech Training Academy is a growing education institution that was originally founded by Noah's mother, Deanna Head, in 1997, initially offering a Certified Nursing Assistant program. Today, the institution has six campuses across the state, online classes, and two early learning centers in Lafayette and Alexandria. Noah is an advocate for all post-secondary educational offerings and is active with One Acadiana's Workforce Development Strategy to ensure that local employers can find skilled workers that fit market needs. Unitech staff partner with their students at Unitech to ensure that the soft skills needed to stay employed are learned while training for their new career. "There is a universal truth among all hiring managers: they want to hire people who make their lives easier, not harder. So when you're interviewing for a job, your goal is not to tell them how great you are. Your job is to convince them that you are the answer to their problems and you'll make their job easier." The majority of students at Unitech are studying allied health field courses. Classes offered include Dental Assisting, EKG/Phlebotomy technician, Medical Assistant, Pharmacy Technician, medical billing and coding, as well as Massage Therapy, IT Technician, IT Support Specialist, and Early Childhood Ancillary Certificate. At any given time there are approximately 1100 students enrolled in what Noah calls a "rolling program of enrollment" that allows students to start classes each Monday. Noah's mom, Deanna, created this model to allow students to start a new career and obtain an education as soon as possible. Unitech held its first graduation for the Unitech Leadership and Development Institute in October 2023. Noah is active in the community and serves as President of the Board of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Acadiana. He was honored in 2022 as an Acadiana Top 20 under 40 Award Recipient. Noah Brandon spoke of his understanding of the importance of intentionality when dealing with others. Most of us carry around fears and insecurities, and it can show in our actions if people don't know us. Especially as you move up the career ladder. Our insecurities can shape how people size us up. We may be shy but it can come off as aloofness. People may think, "You're the guy in charge....you're not supposed to be insecure!' He believes that if you look at people with love instead of fear, it really changes the whole dynamic. "If I look at others and give them the benefit of the doubt.....it becomes so much easier to interact with people." The increasing integration of oral healthcare with medical care could lead to a reconsideration of roles and responsibilities on care teams in both fields. That's just one of the emerging trends in oral healthcare we explore on this episode of Raise the Line with guests Laura Skarnulis, CEO of the Dental Assisting National Board and the DALE Foundation, and Ann Battrell, CEO of the American Dental Hygienists Association. Both agree this trend, among others, is making oral healthcare an increasingly dynamic field of employment. “There are so many opportunities, pathways, jobs, and environments in which to work,” says Skarnulis. “People can make all different kinds of choices today that never had been there before,” Battrell adds. There is also an ongoing need for both dental assistants and dental hygienists, with the supply in both roles declining during the pandemic due to retirements and other factors. In their informative conversation with host Shiv Gaglani, these industry experts also dive into issues surrounding scope of practice, the benefits of having diversified experiences throughout one's career and why it's important to “get comfortable with being uncomfortable” to maximize professional and personal growth.

Welcome back, Peeps! Today, the multi-talented and widely accomplished Emily Boge MPA, RDH, CDA joins us to tell us about her career from the beginning. Emily’s story begins on a hog farm in rural Iowa where she and her 10 siblings grew up. We follow her through her early education, where she played the sousaphone (Katrina psychically intuits this) and invented a motion-activated flycatcher called the “Fly-Vacuum”, which won her a full ride to the University of Iowa. Today, Emily Boge designs dental instruments, is a Dental Administrative Chair and is an active speaker and writer in the dental community. Her innovative spirit is apparent in her work and her drive to push skills to new limits. It is such a joy to have this lifelong academic on our show to talk about the state of dental hygienist programs and what dental school is really all about. We cover some of these topics and much more: How hard should dental courses be? What does it take to be a great dental educator? Is it worth going to dental school during the Covid-19 pandemic? How do you find time to write while working overtime? How has the pandemic affected dental programs? Emily Boge in her own words: Emily Boge, MPA, RDH, CDA is the Dental Administrative Chair at Hawkeye Community College in Waterloo, Iowa. In this role, she serves the Dental Assisting and Dental Hygiene Program students, the faculty of the programs, and the staff of the Dental Clinic. Prior to accepting this position in July of 2015, she practiced as a full-time dental hygienist at Dental Associates of Manchester in Manchester, Iowa. In addition to working at the College, she maintains an active career completing research, product development, and evaluation of products for several major dental companies. She also enjoys speaking and writing research for professionals and facts for consumers in dentistry. She enjoys all facets of dental hygiene and dentistry and prides herself on thinking outside the box when it comes to dental innovation and practice standards; especially when she can apply new ideas to clinical techniques that improve the current standard of care. Emily designed and marketed the Boge513™ scaler, sold by American Eagle Instruments. This instrument won the 2017 Dental Excellence Award: Best New Instrument/Device. Emily also designed the Centennial Scaler, manufactured by Hu-Friedy Instruments. Emily graduated from Hawkeye Community College Dental Assisting (2000) and Dental Hygiene (2003) Programs prior to completing her Bachelor’s in Psychology with a focus in Gerontology (2012) and a Master’s in Public Administration (2015) at Upper Iowa University, and values lifelong education. She is a current doctoral student at Franklin University in Columbus, OH studying to receive her EdD in Higher EducationOrganizational Leadership. As a native rural Iowan, Emily is married to a fifth-generation family farmer and machinist, and they live on their crop farm with their two sons. Emily enjoys cooking and baking, target shooting, four wheeling, reading, and shopping. Did you know that the five love languages can help improve your relationships with your team and your patients? Dr. Trent Redfearn is a dentist with a unique skill set. He attended University of Missouri-Columbia and graduated with a B.S. in chemical engineering. He then attended University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Dentistry, receiving his Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) in 2008. Since then, he has done extensive training in communication and teaches dental teams how to strengthen and improve their relationships using the five love languages. Dr. Trent Redfearn is also the Founder of Dentovation Academy of Dental Assisting. The five love languages include words of affirmation, acts of service, receiving gifts, quality time, and physical touch. Not everyone responds to these five love languages in the same way. Some people value gifts while others prefer to build relationships by spending quality time with someone they want to connect with. By understanding each of the five love languages further, you can use that knowledge to build both your personal and professional relationships – including the connections you build with patients in your dental practice. In this episode, we discuss: Why it's important to show appreciation to your team and vice versa How to improve your team's communication skills with each other and patients Understanding how the five love languages work when it comes to improving relationships Why you should figure out what love language each team member responds to the most How to resolve conflict using your knowledge on the five love languages How to identify your blind spots and respond to people with a different love language than your own If you would like to connect with Dr. Trent Redfearn and learn more about using the five love languages to help build deeper connections with team members and patients, you can reach out to him via his LinkedIn profile. Dr. Mark Costes is far from a typical dentist and dental coach. During his career, he has been able to start or acquire over a dozen successful dental practices during some of the profession's most challenging times. But Dr. Costes's journey was not without its setbacks. In fact, he credits much of his success to the fact that he made more mistakes in his first year of private practice ownership than most dentists make in an entire career. What separated him from the masses, however, was the fact that he viewed each failure and roadblock as a learning experience and an opportunity to improve his business and life. This philosophy, as well as his decision to model the world's most successful marketers and dentists, has led him to where he is today. Dr. Costes is founder of the Dental Success Institute, a company committed to helping dentists to achieve their full potential, while recapturing their passion for dentistry. He is also the founder of the Horizon Schools of Dental Assisting which has experienced explosive growth and has expanded to over one hundred and eighty locations throughout the United States.
