Welcome to episode 72 of the EdTech Situation Room from November 1, 2017, where technology news meets educational analysis. This week Jason Neiffer (@techsavvyteach) and Wes Fryer (@wfryer) discussed the unfortunate limitations of USB-C cables, the slowing of Moore's law and the growing importance of AI for smartphone sales and function, and iPhone X pre-order sales numbers. Additional topics included survey results about Americans' opinions of Google, Facebook, Amazon and Microsoft, the U.S Congressional hearings with representatives of Facebook, Twitter and Google, the need to address online anonymity in light of U.S. Presidential election revelations, and the ways social media is used today to divide our nation rather than unify us. Samsung's opening of its codebase for the Galaxy S5 has led to some remarkable DIY hacking projects, and Facebook may start requiring publisher to pay to make articles visible in user news feeds. All these topics and more were discussed in this week's episodes. Jason's geek of the week was a collection of Google related IFTTT recipes and a helpful beginner's guide to IFTTT. Wes' geek of the week was Screen Cloud, a Google services connected digital signage platform which is extremely robust and awesome. 完整文稿请关注周日微信,或登录以下网址: http://english.cri.cn/7146/2014/09/29/2582s845913.htm This is NEWS Plus Special English. I'm Yun Feng in Beijing. Here is the news. A new study in the United States has found that Apple's new and bigger iPhone 6 and iPhone 6-Plus are more durable than last year's model and a leading Android phone. Extended warranty firm Square Trade has found that Apple's iPhone 6 did the best across a variety of tests that measures how prone smartphones are to break due to everyday accidents. The iPhone 6 Plus wasn't far behind but lost points because it could slip out of a person's hand since some users may have a hard time gripping its large but slim form. The iPhone 5s, which came out last year, fared better than Samsung's Galaxy S5. The Samsung phone got poor marks on several tests including the slide test. The more a phone slides, the greater its chance of falling off the edge of a table. Still, all four of the smartphones tested had a medium risk of breakage and had no drastic differences among them. Square Trade, the largest electronics safety provider in the U.S., examines the phones based on eight factors, including size, weight, grip and the quality of the front and back panels. The company measured how far the phones slide when pushed across a table on their backs, how well they withstand drops from 4 feet - or almost 122 centimeters high, and being dunked in water for 10 seconds. This is NEWS Plus Special English. The United Nations says Africa's international tourist arrivals grew by 3 percent during the first half of this year, but it warned that the Ebola outbreak may affect the sector in the second half of the year. The U.N. World Tourism Organization says the growth was a result of the recovery consolidated in North Africa. It indicated that the current Ebola outbreak in West Africa might affect tourism on the continent, due to misinterpretations about the transmission of the virus. The organization said the main focus at the moment is on taking supporting action to contain the virus. But it must also ensure that misperceptions do not harm the African economy, in particular its tourism sector. It says the World Health Organization does not recommend any ban on international travel, and putting a halt on flights or imposing unnecessary travel restrictions will not help contain the virus. On the contrary, these measures will surely dampen the economy of the region. This is NEWS Plus Special English. U.S. Space Agency NASA's first spacecraft dedicated to exploring the upper atmosphere of Mars has entered its Mars orbit, completing a 10-month journey of 711 million kilometers. The aircraft, commonly known as MAVEN, began to enter the Martian orbit on September 21st. Over the next few weeks, MAVEN will begin maneuvering into its final orbit, and testing its instruments and science-mapping commands. Thereafter, MAVEN will begin its one-Earth-year primary mission to measure the composition, structure and escape of gases in Mars' upper atmosphere and its interaction with the sun and solar wind. As the first orbiter dedicated to studying Mars' upper atmosphere, MAVEN will greatly improve people's understanding of the history of the Martian atmosphere, how the climate has changed over time, and the potential habitability on the planet. The study will help to make it possible for a future mission to send humans to the Red Planet in the 2030s. You are listening to NEWS Plus Special English. I'm Yun Feng in Beijing. A new survey has found that the European people's concern about the environment has not diminished, and air pollution becomes the biggest issue among environment worries. The European Union survey covered 28,000 EU citizens. Most of the interviewees said that protecting the environment is important to them personally, and many think that more can be done. Environment officials of the EU say it's good to see such solid and widespread support for environment protection, even in difficult times. The survey shows that besides air and water pollution, people are particularly concerned about chemicals and waste, and they feel that more must be done by everyone to protect the environment. Meanwhile, more than half of the interviewees believed that social and environmental factors should be as important as economic criteria in measuring progress in a country. They are calling for the public authorities to favor environment-friendly considerations over cost, in relation to spending and investment of the government.

完整文稿请关注周末微信或登录以下网址: http://english.cri.cn/7146/2014/06/20/2582s832626.htm This is NEWS Plus Special English. I'm Yun Feng in Beijing. Here is the news. Television and online rights for sporting events are typically sold by territory. For the World Cup, that means viewers in the United States are limited to what's available through U.S. television networks ABC, ESPN and Univision. Outside the U.S., games are available on a variety of over-the-air and cable channels, with streaming available for free or for a fee. Legal viewing is restricted to people in those countries. Services are typically able to block outsiders based on the computer's numeric Internet Protocol address. Here's a look at what viewers in some countries are getting. England - All games are available over the air for free in England because the World Cup has been designated a "crown jewel of sport", part of a regulation that prohibits certain events from being restricted to pay-tv. Italy - All 64 matches are available on Italy's Sky satellite service. State broadcaster RAI is showing 25 games, including all of Italy's matches plus other big games, on its free digital cable service. Japan - All games are available in Japan for free on national broadcaster NHK as well as other channels. Mexico - All national team games and one or two live games a day in Mexico are carried over the air by major TV services. Complete coverage of the games is carried only on the Sky satellite service. Nigeria - Selected games are available on Nigerian national broadcaster NTA and local private stations. Many viewers turn to DStv, a South African satellite TV network, for complete coverage. The DStv offices in Lagos have been staying open seven days a week as Nigerians flock to sign up. But regular electricity outages mean people will need to have private generators or battery-powered radios on standby. Russia - All games are broadcast live with Russian commentary on the main state television channel, though this means that many of the games are shown in the middle of the night Moscow time. The games are then re-broadcast during the day. South Africa - The national South African Broadcasting Corporation covers all 64 games live over three channels, meaning it's available to everyone with a 23-dollar annual TV license. Nineteen radio stations of the corporation will offer commentary covering all of South Africa's 11 official languages. Spain - Games involving the Spanish national team are free. All of the other games are available on a premium cable channel or online for 57 dollars. Thailand - In an effort to "return happiness to the people", Thailand negotiated a deal with the tournament's broadcaster, RS International Broadcasting, to allow all the games to be shown for free on an RS channel and two military-run channels. RS had planned to show just 22 of the 64 matches for free. Thailand's national team is not playing in the tournament. You're listening to NEWS Plus Special English. I'm Yun Feng in Beijing. Mention Huawei in the United States, and you're likely to get a blank look. Either that person has never heard of the Chinese phone maker, or has heard something about security concerns raised by lawmakers in Washington. However, Huawei Technologies believes it can overcome all that as it makes a bigger push in the U.S. and tries to build on its successes elsewhere. While Apple and Samsung dominate the worldwide smartphone market with a combined market share of 46 percent, Huawei has a slight lead among the rest, with about 5 percent. The Ascend Mate2 4G is a mid-range Android phone touted as an affordable alternative to such high-end phones as Apple's iPhone 5s and Samsung's Galaxy S5, both of which retail for about 650 US dollars without a contract. The Mate2 will go for 299 dollars and will be sold directly by Huawei. It will work on AT&T's and T-Mobile's networks. You won't get all the features found in the iPhone or the S5, but the Mate2 does well on the basics, based on about a week of testing. Furthermore, it works with 4G cellular networks, while many cheaper devices are compatible only with the slower 3G networks. This is NEWS Plus Special English. The European Union and South Korea have agreed to jointly develop 5G mobile technologies. 5G-technology is set to be 1,000 times faster than the 4G services currently available, and is in its early stages of development. Both the EU and South Korea are investing heavily in 5G. The EU is investing 700 million euros, or 950 million U.S. dollars, over the next seven years into its 5G program. South Korea is investing and coordinating research in its efforts through 5G-Forum and there are other major public and industry-led initiatives in China, Japan and the United States. You are listening to NEWS Plus Special English. I'm Yun Feng in Beijing. The African Union has marked the "Day of African Child" at the AU Headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia's capital. The Day of African Child falls on June 16th each year; and it presents an opportunity for all stake-holders on children's rights, including government, non-governmental and international entities, to reflect on issues affecting children. This year's theme is "a child friendly, quality, free and compulsory education for all children in Africa". It aims to ensure that all the goals have been met in accordance with the African charter on the rights and welfare of children. The AU celebrates the Day of African Child every year, in commemoration of the 1976 protests by school children in South Africa. The students protested against an education program designed to further the purposes of the apartheid regime.

New York City is a fine place to sneak a peek at some unreleased devices, and that's just what we did this week with the LG G3 event (streamed from London to an airy presentation room in a Chelsea skyscraper) and AT&T's ASUS PadFone X announcement (held on a posh rooftop lounge near the Flatiron). At one of those events, Daniel Bader of MobileSyrup was our seat neighbor, so we thought we'd invite him on this week's podcast to discuss the more globally significant of these high-profile launches. Join us as we share our impressions of the LG G3: how it stands on its own and how well it will or won't be able to compete against other smartphones on the market. Then stick around to hear how our minds are blown, not just by the ASUS PadFone X's dual citizenship as a smartphone and a tablet, but by its insanely low price tag. Stay till the end and you'll hear our thoughts on the surprise of the week: AT&T's new Galaxy S5 Active. All that, plus a sneak peek at some forthcoming changes to the podcast and a healthy helping of outtakes, await you on episode 098 of the Pocketnow Weekly.
What exactly qualifies as a "remix?" How deluded do you have to be to believe in all these "Prime" rumors? Why are we so transfixed by the notion of lasers on smartphones, and so easily taken in by a smartphone commercial, if it's shot like a trailer for Inception? We tackle these questions, and the biggest announcement section in the history of the podcast, in episode 096 of the Pocketnow Weekly. No, that's not bragging – it's just an unavoidable symptom of a month packed with unboxings, hands-ons, product launches, and reviews (both forthcoming and already-published). But even in the midst of all this news, we also make time for listener mail. Because that's how much we care. Enough nonsense. Go listen, and then have a weekend you can be proud of come Monday. Anand & Brian kick things off with a discussion recapping our recent expose on Imagination's PowerVR Rogue architecture, before segueing with a discussion of SoC core counts and core wars on both the CPU and GPU side. Anand and Brian then get into the ARM Coretex-A53 and its adoption in high core count designs, Qualcomm's Snapdragon 600 series, and then what Intel is up to at MWC, including their Merrifield SoC announcements. Anand and Brian then wrap things up with a discussion of Samsung's just-announced flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S5, and their brief impressions on various aspects of it, including the sensors, UI, and the use of both Qualcomm and in-house Exynos SoCs in various S5 models.
One of the big buzz phrases circulating at the start of this year's Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain is "wearable tech." Lucy Du with more on what we can expect to hear out of this year's event. Report: The latest generation of smart watches can alert you to messages on your phone and can even scroll through text. Martian watches are among the latest innovations. Stanley Kinsey is the company's president. "Martian watches are about getting notifications and being able to respond to them. We have two different lines of watches. One actually has, this one I'm wearing, has a microphone and speaker on the watch - that you can connect to the voice commands on your smartphone. Android or Apple IOS. So in this case, if I were to get a text message coming in from my phone, it would show up on the watch. I would feel a custom vibration pattern. If it's long, short, long, I know that it's an email. Long, short, short, a text message." Meanwhile Kyocera, a Japanese manufacturer, claims to have produced handsets which can survive a dip in water. Its "Torque" model can survive up to 30 minutes, submerged in water up to one meter deep. Microsoft is also here in Barcelona. It's announced that there'll be an update to its Windows 8 software platform this spring. Microsoft hopes that the update will also improve the launching of applications and the interchange of apps. Away from Microsoft and there's a focus this year on the future of internet-connected gadgets. They're set to talk more and more to home appliances - with mobile devices likely to be at the centre of the conversation. Samsung has scheduled one of its 'unpacked' events. The Galaxy S5 is expected to be on show. Nokia is rumored to have a new Android phone to reveal, with Sony and LG putting up their latest handsets. Elsewhere, ahead of the Mobile World Congress, Mozilla is promoting a new search tool for gadgets with Firefox OS. It's the "adaptive app search" which promises to connect users with content faster and more easily than before. Peter Dolanjksi, a Mozilla spokesman, elaborates on more details. "On the home screen, you can see here I have a search bar. If I type into that search bar, I can type anything I'm looking for, content like U2, the band. So if I type in U2 instead of having to search for music apps and music ticket applications, lyric applications. I just type in the name of the band and immediately I'm presented with relevant mobile applications to me. So Soundcloud, Spotify, Ticketmaster. From there, I can use one of those applications without having to install it. And if I like it, I can add it to my home screen." The adaptive app search function is already available for use.
