In February, Australia launched its first National Students Omburdsman as part of a national strategy to tackle sexcual violence on campus. International students who experienced sexual violence in university settings can also turn to the agency to seek support. For a long time, student leaders and advocates have found international students survivors of sexual violence have been left in the dark, due to indeaquate support. In March, SBS Chinese reported on a former Chinese student at Griffith College experienced sexual harassment from a tutor. Griffith College told SBS Chinese that they were aware of the allegation, and had met with the student. Under the new National Students Ombudsman, what kind of support international students can expect from the agency over sexual violence on campus? In this episode of Weekend One on One, SBS's Wing Kuang talks to Iain Anderson, the Commonwealth Ombudsman of the agency.

Following two and a half years in Forensic Science at TU Dublin, the COVID-19 pandemic made Peter Boyne realise the course was not for him. Now, he works to help Ireland transition to a renewable energy future as part of the EirGrid workforce. As another year of Leaving Cert students await their results, more and more students are beginning to steer away from the traditional routes to careers and education, by selecting opportunities based in the workplace, while in turn, employers are creating new ways to attract talent to suit their specific needs. EirGrid, the operator and developer of Ireland's electricity grid, began the Earn and Learn programme in 2023, offering successful applicants the chance to gain experience in a work environment, while also offering them the choice to access third-level education. Originally from Malahide in Dublin, Peter Boyne completed his Leaving Certificate in 2019 and went on to study Forensic Science in TU Dublin that autumn. However, when the COVID-19 pandemic hit in 2020, and universities had to move to online learning, Peter's perspective of college changed. "During COVID, college went towards online learning and as a practical learner, I didn't work well learning over a screen and I didn't feel I was getting much benefit from my course, so I decided to drop out." On the hunt for his next opportunity, Peter saw the Earn and Learn Programme by EirGrid on LinkedIn, which would allow him to simultaneously gain experience in a work environment, while offering him the choice to access third-level education. "The Earn & Learn programme was exactly what I was looking for. EirGrid would support my college education while allowing me to be financially independent and gain experience by working in the office." Now nine months into the two-year Earn and Learn programme, Peter is a Market Associate within the Operations team at EirGrid. He is currently undertaking a diploma with Griffith College and, this September, will begin a level 8 in Business Management part-time. "My team look after the running of multiple grid interconnectors across the country and in helping lay the groundwork for future projects such as the Celtic Interconnector, which will get us connected to mainland Europe, via France. I also help organise and run meetings and workshops for our team. "The work is very interesting and something I don't think I would have done if I had not joined this programme. "It was important for me to be able to work while I was in college so that I could enjoy my life outside of education and work because while working full-time, you are still entitled to your holidays and time off." By 2030 the national electricity system must be developed to allow for 80% of our electricity to come from renewable sources, as per Government climate targets, something that Peter is passionate about. He wishes more programmes like this would come on stream for other students who do not suit traditional long term third-level study. "Before joining EirGrid I did not have a big interest in renewable energy, but I knew it was going to be important. Through my first nine months in EirGrid I have gained a much wider knowledge of the sector and enjoy learning. "You don't have to know a lot about the sector or area to join a programme like this, you learn as you go and learn to work alongside your colleagues. I'd encourage students to consider all options for after the Leaving Cert. College isn't for everyone."

And it's high time for companies to begin offering wellness trainings, because increasing employee productivity begins with bringing that awareness into the workplace. Our anxieties stem from the stresses we tend to keep to ourselves and deal with alone. It is more important now more than ever for us to learn mindfulness and meditation as they will greatly help us in overcoming any challenges life may throw at us.Mindfulness begins at home. The key to having a healthy mind of your children is to ensure positive connections between all members of the household, allowing children to express themselves, playing games that are appropriate to their age, reading books, and checking out meditation and podcasts online, and letting them try them out. "If you're interested in kind of spirituality and any kind of meditation, what it brings in is in a choice – the choice in how we speak, how we respond. I suppose it's kind of trying to make people aware of the words that they use, how it can help in their inner world and the inner landscape, and then in their outer world with people around them." — Caroline Murphy-Bennis Connect with Caroline Murphy-Bennis:Website: www.flourishbydesign.co. Marketing is a key process regulated by data protection and marketers are one of the main users of personal data in any organisation. Direct marketing has been regulated in a number of guises for many years and the law and regulation has been subject to constant development and clarification. There are a range of penalties for non-compliance of marketing data protection breaches, and the potential for brand and reputational damage is significant. Kathy Jacobs, former Compliance Institute President, speaks to Steven Roberts, Head of Marketing in Griffith College, on marketing rules, challenges for marketers in the context of GDPR and regulation, and key data protection developments that compliance professionals/DPOs should look out for in 2022.

Lisa Zimmermann joins Eric to share her research and teaching tips in sustainable design from her day job as Lecturer at Griffith College in Dublin, Ireland. She laments how much we still don't teach in design school – from where paper comes from to the life cycle of the products we make, and how changes in our design curriculums don't come fast enough to match the quickly changing times.
This episode we speak with Dr Kristy Seymour, founder and head trainer at Circus Stars on the Gold Coast.Founded in 2013 it was the very first circus school in the world to be dedicated to children on the autism spectrum. Circus Stars classes are inclusive, creative, risky and challenging all in a fun and supportive gentle environment and in 2017 Circus Stars was awarded an Autism Queensland Creative Futures Recognition award. Inspired by Dr Reg Bolton's theory of the 5 key elements of why circus works for children, the Circus Stars Program aims to help young people have fun, learn to take safe risks, build trust in teamwork, encourage individuality, and explore working hard on their skills.Working her way up from a 19 year old drama and physical theatre student to a professional circus artist, Kristy has worked and trained with Flipside Circus, CIRCA & Vulcana Circus and now also lectures at Griffith University and Griffith College on the Gold Coast.Dr Seymour has worked tirelessly to create the academic research to prove the Circus Stars method to the clinical and autism communities to the point where her work has been added to Cirque du Soleil's social development department, Cirque du Monde and is now a recommended and reputable program for families and also practitioners looking to expand their own practice by attending the annual Circus Stars' Professional Development Series. What we love about Kristy and her work with Circus Stars is that her own love of circus - the rebellious, adventurous spirit of circus - embodies everything that she does and infuses her belief that children of all abilities, but especially autism, should have access to the skills, risk and freedom that circus provides. The Circus Stars Professional Development Series - July 25 & 31, 2021. Anniversaries are something that Sasha & Venetia have spoken about on several episodes of the podcasts so far. They can spark a huge range of emotion, and often bring back a lot of sad and difficult memories. Some like to mark an occasion, while others are happy to see the back of these milestone dates. Often the way someone chooses to remember their loved one is dependant on their years or months grieving in between, and what form of relationship that is kept with the deceased. This week on Grief Encounters, Sasha chats with an old friend of her’s Ollie Skehan, as he approaches the 20th anniversary of his friend’s tragic death this Sunday, October 27th. In October 1999, Niamh O’Herlihy was travelling in a car with her sister Anita, a close friend of theirs and her one-year-old daughter, when they were involved in a tragic, and fatal car accident that shocked the country to its core. Niamh and Anita were members of an extremely promising girl-band called Nivita, that were making moves in the record industry right before the accident. Ollie and Niamh met in during their time studying together in Griffith College and immediately became close companions after enrolling. In the interview, Ollie casts his mind back to the days before and after the accident, and the vividness of it is clear to see. With Ollie’s accounts of those days, it is clear to see how much the world has changed in those 20 years, particularly in the ways we find out about the loss of a loved one. He also speaks about his relationship with the O’Herlihy family and how keeping in touch with Niamh’s parents allows him to still have a relationship with Niamh herself. We were delighted to be approached by Ollie to record this beautiful episode as his own testament to his loving friendship with Niamh, his poignant way of marking the 20 year anniversary. Do international institutions free us from our colonialist history, or do they perpetuate it? This episode takes a critical look at international legal institutions through the lens of Third World Approaches to International Law, a legal movement explained by Thamil Ananthavinayagan, professor of international law at Griffith College in Dublin. Then, University of Hawaii futurist and political scientist Jairus Grove discusses the history of global violence and his new book Savage Ecology: War and Geopolitics at the End of the World. This series is produced in cooperation with the Common Good Foundation, and sponsored by the World Peace Through Law section of the Washington State Bar Association.
To mark the selection this year (2019) of Edna O'Brien's Country Girls trilogy as Dublin's ‘One City One Book', the History Ireland Hedge School considered the issue of censorship. Banned on its release in 1960, The Country Girls is often credited with breaking the silence on sexual matters in ‘Catholic Ireland'. While by the 1970s such censorship had been considerably relaxed, it was replaced by political censorship in the form of Section 31. That in turn has passed but we are still left with the censorship of onerous defamation laws, not to mention internet and social media ‘trolling', which has added a new twist to the censorship debate. To discuss these and related matters, History Ireland editor, Tommy Graham, was joined by Donal Fallon (Come Here To Me), Angela Nagle (Kill All Normies), Mary Kenny (Goodbye to Catholic Ireland) and Niall Meehan (Head of Journalism, Griffith College).
