Send us a textWhat if a simple wardrobe choice could change the way you're perceived on stage? Theodore Taylor, better known as the "Bowtie Guy," joins us to unravel the origins of his distinctive comedic persona. Inspired by a character from Doctor Who, the bow tie has become more than just an accessory—it's his comedic badge, helping him craft punchlines that linger long after the laughter fades. Theodore takes us on his journey from the Houston Improv, sharing how he navigates the expectations and stereotypes often placed on black comedians, and why adaptability is the secret sauce in today's comedy scene.Peek behind the curtain of stand-up comedy's unpredictable world as Theodore recounts his early career's comedic highs and lows. From a Michael Jackson joke that fell flat to a humorous saga involving a clean comedy show punchline mishap, Theodore's stories highlight the industry's camaraderie and the lessons learned from diverse audiences. We also explore the challenges and tensions within the comedy circuits, particularly for black comedians, and reflect on how societal dynamics shape a comedian's life both on and off stage.Theodore opens up about the essential ingredients for success in comedy: likability, consistency, and relatability. Through candid discussions, we examine how personal heroes can disappoint and how comedians balance their intellectual and misfit personas. Theodore also spotlights his special, "Theodore ME Taylor's Bowtie Guy," inviting listeners to follow his journey and connect with our comedy community. Jay Pharoah stops by the Roula And Ryan show to promote his shows at the Houston Improv this weekend. Website
In this episode, I talk about my weekend at the Houston Improv, The Grammys, Travis Kelce's fade, and going to The Dentist.
I picked up some surprise sets this weekend alongside Cristela Alonzo at the Houston Improv. Great crowds, and a nice opportunity to finally run some jokes from the special without any pressure. I also caught Oppenheimer, finally! Christopher Nolan is a fantastic storyteller. I try to stay there, and keep most if what I talk about spoiler free. And like most things do, this sends me down a rabbit hole thinking about how much I truly don't understand about almost everything I encounter. Please consider telling a friend if you dig the show.

The guys are back from a couple eventful nights in the great state of Texas. First we recap Luka's dominance on the court, but he wasn't the only Maverick putting on a show. At halftime we witnessed a whipping of sorts. A tribute that Rory loved. Meg and B Simone were kind enough to join us during the Dallas show and even hit the showers after. We immediately drove to Houston for our first day show at the Houston Improv where the couples and Versuz were incredible. Anyway, did you know Mal ran a train?! Rory, Julian, and Eddin are still asking follow up questions. The guys continue their long nights out on tour. Unfortunately this time we were following Eddin. While Eddin puffed hookah and guzzled tequila Mal and Rory left within 10 mins of entering the club. Tune in to hear the guys discuss all of this and more +
On Sunday November 20th, the New Rory N Mal podcast had a show in Houston Texas! Of course GhiaLogic had to pull up and see her favorite podcast at the Houston Improv. She got to meet and chat with the hosts and even speak to Julian & Eddin! The show was so funny and interactive. Really gave GhiaLogic some ideas of what to do at her next live show. Highlighted in this episode were different elements of their live show, things I learned from Mal, and just how inspirational these two men are. The podcast game is real. Don't ever think that there is no money or impact being made. Rory and Mal are perfect definitions of that. Definitely subscribe to their podcast and support. Then, Dwight Silverman answers your technology questions. And we learn how therapy helped Saturday Night Live cast member Chris Redd be a better comedian and how rap helped him get over a debilitating stutter. Comedian Ali Siddiq spent six years in a maximum-security penitentiary on a 15-year sentence for trafficking cocaine. Siddiq discovered his voice to make people laugh behind bars. And now, he's found success all over the country and across the globe with his laid-back, sometimes stand-up, comic storytelling about being locked up, fatherhood and racism. Though he's appeared on major outlets like Comedy Central, Showtime, HBO and BET, he is reluctant to leave the city of Houston -- a place he calls home -- and relocate to media-centric cities like Los Angeles, New York or even Atlanta. Is this unwillingness to move preventing him from "being seen" more in television and movies? And how has his incarceration impacted his own style of comedy flair? Find out as host Eddie Robinson invites veteran comedian Ali Siddiq into our I SEE U studios for an open and honest dialogue about his career, what he'd be doing if he hadn't gone to prison and how he's dealing with the notions of 'cancel culture' in his profession.

GOD AND POETRY OPENED DOORS FOR ME I NEVER KNEW EXISTED." His latest film P.E.N.S. - Poetic Energy Needed in Society is an official selection in the Montreal Independent Film Festival, The Indie Fest Film Awards, and The Canadian Cinematography Awards.Meet the poet whose heart pulsates with his passion for the art form that saved his life. Fans proclaim his energy is contagious, his message overdue. The spoken word performer and actor known as Yolan A Poet's Poet was born in San Diego, California to working-class parents with their own penchant for writing and dramatic interpretation. Yolan, a former gang member, has seen the worst and best life has to offer; both inspire him. After he was nearly felled by a massive heart attack, and was added to the heart transplant list, Yolan sought greater purpose. Poetry became his release. These days, he taps into an inherent ability to match words to feelings, verse to reason, meters to moments, and linguistic patterns to deeper meaning. Where many succumb to illness, Yolan perseveres and channels the rhythm of the manmade chambers implanted inside him to spread messages of power and pride through every mic he touches.A history enthusiast, Yolan identifies generational guideposts to pen poems that resonate and inform. From the scourge of the crack epidemic to the viciousness of Southern California gang violence to the devastation of Hurricane Harvey and the continuing plague of racial injustice, his performances thunder with truth, intelligence, and practical reason. He cunningly adds hints of hip-hop culture and politics into his work to enhance his broad appeal. Yolan brings reliability to the stage by infusing heartwarming personal experiences into most of his work. If you listen close enough, you are acutely aware of the influence Gil Scott-Heron, Dr. Maya Angelou, Robert Frost, Edgar Alan Poe, Langston Hughes and others have on the artist. The result? Audiences flock to see the award-winning poet perform at the Houston Improv, Houston's House of Blues, NRG Stadium, and top venues across the nation. Yolan is a published author of the brilliantly written book; The Unknown Child Named Yolan.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-zennurgy-podcast/exclusive-content
