John Hall~ Founder Influencer & Co ~ Current Series ~ 100 Interviews with 100 Major Influencers   As we dive down this rabbit hole of influence we have noticed there's a couple different types of influencers that are out there. There is the influencer that everybody knows. This influencer is the one that everybody sees. The influencer that has a massive public image, you see them all over Instagram, Twitter, the media, Facebook, LinkedIn, and YouTube. These influencers are what you could call Spotlight Influencers. Then you have another type of influencer that isn't so much in the spotlight. This influencer is a more of an underground influencer. These are people that have significant influence but decide to stay under the radar just a little bit. They still have their personal brands, they still get into media sources, but they are not the typical faces you might see when you think of ‘influencers'.  Today's guest is a master at the second type of influence. John Hall has been called by Inc. magazine as “one of the most powerful people in media that you have never met!” He is Ernest and Young's Entrepreneur of the Year in 2016, he has been recognized as one of  Business Journal's Top 100 Visionaries. The company he co-founded was ranked #239 on the Inc. 500 and #72 on the Forbes list of the most promising companies in America.  There's an art and science to this type of influence and on the show today John shares with us some of his best secrets to maintaining this influence.  We talk with John about how he developed the company Influence & Co, how it became the largest creator and distributor of expert content for major media outlets. We talk with John about building influence with his clients and some of the key takeaways that he learned from seven years of helping other businesses gain influence. John has some core values as an influencer, and it really boils down to simple things such as personal relationships, how he gauges every single personal acquaintance, and how he decides whether he's going to continue that personal relationship or let it go. Towards the end of the show we chat about two of his really awesome articles that I enjoyed reading, Perception of Influence vs. Actual Influence and how you can use both of those to grow your brand, as well as 7 Tips for Seeking Out and Seducing the Best Influencers to Love Your Brand..          02:43: Who is John Hall?      10:38: John on His Entrepreneurial Journey      13:30: John on Influence      15:41: John on Managing Your Ego      17:29: The Story Behind Influence & Co.      19:41: How John Obtained the Calendar.com Domain      22:18: John on How To Maintain Relationships      27:18: The Mission of Calendar.com      34:46: John on How He Uses His Influence to Grow Calendar.com      37:51: How To Get Started Pitching Your Writing To Major Platforms      40:56: Perception of Influence vs. Actual Influence      45:25: How To Identify Fake Influencers      48:09: John's Favorite Influencers      53:05: How To Keep A Low Profile As An Influencer      57:05: John on Choosing Influence Over Money 01:01:50: John's Favorite Conferences 01:03:27: A Sneak Peek into John's Book, "Top of Mind" 01:05:21: John on The Future of Influencer Marketing Contact Info:   http://www.johnhallspeaking.com/ https://marketinginsidergroup.com/strategy/12-keynote-sales-speakers-you-shouldnt-miss/ https://twitter.com/InfluenceandCo https://twitter.com/johnhall https://www.influenceandco.com/ https://www.inc.com/author/john-hall?cid=landermore John on Forbes: https://www.forbes.com/sites/johnhall/#28a7d6253845 Perception of Influence vs. Actual Influence: https://www.inc.com/john-hall/the-perception-of-influence-vs-actual-influence.html 7 Tips for Seeking Out and Seducing the Best Influencers for Your Brand https://www.inc.com/john-hall/7-tips-for-seeking-out-and-seducing-the-best-influencers-to-love-your-brand.html Calender.com: https://www.calendar.com/

Do Employers Need to Censor Political Talk at Work?

HRCI Work | Life Podcast

HR News Flash This is your HR News Flash for the week of October 1st, 2018, your weekly briefing on talent management and the world of work. To read more about related workplace topics, please visit the HR Certification Institute Blog, HR Leads Business, at HRCI.org. — This week’s topic: Do Employers Need to Censor Political Talk at Work? There is one thing we can all agree on: The current climate of political discourse has - occasionally if not often - brought out the worst in people. Political opinions have created unprecedented rifts between friends and family members. But what about political discussions at work? Officially, the views are mixed. An Indeed poll of 2,000 U.S. employees shared that more than half of employees – 54 percent – say they are generally comfortable with the current level of political discourse at work. Only one-in-five say there should be more censorship. But this doesn’t erase the tensions that many are experiencing. Passions seem to be running high these days in what some people are calling a growing tribal society. Some experts believe we are living in a "Cold Civil War" period. This puts human resource managers in a tough spot — with a responsibility to keep discussions respectful. "Educate your employees on the value and importance of having a diverse and inclusive environment," advises Courtney Mudd, Director of Human Resources at Influence & Co., commenting as a member of the Forbes Human Resources Council. "Let them know that dialogue is encouraged, but the office is not the environment for debates. If employees aren't open to hearing different points of view, they should refrain from starting and/or joining the conversation." Heather Bussing, contributing as an HRExaminer analyst on the topic of politics and work, reminds us that harassment, bullying and discrimination – even of the political variety – should not be tolerated. The danger, she says, is that "we are starting to equate humans with their political views. This is a mistake. We should judge people by what they do or fail to do, not what they believe or whom they voted for." Her advice includes encouraging people to "take a break from politics while they are at work" and eliminating hate speech. "Some people," she says, "are feeling emboldened to make derogatory remarks to minorities, [the LGBTQ community], the disabled and women. If there are extenuating circumstances, a few days or a week of unpaid leave can be an effective deterrent to future problems. Otherwise, this should be grounds for immediate termination." Keep in mind, as well, that political affiliation is a protected class in most states. HR plays an important role as advisor and counselor in the politically charged world we now live in. Political harassment, like other offensive behaviors, can be thwarted with proactive measures to remind employees of "right and wrong" behaviors. On the plus side, people are more politically motivated and involved than ever before. But political passion should not become disrespectful or disruptive to the point where it creates a hostile work environment or even turns workers against each other. Educate employees, managers, and leaders that diversity and inclusion also require openness to different political points of view. After all, the customers that our organizations serve also diverse political opinions. "R-E-S-P-E-C-T," as the late Aretha Franklin would say, is what we all need in this highly heated political environment. Just a little bit can go a long way. — Well, that’s your HR News Flash for the week of October 1st, 2018. Thanks again for listening to the HR News Flash from HRCI. How do we become ‘known’ for something and remain top-of-mind? How can you use content marketing to help you achieve influence and engage with those who matter to you? Today’s guest speaker has some ideas. John is the CEO and co-founder of Influence & Co., a tech-enabled content marketing agency that helps brands and individuals extract and leverage their expertise to create, publish, and distribute content to gain influence, visibility, and credibility with their key audiences. Despite having experience under John’s belt, he would constantly walk into meetings and people would get confused as to why this ‘kid’ was there. John was running into trust barriers right out the gate and he hated that feeling. He knew he couldn’t have been the only one, so he and his partners decided to create Influence & Co. to help others overcome this barrier. Bill has also run into this in the past. He struggled to get taken seriously as well and one of his bosses even suggested wearing prop glasses to look older. We all deal with things like this, especially as leaders, it’s hard to get taken seriously when you look like you have no experience. This is where trust plays an important role. How can people become top-of-mind and build trust naturally? It starts with being helpful. Everybody needs help in a professional and personal setting. Ask them what that missing piece is and then begin to connect the dots by introducing them to others. This works wonders on an in-person level, but how do you scale up trust? The best way to scale up trust and grow your influence is through creating content. Remember, people don’t want to deal with ‘the brand.’ They want to deal with the people in the brand. By humanizing yourself, you’re humanizing your company and it attracts wonderful recruitment opportunities as well. Consistency in your marketing message plays a huge factor in building trust within your audience. People’s memories are a powerful thing and if you hit people with the right type of content at the right time, they will remember you forever.   Interview Links: Influenceandco.com Topofmindbook.com John on LinkedIn   Resources: Scaling Up for Business Growth Workshops: Take the first step to mastering the Rockefeller Habits by attending one of our workshops. Are you looking to get your agency revenue to the $1 million mark? Already at $1 million and struggle to get beyond it? What got you where you are now, isn't what's going to get your agency to the next level. Have you lost focus or just don't know where to look? Then it's time your agency explored the power of content and started making investments into it's future. In this episode, we'll cover: Growing your agency from the first million to the next million. One growth strategy often forgotten. 5 simple tips to help scale your agency. #1 Technology your agency should be using. How to find your agency's focus. Know yourself and build a solid team. Today I got to talk to John Hall, CEO and co-founder of the content marketing agency, Influence & Co. He's also a keynote speaker and author of the best-selling business book, Top of Mind. Considered a content marketing guru, John shares with us tips and tricks he has learned along the way, as he grew his company from just 2 people in 2007 up to 130 employees in 2018. Implementing John's strategies will help scale your agency and position you as a thought leader and influencer in your agency's niche. Growing Your Agency from the First Million to the Next Million The biggest challenge your agency will face when scaling is taking on clients and employees you shouldn't. To avoid this classic pitfall, use these two tips in your agency process: Take time to hire the right person. Having the right people in the right seats will make all the difference. Really look at potential clients and ask "why?". Make sure you are only taking on the right clients for the right reasons. Having processes in place is important when scaling. One Growth Strategy Often Forgotten Simply put -- CONTENT Content is more than a  lead generator or marketing vehicle, content is the core of the company. Content allows your agency to share it's culture, industry trends, leadership, vision, and more. Your agency wants to generate content in "themes" to outline the environment and to attract people, whether it's employees or clients. You can't just say the words in an interview or pitch, you need to be continually communicating it as a company. This allows potential clients or employees to see what your agency is all about and makes them want to work with you. Define your agency's core values and live them out. 5 Simple Tips To Help Scale Your Agency Amplify your agency's services on your website with an excellent user experience. Make an investment in what your agency does. Utilize technology that can help your agency scale by saving you time. Create efficient practice that will lead to higher margins. Leverage content across the company by multi-purposing it. Differentiation can be hard, but it is important. Don't be like the competition - stand apart from them! #1 Technology Your Agency Should Be Using Technology needs depend on the agency, but to have the absolute best tech for your agency's needs, you need to create it. Creating your own technology allows customization towards your agency's needs. If there is a problem you're experiencing, and you can create a tech tool as the solution, that's the ultimate benefit. How To Find Your Agency's Focus Where is the biggest opportunity for your agency? It's not about what is most exciting, it's about what is going to drive longterm success. What are the things that your agency can say no to and what are those things that your agency needs to say yes to? Owners typically jump quickly and this can lead to a loss of respect from your team, as well as opportunity costs. Don't put your agency in a position where it is no longer doing productive work, because you're too busy "chasing butterflies." Know Yourself And Build A Solid Team Who you get into business with and how you treat the people around you is key! Your agency needs trust at the core. John and his two partners are in sync with another and he attributes it to total transparency. Although I usually say: "you either know the bad partner or you are the bad partner,"  I've seen some really successful agency partnerships too. However, having an out clause and operating agreement in place can keep things from getting messy if someone wants out. And most importantly, your personal brand is important. You are a vehicle to create opportunities for your agency and you need to invest in it and in yourself. Looking for a Payroll and HR Solution for your Agency? Payroll and benefits are hard.
