"The world's first iron bridge spans the Ironbridge Gorge in Shropshire in the English Midlands. Through the gorge runs the River Severn, which is prone to flooding - and becoming more so, through climate change. The Ironbridge Gorge is often called the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution. The area contains all the elements of progress that contributed to the rapid development of this industrial region in the 18th century, from the mines themselves to the railway lines. "Nearby, the blast furnace of Coalbrookdale, built in 1708, is a reminder of the discovery of coke. The bridge at Ironbridge had a considerable influence on developments in the fields of technology and architecture. This recording was made at the highest point of the arch of the bridge, at a time when the river was in flood and parts of the surrounding area were inaccessible as a result. You hear the rush of the water some 18m below the bridge, the voices of tourists and visitors walking past, the sounds of the town (stereo L) and a passing light aeroplane, and an angrily barking dog! You also hear the clicking and beeping of tourists' cameras as they photograph the flooding, including one who stands directly above the recorder, then accidentally kicks it over and apologises! "Many thousands of people visit the Iron Bridge and the surrounding area (UNESCO WHS) but mostly in fine weather. Local people's experience of the Gorge inevitably includes experiencing the impact of flooding, hence I thought it was important to capture a sound few visitors will have heard." "This composition tells the story of an iron bridge, interweaving history, tragedy, and renewal. Drawing from Franz Kafka's enigmatic short story The Bridge and Renzo Piano's speech at the inauguration of the Genoa Saint George Bridge, it explores the profound symbolism of bridges—not just as structures, but as living entities that connect, endure, and sometimes fall. "At the heart of this work are two iconic bridges: The Iron Bridge, Gorge – The world's first iron bridge, completed in 1779 over the River Severn, a pioneering feat of engineering and a tribute to human ingenuity. The Saint George Bridge, Genoa – Designed by Renzo Piano, this bridge was born from tragedy, rising in place of the collapsed Ponte Morandi, which claimed lives on August 14, 2018. Its reconstruction symbolises resilience and the power of renewal. "The composition is deeply connected to sound as a storytelling medium. The barking of dogs forms the foundation of the recording, evoking both a raw, primal presence and the echoes of history. To further enhance the conceptual depth, I chose a quote from Kafka's The Bridge to be read by an AI voice. This artificial rendering of Kafka's words adds an uncanny, almost spectral presence—blurring the line between the human and the mechanical, much like the bridges themselves, which are both engineered structures and deeply symbolic entities. "Interwoven with the music of renowned composer Lucio Lazzaruolo, these sonic elements create an immersive and emotional landscape—one where bridges breathe, speak, and remember. "By merging Kafka's poetic vision of bridges as human-like beings with the legacies of these remarkable structures, this piece seeks to exalt the heritage, memory, and deeper meaning of bridges in our world." Ironbridge Gorge reimagined by Giovanna Iorio (concept) Lucio Lazzaruolo (music). ——————— This sound is part of the Sonic Heritage project, exploring the sounds of the world's most famous sights. Clare meets a group of passionate walkers responsible for the redesign and relaunch of the Shropshire Way long distance footpath. Back in 2016 they got together, in collaboration with the local Council, to reroute it and improve the waymarking. And now they have a 200 mile footpath in a figure of eight, centred on Shrewsbury. For Ramblings they met Clare at the Benthall Hall National Trust carpark and set off on a 5.5 mile linear route crossing the world famous Iron Bridge, onto Loamhole Dingle, Braggers Hill and Little Wenlock. Leading the way were Amanda Hartley-Newton and Audrey Menhinick (who with her late Ramblers colleague, set up the Shropshire Way Association). They, along with a handful of fellow volunteers, tell Clare what a satisfying – if challenging – project this has been.OS MAP: OS Explorer 242 Telford, Ironbridge and the Wrekin Grid Ref: SJ 657 024 https://shropshireway.org.uk/Presenter: Clare Balding Producer: Karen Gregor

We discuss how a Christian author deals with supposed curses, her English Garden, and she tells the story of Iron Bridge in England. Patrons hear what makes her a hippie homesteader.Of Gold and Shadows by Michelle GriepThe shadows hold secrets darker than they ever imagined. . . .In 1888 Victorian England, Ami Dalton navigates a clandestine dual life. By day, she strives to establish herself as a respected Egyptologist, overcoming the gender biases that permeate academia. But with a heart for saving black-market artifacts from falling into the wrong hands, she is most often disguised as her alter ego, the Shadow Broker. After eight years in India, Oxford's most eligible bachelor, Edmund Price, has come out of the shadows to run for Parliament and is in search of an Egyptologist to value a newly acquired collection. Expecting a renowned Oxford professor, Edmund instead finds himself entangled with Ami, the professor's determined daughter. As they delve into the treasures, their connection deepens, but trouble emerges when a golden griffin--rumored to bear the curse of Amentuk--surfaces, and they're left to wonder if the curse really is at play, or if something more nefarious is hiding among the shadows. . . ."Don't miss all the romance, adventure, and danger in [this] new page-turner."--JULIE KLASSEN, bestselling author of Shadows of Swanford AbbeyGet your copy of Of Gold and Shadows by Michelle Griep.Michelle Griep is an author, blogger, and occasional super-hero when her cape is clean.Dare I be so bold as to call myself an author? Wall Street closed higher across the key indices on Friday as favourable economic data strengthened investor sentiment in the U.S. economy. The S&P500 rose for a sixth straight session, ending the day up 0.53%, the Dow Jones rose 0.64% and the tech-heavy Nasdaq added 0.18% despite Tesla shares slumping over 13% after the EV giant posted disappointing fourth-quarter results and warned of lower vehicle volume growth for the year ahead.US GDP data out late last week indicated the world's largest economy grew at a rate of 3.3% in Q4 which was well above economists' expectations of a 2% growth and provides further support that the U.S. economy remains resilient despite the currently high interest rate environment.Personal consumption expenditures data out of the US also pointed in the right direction for economy stability against inflation falling in fresh data out last Thursday. The PCI data, a preferred measure of inflation for the fed, showed an increase of 2% for the latest quarter.Over in Europe, markets closed at a two-year high on Friday as investors welcomed a slew of favourable economic data, the ECB's latest rate decision and corporate fourth quarter earnings results. The STOXX600 rose 1.1% on Friday led by household goods jumping 5.2%. Germany's DAX ended Friday's session up 0.32%, the French CAC added 2.28%, and, in the UK, the FTSE100 rose 1.4%.Luxury brand retailer LVMH jumped 13% on Friday after posting strong fourth quarter results indicating sales which is a key boost for the luxury market in a time of slowing consumer spend. The European Central bank also met market expectations late last week by maintaining the ECB interest rate steady at 4% for a third straight time.Across the Asia markets on Friday, stocks mostly declined as investors piled out of EV stocks in the region amid concerns of slowing demand, while investors also digested inflation data out of Tokyo. Hong Kong's Hang Seng dropped 1.8% on Friday, China's CSI ended the day down 0.27%, and Japan's Nikkei fell 1.34%. Japan's inflation reading for January came in softer compared to December's reading at 1.6% growth YoY and below the 1.9% rise economists were expecting.Locally on Friday, the ASX200 was closed for the Australia day public holiday. What to watch today:Ahead of the first trading session for the week here in Australia, the SPI futures are expecting the ASX200 to open the first trading day of the week up 0.19%.On the commodities front this morning, oil is up 0.84% at US$78.01/barrel, gold is down 0.07% at US$2018.38/ounce and iron ore is up 1.10% at US$137.50/tonne.AU$1.00 dollar is buying US$0.66, 97.43 Japanese Yen, 51.74 British Pence and NZ$1.08.Trading Ideas:Bell Potter has maintained a sell rating on Fortescue (ASX:FMG) but has slightly increased the price on the big miner following the release of the company's December quarter results including iron ore shipments coming in-line with Bell Potter expectations, however, water supply disruptions continued to impact high grade magnetite production at Iron Bridge and FY24 guidance has been lowered again. And Trading Central has identified a bearish signal on Boral (ASX:BLD) following the formation of a pattern over a period of 29-days which is roughly the same amount of time the share price may fall from the close of $5.26 to the range of $4.92 to $4.98 according to standard principles of technical analysis.

GOAT MANThe legend of the Goatman dates back at least to the 1950's and became popularized further in the 1970s when it was blamed for the decapitation of a dog in 1971. This creature is believed to reside in the woods of Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. Reported to resemble a human but with goat like features, he has been likened to the mythical faun. With a body covered in hair and hooves instead of feet, the goatman has the legs and lower body of a goat, but with the upper body of a man with horns that protrude form his head.IntroductionIntroductionStorySarah's Iron Bridge will be on social media.
