A hat trick for Rian Johnson! The director feeds us the third Benoit Blanc film, Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, and once again, gets us exercising our brains and funny bone. Luke hated the cast chemistry but enjoyed everything else especially Josh O'Connor. Corrye found himself fond of the commentary on faith and politics. The Chumps have a ball exploring the nooks and crannies of this puzzle box. PLUS: Remembering Rob Reiner, forgiving Netflix, and Luke's most bizarre 5 Questions yet!

The cast is stacked top to bottom, and everyone clearly understands the assignment. No weak links here — every performance adds suspicion or straight-up chaos to the mystery. Daniel Craig continues to be the MVP, fully settled into Blanc's eccentric brilliance. The mystery itself is twisty, layered, and fun, constantly nudging you to rethink what you think you know. While it doesn't completely reinvent the franchise, it proves that strong characters, sharp dialogue, and confident performances can still carry the weight. Is it the best Knives Out? That's debatable but I think so. We watched the recently released Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, the third film in the Benoit Blanc detective franchise written and directed by Rian Johnson and starring Daniel Craig. We get right into themes explored throughout the movie - the juxtaposition of Blanc and Father Jud and their differing views on faith, the temptation of power and wealth and how it preys on humanity, the many ways in which we tell stories about ourselves and each other, and the inherent power of collective judgement and shame. There's a mystery afoot on today's episode of Script Apart – and that mystery is how you write a film like Wake Up Dead Man, the new Knives Out movie from my guest today, Rian Johnson. How do you craft a whodunit that's simultaneously gripping, hilarious and loaded with weighty reflections on religion's use as a weapon of fear in our current political climate? In the words of Benoit Blanc, it “makes no damn sense” to me, “Compels me, though.”Which is why it was such a treat to ask the man himself. Rian's a filmmaker who you might know from 2005 high school noir Brick, 2008's The Brothers Bloom or the fantastic 2012 sci-fi Looper. He directed one of the best episodes of TV this side of the millennium in the form of Breaking Bad's ‘Fly' episode, and created the brilliant Poker Face, starring Natasha Lyonne. In 2019, he wrote and directed Knives Out, starring Daniel Craig as a Southern-accented sleuth, which was a huge sensation. A sequel followed in 2022, as part of a major deal with Netflix. And somewhere amid all that, he made a low-budget indie that probably completely passed under your radar because it was barely discussed upon release. Never heard of it personally.Wake Up Dead Man is maybe his most personal and politically-charged film yet, though, as you'll hear in this conversation. And that is the subject of the At The Flicks Christmas lecture for this year.  It's a weighty subject, so we have to call on an expert to help address this question.  Bond fan Niall Browne from Movies In Focus joins Jeff and Graham to discuss how did we get here and Amazon's current handling of the James Bond legacy (clue, it's not off to a good start). Of course, a screenwriter and director have been allocated to a new Bond project.  We talk about both and assess if they are the right people for the job or is Amazon “front loading” with talent over ideas? Being life long James Bond aficionados, we also offer some advice on what could or should be next for the superspy – that is, we talk about what we would like to see. Also, we consider the right attributes for the next actor to play James Bond, and of course, like everyone else, we throw in some names. Some of which may be controversial. So, before you settle down with your Christmas Pud (British reference there) to watch Sean Connery, George Lazenby, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan or Daniel Craig, why not give us a listen?
