“Norm, Is That You?” (December 8, 1988) If we told you this episode features George Wendt’s character pretending to be gay, you’d probably imagine that Wendt would go really big with that performance. Most sitcoms would if a straight actor were playing a straight character playing a gay character, but Cheers doesn’t, and in fact this is an episode about gayness where it goes oddly not remarked upon — and not spoken about outright.  Listen to our previous Cheers episodes, Rebecca Howe Suffers From Gay Blindness and Diane Chambers Is an LGBT Ally. Here’s the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette article in which it was conjectured that Cheers might replace Kirstie Alley with Joan Severance, playing Rebecca Howe’s sister. Watch the trailer for Norman… Is That You?, the 1973 Redd Foxx comedy that came out three years after his sitcom referenced the source material in “Lamont, Is That You?” The strangeness that is Pink Lady and Jeff. And yes, Spain remade Cheers. It has a Woody and a Coach existing at the same time. It’s weird. Buy Gayest Episode Ever shirts, totes and more on our TeePublic page. Buy Glen’s movie, Being Frank. M: (Yawn) I don't see the big deal in bowling a perfect game. All you gotta do is beat some pieces of wood with a giant ball a few times. Anyone can do it. W: Jamal, this is your first time bowling, so you wouldn't really know, but bowling is a lot more than just throwing a "giant ball". It takes years of practice, and the techniques necessary to bowl a perfect game can't just be learned over night. (The two of them walk up to the lane.) W: Alright here I go! Perfect game, here I come! (Bowls the ball) M: Oh. You only beat 3 of them. W: It's not BEATING them. It's "knocking them over." And I'm still just getting warmed up. That was just some kind of fluke. Besides, I doubt YOU could do any better. Here's a 15 pounder. Good luck knocking any pins over with that! M: OK. Watch this! (Jamal throws the ball under his legs and it rolls very slowly.) W: Ha ha! Granny-style throw? You're not gonna hit any pins with THAT technique. (Jamal gets a perfect strike.) M: Cool! I beat them all! W: What? A strike? That's impossible! My technique is flawless and you're just some amateur! Alright, this time I'm gonna get a strike for sure. (Sarah throws the ball with all her strength but only manages to knock over 1 pin.) M: So, a strike is when you only beat one of the pins? W: Ah! Last time you got lucky. Let's see if you can go 2 for 2. M: OK, cool. (Jamal throws the ball like a baseball. Despite the form, he manages to get a perfect strike.) M: Hey, I beat them again! This game is too easy. Can we go to the arcade? W: What?! IMPOSSIBLE! I AM the superior bowler! Besides, it's not called "beating the pins" you moron! I'm too good for this. I'm going home! (Written by David Shaner) やさしい英語会話 (266) Endings are not always happy W: Oh, Humberto, this is, honestly, the best date I could've asked for. The food is delicious. The atmosphere and night view are just astonishingly beautiful. And the bouquet of roses… you really know how to get to a woman's heart! M: Well, It's because… I love you, Natsuki. And, I actually have a rather important question to ask you… Natsuki… I… Waiter: Hi folks. I'm your waiter! Is everything going alright? I hope you like the food! If you need any refills, let me know! And if you have any questions or concerns feel free to share them! Oh, and if you don't mind, I'd love for you to fill out this questionnaire! My name is Fred. F-R-E-D, D as in DOG. So if you could, also please write a review on the service that I provide to you guys. M: Ah, everything is going great, Fred, thank you. Waiter: That's great to hear! Call me if you need anything! M: Ugh! Waiters can be so obnoxious here… Anyways, as I was saying… (Alarms start sounding, and everyone starts screaming) M: WHAT?!?! NATSUKI!??! The lights went off! W: I'M… I'M RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU, HUMBERTO!!! WHAT'S GOING ON!?!??! M: I… I DON'T KNOW!! Waiter: SIR! SIR! WE NEED TO GET OUT OF HERE NOW! M: FRED, IS THAT YOU!??!! (Waiter: starts coughing and passes out) Announcement: THIS IS THE CITY FIRE DEPARTMENT. EVERYBODY REMAIN CALM. FOR REASONS UNKOWN, WE WILL BE PUTTING THIS BUILDING ON LOCKDOWN. IF ANYONE TRIES TO ESCAPE, THEY WILL BE ARRESTED. M: What the…?! W: HUMBERTO! I'm scared. M: Uh… I think we just got ourselves into a horror movie. I was going to ask you to marry me, but I don't think that's going to happen. I'm out of here! W: WAIT! HUMBERTO DON'T LEAVE ME!!! (Written by Lauren Johnson) やさしい英語会話 (248) It’s important to be honest during interviews Situation: John is at an interview for a part-time job. W: Alright... how are you, sir? I'm Candice, and I'll be interviewing you today. M: Hi Candice. It's nice to meet you. (Stands to shake her hand, but his hand is visibly drenched in sweat.) W: Oh my! Your hand is a bit sweaty! M: Can I be honest with you, Candice? W: Sure, in fact I'd prefer it. M: I'm a bit nervous about this whole interview thing. W: That's perfectly fine! It's normal for people to be nervous during interviews. It's a part of human nature. M: But this isn't just ordinary interview anxiety. I'm nervous because... um... because I've done some horrible things. Unforgivable things. Things that if you ever found out about them, you probably wouldn't want to give me this job, or even look me in the eye! W: OK, well, now that you've brought it up, I feel inclined to ask you what these "horrible" things are. M: It all started last Wednesday. I was at the local Walgreens, buying some candy. I then decided to buy a birthday card for my mom, and I forgot about the chocolate bar in my hand... I walked out of the store without paying for it! I wanted to go return it, but by the time I noticed I was half-way home! W: Um... Well, that's an interesting story. M: I knew you guys would find out during the lie-detector test so I thought I'd just get it off my chest now. W: Lie-detector test? Um... this is an interview for a position as a janitor at McDonald's. We don't do lie detector tests. In fact, if that's the worst thing you've ever done, you might just be the best employee we've ever had! You're hired! M: Really? You mean it? Yippee! (Written by David Shaner) やさしい英語会話 (147) Scared of bugs M: Hi Lauren! Why do you look so scared? Are you all right? W: Remy, don't move! There's a beetle on your shirt!! M: (Nonchalantly) Oh really…? Where? W: You're not scared?! M: Not really. It's just a bug. They're so small compared to us, so I don't really get scared of them. W: Ugh, I hate bugs! I'm scared of every bug on this planet! M: Every bug? You can't be scared of ants! Ants are harmless! And what about butterflies? Butterflies are beautiful! W: What are you talking about?! Ants bite! And they've got all those little legs? Oh, creepy!! And butterflies start out as nasty, crawling caterpillars? Gross!! M: Wait a minute; one time when I came over to your house there was a pet snake in a tank. Whose was that? If you're scared of bugs I can't believe you'd live with a snake in your house! W: Oh, you mean Marbles? He's my pet garden snake. He's awesome! M: Are you telling me that you're scared of bugs, but you think snakes are OK?! W: Well, yeah! Snakes aren't bugs, now, are they? Snakes have brains, feelings, emotions! M: Sometimes I just don't get you, Lauren… (Written by Hannah Klein)

Most companies view marketing as a competitive sport, and gear their ads, brochures, and websites to convince prospects that they're the best choice in a sea of competitors. Differentiation, innovation, and uniqueness are viewed as the key to marketing and advertising success. And rightfully so. Yet in many cases, your true competitors are actually NOT other companies at all. Instead, the real marketing challenge is to convince prospects that they need what you're selling in the first place… or in the case of window washing, to overcome their pre-conceived objections that are keeping them from buying your product or service from anyone. Look at the window washing flyers below. The first flyer extols all the wonderful advantages of doing business with this particular company instead of their competitors will likely fall on deaf ears. That's because very few people who are looking at a window washing ad (hanging on their front door, in a magazine ad, a letter or postcard in their mailbox, etc.) are even considering hiring a window washer right now. Advantages relative to other competitors are irrelevant. The fact is, very few people have ever said to themselves, "man, we sure got taken advantage of by that last window washing company we used. If only we knew how to choose the right company." Now that might be true for auto repair, remodeling or moving companies… but not for window washing. Ask the owner of a window washing company what percentage of people actually hire window washing companies versus just letting them stay dirty or doing it themselves, and they will tell you it's around 2% to 3%. The more important question then is: why would people NOT hire a window washing company? The main reason (as you might expect), is they think it simply costs a lot of money to have the service performed. So what do you think might happen if these window washing owners actually innovated their business in the area of pricing? How about putting customers on an easy payment plan where the window washer comes out and washes the customer's windows 4 times per year but breaks the payments into 12 easy equal monthly payments? The resulting headline (see second ad below) hits this objection on the head. See how this works so much better? I know it might not sound like a big deal to you, but if you're trying to convince people that you're better than your competitors when they've already decided they don't want to buy from any of you, then you're going to lose. Why do five out of six new businesses fail within the first few years? After working with business owners for the past two years, and on my own businesses over the past 10 years, I can unequivocally say that I know. Nearly every business owner I work with shares three common challenges that limit their growth; ineffective marketing, no sales process, and inadequately trained employees. Small improvements in each of these areas will create exponential growth. You might be thinking….no way, too simple. You would be wrong. I’ll keep this short and start with marketing. Do you ever receive Valpac adds in the mail? How often do you rush in to rip the envelop open and begin calling every single advertiser? Well, I do, because they are all potential clients. But I’ll bet you don’t. I have NEVER seen a Valpac add that truly distinguishes a business from its competitors. Pretty pictures, free estimates, jargon, platitudes, and all the other drearily common tools. Here’s how I evaluate such marketing and how you can evaluate your marketing right now. I use a three-question test to assess a business’s marketing messages. My examples are actual marketing messages from real businesses. The first is what I call The Well I Hope So Test. “We fix it right, the first time!” If I were looking for a plumber and I saw that message I would say, “well I hope so!” I call the second the Who Else Can Say That Test. “We provide a professional paint job that is guaranteed for 10 years.” Any other painter can and does say that. Read, watch, or listen to any advertisement. I seriously doubt that you will find a single ad that another competitor can’t replicate. Finally, there is the Scratch Out Write In Test. Take a piece of ad copy, scratch out the business name, and put another business’s name in its place. I can promise you that nine times out of ten it will work just as poorly for the second business. There is no originality in most of business marketing. The first step in fixing this challenge is to speak to those who need your product or service. I mean clearly, loudly, and frequently speak to their heart’s desire. Would you like a simple example? OK. Here is one. Say, you’re a day care provider and the parents are either single parents or dual working couples. Throughout the day they either miss their child or are concerned about how they are doing. One of our clients added a video camera system throughout their Center. Every parent could open their app and quickly find their child! What would their mailer say? “Hey mom’s and dad’s. Do you wonder how your child is doing in Day Care? At Kids PhD University you can open our app and see them all day, every day. Come take a look and see why our parents never worry about their kids.” Do you think their business grew? The only problem they now have is that there is a growing waiting list. It's time for you to go grab your marketing and use these three questions to evaluate the effectiveness of your marketing. And by effective I mean actually make you money. Create your Market Dominating Position (MDP) and Message. Watch the video below or visit MenOfAbundance.com/MDP to get access to the 2 part video series and downloadable workbooks. 1. Identification (WHO is talking) Ears to Hear Whatever the condition of your hearing, ask God to give you ears that hear, and a heart to respond. We often miss the connection between the circumstances in our life and direction from the Lord simply because we have a preconceived idea of what and how the Lord speaks. “Is That You, Lord?” Remind yourself that knowing God is simple; we often want to make it complex for reasons of control of others or to keep from changing our own beliefs or experiencing the pain that accompanies getting healed. But this is really the sum of hearing: asking, “God, is that You?” We can come up with all kinds of guidelines (which may be helpful), but the bottom line is the answer to that question. Say you hear (in whatever sense) what you believe to be the Lord. You ask, “Is that You, Lord?” You hear, “Yes.” How do you know this is the Lord? There are two voices that speak to the sheep: the butcher and the shepherd. Is the voice you're hearing reflecting the qualities of the Lord, and His unconditionally gracious, loving stance toward you? Is the voice encouraging, accepting, loving, honoring? Or is it condemning, harsh, arrogant or demeaning? Talking to Your Self Being able to distinguish between our own thoughts, thoughts the enemy may speak to us and the thoughts of the Lord is a long-term process that begins with becoming aware of what we are thinking. Most of us are totally unaware of what we are thinking, feeling, or even how we make decisions. So part of the training that God puts us through is for the purpose of bringing these to the surface, so we can objectively evaluate the source. Discerning the Voice of the Lord 1. Identification (WHO is talking) Ears to Hear The first step in hearing the voice of the Lord is recognizing that you are hearing something! This may involve the Lord cleaning out your ears, and perhaps clearing away some wounds and beliefs that are keeping you from hearing clearly. Whatever the condition of your hearing, ask God to give you ears that hear, and a heart to respond. Is the voice you're hearing reflecting the qualities of the Lord, and His unconditionally gracious, loving stance toward you? Is the voice encouraging, accepting, loving, honoring? Or is it condemning, harsh, arrogant or demeaning? I've heard it said that God never yells, so if you hear someone “yelling” at you it's not God. I think God reserves the right to communicate with us however He chooses! But even in that “yelling” there will be a sense of urgency, getting our attention, rather than threat or coercion. It's best to learn to rely on our “inner-knower” to be able to recognize His voice rather than on a set of guidelines.

3. Cultivation If we really want to be able to recognize the Lord's voice, we will have to make lifestyle changes, rearranging our schedule and beliefs to make room for Him first. The more time and attention we give to God, the more fine-tuned our senses become to His leading. Discerning the Voice of the Lord Now that we know the stages in developing our ability to hear, we can look practically at learning how to recognize His voice for ourselves. Spend time with the Lord, both throughout the day and at specific times we've set aside, so you can objectively evaluate what you are sensing, discerning and hearing: 1. Identification (WHO is talking) Ears to Hear The first step in hearing the voice of the Lord is recognizing that you are hearing something! Dani Menkin (http://imdb.to/2nXMH3m) is an Israeli Academy Award Winning filmmaker for "39 Pounds of Love"(2005). The film, written, produced and directed by him, has been sold to HBO, and was short listed for the Oscars. Some of his films include: "Is That You?" (winner of "Best Indie Film of the Year" award), "Dolphin Boy" (2011), "Je T'aime - I Love You Terminal"(2010), and his most recent film "On the Map." Dani is also a co-producer and a creator-partner of Ilan Heitner for the Israeli cult indie film "Wisdom of the Pretzel", which is one of the most successful independent feature films in Israeli cinema. In 2005 Director, writer and producer Dani Menkin created his own Independent film production "Hey Jude Productions". In this TAMP episode, Dani talks with Smarthouse Creative's Ryan Davis about what he believes is his most important role as a director, how "On The Map" has appealed to audiences not only in the sports world, but from many different communities outside of competitive sports, and the inspiration behind his filmmaking process. He says one of the biggest lessons he has learned is that it's important as a filmmaker not to "take any moment or any second in making films for granted." "On The Map" will be screening at The Jewish Film Festival in Seattle on APril 2nd! You can check out Dani's Facebook page here, http://bit.ly/2mOrWa8, and follow him on Twitter at, @danimenkin. This week we continue our Women in Film series with part 3: "What role do women play in their own hindrance or advancement in the business?"I honestly believe this is one of the most important episodes I ever have, or will, publish. I strongly feel this episode should be heard by everyone woman in the industry. Heck, I think it would be great for women in any profession to hear from the various guests on the show today. We have a full slate of women at the top of their game in their respective fields.First, we bring back my 4-person panel in Seattle: Scilla Andreen (CEO of IndieFlix), Stefanie Malone (executive director of NFFTY), Ryan Davis (co-founder of Smarthouse Creative) and Nancy Chang (executive director of ReelGrrls). I also speak to Nichelle Protho, VP of the television and online video production company Sander/Moses; Lauren Haroutunian, dean of Freddie Wong's Rocket Jump Film School; and the director of the interactive documentary "Hollow," and co-host of the She Does Podcast, Elaine McMillion Sheldon. We also hear from Universal Pictures Chairman Donna Langley and 20th Century Fox co-chairman Stacey Snider, in excerpts from Hollywood Reporter's studio executive roundtable; and Sheryl Sandberg in a clip from the TED Radio Hour has some poignant commentary as well.Oh, and I contribute a few halfway-decent comments now and then too. :)Support our SponsorWe're supported in part by Song Freedom.
