~ Let's get politicaaal ~In a slight variation from usual themes, we zoom out to discuss... well, it's a big topic, but pretty much: politicians don't care about us, anyone with the power to create change is motivated by money, and We The People are encouraged to ignore it. To the point that it's terrible for our mental health when we DO see what's wrong but feel powerless to fix it.Loosely a recap of the Adam Curtis 2016 documentary called "Hypernormalisation", which is free to watch here: https://youtu.be/Gr7T07WfIhMSource list: https://bit.ly/43dijsTPatreon ~ patreon.com/sadgapMerch ~ sadgap-podcast.com/merch ig: @sadgap.podcast / @misandristmemes / @txgothgf / music producer @iamjonnibrooks.eth

Language Failure: How Words Shape Our RealityA Long-Form Summary of the PodcastOpening Hook: The Illusion of RealityImagine walking through downtown San Francisco. On your phone, you see pristine streets and a bustling city. But when you look up, the reality is starkly different—crumbling infrastructure, vacant storefronts, and widespread urban decay. This isn't an episode of Black Mirror; it's what happened in 2023 when San Francisco created a Potemkin village—a facade meant to impress foreign dignitaries while hiding the city's deeper issues. This phenomenon isn't just about urban aesthetics; it signals something deeper: the failure of language to accurately reflect reality. When we manipulate language, we manipulate perception, and when perception detaches from truth, society begins to collapse. The San Francisco example proves that we know what a functional city looks like—we can manufacture an illusion of order when necessary—but we don't maintain it. Instead, we mask the problem rather than solving it. This mirrors the broader theme of the podcast: language, like infrastructure, is breaking down, and instead of repairing it, we disguise its failure with illusions. The Problem: The Breakdown of RealityWhat happens when our words and perceptions no longer match reality? We see this in:Infrastructure decay: Baltimore's bridge collapse, failing subway systems, and deteriorating roads.Media and distraction: Instead of addressing problems, we divert our attention—scrolling through TikTok instead of engaging with real-world issues.Social and political discourse: Headlines inflame emotions, but we rarely engage with the underlying facts. We live in a loop of anxiety and escape, toggling between existential threats and dopamine-fueled distractions. This is not just modern life—it's a historical pattern that has preceded societal collapse before.Historical Warning Signs: Orwell, Cuenco, and the Soviet UnionMost people remember 1984 for its themes of surveillance and thought control. But Orwell also illustrated a world where physical reality itself was decaying—the elevators don't work, the food rations shrink, and yet, the Party insists everything is improving.Michael Cuenco builds on this idea in his 2021 essay, Victory Is Not Possible, arguing that today's culture wars function in the same way as Orwell's language control. The ruling elite isn't just lying—it's actively shrinking language, making dissent impossible because people lack the vocabulary to express opposition. The Soviet Union offers another chilling parallel. Adam Curtis's documentary, HyperNormalisation, explores how, in the USSR's final years, everyone knew the official narrative was false—record-breaking harvests were announced while store shelves were empty. But rather than resist, people played along, creating a world where fantasy replaced reality. The result? A world where illusions become more real than facts. People, exhausted by the gap between truth and propaganda, retreated into cynicism, vodka, and pop culture.Today, we are experiencing a similar detachment from reality—not through authoritarian control, but through semantic drift, emotional manipulation, and digital distractions. The Mechanism: How Language Becomes UntetheredHow does language lose its connection to reality? Through concept creep and false logic.Concept Creep (Semantic Drift)Words broaden in meaning, diluting their original precision.Example: Trauma once meant a physical wound (1850s), but by 1895, William James and Freud extended it to psychological wounds. Today, it describes any discomfort—I was traumatized by cold coffee.Hyperbole and Semantic InflationOveruse weakens terms: Abuse now includes neglect, fascism is applied to trivial disagreements, bullying can refer to mere criticism.Example: Courage once meant facing real danger, but now can mean avoiding offense.Semantic InversionWords flip in meaning—what was once good can become bad and vice versa.Example: Freedom increasingly means freedom from reality and consequences rather than actual agency. When words become unanchored from objective meaning, they create ideological vacuums—leaving us drifting like astronauts in space, weightless, disconnected, and incapable of grappling with reality. The Ladder of False Logic: How We Convince Ourselves of LiesThe Ladder of Inference, or false logic, explains how we trick ourselves into believing distorted realities:Observable Facts – A politician says, Education is declining despite higher spending.Selected Data – You focus on a single phrase that confirms your bias.Interpretation – This sounds like something a dictator would say.Assumption – They must have a hidden agenda. Conclusion – They're trying to destroy public education.Belief – They are evil and must be stopped.Action – Post an outraged rant online, comparing them to Hitler. Each step takes you further from reality—until your worldview becomes purely ideological, detached from objective facts. At this point, we are radicals—not because of some external manipulation, but because we self-radicalized through unchecked emotional reasoning. The Philosophical Root: Kant's Detachment from RealityMatthew Crawford critiques Immanuel Kant, arguing that his philosophy set the stage for modern detachment from reality.Kant suggested true freedom means acting according to self-imposed rational laws, independent of external influences. This led to a view of reality as subjective—where internal logic overrides external truth.Instead of grounding ourselves in the real world, we live in a mental space station, floating free but becoming increasingly weak and incapable of dealing with reality.Astronauts in zero gravity may enjoy their detachment, but their bones and muscles deteriorate. Likewise, the more detached we are from reality, the weaker our ability to engage with it becomes.Contemporary Crisis: The Illusion EconomyModern financial markets and politics operate not on productivity or value, but on perception and emotion.Stocks rise and fall based on optimism, not output.Presidential campaigns are waged on vibes, not policy.Social movements focus on interpretations rather than material outcomes. In San Francisco, the government hid homelessness rather than solving it. This is how language manipulation replaces action. When words detach from material reality, truth becomes contingent, and society drifts into ideological orbit. The Challenge of Re-Entry: Reclaiming RealityHow do we return from orbit and reconnect words with truth?Verify personally – Base beliefs on direct observation, not media narratives.Reality-check assumptions – Climb down the ladder of inference before reacting.Resist semantic drift – Demand precision in language.Closing: The Fight for TruthWe are at a turning point. We can either continue floating in ideological orbit, or we can re-enter reality.Re-entry is painful. It requires effort, humility, and engagement with the material world—but it's necessary. In the next episode, we'll explore specific tools for resisting semantic drift and maintaining a clear connection to reality.Until then, stay grounded.

Nur was? (It also inspired the Adam Curtis docuseries by the same name).  The term describes the final years of the Soviet Union when the system was failing, everyone knew the system was rotted from within by greed and corruption, yet people carried on, the broken system becoming the new normal. When our government can easily be shutdown by a Kremlin-backed, proudly fascist party, while its leader continues to call for violence, walking free after having tried to violently overthrow our government, and disinformation echo chambers on the far-right and far-left openly mock and attack the victims and targets of that fascism, America has reached HyperNormalisation. And the priority of the business elite is to protect their immorally low-tax rate and hoard their wealth, following in the footsteps of those who helped bring Hitler and Pinochet to power.  Elon Musk's X has become the biggest outlet of Russian disinformation, according to the EU. That's “mission accomplished” for the American far-right and its Russian backers. Formerly reliable so-called “resistance” accounts on Twitter that once led the way combating Trump and Putin have succumbed to self-censorship and catering to Musk's oppressive algorithms like they're an authoritarian regime. This causes them to fall silent on ringing the alarm on the stakes to all of us for stopping Russia's genocide in Ukraine, LGBTQ+ rights that are being scapegoated through genocidal rhetoric, and more. You know things are bad when even Ralph Nader is ringing the alarm of fascism and wants to campaign for the Democrats!  Since the beginning of the show, the focus has been on grassroots power–the most reliable power we have left. Together, we made 15,000 phone calls to get John Fetterman into the Senate, and he's leading the way against corruption and greed. But what you find when you look at the 400-year history of immigrant New York is that every generation of immigrants comes to New York for the same reasons, has the same experiences, is hated by the people who are already in New York, and yet always they end up succeeding. And so every group is despised for a time, but every group ends up becoming an accepted New Yorker. VYS0020 | Messages of Deception - Vayse to Face with Mark Pilkington - Show Notes If you don't know Mark Pilkington by name, chances are you will be familiar with some of his work: he's the author of the seminal history of deception and misinformation throughout the history of the UFO phenomenon, Mirage Men, and producer of the documentary of the same name, he runs Strange Attractor Press, the diverse, beloved and well respected counterculture publisher, he's a journalist, having written for the Fortean Times, the Guardian and Bizarre Magazine amongst others, and he also records and performs music with Teleplamsiste, Luminous Foundation and the Begotten. In this episode Hine and Buckley chat to Mark about the legacy of Mirage Men, which is having a moment again with the tenth anniversary of the documentary falling this year, the recent release of the audiobook and continued favourable nods in the occultosphere and beyond. The conversation also takes turns into the way misinformation is now a pervasive part of our everyday lives, Mark's ideas about the nature of the phenomenon itself and his experiences as a crop circle hoaxer... recorded 7 March 2023 Mark Pilkington Links Mark Pilkington on Twitter (https://twitter.com/markopilkington?s=21&t=q2-c9hjD5sIXynDdaJB8PQ) Strange Attractor Press (http://strangeattractor.co.uk/) Mirage Men (https://uk.bookshop.org/p/books/mirage-men-a-journey-into-disinformation-paranoia-and-ufos-mark-pilkington/2148784?ean=9781845298579) by Mark Pilkington Mirage Men Audiobook (https://www.audible.co.uk/pd/Mirage-Men-Audiobook/1405549556?ipRedirectOverride=true&overrideBaseCountry=true&bp_o=true&source_code=M2M30DFT1Bk13010142102TD&gclid=CjwKCAjw0ZiiBhBKEiwA4PT9z66tMeWzeo6Ssu-yqAzST0IYPMPRoZlsodiZxbkIIX60WGah3c4xgBoCkq8QAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds) Mirage Men DVD (http://strangeattractor.co.uk/shoppe/mirage-men-dvd/) Mirage Men on Vimeo (https://vimeo.com/ondemand/miragemen) Mirage Men Blog (https://miragemen.wordpress.com/) Frequency is the New Ecstasy (https://teleplasmiste.bandcamp.com/album/frequency-is-the-new-ecstasy) by Teleplasmiste (https://teleplasmiste.bandcamp.com/album/science-religion) Other Links The Austin Osman Spare Tarot Deck (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/strangeattractoruk/austin-osman-spare-occult-tarot-deck-and-book) High Weirdness (http://strangeattractor.co.uk/shoppe/high-weirdness/) by Erik Davis Purgatory (http://strangeattractor.co.uk/shoppe/purgatory/) by Ken Hollings North (http://strangeattractor.co.uk/shoppe/north/) by Gyrus The Pepsi-Cola Addict (http://strangeattractor.co.uk/shoppe/the-pepsi-cola-addict/) by June-Alison Gibbons David Tibet (https://www.davidtibet.com/) Current 93 (https://current931.bandcamp.com/) Jamie Sutcliffe (https://linktr.ee/jamierobertsutcliffe) An Overview of Project Serpo (https://nostradamus.fandom.com/wiki/Project_Serpo) The Haunted Objects Podcast (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLU4VP9oB7c9iKhby8HdRbwP0dF8O9eGt2) Parcast Unexplained Mysteries - UFOs and the Mirage Men pt.1 (https://open.spotify.com/episode/4heJWlPvOMTzGFKTyd2YGv?si=3f67b2e0848e48bf) Parcast Unexplained Mysteries - UFOs and the Mirage Men pt.2 (https://open.spotify.com/episode/3J3QTUh16JBmu0AWaFpOuy?si=093bcf5cc85e4a2c) HyperNormalisation (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=thLgkQBFTPw) by Adam Curtis Wikipedia entry for John Lundberg (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Lundberg) Laughlin UFO Mega Conference (https://www.facebook.com/events/141005227976051/) on Facebook IMDB entry for Richard Doty (https://www.imdb.com/name/nm3288913/) Wikipedia entry for Paul Bennewitz (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Bennewitz) Wikipedia Entry for the Roswell Incident (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roswell_incident) Wikipedia Entry for George Adamski (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Adamski) BBC News Article about the U-2 Bomber and Area 51 (https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-23731759) History Channel Article on Black Triangle UFOs (https://www.history.com/news/black-triangle-ufos-facts) Wikipedia Article on Radar Spoofing (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radar_jamming_and_deception) Popular Science Article - The stealth helicopters used in the 2011 raid on Osama Bin Laden are still cloaked in mystery (https://www.popsci.com/story/technology/osama-bin-laden-raid-anniversary-stealth-helicopters/) Wikipedia Article on Cattle Mutilation (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cattle_mutilation) Close Encounters of the Third Kind Trailer (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dSpQ3G08k48) Wikipedia Article on the Famous Five (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Famous_Five) War of the Worlds (https://uk.bookshop.org/p/books/the-war-of-the-worlds-h-g-wells/92913?ean=9780008590178)by HG Wells Dracula (https://uk.bookshop.org/p/books/dracula-bram-stoker/169855?ean=9780393871555) by Bram Stoker Usborne Guide to the Supernatural World (https://www.abebooks.co.uk/9780860202929/Supernatural-World-Mysterious-Powers-Strange-0860202925/plp)by E Maple - a steal at £300 Forbidden Planet (https://forbiddenplanet.com/) Fortean Times (https://subscribe.forteantimes.com/) Magonia Journal (https://www.encyclopedia.com/science/encyclopedias-almanacs-transcripts-and-maps/magonia-journal) Bizarre Magazine on Twitter (https://twitter.com/bizarremagazine?lang=en) Mark's Far Out Column for the Guardian (https://www.theguardian.com/science/series/farout) Wikipedia entry on Norman Tebbit (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norman_Tebbit) Wikipedia entry on David Icke (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Icke) Circle Makers Website (http://www.circlemakers.org/) Wikipedia entry on Mandelbrot Fractals (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mandelbrot_set) Wikipedia Article on Discordianism (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Discordianism#:~:text=Discordianism%20is%20centered%20on%20the,objectively%20true%20than%20the%20other.) Today on The Russians, Evgenia and I talk to Alexei Yurchak about his work on Lenin and the history and politics of the ongoing preservation of Lenin’s body and the secretive lab that carries out the job. He is currently finishing a book about the topic, which he expects to be out in time for the 100-year anniversary of Lenin’s embalmment. Alexei is a professor of anthropology at UC Berkeley. He is probably best known for coining the term “hypernormalization” — a concept that Adam Curtis built a whole documentary around a few years ago and even called the film “HyperNormalisation.”A couple of notes.Alexei Yurchak’s book on Lenin’s body is not out yet, but you can get a preview by reading a paper he published on the topic a few years ago: “Bodies of Lenin: The Hidden Science of Communist Sovereignty.”Towards the end of the episode, we discuss Sergey Kuryokhin’s infamous 1991 stunt on Leningrad TV about Lenin being a mushroom. Here is the paper Alexei referenced: “A Parasite From Outer Space: How Sergei Kurekhin proved that Lenin was a mushroom.”Alexei mentioned a book on Lenin he liked. Here it is: Lenin's Last Struggle. There’s also another book rec he gave, one about parasites. And of course he’s a link to Alexei’s book — Everything Was Forever, Until It Was No More.—Yasha Levine Want to know more? Jeremy gives us his views on the ‘hypernormal' economic world we are living in today; taken from the Adam Curtis documentary, ‘HyperNormalisation'. (https://youtu.be/AUiqaFIONPQ). Jeremy speaks like an economic historian, drawing from different eras of different economic policies. We discuss QE and monetary policy, which he feels has neutered the banking industry. With inflation, he draws analogies with the 40s and 50s rather than the 70s. Jeremy gives his view where he's investing his own money, accepting investors are being asked to take more risk to see a return on their savings. He favours equities, especially compounders with good free cash flow. Google is the largest position in his portfolio. However, he believes all portfolios deserve some real asset exposure, he holds single Scotch Malt Whiskey and bitcoin! We discuss today's innovators, where he cites of course Google, but at the smaller end, Aquis Exchange #AQX. We close on his views of 'value' versus 'growth' investing. Bubbling with brilliance, educational and entertaining. 00:51 Jeremy's background 05:24 QE & monetary policy 13:30 Inflation 20:15 Where should one invest today? 24:43 What are your stock selection criteria? 28:30 Where are you seeing innovation in companies and sectors today? 32:47 Process innovation: Aquis Exchange #AQX 35:03 The role of the bank or broker's effect on the cost of capital for a company and their market value 40.25 Owner managed businesses 43:57 Today, are you a value or growth investor? 52:15 About Jeremy's podcast: In the company of Mavericks 55:09 Where to find Jeremy Jeremy on Linkedin: www.linkedin.com/in/jeremy-mckeown-33b962a/ Jeremy's websites: www.hypernormaltimes.com www.inthecompanyofmavericks.com Dowgate wealth: https://dowgatewealth.co.uk/our-team/jeremy-mckeown/ About Jeremy: Jeremy has worked in the UK equity market for four decades, he has met and interacted with all types of investors. He has met countless companies and read widely on different investment topics. He has invested in a variety of companies and implemented differing strategies, sometimes successfully, other times disastrously. He is now looking to use his experience, knowledge and world view to make better decisions about his own investments. He would also like to help other investors and companies to make better decisions about the world we inhabit, to learn and disseminate new ideas, avoid unnecessary risk and hopefully to help keep a positive perspective on what at times appears to be a chaotic and dysfunctional place.

Hypernormalisation, a term coined during the final days of the U.S.S.R., is explained as when politicians, corporations, and those in power give up on the complexities of the real world and create a simpler "fake world" through delivering a false narrative. This false narrative is created by corporations and institutions and delivered to the masses by politicians via institutional media systems. We know they are lying, they know we know they are lying, but nobody can do anything about it and there doesn't seem to be any alternative. But, there is an alternative. There's a third door. Tune in with Aja, Ryan, & Elliot as they discuss how hypernormalisation presents itself today, from GameStop to the impeachment trial to the ongoing debates of COVID-19 relief in the U.S., and come to the conclusion that there's another way to go about this than just "going along with it."To support our work, visit mainlinezine.com/donate

Antony Rotunno joins us again for the second part of our wide-ranging conversation on the 2016 BBC documentary HyperNormalisation by Adam Curtis. Borrowing the word "hypernormalisation" from a book by ex-Soviet citizen Alexei Yurchak, in whose writing it described an officially-encouraged delusional state of mind in the gradually-collapsing Soviet Union, Adam Curtis creatively applies the term to the West since the last quarter of the 20th Century; a time in which, he argues, both politicians and citizens have "retreated" from hard problems in favour of "fake" versions of reality, while the banking and technological elites have continued to fill the vacuum with their technocratic systems of "stability" and "control". While we remain unpersuaded by elements of Curtis's overall narrative and gently critical of his somewhat pretentious style, we nevertheless find the documentary rich with fascinating subjects, and share our own perspectives in a relaxed and fairly unstructured way. In 2 hours and 40 minutes, it charts the globe-hopping travails of terrorists, bankers, politicians and America's digital aristocracy--all of whom use humanity as pawns by promising simple stories to explain complex problems which can't be solved with “perception management” and pastel fairy-tales about “good vs. evil.” Considered by many to be the most talented and remarkable documentarian in Britain, Adam Curtis has weaved suspicion and suspense into a BBC career that stretches from 40 Minutes: Bombay Motel in 1987 (which explores the have and have-nots of the city) to his most recent film HyperNormalisation in 2016 (which explores how an entirely Russian condition has now passed into the wider-world). Curtis' documentary was released less than a month prior to the mind-gagging upset of Hillary Clinton's loss to Donald Trump, and the film increasingly speaks to a disenchanted, rat-fucked future of no-returns. Jesse & Matt will discuss what makes this “dank” film so compelling and deeply-felt, as well as what makes it, almost equally so, such an evasive work of art. This is a figural process presently best observed in a whole mode of contemporary entertainment literature -- one is tempted to characterize it as "high-tech paranoia" -- in which the circuits and networks of some putative global computer hookup are narratively mobilized by labyrinthine conspiracies of autonomous but deadly interlocking and competing information agencies in a complexity often beyond the capacity of the normal reading mind. Yet conspiracy theory (and its garish narrative manifestations) must be seen as a degraded attempt -- through the figuration of advanced technology -- to think the impossible totality of the contemporary world system. It is in terms of that enormous and threatening, yet only dimly perceivable, other reality of economic and social institutions that, in my opinion, the postmodern sublime can alone be theorized. Drag yourself out of bed on a Sunday morning listening to ill-informed patter from Rodders and Harv. This week, we relive Louis CK's famous accusation that Donald Rumsfeld that he is a lizard, accuse James Corbett of ripping off our podcast (later admitting freely that it was, indeed, the exact opposite), then try to recover by talking about the ways in which we implement counter economics in our daily lives. But it's mostly being wrong about James Corbett. Sorry man, you're our guru. This podcast we recorded in two parts, due to technical (user) failure. If there are any weird inconsistencies, that's probably why. I struggle with where to start stories. I heard Dan Carlin, one of the godfathers of podcasting, I heard him say on his last episode of Hardcore History that he’s addicted to context. He has stories he wants to tell and once he gets into them, the story changes so much that his original idea for one show on one topic turns into a six-part series on something else entirely. That’s how I feel about what I’m going to share with you right now. I’ve rewritten this several times, and each time it just got further and further away from me, to the point where I didn’t understand what I was even trying to communicate. So I’m just going back to basics, simplifying this for myself and for you. Honestly, you would have heard me rant for 45 minutes and go on tangent after tangent and try to tie a bunch of disparate points into one coherent message. But that wasn’t working for me, which means there’s no way it would have worked for you. Instead, I’m just gonna strip all that away - including the Reddit thread that initially inspired me to record this - but I’m gonna strip all that away and just be real. In episode 29, I spoke with Dan Willis. The first hour of that conversation Dan talked at length and in great detail about some of the hidden history of extraterrestrial contact with humanity and the process of disclosing that to the general public. But, when I contacted Dan about coming on the show, I didn’t mention this topic at all. I was much more interested in his work with Dr. Marcel Vogel on quartz crystals and the sacred geometry of water and how to structure it. Obviously Dan’s background beyond that is compelling, and if you heard that episode, you know why. He’s an ex-Navy guy whose professional travels have taken him many different places, including to Washington DC, where he testified in front of the National Press Club about what’s most commonly referred to as ETI, or extraterrestrial intelligence. He talked about human contact with ETI, deals cut between governments and ETI, technology embargoes with ETI, and so on. Honestly, I wasn’t expecting to talk about that in such great detail. I hadn’t prepared to talk about it. As I said, I was more interested in the other topics that we talked about in the second hour. Frankly, the disclosure topic doesn’t interest me much. It’s not because I don’t see any truth in the stories. I’m sure there’s something there. Where there’s smoke, there’s usually fire, right? My issue with this is the large group of people pushing for it, pushing for the truth to finally come out. But that group is pushing for this truth from a gang of corrupt authority figures. The people fighting for disclosure are fighting against an entity that has done nothing but hide, cloak, lie and kill to keep secrets. The more I think about disclosure, the more I think it’s just a matter of telling people what they want to hear, not necessarily what’s actually going on. It seems more like they’v spent all this time building up the fervor, creating another false reality beyond the veil, so that when the time came to “lift the veil”, when people started clamoring for some appeasement beyond this superficial bullshit we’ve all come to hate, that they’d have an answer for us. Honestly, it seems like just another distraction. It’s just another false construct being built for you, instead of being built by you. That’s the heart of the issue for me. It’s more hive-mind groupthink. It’s more humans externalizing their search for truth instead of internalizing it. The further out you go to search for truth, the further away from it you actually are. That’s why I got rid of everything I had initially written and rewritten. I had 15 pages of me tumbling down a rabbit hole that started with disclosure, then somehow got onto coronal mass ejections and reptilians and the whole Corey Goode stuff, and then I just got lost in it. The whole thing made no fucking sense. It was me trying to externalize. I was trying to turn chaos into order, and that never works. Those of you familiar with the occult know that answers are rarely found outside. They’re rarely given to you by others. You seek within, and you find within. The universe, the uni-verse, your one verse, is a reflection of you, of your truth within, whatever it may be. We need to stop assuming the external and the others that populate it are going to give us any sort of truth. Because others are only giving you their truth. The trick is to not let someone else’s truth become yours. Because then they can wield power over you. That’s the trap we’ve fallen into again and again as individuals and as a species. I heard Walter Bosley say recently that paranormal phenomena knows your motives. It knows what you want to see. He said, “If you wanna go out and have the Close Encounters of the Third Kind, or the ET experience, you can go out and it will give you that. Of course that might not be what’s really going on.” What is the “it” he’s talking about? Is it this aetheric energy that can literally manifest anything we desire? I don’t know, and I don’t want to pretend like I do. Who does know what’s really going on? No one does. We’re all trying to explain something that’s unexplainable. Which, again, is our fatal flaw as individuals and as a species. Each of us is trying to make order out of chaos. Instead of embracing the random, we settle for tidy, convenient, comfortable little reality bubbles that make too much sense. You ever met someone who’s too nice and it actually bothers the shit out of you? That’s what this is. It’s too nice, too comfortable - which means there’s something wrong with it. Honestly, the universe, our individual uni-verse, our one verse, it’s completely random. There is no single explanation, interpretation or understanding of it that is correct or accurate. It’s chaotic and therefore cannot be made sense of. Anyone that says something is one specific way is a charlatan. Physicist or priest, parishioner or podcast host, I don’t care - charlatans, all of them. There is no such thing as objectivity; there is only subjectivity. The observer effect. No one can avoid it. As a group, we have forgotten this. As a group, we have forgotten this because we have lost touch with our subjectivity, with our individuality. We have herd mentalities, that groupthink, those hive minds I mentioned earlier. We have allowed our Selves - our (space) Selves, capital S - to be swindled. Our psyches have been manipulated, our senses raped, our spirits pillaged. We have allowed the chaotic nature of our (space) Self, we have allowed that real chaos inside us, to be siphoned off and used against us, to construct this fake order outside. You remember the quote, right? Order from chaos, or out of chaos comes order. That’s exactly what we’ve allowed to happen. We allowed our individuality to be stripped away from us. Our individual sovereignty dissipated because it was easier on these mortal vessels. The chaos we all have inside of us was plundered and replaced by order, a new world order, constructed for you, not by you. They - whoever they are - built their order out of your chaos. Order is easier to control. Order is easier to explain, to interpret, to understand. Order is what ego feeds on. It’s what ego craves. Order is governed by the almighty dollar. Order is your shitty 9-to-5 job; all the bills you have to pay; all the rules, regulations, restrictions, and laws you’re forced to live under; all the incessant celebrity gossip, rigged sporting events, and mass media theatrics you subject yourself to. Order is genetically-modified bread and geopolitical circuses. But that order is breaking down. Finally! Finally, we’re getting back to that chaos. We’re reclaiming our sovereignty, our psyche, our senses, our spirit! Yes! Yes! Finally! We’re awakening! Ascending! Our collective consciousness is rising! Or is it? See, this is where we have to be careful. This is where our discernment is going to be tested. We really have to let our hearts guide us here. Because maybe, just maybe, these ideas of collective consciousness and spiritual awakening and ascension, maybe this is the new order. Maybe this is the new world order that’s being constructed for us, instead of by us. Maybe the foundation for this order has been laid in the last several decades, and now the rest of it is being constructed, brick by brick, hashtag by hashtag, woke hipster by woke hipster. This leads me to a theory, to an idea, known as hypernormalisation. This was an idea first presented in a 2006 book by Alexei Yurchak, titled “Everything Was Forever, Until It Was No More: The Last Soviet Generation”. Here’s a quick synopsis of the book, from Wikipedia: “(The book) is about the paradoxes of life in the Soviet Union during the 20 years before it collapsed. A professor of anthropology at the University of California, Berkeley, (Yurchak) argues that everyone knew the system (in the Soviet Union) was failing, but as no one could imagine any alternative to the status quo, politicians and citizens were resigned to maintaining a pretence of a functioning society. Over time, this delusion became a self-fulfilling prophecy and the ‘fakeness’ was accepted by everyone as real, an effect that Yurchak termed ‘hypernormalisation.’” As I said, this book was published in 2006, but I wasn’t aware of it until about three months ago. I had stumbled across a documentary released late last year by the British Broadcasting Corporation called “HyperNormalisation”. This was directed by a British filmmaker named Adam Curtis, who’s a rather respected filmmaker. He’s won four BAFTAs, which is the British equivalent to the Emmys. (I’ll link to this doc on YouTube in the show notes. I’d encourage you all to watch it, although it is about three hours.) The point of the film is simple, though: since the 1970s, governments, financiers, and technological utopians have given up on the complex "real world" and built a simple "fake world" that is run by corporations and kept stable by politicians. Now, I discern this as an idea likely to be true. I say likely to be true because I’m reminded of the theory that Robert Anton Wilson put forth that states the only thing that exists is probability. So in this case, I find the probability of hypernormalisation being true to be higher than the probability of it being false. (I could also get really meta and say I find the probability of Wilson’s theory of probability being true to be higher than the probability of it being false. But I digress.) This begs some important questions: If hypernormalisation is probable, what exactly is the fake world and what exactly is the real world? Where does the fake end and the real begin? The fake world seems rather easy to parse through. It’s the one we’ve all been actively participating in, the one built on materialism and governed by the almighty dollar. It’s the genetically-modified bread and geopolitical circuses. But what if this fake world also extends to what we consider to be real? By we, I mean people into the fringe, into the occult and the paranormal, conspiracy theories, spirituality, mythology, alternate cosmologies, etc. What if this paranormal portion of the fake world has also been constructed for us and we’re getting ready to walk right into it? As Bosley said, paranormal phenomena knows your motives and knows what you want to see. And if the people who know this about the phenomena - and TPTB know about this, believe me - they’re doing all they can to influence you into wanting certain things, things that appear to be what we want, but things that ultimately keep order in place. Hey, if more and more people want corrupt leaders exposed, or extraterrestrial disclosure, guess what we’re gonna get? If you want to live in a world with 120 different alien species, here ya go. Here’s your draco reptilians and your greys and your blue avians. Ladies and gentleman, the deep state may have constructed an even deeper state for us to get lost in. We’re gonna get that flavor of bread, and we’re gonna get those types of circuses. I guess all I’m saying is: be careful. Be careful with whom you’ve been cohabitating with, or co-creating with. You may feel as if your juju is on point, but unless you’ve mastered your Self and don’t need a co-creator, you’re still very much under the influence of their order. Yes, this is a pivotal moment in our collective existence, but we have to remember that this in an individual journey. One of my favorite movies is The Wizard of Oz. And 78 years after its release, it’s as relevant now as it’s ever been. We all want the man behind the curtain to reveal himself to us. But if The Wizard of Oz taught us anything, it’s that the answers we seek are already here. Remember that line when Dorothy and the gang stroll into meet the wizard and the curtain gets pulled back? “Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain.” You know why? Because he’s a charlatan. An illusion. A reflection of your creative capabilities. Seriously. Pay him no mind. Your character is already courageous. Your mind is already sharp. Your heart is already pure. But it’s time to reclaim your spirit. It’s time to reclaim your chaos.

It was made by the BBC with a shoestring budget of less than £30K and now has become the documentary of our times. Adam Curtis' beguiling and persuasive Hypernormalisation is a warning of how our social yearning for a more reassuring and simplistic view of the world has helped myopic politicians, dictators and elite money-makers in creating a parallel reality of media and political manipulation where they know we know they are lying to us. It is a State run, a corporative and financially sponsored lie that has served not only as a preamble of our current fake news situation but also of the parade of inept populists who seem to be running the destiny of billions of people. So time to get real and listen to Andre López Turner and Juan Toledo.

In Adam Curtis’s acclaimed BBC documentary, HyperNormalisation, he employs masterfully edited found footage to investigate how, at a time of confusing and inexplicable world events, politicians and other power brokers construct new, slippery realities. Curtis tells a story that begins in 1975 in New York and Damascus, and ends with today’s world. Adam Curtis on his work and HyperNormalisation: ”Those in power in society – the politicians, the journalists, the experts – maintain their power by telling us stories about the world. Those stories tell us what is true and what is false, what is right and wrong, and what is real – and what is illusion. But there come times when these stories begin to break down. And people start to distrust those in power – and their definition of what is real and what is fake. At that point you enter the Zone. The film Hypernormalisation tells the story of how we got to this place. It is also about the new systems of power that we cannot see – because we are trapped inside the Zone.” Adam Curtis is an award-winning widely influential documentary filmmaker and journalist. He works for BBC television in London. His acclaimed films include The Century of the Self (2002), The Power of Nightmares (2004), All Watched Over by Machines of Loving Grace (2011), Bitter Lake (2015) – and most recently HyperNormalisation.. His films go back into the recent past to tell dramatic stories that lead the viewer to look again at the present day – and help them make sense of it. They try to show how power really flows in today’s complex society, not just through politics – but through science, public relations and advertising, psychology, computer networks and finance. Curtis has also done live shows with the immersive theatre group Punchdrunk and the band Massive Attack. His films have been shown at the Cannes film festival and have won awards – including 6 BAFTAs. Curtis joins us to talk about power, journalism, the world as is understood today and his work. Episode twenty-one! The podcast comes of age everywhere, just in time for the world to basically collapse. Alastair matches the mood with Hypernormalisation, a new documentary from Adam Curtis, while Nick is escaping into a surreal superhero dream with Grant Morrison and Richard Case's Doom Patrol run. Forcing ourselves into the present day, we take on Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them (6:45), a new film set in the past of the Harry Potter universe. To help us get to grips with this, we bring in blogger, booktuber and Potter-lover Claire Rousseau, last seen discussing Harry Potter And The Cursed Child with us in MFV #13. This leads to some continuity deep dives and, yes, EXTREME SPOILERS for the film, right from the get-go. If you enjoy Claire's appearance here, you can get more from her at ClaireRousseau.com, @ClaireRousseau on Twitter, or you can find her booktube channel by searching her name on YouTube. We've also got a chat about Train To Busan (50:47), a Korean zombie film aiming to change the way we all see train travel, and, on Nick's recommendation, we look at Chew (62:59), the recently-concluded hit comic about food and flesh-eating, by John Layman and Rob Guillory.
