In her poetry anthology "Roots in Water", Kathy Johnson captured the simple moments in life that matter the most: the love and passion for what we do. "The only thing you take with you at the end of your life is your love, not your bank notes, not your honors, not your book," she said in the For the Love of Books Podcast episode hosted by author Emma Palova. As a Chaplain for the local hospice in the Copper Country of the Upper Peninsula, Johnson has met her final inspiration. "The saddest people are those who have given up on various things in life. I've come away from death more alive to human beings, the world, and self-worth." A stanza from Kathy Johnson's poem "Ceremony" shows the poet's passion for life. As the seasons turn One to the next, so we travel From East to West. We rise and flow with the years. Sponsored by Moravian Sons Distillery and Doc Chavent. The year: 1986 The film: American Anthem The quality: low Spencer and Jessica spend way too long this week on a deep dive into what is perhaps the most significant film in the gymnastics pantheon, teen sports-drama-romance American Anthem. Jessica lovvvveeed this movie as a middle schooler. Spencer hates everything. It's gonna get good. We discuss it all: very excellent gymnast acting, backlit hair and 13-foot-wide denim jackets, THE TRIFFUS OF MURRRDERRR, an 11-week-old Jenny Rowland putting Daniela Silivas to shame, the lovely and sensitive handling of domestic abuse (jk it's monstrous), storing your grips IN THE LEAVES, excessive gymnastics grunting sounds, and the true hero of this story—Becky Cameron. *originally recorded in April 2020 Join Club Gym Nerd (or give it as a gift!). We are so excited to bring you our conversation with the one and only Kathy Johnson Clarke! She's a world bronze medalist, an Olympic silver and bronze medalist, an American Cup Champion, a national champion with Centenary College, where she competed in 1978 and 1979 — long before it was cool to do elite and college gymnastics at the same time — and of course she's a beloved commentator who has graced television screens in our sport for 41 years. Kathy shared so many incredible stories with us from helping to bring the gymnastics program back at Centenary, she shares how Friday Night Heights got its start, and of course her retirement as a commentator and all of the emotions that surfaced, a lot of which stem from her experiences as a gymnast. It's Thursday, which means it's time for Louisiana Considered to catch up on the week in politics. The Time- Picayune/The Advocate's editorial director and columnist Stephanie Grace joins us to discuss Gov.-elect Jeff Landry's latest appointees – and a recent announcement he made alongside Orleans Parish District Attorney Jason Williams. The University of New Orleans has had enrollment challenges in recent years, largely attributed to the impacts of hurricanes and COVID-19. Now, a new university president is taking over, and making enrollment a priority. Incoming president Kathy Johnson joins us to talk about her decision to move to New Orleans from Indiana, and what she hopes to bring to UNO. According to a report from Axios, New Orleans has the highest rate of fatal bicycle crashes among major metro areas in the U.S. To help combat the problems, the city has embraced a “complete streets” policy to make the city friendlier for pedestrians. Jennifer Ruley, Mobility and Safety division manager for the New Orleans Department of Public Works, tells us about a new hybrid pedestrian beacon on the Lafitte Greenway, and other measures to enhance street safety in the city. On this episode of Profile, Michael and I visit with Kelly Guay, owner of the Sunset Point Winery and her mother, Kathy Johnson, who is also the Tasting Room Manager and Vice President of the Stevens Point Alliance. Now, we all have hobbies, but what happens when your hobby becomes a passion, and that passion starts to consume more than just your free time? This is exactly what happened to Kelly Guay and her husband, Don. They started making wine at home for fun, which led to more wine and more experimentation. At some point, they decided to turn this hobby into a business. But they needed help. Kelly's mom and dad answered her call for help, and they relocated to Central Wisconsin to help with the construction and operations of the tasting room. Sunset Point Winery is now a fixture of downtown, and Kathy and Kelly have become fixtures of our community. This episode is really a masterclass on how to turn your side hustle into a career and how a family can band together to support a vision. Today is our fourth episode of transfer-focused podcasts. We have been looking at various aspects of transfer at Ivy Tech including the role of our transfer advocates on each campus to a look at recent changes and opportunities with dual credit transfer and how students can complete high school with one year already earned toward their college degree. In our most recent podcast, we discussed what is happening on a statewide level to expand transfer opportunities for students. Today, we are going to change our focus to highlight what we believe the be one of our oldest and strongest partnerships with a four-year university. Long before Ivy Tech was named as the community college for Indiana with transfer as a specific part of our mission, IUPUI and Ivy Tech forged a partnership called Passport to specifically identify transfer opportunities and provide a bridge for transferring from Ivy Tech to IUPUI. This partnership has now been in existence for more than 22 years and has successfully assisted literally thousands of students over that time. Our guests this week are: Dr. Kathy Lee, Chancellor, Ivy Tech Community College, Central Indiana Dr. Kathy Johnson, Executive Vice Chancellor and Chief Academic Officer, IUPUI Dr. Cathy Buyarski, Executive Associate Dean, University College, IUPUI Dr. Rod Brown, Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, Ivy Tech Central Indiana We included several calls to action in this week's episode. Check out the book Dr. Buyarski mentioned. It is: The Transfer Experience: A Handbook for Creating More Equitable and Successful Postsecondary System.
