Quitting your day job. It's something most Lady Startups will have to do... eventually. Our guest today, Alana had actually tried to quit her fulltime job and it didn't work. Soon after quitting she got a job offer for a gig that sounded too good to be true and went straight back to her corporate life in pharmaceuticals. But this time, she didn't love it. So finally after years of brainstorming she made the leap and founded Eye Heart Science, a fast growing science education business based in Sydney. Today, Eye Heart Science is in 40 schools and Alana has a team behind her bringing fun science based classes to kids across greater Sydney. So what I want to know is, how did she go about creating an education based business? and and how did she upscale her business, when in the beginning it was just her teaching science to kids after school? Chrissy Flanagan spent a large portion of her young adult life searching for a purpose. She tried what seems like every hobby imaginable, knitting, flamenco, did some travelling, practised the ukulele and just nothing stuck. Until Chrissy found sausage making. As Chrissy got better and better at making sausages she realised there was a gap in the market for quality snags made from good cuts of meat. So she launched Chrissy's Cuts, opened a restaurant called the sausage factory and started brewing beer to accompany her quality snags. Soon enough Chrissy became known as Sydney's Sausage Queen. So how does one go about building multiple businesses in an industry you have next to no experience in and why did Chrissy ultimately leave her day job after being a self-proclaimed side hustler for so many years? In 2013 Instagram looked nothing like it does now. People were sharing super saturated photos of their dogs, their feet and what they were eating at their local cafe. But no one was using Instagram to market their business. Jess Hatzis-Walker and her co-founders knew that consumers were ready for a social first business model, so they gave it their best shot and launched Frank Body, a honest coffee with a cheeky voice. Soon enough Aussies everywhere were posing nude, or in a robe covered in this magic coffee scrub. It was the thing everyone wanted to get their hands on. Almost a decade on and Frank Body have over 800K on Instagram, they ship products to over 150 countries and sell one bag of scrub every minute. Zara Seidler was scrolling on her phone when she started receiving several very similar messages from friends. Someone she knew of, Sam, but had never met was looking to start a news platform for young people. This was right up Zara's alley. So she messaged him, they went for coffee and they hit it off. And the very next day, they started the Daily Aus. For over three years The Daily Aus was a side hustle but in 2020 what was making headlines became incredibly personal, black lives matter, the US election and COVID all had a part to play. In just 12 months their side hustle accumulated over 200K followers. So what's it like being just 25 and creating one of the most recognisable social news platforms in the country? and did Zara ever anticipate this level of success? Allira Potter isn't your regular Lady Startup. If Allira had to describe her work she would say, that she is an intuitive, a creator, writer, speaker, a model, an empowerment and mindset coach, manifesting queen, baby witch and an all-around spiritual sister. But Allira's life over 18 months ago looked nothing like this. She was newly divorced, working a corporate job, living pay check to pay check and had turned to partying as a coping mechanism. But then in early 2020 after a four-day bender, she realised something needed to give. So as the world went into lockdown Allira went on a detox and turned to her spiritual side. Turns out Allira's newly rejuvenated witchy side was actually something she could make a career out of, so now she works for herself. JSHealth Vitamins are one of the best selling vitamins ranges in Australia. But getting to this point was not easy. When Jessica Sepel was fourteen she developed an unhealthy obsession with nutrition and fad dieting. This ultimately lead her to study health science at University, so she could learn as much as she could about fad dieting. But then through her studies, she had a breakthrough. Instead of channelling her knowledge into unhealthy practices, she put it back into her work. Jess became a nutritionist, started a blog, wrote three books and eventually developed a fitness program and an app. Jess had finally made enough money to invest in a big project, JSHealth Vitamins. Today Jess's business has an estimated worth of $426 million. So how has Jess built such a successful business in such a short space of time? And did she ever consider giving up? Did you know that on average Aussie women are retiring with 35% less super than men? Well, thankfully our guests today want to change that. Christina Hobbs and Alex Andrews were at a crossroads. Christina had just come back to Australia after years of working overseas with the UN and Alex was recovering from a chronic illness. For years they had been talking about starting a superfund for women by women. But the timing never felt quite right. And then in early 2018 everything fell into place. And with the help of their third co-founder Zoe Lamont, they founded Verve Super. A super fund that not only looks after your super but empowers women across all their finances. So how do you even start something like this? And how do you make your product stand out in an already saturated market? Anna Baird was a podiatrist for six years. And as a woman who loves fashion, she grew tired of recommending to her client's shoes that she wouldn't be caught dead in. Anna knew that if she could combine comfort with fashion she would be onto something good. The only problem was, designing a shoe that's both fashionable and comfortable is actually really tricky, which is why most companies won't do it. So Anna reduced her workdays and spent three years developing her first range of shoes. And she won't sugarcoat it, those first years in business were reallyhard. Today Bared are leaders in footwear. Anyone who has ever tried Anna's shoes will tell you they're the comfiest shoes they have ever owned. And, importantly they're fashion-forward. Alex Tanya Weller, like many other people, had tried to buy a rug online and failed. In fact, in 2014 people all over the world were scrolling the internet in search of the perfect rug. But no one was buying them. So Alex and her husband set out to create Miss Amara, an e-commerce rug business that takes the hassle out of buying a rug online. Seven years on and Miss Amara's customer service is at the top of its game. Customers can jump online and see what a rug will look like in their space, can seek assistance from professionals and even try it at home and return it if they aren't happy. Hannah and Verity had been running LVLY, a same-day flower and gift delivery service for six years. The second three years had seen strong growth, before a bushfire natural disaster – and a few other issues – threatened to turn their business into ashes. Who knew that another disaster – this time a global pandemic – would trigger a massive turnaround? Suddenly LVLY became the perfect way to connect with family and friends in lockdown. You could send flowers, a care package, some chocolate, even alcohol to a friend having a bad day, a birthday or something worth celebrating. On the very same day. 2020 turned out to be LVLY's biggest year to date, with some weeks recording 800% growth on the year before. Hannah and Verity had to suddenly learn to scale up their business and fast. So what was it like being so close to shutting up shop? And how did they adapt to the constant changing of demand? Erin Cayless, Lana Taylor and Bonnie Hindmarsh were shot into the limelight because of their NRL husbands. But in 2014 everything was set to change, when Bonnie got on an idea. She wanted to flip a house. Bonnie convinced her friends to quit their jobs and buy a house in Sydney's northern suburbs for $800,000. They renovated it and made a profit. In the seven years since Three Birds Renovations have flipped 14 homes together. But that's not all, they have written two books, created two online courses - so other women can learn how to flip and style their own home and along the way have accumulated almost 900,000 followers on Instagram. Anaita Sarkar's accessory business Olivia & Co had just started taking off. When something started to annoy her. At the end of every workday, she would stare at piles and piles of online orders wrapped in plastic. She knew that within seconds of those packages landing on her customer's doorstep, that they would end up in the bin. She knew there had to be a more sustainable option. After twelve months of research, prototypes and trial and error, Anaita and her husband created Australia's first certified home-compostable, zero-waste shipping mailer. It was an immediate hit. Today Hero Packaging is a multi mullion dollar business and has shipped over 15 million mailers. So how did Anaita break into a market she had no background in? And how have she and her husband created such a profitable business in just three years? LINKS You can keep up with Anaita on her Instagram. Claire Dunne was at a crossroads. She was 23, working on her parent's farm and all she wanted to do was travel, but she didn't have the money to do it. Then she got an idea. Shelley Sullivan is a serial entrepreneur. Long before she founded ModelCo and MCoBeauty, Shelley owned a modelling agency, it was here she found her vision for ModelCo. When models were coming into Shelley's office with orange hands from fake tanning, she knew there had to be an easier, and cheaper option. So she made Tan Airbrush, the world's first tan in a can. Today that tan is believed to be sold every 36 seconds. It's no coincidence that ModelCo has been kicking goals for twenty years. They've been innovating products, understanding their consumer and collaborating with the likes of Hayley Bieber, Elle Macpherson and Karl Lagerfeld, they've even had Celeste Barber come on board as an ambassador. Rachael Sarra knew that if she was going to make it as an artist a great product wasn't going to be enough. She needed to hustle. So Rachael endeavoured to diversify her revenue streams. She upped her engagement on social media, illustrated a book and boosted her brand through collaborations with the likes of Auspost, Hey Tiger and Kmart. Rachael's work is authentic. It's vibrant, warm and incredibly lively with touches of pink. But it's also deeply personal as it merges her two worlds, that as a young Goreng Goreng woman and a proud Ipswich girl. So what is it like working as an artist in 2021 when copying work has become common practice? Does she feel secure working in a service-based industry? Jessica Ducrou, you might not know her name but you've definitely heard of her work. She's the person behind Splendour In The Grass, Falls Music And Arts Festival and Homebake, to name a few. Sarah Andrews had spent her life searching for purpose. Until one day scrolling the internet, she found her answer: a run-down cottage in Tasmania. It was secluded, overlooked the sea and needed some love... That cottage, Captains Rest, is now one of the most sought-after luxury Airbnbs in the country. What are your pain points? You know, the things that as a customer you wish were different? For Mia Klitsas it was tampons, specifically the flimsy paper packaging they come in. And at 21 in the year 2005, she decided enough was enough. She got her life savings together, borrowed money from the bank and got her friends and family to invest in her business, Moxie. Tampons in cute tins that won’t show up unannounced. Now, Over fifteen years later Moxie is so much more. Sarah Davidson was a young, hard-working lawyer with a severe caffeine habit when she was diagnosed with adrenal fatigue - a condition that left her in a state of constant exhaustion. And no, not even 10 cups of coffee a day could help her. In a bid to replace her coffee addiction whilst traveling in Asia, Sarah discovered Matcha. A finely ground powder of green tea leaves. Little did she know that that discovery would lead her to start a side hustle called Matcha Maiden and later on, become a full-time self-described fun-trepreneur. Sarah is also the host of the Seize The Yay podcast and has just written a book, totally transforming what was once her corporate career into a LadyStartup. So how did she do it? Is Justin Timberlake Cancelled? On Wednesday we discussed Framing Britney Spears, the new New York Times documentary, and one theme that has emerged is the role Justin Timberlake played in Britney’s story. Plus, we all know about burnout. It’s something we experience at varying stages of our lives and careers, but what about the kind of burnout that comes from being dissatisfied? Groundhog burnout is the type of burnout you get from feeling incredibly unfulfilled, rather than the physical burnout of the demands from your life. And, our best and worst of the week including pillows and toilet paper. THE END BITS Recommendations: Mia thinks you should listen to more Harry Styles. There are some products that you need but just aren’t fun to buy. Coat hangers, staples, ironing boards, flour... Here’s an idea for a business: find a product nobody likes buying and then make a version of it that people will describe as a “cult buy”. That’s what Ava Matthews and her business partner Bec Jefferd did when they noticed that skincare was having a moment but sunscreens were a product that just weren't very…. sexy. They changed that, almost overnight, with Ultra Violette. Their range of sunscreens come in distinctive bright blue packaging that you've probably seen all over Instagram. So, how did they do it? Laura Thompson started The Koorie Circle almost five years ago while she was working as a health professional full time, with the aim of making statement earrings that tell a story and celebrate the culture, history and identity of Aboriginal Australia. But with one business chugging along successfully, Laura realised she wanted to do more. So she founded Clothing the Gap, a Victorian Aboriginal owned and led social enterprise. They produce merch with meaning, like t-shirts, jumpers and beanies, and earlier this year, they spearheaded a national campaign to free the flag. This is Part 2 of Mia Freedman’s chat with Jodie Fox about her business Shoes of Prey. You can find Part 1 in the Lady Startup Stories feed. Jodie Fox described August 28, 2018 as “one of the most horrific days of my life”. It was the day her multi-million dollar business, Shoes of Prey, officially collapsed. Jodie’s co-founders - her ex husband and his best mate - were no longer part of the day to day running of the business and on the day the call was made to pull the pin, Jodie was at the company’s factory in China. In this conversation, Jodie tells Mia exactly how that day unfolded, and the unexpected changes that have happened in Jodie’s life since. Jodie Fox founded Shoes of Prey in 2008 with her husband and his friend. The business allowed women to design their own shoes online and have them shipped anywhere in the world. They broke even at two months, hit multi-million dollar revenues in under two years, and raised tens of millions of dollars in funding from top-tier investors. But in 2018, the business failed. In part one of this conversation, Jodie tells Mia Freedman about how she built a ‘Purple Cow’ into her business, the smart way she pitched to investors and what she did when it all started to go downhill. What happens to your business if you become instantly famous? Not if your business becomes famous, but if you, the founder, become a massive star. When Laura Byrne appeared on an Aussie reality TV show in 2017, her business, ToniMay, was instantly impacted. But not in the way that you might expect. Aside from ToniMay’s sudden boost into the public spotlight, the business itself has gone through lots of changes since it first began over 10 years ago. There have been disastrous setbacks, new partners and a wholesale nightmare. In this conversation, Laura tells Mia Freedman about how she built her business up from a stall at Bondi Markets to a shop on Oxford Street in Paddington, and how becoming a mother has changed how she works. How do you run a rideshare company in the middle of a global pandemic when nobody is going anywhere? And when you yourself are in Stage 4 lockdown in Melbourne? George McEncroe is often referred to as the Accidental CEO because she started her company just a few years ago when she was a comedian and single mother of 4 , looking to earn some extra cash. She knew nothing about making an app. But she knew that women didn’t always feel safe in the current rideshare system - both as a driver and passenger. In this conversation, George tells Mia Freedman about how she built Shebah, the women-only rideshare company, into a national brand and how COVID-19 jammed the brakes on her expansion (literally). Some businesses are born unexpectedly, from tragedies nobody ever saw coming. When Samantha Longmore was 20 years old she was involved in not just one, but two shocking accidents on the same day. Her life would never be the same. One day, sitting at home in Binalong (in the Southern Tablelands of New South Wales) sick of feeling unsure about her place in the world, Sam made a decision to start a business in the most unlikely and unexpected way. Ladies and Gents, Pete Evans is back and he's feeling vindicated after finding a single study that supports (not really if you read the whole thing) some of his bogus beliefs about sunscreen. So, should he think more carefully about what he posts when he's a person of influence? And speaking of influence, an Instagram account has blown up this week that shows exactly what it looks like behind the feed of influencers. So is it funny or creepy? And, Rachel Corbett has been roped into writing a monthly newsletter, dishing out advice so she gets some practice in by trying to solve a listeners dilemma about changing careers later in life.
