In this episode of Dog Edition – Hound Headlines we look at the following news stories Britain's Ugliest Dog has been crowned. Four-year-old Peggy, believed to be a Pug and Chinese Crested cross (a ‘Pugese') The competition was organized by a printing company. Peggy won a pamper session at a pet salon. Salon manager Sam Burton said: "I think she's really cute in her own way." Which dog has the strongest bite? Some scientists did a study a few years ago and it's resurfaced in the news this week. The top three were as follows: (1) The Kangal has the strongest bite of any breed of dog – an impressive 743 psi. This makes them particularly good at guarding livestock from predators in their native Turkey (2) The Dogue de Bordeaux has a fearsome bite strength of 556 psi - although this breed is notoriously so lazy they are unlikely to often use it. (3) The Mastiff's impressive 552 psi bite has been used to great effect over the years in everything from guarding villages to hunting wolves. Oodie for dogs! Edition: Deborah Pasmantier. Welcome to the Veterinary Breakroom! In the breakroom, Alyssa Watson, DVM, and Beth Molleson, DVM, discuss the important, relevant topics affecting veterinarians today. When Dr. Alyssa's beloved Dogue de Bordeaux, Luna, needed a digit amputation for a tumor, she had to decide if she was going to be Luna's mom or Luna's doctor. While a common practice in veterinary medicine, treating our personal pets can lead to questions about everything from clouded medical judgment to eligibility for insurance claims to legality of writing prescriptions. Join us in the breakroom as Dr. Beth and Dr. Alyssa discuss which situations they feel comfortable treating their own animals and which they prefer to have a trusted colleague step in.Contact us:Podcast@briefmedia.comWhere to find us:Cliniciansbrief.com/podcastsFacebook.com/clinciansbriefTwitter: @cliniciansbriefInstagram: @clinicians.briefThe Team:Alyssa Watson, DVM - HostBeth Molleson, DVM - HostAlexis Ussery - Producer & Digital Content CoordinatorRandall Stupka - Podcast Production & Sound EditingThis podcast recording represents the opinions of Dr. Alyssa Watson and Dr. Beth Molleson. According to the announcement, “Overfishing, pollution, pesticides, disease, urban sprawl and, of course, climate change contribute to declines in imperiled species' populations worldwide.” The envoy's job will be to help the U.S. and other countries address these threats to animals. Unfortunately, while the act of appointing a person tasked with representing the interests of animals is progress, we fear that the philosophical approach by which this particular envoy will approach this critical task is not. In fact, rather than looking to create a brighter future, the special envoy appears committed to defending an antiquated one that will exacerbate, rather than lessen, non-human suffering and death. For those who want to skip the news and go straight to the main discussion, it begins at the 18:25 mark. There is also a 15-minute sample of the podcast for those who have not yet subscribed. Sample podcasts are also available on Apple, Spotify, and Google Play.California's SB 879 banning “the testing of pesticides, chemical substances and other products on cats and dogs” was signed into law. As of January 1, toxicity testing for consumer and industrial goods on dogs and cats will be illegal. Although the legislative sponsor called these tests “barbaric,” the new law allows testing on other animals. It also “exempts medical and federally required testing from the ban.” Meanwhile, the U.S. Senate passed S.2952, the FDA Modernization Act. The bill removes the requirement that drugs “be tested on animals before they could be used on humans in clinical trials.” Instead, the bill “gives drug sponsors the option to use scientifically rigorous, proven non-animal test methods,” including cell-based assays, organ chips, computer models, and other non-animal or human biology-based test methods. The bill, sponsored by Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ) and Rand Paul (R-KY), passed unanimously. It will (hopefully) be taken up and passed in the House of Representatives.San Francisco is now home to the nation's first restaurant for dogs. Dogue serves pastries, “dogguccinos,” and on Sundays, soup and “a $75, three-course tasting menu.” Patrons are encouraged to slurp up their soup from the bowl.If your dog has a knack for being there in times of trouble, it is no accident. Studies have found that dogs can tell human moods by facial expressions and language. They are so good at this, they can figure out whether someone is happy or angry by just looking at the top half of someone's face. But a new study finds that they do not even have to look at you to know something is wrong. The study concluded that dogs could detect when people are upset by smell. Specifically, they detect changes in breath and body odor that results from the release of “Volatile Organic Compounds produced by humans in response to stress.”
There is a new viral dare, where girls are daring one another to see if they can fit in a dryer, well two ladies tried the dare, and things went wrong. 911 had to be called, and first responders about lost it as these two ladies thought the whole situation was a big joke, thankfully everyone is okay, and props to our first responders for their patience. Also.... San Francisco is now home to a new fine dining restaurant, but the restaurant is just for the dogs.... The menu at Dogue includes elegant pastries during the day and fine dining at night. Pet parents can pay 75-bucks to let their furry ones enjoy a three-course tasting menu on Sundays, including chicken-mushroom soup. The owner and chef says he only uses fresh and organic ingredients like veggies, wild antelope and duck. They even have a “pawtisserie” for baked treats and “dogguccinos.” To enjoy, you have to be a Sunday walk-in diner.

Platz. Auch sein Bruder Marvin ist moderner Fünfkämpfer im Nationalkader. Meet Aldred Dogue, the founder of Africa Foods Mill, an enterprise in Benin that was created to help smallholder farmers in the country reduce post harvest losses. Aldred had learned many of the smallholder farmers were incurring losses because they couldn't get their produce to market on time and he saw this an an opportunity to help out and add value. With Africa Foods Mill he purchases produce like carrots, cabbage and green beans directly from the smallholder farmers and then transform them into ready to use, packaged convenience food, distributed through supermarkets in Cotonou. In the interview we speak about how he got the business up and running, how he entered a market dominated by food imports from abroad and what his advice is for succeeding as an entrepreneur in Africa. We also talk about how the Anzisha Prize, Africa's premier award and accelerator for the continents youngest entrepreneurs has impacted his journey and how he managed to get into their program. There are quite a few powerful lessons about the inner game of entrepreneurship in this interview. So we hope you stick around. And now, without further ado, enter Aldred.

Dogs are known as our best friends and on this week’s Super Awesome Science Show, we’re going to explore some of the science behind these loving, caring, and devoted members of our lives. We first talk with Tanya Kim. She is one of Canada’s best known journalists but she also is one of this country’s strongest dog and animal advocates. She’s also the companion of Miss Mabel, a Dogue de Bordeaux who has carved out a career as a model. We learn about the importance of Mabel in Tanya’s life and what being a canine celebrity is like. In exploring the science of dogs in our lives, one conclusion that continues to be repeated is that when it comes to understanding us as humans and our emotions, dogs know. We speak with the researcher behind this statement, Nandini Maharaj. She is a health research development officer at the University of British Columbia and a doctoral student looking at the benefit of dogs in our lives. We learn about the psychology behind the connection humans have with dogs and learn that the impression can last a lifetime. Because of this effect of dogs in our lives, researchers have wondered if they can help to reduce the stress associated with loneliness. Our next guest, John-Tyler Binfet, an Associate Professor of Education at the University of British Columbia Okanagan Campus, has been exploring this theory and the results have been amazing. We discuss the benefits of therapy dogs on students and learn how he’s branching out to help people of all ages. In our SASS Class, we learn how to take care of your best friend with Christina Karkanis, veterinarian and owner of the Bay City Animal Hospital in North Bay, Ontario. We learn about the best ways to care for your pet and how to ensure they have a long, healthy life. If you enjoy The Super Awesome Science Show, please take a minute to rate it on Apple Podcasts and be sure to tell a friend about the show. Thanks to you, we’ve been nominated for a Canadian Podcast Award as Outstanding Science and Medicine Series. Let’s keep the awesome momentum going together! OPEN LETTER: VERY ILLUSTRIOUS PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF NORTH AMERICA AND SIR PRIME MINISTER OF THE SOVIET UNION. Will you please excuse us that we do not mention your names and surnames, because we do not know in what year this letter will reach your hands and as it is just obvious, times are changing and we do not know if at that time you will be holding the First Magistracy Office of your respective countries. The purpose of this open letter is to inform you that in LATIN AMERICA was already achieved the CONQUEST OF SPACE. It is barely natural that you will skeptically smile before such information, possibly considered by you as an “INSOLENCE”. We comply with the duty to advise you not to spend any more money on COSMIC ROCKETS; those monies should be better used. The cosmic rockets are good for nothing and are a real failure. There currently exists in a secret location in SOUTH AMERICA, in the deep heart of the jungle, a scientific society with ninety-eight eminent scientists coming from different European Nations. This society following the footsteps of the great sage GUILLERMO MARCONI, learned to use the powerful SOLAR ENERGY with GREAT MASTERY. Currently such society builds under the guidance of wise MARTIANS men, wonderful interplanetary ships with which they have not only studied all your territories but they have also managed to travel to the MOON and to MARS. It is not in vain to explain that the aforementioned scientific society has enough money to continue its works thanks to the economic support of the MARTIANS. LET ME CLARIFY. It would not be strange for us that you throw outraged this letter because your pride and skepticism is well known on the whole planet Earth. Nonetheless before few years you'll have concrete evidence about our claims. Fuel liquid you use for cosmic rockets is useless for the interplanetary navigation. THE COSMIC SHIPS designed by Martians and built by the sages of the aforementioned scientific society, under the direction of the Martians sages are powered by Solar energy. The Scientists of the aforementioned society are eminently religious and there is even a priest among them, it does not matter which Religion. We are absolutely convinced that it is absolutely impossible the conquest of space if we exclude the SPIRITUALITY. All the inhabitants of the Cosmos are deeply religious. Everyone knows very well that the DIVINE is latent and immanent in every atom of the infinite. The aforementioned SCIENTIFIC SOCIETY has built a great UNDERGROUND laboratory in the heart of the JUNGLE. This laboratory has everything necessary for research. Contact with the Martians was achieved on December 16 in the year of 1955 at 5 in the afternoon. Five Martian machines flew at that time over the jungle and one landed. Four Martian people descended and among them the Martian Chief of the expedition. Since then the contact was established and the COSMIC SHIPS FROM MARS are landing normally in that region. Those ninety-eight resident scientists in the deep jungle of South America, usually coexist with the MARTIANS and from them are learning the science of INTERPLANETARY NAVIGATION. The aforementioned scientists received from the hands of the Martian Chief, illustrious Sir TAGE, a sheet of gold with the following inscription: "LOGA (MARS) UNIVERSAL BROTHER OF THE IMMENSE SPACE, RENDERS HOMAGE AND FRIENDSHIP TO DOGUE (EARTH) IN THE VEHE-MENT LONGING TO UNITE ALL HUMANS BEINGS LIVING IN ONE SPIRIT, IN THE INFINITE SPIRIT FOR ETERNAL GLORY AND PEACE" Congratulations to the Martian Chief Mr. TAGE for his speech of four words are: "SUNDI, DOGUE, LOGA, which means God, Earth and Mars". With this speech and the sheet of gold, the ALLIANCE between Martians and earthlings has been sealed. We also extend our congratulations to MR. MARTINELLI, for the wholesome and meaningful ring given to Mr. TAGE on the 12th of October 1956 twelve hours Meridian that took place on the face of the Earth the most important cosmic event, of all the centuries after the coming of our Lord THE CHRIST. One of the most illustrious members of the afore mentioned scientific society, the illustrious Sr Narcissus Genovese says that at that precise time the "COLUMBUS EXPEDITION" left heading to Planet Mars. A lot we owe on this matter to Mr. Narcissus Genovese on the aforementioned Scientific Expedition to the planet Mars. If this letter, arrives to him please receive our congratulations. As well as the three ships that came with Columbus to America, were also three the COSMIC SHIPS built by the terrestrial scientists under the direction of the Martians. The names of the THREE COSMIC SHIPS are: "LOGA", "DOGE", "CUNDI" (MARS EARTH, ALLIANCE). The interior of the Ships were decorated with THE IMAGE OF CHRIST and the trip was performed successfully. The CONVOY was made up of three TERRESTRIAL COSMIC SHIPS and six Martian who FULFILLED the mission of escorting Earthling crafts. Nine people formed the crew of Earth Ships. Three for each one of the three EARTHLING SHIPS. The first stage of cosmic flight was the MOON and was absolutely proven over and over again, that the MOON is a DEAD world. The expedition rested on the Moon and then continued their journey heading to MARS. Ten ships of MARTIAN origin joined in the Moon to the expeditioners. All the inhabitants of the city of TANIO capital of the planet MARS, came to the AIRPORT to WELCOME to the inhabitants of the Earth. Five days remained the expeditioners on the planet MARS dedicated to the OBSERVATION and study. It was a lot what they learned on MARS and after returning victorious they continued their studies and research in the heart of the South American jungle. The NINETY -EIGHT European scientists dedicated to this kind of research and study under the guidance of wise men MARTIANS, want to share their knowledge with all the inhabitants of the Earth. They want humanity to participate of the INTERPLANETARY navigation but Russia and the United States with their Atomic experiments and their nuclear explosions, are clogging us, are preventing the members of the AUGUST scientific society from making us all the inhabitants of the Earth, partakers of the cosmic journeys. The TWO GREAT WORLD WARS which filled the world of pain and now the cold war with all the possibilities that it becomes hot and refill the world of blood and destruction are the main factors that impede the cultural interchange with the Martians and the cosmic journeys. There is no need for more cosmic rockets, the contact with Martians is already done it's a fact. Now what is needed to participate in the cosmic journeys is the DISSOLUTION OF THE “I”. As long as the “I” exists, there will be no PEACE, and unless there is PEACE, the interplanetary travels are impossible. At this precise moment in which we live, not COSMIC ROCKETS are needed, but the study of the “I” and its TOTAL DEATH. Thus, and only thus, the TRAVELS TO MARS will be possible. It is impossible to take MURDERERS to MARS, THIEVES, DRUNKARDS, GLUTTONS, GREEDY, MATERIALISTIC, MARXISTS, enemies of the eternal, PROSTITUTES, etc. On MARS only reigns PEACE and not even Governments, nationalities, armies and police are needed. On Mars there are no CRIMINALS and if one were born would be considered as sick and would be taken to an isolated sanatorium. Think gentlemen about what this means. Think of a world like that, in a world where the “I” no longer exists. Imagine for an instant an Earthling army invading MARS. Understand what such horror means, such barbarity. The author of this letter kindly BEG you gentlemen in the name of the Truth, end the Atomic explosions, end the cold war and start an era of Universal Spirituality. In a special way I ask the SOVIET UNION, suspend the broadcasting publicly and privately of the MATERIALIST DIALECTIC, and intensify the propaganda in favor of the SPIRITUALITY. Know Sir that all the inhabitants of the COSMOS worship the DIVINITY and the conquest of space is impossible without SPIRITUALITY. Please gentlemen: I beseech you on behalf of the inhabitants of the Earth, do not damage us more with your wars, hate to DIVINITY, nuclear explosions, etc., etc., etc. From the book COSMIC SHIPS – CHAPER IV SIGNED IN MEXICO ON THE 29 DAYS OF THE MONTH OF APRIL.
