Best and worst of human nature in Los Angeles, insurance crisis, climate change, Liberal leadership rules, and more

The people of Los Angeles are pulling together as the fires burn on the outskirts of the city — volunteers, donation centres, and families helping families. But the city is also seeing some of the worst of human nature — scam texts, looting, and selfishness. Police have imposed curfews and sent in the National Guard to stop looting, and the FBI is investigating after a water bomber provided by Quebec was struck by a civilian drone. And: The disaster in L.A. is highlighting another problem: insurance. Many people in the area lost their insurance coverage because it got too expensive, or companies refused to renew it. It's a concern elsewhere too — including Canada — as climate change makes some residential areas too risky to insure. Also: The Liberals have set some of the rules for their leadership campaign. A few people have declared their intentions to run, but another cabinet minister says she's out: Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly. There are still no details about whether there will be a convention, or how the voting will happen, but one thing we do know… the new leader and next prime minister will be chosen by March 9th.Plus: Trump given an unconditional discharge, inauguration in Venezuela, banks bail on net zero pledge, and more.

This Day in Legal History: William Rehnquist BornOn October 1, 1924, William Hubbs Rehnquist, the 16th Chief Justice of the United States, was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Appointed to the Supreme Court in 1972 by President Nixon, Rehnquist became a polarizing figure, known for his staunch conservatism and originalist approach to the Constitution. His judicial philosophy often focused on restricting federal authority and bolstering states' rights, positions that critics argued rolled back civil rights protections and hindered federal progress on social justice issues. In 1986, President Reagan elevated Rehnquist to Chief Justice, a decision that pushed the Court further right. At his swearing-in, Reagan hailed him as a defender of constitutional values, but opponents viewed his appointment as the solidification of an increasingly reactionary judiciary. The same ceremony saw Antonin Scalia, another conservative, sworn in, signaling a shift that would influence rulings on affirmative action, voting rights, and church-state separation.Rehnquist's tenure included controversial rulings, notably his role in Bush v. Gore (2000), which critics argue undermined democratic principles by halting the Florida recount and effectively deciding a presidential election. His leadership on the Court was also marked by decisions that curtailed congressional power under the Commerce Clause, weakening federal authority in areas like civil rights and environmental regulation. While his supporters celebrated him as a guardian of limited government, his legacy remains contentious, with lasting impacts on the Court's direction and the balance between federal and state power.A fun Rehnquist fact is that you'll see in any official pictures or portraits of him as Chief Justice, his sleeves have yellow arm bands. Rehnquist insisted on adding four gold stripes on each sleeve to distinguish himself from the associate justices. He was inspired by the costume of the Lord Chancellor in a production of the Gilbert and Sullivan opera Iolanthe. Rehnquist's addition of the stripes was an unusual departure from the traditional plain black robes worn by justices, and it became a symbol of his unique approach to the role.New York Mayor Eric Adams has brought on three high-profile litigators as he faces federal criminal charges. William Burck, a former George W. Bush White House lawyer and current Fox Corp. board member, is one of the lawyers advising Adams. Burck, known for representing figures like Stephen Bannon and Don McGahn, joins Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan partners John Bash III and Avi Perry on Adams' defense team. Alex Spiro, a partner at Quinn Emanuel with experience defending high-profile clients like Elon Musk, is leading the defense. The charges involve allegations that Adams accepted lavish travel perks and had improper ties to the Turkish government. Adams has denied wrongdoing and vowed to continue as mayor while fighting the charges. His legal team has requested the case's dismissal.Meanwhile, a legal defense fund for Adams has paid over $877,000 to law firm WilmerHale, and several staffers have left his administration amid ongoing investigations. Additionally, Theresa Hassler was recently appointed general counsel for the Mayor's Fund to Advance New York City, a nonprofit under scrutiny for its fundraising practices.Ex-Bannon Lawyer With Fox News Ties Joins NYC Mayor Defense TeamToday, on October 1, 2024, a Georgia judge will hear a challenge from Democrats against new election rules introduced by the Republican-led Georgia Election Board. These rules, approved in August, allow county officials to investigate discrepancies in vote counts and scrutinize election-related documents before certifying results. Democrats argue that these changes, which came just before the November 5 election, are designed to erode trust in the process and could delay certification. The rules were backed by three board members who are allies of Donald Trump, who continues to challenge his 2020 loss in Georgia. Trump has praised these board members for their efforts to increase election security, though critics, including Republican Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, say the changes could undermine voter confidence and strain election workers.A separate lawsuit was also filed to block a new requirement for a hand count of ballots. Democrats contend that these rules create confusion and provide too much leeway for local officials to investigate alleged fraud, potentially delaying results. The trial in Fulton County Superior Court is part of a broader national focus on battleground states like Georgia, where both Republicans and Democrats are intensely focused ahead of the upcoming presidential election.Challenge by US Democrats to Georgia election rules goes to trial | ReutersAs artificial intelligence (AI) continues to transform industries, more U.S. law firms are appointing executives to lead AI initiatives. Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld and McDermott Will & Emery both announced new AI leadership hires, with Akin appointing Jeff Westcott as director of practice technology and AI innovation, and McDermott hiring Christopher Cyrus as director of AI innovation. These moves reflect the growing belief that AI will have a permanent role in the legal profession, particularly in areas like research, drafting legal documents, and reducing administrative tasks.Law firms are responding to client expectations and the surge in AI technologies, which have expanded dramatically in the past two years. Other firms, such as Covington & Burling, Latham & Watkins, and Reed Smith, have similarly created AI and data science roles since the rise of tools like ChatGPT. Westcott will focus on how Akin Gump can strategically invest in AI technology, assessing whether to develop tools in-house, purchase products, or partner with vendors.Additionally, legal AI startup Harvey's chief strategy officer, Gordon Moodie, transitioned to Debevoise & Plimpton as a partner specializing in mergers and acquisitions. These developments underscore the legal industry's growing focus on AI integration as firms aim to remain competitive and adapt to technological advances.More US law firms turn to executives for AI leadership roles | Reuters This is a public episode. 3 New Leadership Rules of the Pandemic Era

Man Amongst Men

Great leaders adapt first. Unfortunately, too many leaders are trying to fit the square peg of their “non-pandemic era” leadership into the round hole of the present moment. And it isn’t working. That’s why I’m seeing leaders burning out, frustrated or at the very least…not fully engaged in their work or life. When this happens, the businesses, communities and families you lead suffer. To get you back on track, I propose 3 new leadership rules for the pandemic era: Master the Art of Leading Yourself First, Before Leading Others - The most responsible thing you can do right now, is to focus on showing up the 100% best version of yourself - Instead of using your energy to get others to change – nearly always an exercise in futility – use your energy to upgrade where you’ve been drifting                                                                                    When the Future is Uncertain, Build Trust in the Now - Instead of giving all of your energy to fretting over the unknown of the future, focus your attention on winning each day, each moment, in the present - Your routines and rituals – like morning routines, evening routines, working out, mindfulness practices – are essential to connecting with your inner stability - When you can build trust in the power of now, the people you lead will feel it and follow suit                                                                                    Stop Waiting and Start Leading - Too many people are stuck in a holding pattern waiting for someone to tell them what to do - Great leaders adapt first. - It’s time for you to lead, make decisive actions and build a better normal so we can all get back on our feet faster In this episode, we drill down into each of these categories, and I’ll be sharing examples from my clients lives…as well as my own life in running my own business, this podcast and The Great Man Mastermind. Oh and today we have a very special guest joining Bryan and I for her very first appearance on this podcast – or any podcast for that matter – my chief operating officer Kalli Simon. Kalli started as a full time employee with me back in February of this year, and she’ll share with you how we’re applying these 3 rules to the operation of our business today, tomorrow and the many years into the future. This is Kelly Orchard’s Apple A Day. Sixty Seconds on wisdom, success and personal growth.  Many people adopt their own set of rules to live by. There are also rules to being a great leader. In an article published in “Entrepreneur Magazine”, there is a list of seven golden rules of leadership. When you are a leader, you must promote growth within your company, community or home.  Do what’s right for your people. Leaders who are great have the best interest of their team at heart. Allow your team to own the credit for their success. Good leaders go out of their way to recognize their team’s efforts. Teach them what you’ve learned.  Pass down the knowledge you have gained with your leadership experience. Inspire them and remain positive. Great leaders make people feel good about what they do. Remember where you started. You didn’t start out as a leader, and you’ve had to work your way toward your success, so remember that those you lead are just getting started too! Being a leader holds tremendous responsibility. When you lead, follow these sound rules and you’ll always be successful!   This has been Kelly Orchard’s Apple A Day… Now, go out and be fruitful!

(music) Hi everyone it’s KeriTV! Happy Tuesday! And I'm super inspired about this video today because of last week and how amazing my coach was and I wanted to share a little bit about why coaching is so great, so stay tuned. (music) Okay so, just to clarify, my video series is not just about buying and selling property or investing or Los Angeles. The reason I called it KeriTV and thank you Stacey Flannigan, is I like to talk about all things that are in my life. Well, thanks I guess to anybody watching who cares about my life. Giving back on real estate tips on buying and selling, investing, renting , etc. But also just what it’s like in my world. The people I know, the business I go to, the clients I know, professionals I work with and just sharing all of my world. So thanks everybody for watching and today’s episode about coaching is inspired by last week. So I coach with the Tom Ferry organization and it’s not about the coach you have, I think it’s just about a coach. So I get questions a lot, emails, texts, DM’s, phone calls. Should I get a coach? Does coaching work? What do you think? Coaching is not (like anything in life) some magic pill that you take and you’re healed or your successful or whatever. Everything takes work and as anyone knows who is a real estate agent, you’re your own business owner, you’re an entrepreneur. There’s no manual, hey go out and do this and it’ll happen, you know, like Forrest Gump. So having somebody that can help you out that’s trained to coach people and be a leader is very beneficial. Now I want to dispell some of the myths that come with coaching. Most people think oh a coach is just rah rah rah, motivate you, make you accountable, and tell you that you’re doing a great job. Well sure, yeah, you can get a coach every week and get on the phone and say hey you woke up today, good job. I gotta tell you, my coach has never ever gotten on the phone with me and said go make some calls, go call some clients. I’m in coaching because it’s all about leveling up my entire lifestyle. Some of the myths about coaching are that it’s just to have a cheerleader, it’s definitely not. It's a very high-level experience. There are people who believe in coaching, which I think you should have a coach, you should have a nutritionist, a stylist, a therapist, well everyone needs a therapist. Maybe just me. Anyways, I’m all about having specialists in your life to make your life better. Some of the reasons why I’m so obsessed with coaching is because they take a look at where you are in your world and they look at the blind spots, things that maybe you don’t necessarily see. And they look at how you can fix those or maybe adjust those or maybe just have an understanding or awareness of them. There’s never been an issue with me with being in real estate so long, 15 years with buyers or sellers. You know I don’t really have questions on how to deal with certain people. I’m very grateful to work with all the clients that I do and of course situations come up that are difficult but it’s all a negotiation and staying positive as I’ve done many videos about. But what has been so transformational in coaching is one, learning how to be a manager, and a boss, and a leader. And two, of three, changing who I am as a person. John Maxwell’s I think 12 Leadership Rules of Growth or something, 12 Laws of Growth? Irrefutable Growth? John Maxwell. That made me understand that to change your world and your success, you change yourself. Changing myself, my daily routine, my habits, everything that makes me me. And then also the people I’ve been introduced to through these coaching programs. So not only am I trying to be a better person and a better influence every day, but I’m learning how to level up in my business and how to grow and to work and inspire others to work with me and help my clients as well. My advice to everybody out there whoever asks should I get a coach? Heck yeah you should get a coach! And I’m so grateful for last week, we had such a transformational session with my coach and really digging into some things that I didn’t realize. And you don’t know what you don’t know, so unless you have someone that is there helping you along the way, it’s hard to know what to do next, which way to turn. It’s not a plan, it’s not a roadmap, but it’s just learning, how do I better communicate? How do I better serve? How do I better lead? How do I better make a culture where people want to come to work every day. Right? A lot of people, oh boohoo Monday or oh can’t wait for it to be Friday. If I ever said that, nobody would want to work with me, right? So this is a shout out today to all things KeriTV, in my world. I love to share about why I am the person I am, why I love working in real estate, why I love the people that are in my life, and I’m so grateful. So it’s not about who you coach with, I love Tom Ferry organization, I also love Steve Shull, I followed Zig Ziglar, I followed a bunch of Brian Buffini, all those people, but work with someone, get a group of people around you and go kick some butt! So thanks for watching today, KeriTV, see you guys next week! (music)

If you’d invested $1,000 in Netflix stock just a dozen years ago, you’d have $90,000 today – quite an extraordinary return from a company that fearlessly took on the Goliath, Blockbuster Video, and won – and today has 137 million customers worldwide. It wasn’t all that long ago that Netflix was shipping out a million DVD envelopes per day to its customers. But in a deft display of risk-taking and innovation, they pivoted away from DVDs and into on-line streaming. On top of that, they launched a production unit that developed the film, “Roma” nominated this year for the Academy Awards’ “Best Picture.” So how is it that any one company string together so many consistent wins in a row?  What kind of organizational culture could repeatedly evolve to seize every key opportunity they faced? As you’re about to hear from Netflix’s long-time Chief Talent Officer, Patty McCord, all of these achievements flowed from her company’s decision to implement a set of leadership practices that intentionally defied convention. In Patty’s new book, “Powerful: Building A Culture Of Freedom & Responsibility” (one of the Business Insider’s best business books of 2018), she describes the key elements of Netflix’s high performance culture.  While admitting that some of her company’s practices might not be a fit for every company, the key take-away from this interview is there are more things you’ll want to adopt than not. A truly electric and inspiring conversation that will challenge many of your assumptions about effective workplace management.

Companies rise and fall…on leadership. Governments rise and fall…on leadership. Any movement that’s trying to do something good rises and falls…on leadership. Here’s the reality: the strength of a nation…of a culture…of the whole human race rises and falls on the strength of it’s leaders.  Whether you’re the CEO of a multi-million dollar business or you’re just a dude with a 9-5 job who wants to fucking kill it at that 9-5 job, you have to learn to lead. There's no other way to be successful.
