John MacKenzie chats with Allan Benn from Kamerunga about his "letter to the editor" regarding crocodile management and human priorities. This is following reported sightings of a crocodile at the Redlynch Valley bridge just downstream from the popular Crystal Cascades swimming spot. Allan made local headlines in December 2022, when his daughter's dog was snatched by a saltie at the water's edge on Stoney Creek Road, at a place frequented by children and people fishing. Allan Benn is running in 2024 for the Cairns Regional Council's seat of division 6.

Today's poem is Letter to the Editor by Andrea Gibson. The Slowdown is your daily poetry ritual. In this episode, Major writes… “I am sappy when it comes to romance. I chalk it up to the R&B music of my youth, songs about longing that anchor tenderness as essential, and hone in on loneliness as the bluesy aftermath of love gone awry. Today's poem knows both that softness, and that messiness.” Celebrate the power of poems with a gift to The Slowdown today. Every donation makes a difference: https://tinyurl.com/rjm4synp

EPISODE 62: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:44) SPECIAL COMMENT: Voters would rather have cheap gas than the right to vote. Herschel Walker, lying abortion-funder and out-of-wedlock absentee father is the Man of God, not a pastor at Martin Luther King's church. The Congressional Progressive Caucus undermines the Democrats on Ukraine two weeks to the election. We know things ARE getting worse - but WHY are they getting worse? (2:40) Four answers: 1) 40+ years of Rush Limbaugh and imitators (4:00) 2) Individual moral turpitude, and blackmail (5:15) 3) The incompetence of the news media and the shortage of qualified reporters and analysts (9:15) 4) The ubiquity of platforms for anyone and everyone to become a political commentator and a political combatant when 30 years ago if you weren't in "the media" your choices were calling in to a talk show or writing a letter to the editor. B-Block (16:40) EVERY DOG HAS ITS DAY: Blaze in New York (17:50) POSTSCRIPTS TO THE NEWS: Debate-a-palooza. Never give them a viral moment, like Oz on abortion or Oz on the debate being just a "television show" or Zeldin and Dixon appearing soft on crime; Saudis reneged on an oil deal; we must make Prince Mohammed bin Bonesaw pay. (23:35) IN SPORTS: Retired Serena Williams says "I am not retired." For the first time since 1950 - 1950! - there will be NO African-American players in the World Series. (27:40) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Marco Rubio rushing to the aid of an injured...Charlottesville white nationalist buddy to Proud Boys? Doug Mastriano extolling the virtues of moving to Russia? They compete with the would-be Oklahoma Superintendent of Schools who wants to impose 'Christian Patriotic Education Training' on the state's public teachers. C-Block (32:39) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: It's 42 years ago this month when, as the Jimmy Carter-Ronald Reagan presidential election loomed, control of the 1,000-station radio network owned by the world's second largest news organization was left for eight hours entirely in the hands of a 21-year old sportscaster pressed into service because of a flu wave: ME. When teaching Structure and Style for Students, Andrew had each student hire an editor and deliver a letter that he had written to him or her. After all, every good writer has an editor. Andrew and Julie read the letter and discuss the role that editors play in helping students bring their finest pieces to publication. Andrew cautions against overcorrecting and instead recommends that editors focus on ensuring that the composition or essay is "legal." Last week Mr. Blake (not really his name, not of Floresville) regaled us with his “grass roots” opinion that we should be forced against our will to get the “vaccine.” The problem is Mr. Blake also submitted letters to more than 300 other local newspapers all over the country, each time claiming to be a resident of that small town or city. This is a coordinated campaign to mislead you, paid for by someone — pharmacy companies? Democrats? It would be interesting to find out. Each of these letters is...Article Link

Last year, we published a book that included 61 stories that were workshopped and presented at our live event. Putting together the book was a pretty unique experience that took a lot of organizing and communication.Due to, well, you know what, it seems some people have gotten around to working on that book they always wanted to write. Since we have already gone through the process, we decided to do a mini-series about our publishing journey. For the next few episodes, we’ll be going into how we communicated with 40 other authors, the editing process, book design and layout, and marketing. On this episode, the editor of the Stories We Don’t Tell book, Steve Hostetter, joins the crew to talk about his process, what it was like working with 40+ authors, and being a part of this very unusual publishing project.

SUPPORT OUR SPONSOR: audiblepodcast.com/thinkingatheistA listener on the TTA Facebook page recently asked Seth Andrews to respond to a "Letter to the Editor" posted in Seth's hometown paper, the Tulsa World. Usually, as skeptics, we let these kinds of posts slide, because they often don't accomplish much and/or they generate more trouble that they're worth. But in this case, Seth responded, and this show chronicles the exchange, the fallout, and the curious tactics of the indignant commenters who couldn't prove the god they were defending.Yes...it's a rant. (Gonna be one of those shows.) Enjoy.Sam Harris: An Atheist Manifesto: http://www.truthdig.com/dig/item/200512_an_atheist_manifesto

Reply to Kathman (Letter to the Editor); by William D. Pinkerton-Umlaut; From Volume XVI, Number 2, of Psammeticus Quarterly, February 1989 — Attn: Editors / I have never been so insulted as when I read Dave Kathman’s thoroughly unfounded attack on my work and character. I shall not even deign to defend my theories—any unbiased reader of my book will certainly see that they are well-founded and insightful. However, I must protest K’s depiction of my work as full of savage “ad hominem attacks”—but that’s the sort of unfounded charge you can expect from a self-important half-wit like K. An ego the size of his, when paired with a brain the size of a walnut, will naturally belittle that which it could never hope to understand. (Read by Trey Jones.)
The gang’s all here, as Rusty Shackles joins the whole show, including our interview with special guest James Lucas Jones, the editor-in-chief of Oni Press. He talks to us about his history with comics, hate mail to editors, and his feelings on the personality of Oni as a publishing house. Also, apparently the crew decided to get drunk for every other segment completely independently of each other.
This is my letter to the editor. I want to say I am shocked by your magazine. The article about lava and derived mesopotamian eagles is not accurate. I wanted to be sure you knew and did everything you could to correct that mistake.
