In this exciting episode, we dive into the world of Apple's newest iPad lineup. Buckle up as we explore the groundbreaking features, stunning designs, and jaw-dropping innovations that have tech enthusiasts buzzing. Let's break it down: 1. iPad Air: The Train Ride of Possibilities** - Picture yourself aboard a sleek train, gliding through a landscape of endless possibilities. The iPad Air, available in 11" and 13" sizes, lives up to the rumors with its Liquid Retina display. But that's not all—there's a front-facing camera on the landscape edge, perfect for video calls and capturing memories. - Immerse yourself in rich audio with landscape speakers featuring Spatial Audio and double the bass. Choose from four stylish colors: Blue, Purple, Starlight, and Space Grey. - The M2 Chip powers this beauty, while the Apple Pencil hovers, allowing you to see your strokes before they hit the screen. Starting storage options range from 128GB up to a whopping 1TB. And the price? A steal at $599 for the 11" and $799 for the 13". -- ### *2. iPad Pro: Crushing Expectations* - Imagine a compressor squashing doubts about the iPad Pro's capabilities. The new thin design form factor raises eyebrows (and concerns about bending), but the payoff is immense. - Available in 11" and 13", the iPad Pro boasts an OLED Display with not one but two OLED panels (tandem OLED). With 1000 nits of brightness and Ultra Retina XDR, it's a visual feast. Nano-texture glass minimizes glare. - Brace yourselves: the M4 chip is real! A 3NM powerhouse, it's 50% faster than the M2 and even supports ray tracing for intense gaming experiences. - Apple flexes its Neural engines, years ahead of the competition. AI enhancements abound, and Final Cut Pro gets an update (though LumaFusion fans remain loyal). - Starting at 256GB, the iPad Pro still yearns for that elusive second USB-C/Thunderbolt port. *3. Magic Keyboard & Apple Pencil: The Perfect Duo* - The new iPad Magic Keyboard is lighter and color-matched to your iPad. Function rows make creators cheer. - The Apple Pencil Pro introduces fresh gestures—squeeze and barrel roll to adjust brush size. Plus, it's now part of Find My. - Custom interactions and shortcuts enhance productivity. Yours for $129. *4. 10th Generation iPad: Affordable Excellence* - The 10th gen iPad drops to $349, making it accessible to all. A reliable workhorse with a price tag that won't break the bank. -- Join us as we dissect every detail, debate the pros and cons, and geek out over Apple's latest offerings. Whether you're a casual user or a tech aficionado, this episode has something for everyone. Tune in now!
Apple yesterday revealed its long-anticipated mixed reality headset, called Vision Pro, which the company describes as a spatial computer that merges digital content with the physical world. The pricey device will only be available next year in the US. Apple also announced a slew of other updates, including the M2 Ultra chip, new Mac computers and iOS 17. Meanwhile, Kerala has kicked off a project to bring free internet connections to the poor in the state, and at affordable rates to everyone else. A thousand households got connections upon inauguration yesterday, Manorama reports. Notes: Apple yesterday revealed its long-anticipated mixed reality headset, called Vision Pro, which the company describes as a spatial computer that merges digital content with the physical world. The headset can even display your eyes on its front-facing screen to show others if the headset wearer is fully immersed in something or looking at them, for example. Apple announced the headset at its annual worldwide developer conference that started yesterday. It features an ultra-high-resolution display system that uses micro-OLED to deliver 23 million pixels spread across two displays and a dual-chip design. With the headset, Apple also introduced visionOS, which again, Apple describes as a spatial operating system, enabling users to interact with digital content in a three-dimensional user interface controlled by natural inputs like eyes, hands, and voice. Vision Pro's design incorporates advanced materials and a compact wearable form factor, but also an external battery pack – about the size of an iPhone – that connects to the headset via a cable. It features a high-performance eye-tracking system and a Spatial Audio system for immersive sound. Privacy and security are prioritized, with features like Optic ID for secure authentication and privacy-focused eye tracking. The headset starts at $3,499 and will be available early next year in the US, with more countries to follow. On the silicon front, Apple, unveiled the M2 Ultra, at the opening of its worldwide developer conference, WWDC. M2 Ultra is a powerful new system on a chip (SoC) for Mac devices. The chip offers significant performance improvements and completes the M2 family, Apple said in a press release. Apple also announced a 15-inch MacBook Air, which features a large 15.3-inch Liquid Retina display, the M2 chip, up to 18 hours of battery life, and a six-speaker sound system. The laptop boasts a thin and light, fan-less design, making it the world's thinnest 15-inch laptop. In the US, the 15-inch MacBook Air is available for order, with shipping starting on June 13, and pricing starts at $1,299. Apple also announced the release of iOS 17, the next full update to its operating software for iPhones. The update includes some nifty upgrades to the Phone, FaceTime, and Messages apps, as well as new features like Journal and StandBy. Meanwhile, Kerala has become the first Indian state to provide high-speed internet access free of cost to the poor. Some 14,000 poor households and 30,000 government offices are soon to get these connections as part of its ambitious project, the Kerala Fibre Optic Network (KFON), Manorama reports. The initiative, launched in 2019, aims to provide internet connectivity to all of Kerala's 35 million citizens, with a particular focus on the 2 million individuals living in poverty. KFON, the first network of its kind in India, will be established across 35,000 km of optical fibre network spanning the state's 14 districts.

Apple yesterday released a new iPad with its A14 chip, and an iPad Pro running on its M2 processor. Microsoft is laying off some staff, Wall Street Journal reports, and the company is planning a new data centre in India, according to Economic Times. Cloud startup funding in Europe, the US and Israel fell significantly in the September quarter, global VC firm Accel said in a report. And electric scooter maker Ather Energy has raised more money. Notes: Apple yesterday introduced a new iPad with an all-screen design featuring a 10.9-inch Liquid Retina display. The new iPad runs on Apple's A14 Bionic chip, and the company promises all-day battery life. Apple yesterday also launched its new iPad Pro which is equipped with its most powerful processor, the M2 chip. The new iPads are available to order now, with availability in stores beginning Wednesday, Oct. 26. Microsoft laid off more employees this week, becoming the latest tech company to show signs of concern about future demand amid a global economic slowdown, Wall Street Journal reports. Meanwhile, Microsoft is planning to build a hyper scale data centre near the western Indian city of Pune, Economic Times reports. Facebook's parent Meta admitted defeat on Tuesday after Britain's competition regulators issued a final verdict ordering the company to sell Giphy, the animated image-making company it had acquired, CNBC reports. More than 40 European rivals to Google's shopping service urged EU antitrust regulators this week to use newly adopted tech rules to ensure that the internet search giant complies with a 2017 EU order to allow more competition on its search page, Reuters reports exclusively. Ather Energy, an electric scooter maker in Bangalore, has raised $50 million in a funding round led by its existing investor Caladium Investment, Economic Times reports, citing a company filing with the Registrar of Companies. Cloud startup funding in Europe, the US and Israel fell significantly in the September quarter, global VC firm Accel said in a report on its website yesterday. “If you look at the total capital raised by cloud companies in Europe, Israel and the US this year to date, there's not been a drastic change with total funding reaching $74 billion, just 12 percent lower than last year,” Accel's Philippe Botteri, Will Sheldon and Richard Kotite, said the report. “However, if you zoom in on Q3, the numbers show a very different picture with a sharp 42 percent decline,” they write, in the post, titled Accel 2022 Euroscape: Reset. Here comes the “Normal Computing” news of the week! What is “Normal Computing”? Stuff about Microsoft, Apple, Google, and the like. Big Tech. The “Big 5”. Mainstream. You know. “Normal”.Microsoft drops “Office” name… “Microsoft is now 365”In “well that's a dumb idea” news… Microsoft is officially killing off their “Microsoft Office” branding — which has been a cornerstone of the company for over 30 years — and renamed their office suite… “Microsoft 365”.As someone who worked on the Microsoft Office development team for many years, I have thoughts:* You use “Microsoft Office” to do “Office” stuff. What do you do with “Microsoft 365”? 365 stuff?* Everyone knows the “MS Office” brand. Ditching it is stupid.* The marketing and product executives at Microsoft clearly have too much time on their hands, and nothing to do.* In short: This is dumb.Apple makes new, colored iPads with USB-C“We're so excited to bring the completely redesigned iPad to our most advanced iPad lineup ever,” said Greg Joswiak, Apple's senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing. “With a large 10.9-inch Liquid Retina display, powerful A14 Bionic chip, a first-ever landscape front camera, fast wireless connectivity, USB-C, and support for incredible accessories like the new Magic Keyboard Folio, the new iPad delivers more value, more versatility — and is simply more fun.”Quick thoughts:* USB-C! Huzzah!* They moved the front facing camera to make it more logical. Good move.* Colors are cool. Reminds me of when the iMacs got multiple colors.* Strangely, it appears the stylus (Apple Pencil) is not USB-C. So it needs an adapter. Odd. This seems like it must be temporary.* Still no expandable storage.* Still no replaceable battery.Prices start at $449 (without the stylus or keyboard) and go up from there.GitHub Copilot InvestigationA new website has launched to collect stories of people who believe their licenses and copyrights have been violated by Microsoft's GitHub Copilot.“We're investigating a potential lawsuit against GitHub Copilot for violating its legal duties to open-source authors and end users.”“Microsoft and OpenAI must be relying on a fair-use argument. In fact we know this is so, because former GitHub CEO Nat Friedman claimed during the Copilot technical preview that “training [machine-learning] systems on public data is fair use”.Well—is it? The answer isn't a matter of opinion; it's a matter of law. Naturally, Microsoft, OpenAI, and other researchers have been promoting the fair-use argument. Nat Friedman further asserted that there is “jurisprudence” on fair use that is “broadly relied upon by the machine[-]learning community”. But Software Freedom Conservancy disagreed, and pressed Microsoft for evidence to support its position. According to SFC director Bradley Kuhn:”“[W]e inquired privately with Friedman and other Microsoft and GitHub representatives in June 2021, asking for solid legal references for GitHub's public legal positions … They provided none.”Firefox version 106 gets… sneaker features? The One-Hundred and Sixth major version of Firefox came out this week. What's new?* Editing PDF's within Firefox.* Text recognition from images (on macOS).* Swipe navigation on Linux. But the big feature that Mozilla is touting? They partnered with a sneaker maker to promote… feelings? Or colors? Or something?“‘Independent Voices' are the voices of the past and present that create a better future,” Lascio said. “I chose this as my inspiration for the collaboration because it feels authentic to me but it also aligns with Firefox and the vision that we can make the world better, on the internet and beyond.” - Keely Lascio, Street-wear and sneaker designerThis new feature lets you tell Firefox that you are… an… “Activist”… with a “balanced intensity”… which… makes… the window border… blue? Thanks to… sneakers? This is clearly what we call a “Killer Feature” of a web browser.Oh. And they also added “Firefox View”. Which nobody will ever use.Thank you for reading and listening to The Lunduke Journal of Technology. This post is public so feel free to share it. Just over a year ago, Apple announced the all new iPad Pro. Gone was the Home button and Touch ID, and the Lightning port. Thanos-snapped were half the bezels. In their place was a TrueDepth camera and Face ID, and a USB-C Port. All wrapped up in a modern, retro design. It was controversial at first because all that A12X power and Liquid Retina grace just felt so underserved by the iOS 12 feature set it shipped with. That was 2018. This is 2019. And, while the atoms have gone without an upgrade the bits have finally started coming into their own with iPadOS, an offshoot of iOS 13. We’ve even seen some discounts, a hundred or a couple bucks off the top, as we head into the holidays. So, have we gone from super high priced to slightly more affordable? More importantly, have we gone from bleeding-edge hardware limited by software to outdated hardware made functional at longest last? On the show this week @erfon / @lkahney / @lewiswallace 2018 iPad Pro review roundup: The best tablet money can buy https://www.cultofmac.com/588070/2018-ipad-pro-review-roundup/ Everyone is drooling all over the new iPad Pro Verge “Nothing is ever slow, and it always feels like there’s more headroom to work with. We were able to import several minutes of 4K footage into Adobe Premiere Rush, edit them, and export without breaking a sweat.” Pocket lint The new iPad Pro is “pretty much a laptop in terms of performance thanks to the new 7nm processor,” “Side-by-side with an iPad Pro 10.5 we have noticed a considerable difference in app loading times, certainly on processor intense apps like iMovie, Affinity Photo, Procreate, and games like Fortnite or Asphalt 9: Legends.” Wired “No apps or games I’ve used have been able to make the Pro break a sweat at all and benchmark numbers have been impressive,” adds Jeffrey van Camp of Wired. “By every measure I can think of, these are the best, most powerful, most capable iPads I’ve ever used. “It would be a total waste of $999 (or more) to use the iPad Pro 12.9 just for bingeing Netflix, but damn does this screen look good,” Wired also noted the new Liquid Retina screens are “gorgeous and packed with pixels.” “Color is vibrant and precise enough for Photoshopping and minute color tweaking if needed.” Verge Nilay Patel on lack of storage support: Like everything about the new iPad Pro, that USB-C connector is both remarkably powerful and incredibly frustrating,” writes Patel. “With one huge exception, most normal stuff you’d plug into a USB-C port works without fuss, and a bunch of other things work if you have an app that supports it … But one extremely important category of devices will definitely not work: iOS does not support external storage iOS 12 now the iPad's limiting feature. First USB-C hub for iPad Pro boasts ports for video, headphones, more https://www.cultofmac.com/588024/ipad-pro-usb-c-hub-hyperdrive-video-headphone-sd/ Just when I thought I’d seen it all, there is now a USB C hub that plugs right into the bottom of the iPad Pro Accessory-maker Hyper just unveiled a six-port USB-C hub for the new iPad Pro. 4K HDMI Port USB A Port SD and Micro SD card readers And an additional USB-C port so you can plug in an charge other USB C accessories 2018 MacBook Air review roundup: A beautifully big improvement https://www.cultofmac.com/588456/2018-macbook-air-review-roundup/ Verge “This laptop feels a lot nicer than the old MacBook Air,” “It fits the same size screen in a smaller body, but it’s not as thin or as light as the thinnest and lightest of laptops you can get today. When the first Air came out, it amazed everybody. This one, though very well-built, does not stand out from the pack when it comes to size or weight.” “This new MacBook Air is faster than the old MacBook Air, but not by the kind of margin you’d expect after three years,” TechCrunch “I once bought and returned the smaller MacBook, because it comes with a less powerful processor that slugged when I had too many browser tabs and apps open. The MacBook Air doesn’t have that issue,” says Haselton. CNBC “I appreciate the speed, but I wish Apple included its Face ID technology above the screen instead,” says Haselton. “I’m used to it on my iPhone XS Max, and there seems to be plenty of room above the display to fit the cameras required. Touch ID feels outdated There’s one big thing reviewers don’t like about the MacBook Air’s new look, though, and that’s the lack of connectivity. Just like the MacBook and MacBook Pro, the new Air does away with MagSafe, USB-A ports, and an SD card reader and replaces them with just two USB-C ports. Battery life on the new Air is 9.5 hours, about an hour less than the old MacBook Air. Confusing MacBook Air is slightly more powerful than the MacBook, but $100 less. MacBook is three quarters of a pound lighter than the MacBook Air. Both the MacBook and Air both get about 9.5 hours of battery life. The MacBook is thinner than the Air at it’s thickest point. Everything you can plug in to the new iPad Pro https://youtu.be/LykS0TRSHLY?t=285
Hear that? That was the sound of Apple snapping its fingers and killing half the bezels in its product universe. iPhone went first. Then Apple Watch. Then MacBook Air. Now, iPad Pro. (Somewhere out there, iMac is whispering, “I don’t feel so go…”) Edge-to-curved-edge Liquid Retina display in 12.5- or 11-inches, Face ID and True Depth Camera, A12X Bionic notebook-crushing processor, new Apple Pencil, and new Smart Keyboard Folio — this is the new iPad Pro. Apple has officially announced the iPhone XR, a new model that features a notched 6.1-inch LCD display and Apple’s Face ID system, similar to last year’s iPhone X. The new iPhone XR is a pretty significant upgrade for Apple, making the iPhone X’s design and features standard across the company’s latest line of phones. Apple is calling the 6.1-inch screen a “Liquid Retina” display, which offers a 1792 x 828 resolution at 326 PPI. That said, while the XR may look like a larger iPhone XS, there are a few compromises — the frame is aluminum, not stainless steel. There is IP67 water and dust protection, instead of the improved IP68 rating on the iPhone XS, and the screen is LCD, not OLED. There’s also no 3D Touch — instead, Apple is offering a new Haptic touch system, that offers similar feedback to the buttonless MacBook Pro trackpad. The iPhone XR features Apple’s latest A12 Bionic processor, just like the iPhone XS and XS Max — which Apple says offers improved speeds and performance over last year’s model, particularly for Apple’s “Neural Engine” AI processing. Despite its larger size, the iPhone XR features only a single rear camera, similar to the iPhone 8. The camera is a single 12-megapixel wide-angle camera — the same wide-angle camera as the XS. The single-camera does offer portrait mode, combining hardware and software to create the blurred background effect. As for the front-facing camera, it’s gotten an upgrade to Apple’s TrueDepth system from the iPhone XS, with a 7-megapixel sensor that allows for Face ID as well as features like portrait mode selfies, Animoji, and Memoji. It’s the same improved system as featured on the XS, with faster Face ID unlocking. On the battery life front, Apple is promising up to an hour and a half longer battery than the iPhone 8 Plus. The XR also will come in a variety of colors, with black, white, blue, coral, yellow, and red options available for the widest selection of chromatic choice since the iPhone 5C. But while the iPhone XR may feel like a less flashy version of the iPhone XS, it does come at a significant advantage: a much lower price. The iPhone XR starts at $749 for a 64GB model, with 128GB and 256GB models also available. Preorders will start on October 19th for the XR, which will ship a week later on October 26th.
