EPISODE 75 - “MEHAR BABA BRINGS SPIRITUALITY TO OLD HOLLYWOOD” - 2/17/2025 During the 1920s and 1930s, a spiritual movement swept through Hollywood. It seems the Hollywood elite were about more than just speakeasies, flappers, and decadence. Some were searching for inner-peace and often found it -- at least temporarily -- in these various religious movements that popped up. One spiritual leader who came to prominence was India's MEHAR BABA, who believed that spirituality and metaphysics were interconnected. Stars like MARY PICKFORD, TALLULAH BANKHEAD, and MARIE DRESSLER were admirers. And when Baba visited Hollywood in May of 1932, you'll never believe where he stayed! Get enlightened and listen to this fascinating story of spirituality in Hollywood.  SHOW NOTES:  Sources: The God Man (1964), by C.B.Purdom; Mehar Baba, www.meharcenter.org “Mehar Baba: A Brief Biography,” www.avatarmeharbabatrust.org; “Pete Townsend Speaks of Mehar Baba,” www.petetoensend.net; “Mehar Baba: The Compassionate Father,” www.ramdass.org; “Highest of the High: Full Message By Mehar Baba with Introduction,” YouTube, com; Wikipedia.com; Movies Mentioned:  The Devil and the Deep (1932); starring Tallulah Bankhead, Gary Cooper, Charles, Laughton, & Cary Grant; Love Me Tonight (1932), starring Maurice Chevalier, Jeanette MacDonald, Charles Ruggles, & Myrna Loy; Grand Hotel (1932), starring Greta Garbo, John Barrymore, Joan Crawford, Lionel Barrymore, Wallace Beery, & Lewis Stone; --------------------------------- http://www.airwavemedia.com Please contact sales@advertisecast.com if you would like to advertise on our podcast. Gurdip was really feeling the season, so in between prepping for next week's meaty episode with Ryan on "On Stage 1970", Justin and Gurdip had a breezy little classic TCBCast-style discussion about the Elvis songs that evoke memories or give them vibes of warm summer days.  The guys also quickly tackle two Songs of the Week, with Gurdip giving "Once is Enough" from "Kissin' Cousins" the second chance he feels it deserves, and Justin simmering with the understated (and oft-overlooked) Don Robertson-penned ballad "Love Me Tonight" from the early 1963 sessions that should have led to a studio album (later known as The Lost Album or For the Asking), but instead the song was buried as a bonus on the soundtrack for "Fun in Acapulco." In this episode, I spoke with author Kurt Jensen about his book "Peerless Rouben Mamoulian, Hollywood, and Broadway.  A proud Armenian who claimed a distant link to nobility, born in what was then part of czarist Russia, Rouben Mamoulian (1897–1987) was one of the most astonishing and confounding figures in American film and theater, directing the original stage productions of Porgy and Bess, Carousel, and Oklahoma!, as well as films including Love Me Tonight, Queen Christina, City Streets, and Silk Stockings. He was famously fired from the film version of Porgy and Bess in a dispute over publicity and quit Cleopatra after arguments over a single scene. Mamoulian's mercurial confidence and autocratic tendencies were among the reasons he had a reputation for being uncompromising. This frustrating mix of genius and stubbornness, of critical successes and financial flops, has proven challenging for biographers.

Synopsis Today's date marks the premiere in New York City, in 1925, of a classic operetta “The Vagabond King” by Rudolf Friml, the source of many once-popular sentimental tunes, including “Love Me Tonight,” and “Only a Rose.” Friml was born in Prague in 1879, and he studied composition there with no less a master than Antonin Dvorak. He started his career as a piano accompanist to the famous Czech violinist Jan Kubelik, then emigrated to the U.S. in 1906. In 1907, he appeared as a soloist in his own First Piano Concerto with the New York Symphony, and decided to make America his home. Friml wrote two piano concertos, a symphony, solo piano pieces — and three film scores for Hollywood. But he's remembered today chiefly for 24 stage works, beginning in 1912 with “The Firefire,” his first big musical success, and continuing with many others, including the 1924 operetta “Rose Marie” – which in 1936 was made into a successful film starring Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy. Their rendition of Friml's “Indian Love Call” has become a campy cult classic. Even Friml was occasionally embarrassed by the success of some of his flufflier pop works, and would publish some of these under the pseudonym of Roderick Freeman. He died in Los Angeles in 1972, aged 92. Music Played in Today's Program Rudolf Friml (1879-1972): Song of the Vagabonds, from The Vagabond King –Eastman-Dryden Orchestra: Donald Hunsberger, cond. Perhaps the greatest challenge in writing about Cincinnati's up-and-coming singer Bla'szé is attempting to describe her style. Last year, Bla'szé performed at the Cincinnati Entertainment Awards and was nominated in the “R&B/funk/soul” category. Yet, even combining three genres isn't quite enough to describe Bla'szé. “I love to do all types of music,” she said during her WCPO Lounge Acts appearance at Northside Yacht Club. “Whatever I'm feeling in the moment, that's what it's going to be,” Bla'szé said casually, seemingly unimpressed by her own versatility. “If I want to rap, I'm probably going to rap. If I want to sing a little more, I'm going to sing a little more.” As talented as she is at singing, Bla'szé first pursued a dance career at the University of Cincinnati's College Conservatory of Music where she graduated in 2013 with her bachelor in fine arts in ballet. When injury sidelined her dance prospects, she turned her focus to singing. “Being in ballet is really what I need to get the confidence to perform in front of people,” she said. Bla'szé continued building her confidence on her recent debut album, “Energy.” It's an album that Bla'szé said helped in “realizing the confidence I have to tell my story.” The story “Energy” tells is not a linear one. It begins with the super-chill good-time R&B-style “Good Vibes,” bounces right into the rather explicit rap track “Everybody Like Me,” and then into the dance-pop single “Love Me Tonight.” Somehow, Bla'szé blends these genres fluidly around herself to shape a style of her very own. As an audience, we're left with only one word to describe Bla'szé's style of music: everything. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Before musicals ruled Hollywood, an unknown filmmaker named Rouben Mamoulian was making movies like City Streets (1931) and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1931), both of which were successful exercises in inventive new types of camerawork and storytelling.  With Love Me Tonight (1932), Mamoulian tried his hand at a musical romantic comedy, and proved surprisingly successful. Starring Maurice Chevalier and Jeanette MacDonald, Love Me Tonight is a twisted little musical romantic comedy which, while predictable, bends the envelope when you least expect it.  It's practically forgotten now, but the talent behind it can still be appreciated 85 years later. A finalist in the CMAA Golden Guitar Awards for ‘Best New Talent’ 2015, with multiple hit singles to her credit, Christie has gained critical recognition and With the release of her debut album ‘All She Wrote’ Christie undeniably announced her presence on the Australian Country Music scene. Following a sold out album launch in Sydney, Christie’s album hit #1 on the Aria Hit Seekers Album Chart (All Genres) and #2 on the ARIA Australian Artist Country Chart. The four subsequent single releases to radio spurned two #1 hit singles and two top 5 hit singles; ‘Wish You Were A Cowboy’ retained the #1 spot for five weeks, whilst ‘All She Wrote’ also hit #1 for 3 weeks. ‘Manhunt’ hit #3, and ‘Love Me Tonight’ hit top 5 on Australian Country Radio. All of the singles also made top 10 on The Music Network Chart, with ‘All She Wrote’ reaching the top 5. This sassy young lady's win with her track ‘Love Me Tonight’ at the APRA supported Songs Alive Australia Song Comp for ‘Pop Song of The Year’. We will talk to Christie about her upcoming schedule, get a behind the scenes look at her music, feature her latest songs, and ask her to share her message for the troops. Having just experienced one heckuva blues festival at the in Wheeling WV, I've decided to feature many of the artists that were there! Bruce Wheeler (Festival Director) and his family really outdo themselves every year! Bruce did a fantastic job of selecting some great music and that's why Show #78 is called “Bruce's Blues”! Well, we started off the show with with Let Me Love You! Following Magic, we'll hear from , Car Troubles; , Mississippi Flatland Blues; , The Devil Had A Woman; , Going Down to the River; , Fishin' Hole; , Black John; , See You Hurt No More; w/ John Nemeth, Who's the Fool; , Kokomo Blues; , Love Me Tonight; , Flashback; and wrapping up with the IBC Albert King Guitar Award winning playing Low Dirty Deal! A special thanks to all the independent artists, the signed artists, the promoters, and the record labels for the ongoing support in the BluzNdaBlood Show, your first stop for the best in the blues! Also special thanks to Michael Allen, from the for his ongoing support in allowing me to use his incredible artwork on my show and web sites! This show's artwork is courtesy of Daniel Baird, who now owns a sign making business. He created the banner that was presented to Bruce and also is used for this show! Check out the details in the banner! There's a great panoramic view of the Wheela venue! Be sure to swing by the home page! There are hyperlinks to all the great music that you hear on my show! Remember to send in your favorite blues artists that you would like me to play on an upcoming “By Request” show! I need your help! Enjoy the show and keep in touch! I can be found at , , and !
