Why Branding is Pharma's Most Undervalued Asset

In this episode of Pharmaceutical Executive's podcast series Leading Edge With Ken Banta, The Vanguard Network founder and CEO is joined by branding strategist Andy Milligan, founding partner of The Caffeine Partnership, where the duo examine why life sciences companies urgently need to rethink how they build, protect, and communicate their brands. From the erosion of trust in pharma to the disconnect between scientific innovation and patient experience, the discussion surfaces a core challenge: companies must evolve beyond product-centric messaging to patient-centric storytelling and emotional connection. The conversation also probes the unique tensions in healthcare — where cost, value, and trust collide — and outlines how leaders can retool brand engagement across stakeholders, including physicians, patients, payers, and investors. Highlights of the discussion with Michael Christel, MJH Life Sciences group managing editor, include: - Relevance + consistency = brand durability. Milligan underscores that strong brands evolve with customers while maintaining a clear, consistent identity — something many biopharma companies struggle to balance. - Trust is pharma's defining — and fragile — currency. From pricing scrutiny to commercialization skepticism, the industry faces a persistent trust gap that branding must actively address. - The science-to-experience disconnect. While early-stage innovation earns high trust, that credibility often erodes at commercialization, creating a messaging challenge around value, cost, and access. - Storytelling as a strategic lever, especially in rare disease. Patient-centric narratives and simpler, more emotive messaging can bridge gaps across stakeholders and strengthen engagement across the care journey. Milligan advises CEOs and senior management teams on strategies for developing and exploiting brands and growing their business. He is a regular speaker at conferences internationally and has made frequent appearances in media, including on BBC, Sky, and CNN. Milligan has also published six best-selling books.

A special interview here for a few reasons:This one is in-person so it has a completely different feel, dynamic and I have to admit, I LOVED it. Definitely inspiring me to do more in-person interviews with local colleagues. My guest (Web Designer Pro member Andy Milligan) just took his agency to 200k+ in revenue in 2025 from 30k in 2024. So massive growth, however, it came at a cost. We dig into the stressful side of quick success. Andy asked awesome questions and we got into some topics I've never discussed publicly. Hats off to him for becoming such a great, thoughtful interviewer and host!Lastly, I should note that I was coming off of a wicked sickness when we recorded so I was not even close 100% but alas, with 3 littles under 7 at home, it's the usual story during winter

This week Josh and Drusilla watch the 1940's banger by Carl Theodor Dreyer, Day of Wrath. From wiki: “Day of Wrath (Danish: Vredens dag) is a 1943 Danish drama film directed by Carl Theodor Dreyer and starring Lisbeth Movin, Thorkild Roose and Preben Lerdorff Rye. It is an adaptation of the 1909 play Anne Pedersdotter by Hans Wiers-Jenssen, based on a 16th century Norwegian case. The film tells the story of a young woman who is forced into a marriage with an elderly pastor after her late mother was accused of witchcraft. She falls in love with the pastor's son and also comes under suspicion of witchcraft.”Also discussed: food poisoning, Shrill, Seeds, the work of Andy Milligan, Mindhunter, The Perfect Neighbor, and more. NEXT WEEK: In a Violent Nature (2024)Bloodhaus:https://www.bloodhauspod.com/https://www.instagram.com/bloodhauspod/https://letterboxd.com/bloodhaus/Drusilla Adeline:https://www.sisterhydedesign.com/https://letterboxd.com/sisterhyde/https://www.instagram.com/sister__hyde/Joshua Conkelhttps://www.joshuaconkel.com/https://www.instagram.com/joshua_conkel/https://letterboxd.com/JoshuaConkel/

On this week's episode, I welcome in Andy Milligan to explore the art of entrepreneurship and personal growth. I help startups and small marketing teams improve the design and strategy of their website through redesign sprints, audits, and strategy sessions. My story isn't super glamorous, but the theme is consistent in that I always show up and learn the next step along the way. After playing college golf at Methodist University and transferring, I joined a small marketing team at the University of Findlay, where I started taking on freelance projects, unpaid, for small businesses locally. That experience introduced me to design, branding, doing it on the job and I quickly became obsessed with this concept of how design could drive real business results and seeing it firsthand. After graduation, I landed a job as a marketing designer near Columbus, Ohio, but after a layoff, I went all in on building my own business. That was coming up two years ago and I haven't looked back or had another job since.I got started like most people do, saying yes to freelance gigs I probably wasn't ready for. But with each project, I got sharper: better strategy, better systems, and a much clearer sense of what I actually bring to the table from a design standpoint, and it led me to slowly niche down into websites and design strategy.Along the way, I also launched Marketing by Design, my podcast where I talk with marketers, founders, and creatives about how to do this work in a way that actually feels sustainable and effective. It's been a way to connect with people I admire, sharpen my thinking, and build trust with others in the space. I started posting on Linkedin every day since the layoff, and it's been a huge reason as to why I'm able to make the business work and meet my goals.Right now, I'm based in Springfield, Ohio, working from a quiet apartment studio that gives me time to focus, reflect, and get better at what I do. I'm currently the VP of membership for the AMA Columbus chapter and involved with the Columbus Chamber of Commerce. I spend at least 2 days per week doing in-person meetings with clients or other marketers in Columbus, and my time is spent between fulfillment of client projects and content.

The Ghastly Ones (1968), The Man with Two Heads (1972), and Carnage (1984) There are not many filmmakers like Andy Milligan. Sure, there were a lot of no-budget independents during Milligan's era that somehow got their finished pictures to play theaters and released on home video. But there weren't many whose real life was almost as terrifying as the films they made. But Andy Milligan would fit neatly into that category. Making over 30 pictures in almost 25 years, with some of the most outrageous and memorable titles, he still remains very close to obscurity. But he does have some fans out there. In fact, in September of 2021, Severin Films released The Dungeon of Andy Milligan, a box set that included over a dozen of his films, packed with extras. As that set has lived on fan's shelves for a while now, it seemed a good time to take a look into this strange filmmaker and three of his films. But a warning... his films are not for everyone. Some quirky critics refer to them as high school stage plays that were filmed. They can be mean. Talky. Bizarre camerawork. And pretty shoddy makeup. Nonetheless, they still have a charm to them… to some fans, at least. So take your next steps with caution, and as the saying goes, "Well... we warned you." Films mentioned in this episode: Blood (1973), Bloodthirsty Butchers (1970), The Body Beneath (1970), Carnage (1984), Depraved (1967), The Degenerates (1967), Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1932), Dr. Jekyll vs. The Werewolf (1972), Edge of Sanity (1989), Frankenstein (1931), The Ghastly Ones (1968), House of Seven Belles (1979), Legacy of Blood (1978), Mad Ron's Prevues from Hell (1987), The Man with Two Heads (1972), Pelvis (1977), The Promiscuous Sex (1967), The Rats Are Coming! The Werewolves Are Here! (1972), Torture Dungeon (1969)

It can be fun talking shop and spilling the tea about others in your industry, but people outside your industry are not always as interested. Having said that, we *are* going to talk a little inside baseball about branding, marketing and websites — focusing as always on what that means for owners and founders. We want to provide practical takeaways from a brand expert's point of view. That's what we're going to discuss on this episode of The Brandtelling Podcast. We will call out Spoiler Territory so if you want to skip ahead from that point in Tokyo Drifter, you can rejoin the conversation at the 1:15:44 mark to avoid spoilers, and for Seeds, Spoiler Territory ends at 1:55;46. Two terrific guests on this episode, lordy. There is a new book out called The Exotic Ones, which tells the take of filmmaking duo Ron and Julie Ormond. They were contemporaries of Ed Wood and their story is every bit as bizarre. The book was written by the legendary Jimmy McDonogh, who wrote The Ghastly One about Andy Milligan. He's also written biographies of Russ Meyer, Tammy Wynette, Neil Young and more. Jimmy McDonough is here today in all his psychotronic glory. And then we have our resident film critic Katharine Coldiron to further unpack the Ormond oeuvre but also to discuss her new book, Junk Film, Why Bad Movies Matter. True tales From Weirdsville is going to take you down to rabbit hole to uncover all things Kenneth Anger, and there is, as always, so much more.

Au cinéma, on va voir Titanic ou Men in Black. Myths of Branding: Dispel the Misconceptions and Become a Brand Expert by Andy Milligan and Simon Bailey About the Book: A brand is just a logo - everyone knows that, don't they? After all, it's not as though a good brand can save a bad business, and besides, the digital revolution is making branding irrelevant... Myths of Branding, written by renowned branding experts Andy Milligan and Simon Bailey, explores the huge number of misguided, mistaken, and blatantly false myths that abound in the branding arena. From the belief that developing brands is nothing more than fiddling with logos to the perception that it's a 'soft' area of marketing that doesn't go beyond visual identity and that the customer is always right - these myths are all surprisingly entrenched, yet could not be further from the truth. Myths of Branding uses up-to-date case studies and witty examples to debunk these popular misconceptions and replaces them with the reality of what it's really like to work in the world of branding. Jam-packed with entertaining anecdotes and useful information that practitioners can learn from, it guarantees a deeper, sharper understanding of the realities of branding and brand management. The best film you've never heard of from the best director you've never heard of.Directed by Andrew Repasky McElhinney Starring Marj Dusay, Oliver Wyman and Margot White How is the world wrong about A Chronicle of Corpses? From Bryan: When I first saw this movie I was floored. It's Andy Milligan by way of Kubrick. Masterfully constructed, this is easily one of the best films of the 21st Century thus far. Yet nobody knows about it or has ever heard about it. I try to share this one with anyone who loves cinema, but feels like they've hit a wall with finding new challenging stuff. Brilliant. Brilliant.
