This is a re-airing of episode 284. New episodes return on Monday, August 14th. Michael Bungay Stanier: The Coaching Habit Michael Bungay Stanier is the author of eight books, including The Coaching Habit*, which has sold more than a million copies and is the best-selling book on coaching this century. In 2011 he created and edited End Malaria, a book written in partnership with Seth Godin that raised more than $400k for Malaria No More. Michael is the founder Box of Crayons, a learning and development company that's trained thousands of people around the world to be more coach-like. He has been featured in many publications including Harvard Business Review, Forbes, and Fast Company. His TEDx Talk on Taming Your Advice Monster has been viewed more than a million times. Key Points When things get difficult, there are three roles people may fall into: the victim, the persecutor, and/or the rescuer. To step out of a victim role, figure out what's really going on, take a deep breath, and think, “And what else?” To avoid the persecutor role, assume positive intent and that people are trying their best. To stop rescuing as much, ask the victim, “How can I help?” or “What do you want from me?” Ask yourself what you want in the situation, and make sure you've communicated it to others. Then ask the others what they want. Michael Bungay Stanier: How to Work with (Almost) Anyone Michael Bungay Stanier is the author of eight books, including The Coaching Habit, which has sold more than a million copies and is the best-selling book on coaching this century. Most recently he wrote How to Begin, and back in 2011 he created and edited End Malaria, a book written in partnership with Seth Godin that raised more than $400k for Malaria No More. Michael's newest book is How to Work with (Almost) Anyone: Building the Best Possible Relationship*. Most leaders recognize the critical nature of healthy, peer relationships. Yet, few leaders lay an intentional foundation for success as those relationships start. In this episode, Michael and I discuss how to start with peers using the five questions in a Keystone Conversation. Key Points Nobody really like to say hello but everyone likes to be greeted. Make a decision to be the person that begins. Preparing thoughtful responses to the five questions in a Keystone Conversation will help you come to a dialogue in an authentic and vulnerable way. The responses themselves aren't as critical as the process itself. By entering into a keystone conversation, you are laying the foundation for future dialogue and the best possible relationship. The five questions of a Keystone Conversation: The Amplify Question: What's your best? The Steady Question: What are your practices and preferences? The Good Date Question: What can you learn from successful past relationships? The Bad Date Question: What can you learn from frustrating past relationships? The Repair Question: How will you fix it when things go wrong? This past March 20th the United Nation's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) published its fourth and last sixth assessment cycle (AR6) report. This last report integrates the main findings of the IPCC's three, sixth assessment working group reports published over the past 18 months. The report has been informally termed the “last warning” since the IPCC 7th assessment work will likely not be published until after 2030 - at which time we'll know whether we have succeeded or not in reducing CO2e emissions by approximately 45% in order to limit avg global warming to the preferred Paris climate accord goal of 1.5C. Among other conclusions the IPCC authors warned, “There is a rapidly closing window of opportunity to secure a livable and sustainable future for all.” “The choices and actions implemented in this decade will have impacts now and for thousands of years.” The UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, termed this last report “a clarion call to massively fast-track climate efforts by every country, every sector and on every timeframe.” An excellent summary of the AR6 fourth report was published in late March by Carbon Brief, at: https://www.carbonbrief.org/carbon-briefs-definitive-guide-to-the-entire-ipcc-sixth-assessment-cycle/.This 35-minute interview Ms. Willis discusses Malaria No More's work, related/relevant IPCC findings and those in context of her attendance last month at a climate/health summit meeting in Abu Dhabi held in preparation for subsequent related discussions during this coming December's IPCC COP 28 meeting also taking place in the UAE. Ms. Willis has more than 20 years of experience working in infectious disease and global health, helping to build permanent capacity in health systems throughout sub-Saharan Africa and Southeast Asia, in roles including Senior Vice President at United States Pharmacopeia, Executive Director of Accordia Global Health Foundation and through her consulting firm Willis Solutions LLC. Ms. Willis's field experience includes several years living in East Africa where she helped launch and support the Infectious Diseases Institute at Makerere University and led a multi-year research program to better understand the impact of medical training programs on standards of care and health outcomes. Prior to that, Ms. Willis spent five years in multiple finance and economics management roles at Pfizer where she also served as a Global Health Fellow in Uganda. Fred Matser is the Founder of the Fred Foundation and has been professionally helping others for over 40 years. We look back at his work and talk about his documentary 'Beyond Me'. You can watch Fred's documentary and find out more about his book here: https://www.beyondmedocumentary.org/en/ Guest Introduction: Fred has made it his life's work to help. Over the past 40 years he has been involved in helping people grow their projects, organisations, initiatives and social impact companies to change this world for the better. Healthcare, Education, Environment, Climate Change, Peace Building – there is no subject that Fred and his organisation the Fred Foundation have not touched. And the list of those he has supported throughout the years is endless Mentioning all of their names (Red Cross, Jane Goodall Institute, Malaria No More, The Chopra Foundation, Green Cross, WNF and hundreds, hundreds more) would take us a podcast in and of itself. So we won't do that. What I find more fascinating is how Fred helps . Because when you take a closer look at all the beautiful things that have come into existence because of Fred Matser, I see one thing clearly come to the forefront: Personal Ignition. Fred's support (financial, advisory and operational) allows great social entrepreneurs not only to start building on their ideas but also ensures that they will thrive and become sustainable. The Fred Foundation does not only look at the ideas but also clearly at the person who has them and how he/she should be assisted to thrive. Understanding the person is core to Fred's approach and philosophy. Even though you will always discover elements of Fred's business background, running one of the biggest commercial real estate development companies in the Netherlands, he will make it a priority to genuinely get to know the person. It is almost like that through helping, Fred is on a quest to understand us human beings in the most profound sense of the word. And I am so happy that after 40 years of practical research he has now made it a priority to share many of his observations to ensure that any support, assistance or aid will have genuine long lasting effects. “Let's try to compare with care in order to share with care“ - he says in the beautifully made documentaryBeyond Me that was launched just last May. I have the great privilege of knowing Fred already for more than a decade and have to say that engaging and debating with him is an exceptional experience and a beautiful journey. Many have praised Fred but I think the former Soviet leader Mihail Gorbachev says it the best and the simplest when saying that: “Fred is a man with a big and open heart. He is making the world better” Fred welcome!

In 2018, leaders of the Commonwealth countries pledged to reduce malaria cases by half by 2023. One year on, what has been done to try and achieve that aim?Malaria No More held a panel in London to try and answer that very question.
To take a look at where we are in the fight against malaria, I’m joined by Michal Fishman of Malaria No More. She’s co-chairs the RBM Partnership to End Malaria, which brings together organisations to reduce malaria cases.
Malaria No More has just launched a petition, with David Beckham as its figurehead. The petition aims to get the attention of world leaders ahead of critical funding decisions for The Global Fund. But this petition is not asking for signatures or for your email address, it wants your voice, and for you to recording yourself saying ‘Malaria Must Die’. To learn more, I’m joined by Dr Elvis Eze, who is part of the campaign.
Michael Bungay Stanier is the author of several books, including The Coaching Habit and Do More Great Work. Michael has written for or been featured in numerous publications including Business Insider, Fast Company, Forbes, The Globe & Mail and The Huffington Post. Michael is giving away two The Coaching Habit to CanInnovate listeners. So be sure to tune in and send me an email or comment down below. Episode Overview: A sought-after speaker, Michael regularly speaks to businesses and organizations and has delivered keynotes at Leadership, HR and Learning & Development, conferences around the world, including ATD, SHRM, IPL, HRPA and the Conference Board of Canada. Balancing out these moments of success, Michael was banned from his high school graduation for “the balloon incident,” was sued by one of his Law School lecturers for defamation, and his first published piece of writing was a Mills & Boone short story called “The Male Delivery.” Michael left Australia 25 years ago to be a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford University, where his only significant achievement was falling in love with a Canadian, which is why he now lives in Toronto, having spent time in London and Boston. He was the first Canadian Coach of the Year. Michael explains why the manager only needs 7 good questions that transforms your leadership game on his book, The Coaching Habit. “For the simplicity on this side of complexity, I wouldn't give you a fig. But for the simplicity on the other side of complexity, for that I would give you anything I have.” - Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. For the teachings that Michael does, he tries to strive for that simplicity and he thinks that so often we over complicate things. Michael is all about making things simple, practical and doable. For normal people, coaching is a little but weird because some people are being traumatized by their coaches. For Michael, coaching is a very powerful leadership behavior to get the best out of people, get the best out of yourself and to have more impact in the work that you are doing. Part of the question that he usually ask is what is the least he can teach people and what is the least people need to have the most impact into the work they need. “Spend less time asking people what to do and more times asking good questions.” If you interact with other human beings in your life learning to be more coach-like which in the end is, can you beat yourself a little bit longer? Can you rush for action and give advice a little bit more slowly? Being a coach-like can be a little bit different for everybody. “Most of us are advice giving maniacs” Michael discovered that people advice is not nearly as good as they think it is because. The advice they have isn't solving the right problem The advice they have isn't that good of a solution People preferred to figure this stuff out themselves and come up with their own ideas and their own advice Michael also talked about the And what else... And what else, comes with an insight that a person answer to your first question is never there only answer and it rarely gets the best to answer. And what else is also a great management tool if you're going to slow down the rush to advice, asking and what else is a way of controlling your advice monster who is waiting for a leap of action that is trying to solve the problem and save the day. And you want to return this advice monster. If you are saying yes to this, what are you saying no to? Michael’s strategy question in the book says: When you think about innovation and you think about the challenges that brings with it so much of what great innovation is about and being clear to what the no's are so you can say yes to the stuff that really matters. Every time you say yes you are rolling out a bunch of things that you can do instead of finding the things that you really want to do. What is ghost coaching (Coaching the Ghost) The difference between bad, good and great work and how to leverage it The benefits about giving less advice and staying curios longer Should you get a coach when you are stuck in a rut? Michael says that you should not get a coach immediately. If getting a coach works for you financially and how will you can commit, that would be really powerful. But there are also passive voice that you can get unstuck. Tips on how to get unstuck. An accountability partner Hire a coach Read a book I have made worksheet to help you get unstuck in a rut. Click here to download worksheet. Michael's Do Great Work book provides 15 very specific exercises to help you understand what great work is. "The inspiration in your past suddenly make sense" Sometimes seeking out other people's advice it is a way of detecting from you going away from understanding what's my real challenge what am i going to do about it and how am i going to take this on. "Everything that you do in work or in life is forge into one or two different buckets" And on sudden points you have to move away from collecting advice and you have to move into taking responsibility take your best jazz and move things on. Michael Bungay Stanier is my guest on this week’s episode of my podcast. He is the author of many books including Do More Great Work and, his latest, The Coaching Habit. Michael’s company, Box of Crayons, help organizations to do less good work and more great work. What does Bring Your Whole Self to Work Mean to Michael? Michael references the insights in the book The Dark Side of the Light Chasers by Debbie Ford and how the ‘I Am That’ process allows a person to acknowledge all that they are and show up as their whole person. He says there is something about understanding how you are different in this world and doubling down on what makes you unique. Embracing Discomfort Balancing tension is hard. There is a fine line between strategy and guessing. Michael says to experiment in a way that limits risks is the way forward. He observes that most people don’t wrestle long enough with questions and they will generally default to safety. An Inspiring Project In Michael’s book, Do More Great Work, he advocates having a great work project. A project a person can pour all of their creativity, energy and resources into. He knew he had to have a project of his own. He wanted to have a bold impact and considered what was the cheapest unit of change at a global level. He brought thought leaders and other intriguing people together to write articles on how to access great work. And, then along with The Domino Project and Seth Godin, he published End Malaria a book which, when purchased, sends a donation to Malaria No More to purchase mosquito nets for families in need. Keeping Things in Perspective Michael believes that we sometimes take ourselves a bit too seriously, which ends up stressing us out and burdening us with unnecessary pressure. He thinks we should embrace all of who we are, even and especially the stuff that’s weird about us. This frees us up to do more great work and to not be so attached to the outcome. In this episode, best selling author, Michael Bungay Stanier and I have an in-depth discussion about his latest book entitled The Coaching Habit: Say Less, Ask More & Change the Way You Lead Forever. Michael provides a rich insight into the power of questioning and the role it plays in empowering those around us. Although Michael’s work is deeply rooted and directed toward the corporate world, there is excellent takeaway value for all educators who listen to this podcast. Great teaching is all about asking great questions. The themes of staying curious, the importance of reflection, and being more comfortable with silence are also explored during this episode to emphasize just how critical a role they play in helping to construct a meaningfully rich learning environment for our students. There is no doubt that you will find immediate takeaway value in this podcast with Michael Bungay Stanier. Welcome to episode #509 of Six Pixels Of Separation - The Mirum Podcast. Here it is: Six Pixels Of Separation - The Mirum Podcast - Episode #509 - Host: Mitch Joel. There's a reason Michael Bungay Stanier's first book, Do More Great Work, has sold close to 100,000 copies. It's small, but do not let the size of it fool you. If you're stuck. If you're not sure if you're focusing on what's important. You need to read that book. I don't even know how many copies of that book I have passed along to friends and colleagues. Then, Michael asked me to be one of the participants in a compilation book called, End Malaria. All proceeds from the book went to the Malaria No More charity (and that was close to $500,000), while the book wound up hitting #2 on Amazon (plus, it was published on Seth Godin's The Domino Project imprint). Well, Michael does a lot more than publish books that become movements. He spends the bulk of his day running Box Of Crayons - a consultancy to help time-crunched managers do less good work and much more great work. Over the years, he's learned a thing or two. With that, he's back with a brand new book, The Coaching Habit, that has some thoughts on how we can get the best out of ourselves (whether we're coaching someone, coaching ourselves or getting coached). Humanity is winning the fight against Malaria, but we still have a long way to go. Since the advent of the Global Fund, the Millennium Development Goals and the President's Malaria Initiative, death and illness rates have dropped precipitously around the globe. Now, talk of total worldwide eradication is not as preposterous as it may seem. This is the message that Martin Edlund of Malaria No More has for the policy community ahead of World Malaria Day on April 25. Despite the progress, though, he argues that there are still big challenges ahead -- particularly the spread of drug resistant Malaria in the Mekong Delta. This is a great episode for anyone who wants to learn why a disease that haunted humanity for millennia is now on the ropes.
Interview with Josh Tabb, the Global Digital Strategist for Malaria No More. We discuss how they use web and text messaging data to fight the spread of malaria in Aftrica.
Esther Havens is a humanitarian photographer capturing stories that transcend a person's circumstances and reveal their true strength. For many years she has worked on social-awareness campaigns with organizations such as charity: water, TOMS Shoes, Warby Parker and Malaria No More. Her images compel thought and challenge action. She has traveled to over 50 nations in the last 10 years -- and she'll keep going until she sees that every person on the planet has access to education, clean drinking water and a job to provide for their families. At heart, she is a connector, fostering relationships across continents, cultures, industries and perspectives. While not traveling, Esther is currently home-based in Dallas, TX at WELD.
Join Julie Ann and Michael Bungay Stanier, the Senior Partner of Box of Crayons, a company that helps organizations do less Good Work and more Great Work - a natural fit for ConsciousSHIFT!Michael was banned from his high school reunion for “the balloon incident," was sued by one of his Law School lecturers for defamation, gave himself a concussion digging a hole as a labourer, was fired on his first shift as a garage attendant and has held a number of jobs where he had little or no impact.Luckily, there’s also been some upside. He is the author of a number of successful books including the best sellers ‘End Malaria’ (which raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for Malaria No More) and ‘Do More Great Work: stop the busywork and start the work that matters’.Before Box of Crayons, he was the first employee for what is now the world’s largest independent innovation agency, and while most of what he invented never saw the light of day, he did have a hand in Pizza Hut’s stuffed crust pizza. He has also spent time as a change management consultant where he batted about average for the industry for really successful change projects - 10% or so. His only lasting impact in this role was writing the global vision for GlaxoSmithKline, something that has lasted more than a decade even though it took almost no time at all to create.Box of Crayons is a company that helps organizations around the world do less Good Work and more Great Work.
This week we talk to AmberJ Lawson. She's the CEO/Co-founder of Comedy Gives Back - an online streaming telethon to raise money for Malaria No More. We also talk about Dailymotion, a video platform many people aren't using but maybe should be.
