Enjoy this interview with Amber J Tresca, health content creator, writer, speaker, advocate, and host of the About IBD podcast. Amber was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis at the age of 16, had a colectomy at age 26, and started writing about inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and other health conditions one year later! She's been writing ever since, sharing both about her own journey and writing for a variety of health publications giving insight and technical information about IBD. In this podcast episode, she share's her story, perspective, and tips for fellow IBD patients. From the show: SG: How important it is to get care, and the right care, right away? AT: …it's so important. And it's important also to not get into that fatalistic state of mind that I was in, that I still don't know where it came from, but that I could only expect so much improvement and that it wasn't going to go further than that. I should have expected, I should have demanded more, but I didn't know what I didn't know. Today we have better treatments, we have a lot more understanding, there's better testing, etc. But you still, as the patient, have to be the one (or as a parent or a caregiver) you have to be the one to make sure that all of this is happening and you have to be the one to advocate for yourself or your loved one to make sure that you're getting what you need. And I've heard lots of stories about how people advocate for themselves and the ways in which they make changes…There's always a workaround. There's always a way that you can make the situation work for your life, but you have to explain what that is to your healthcare providers and help them help you get to where it is that you want to be. SG: What are some of the top resources that you would recommend to people listening to go to for information? AT: …my first place to go is PubMed, but I know that's not for everybody. Not everybody wants to wade through all of that stuff to find what they're looking for. But I do often give talks or write about how you can find good sources of information. …government sites, educational sites, and patient advocacy group sites, so .gov, .org, .edu, is usually a good place to start and to find information. The second thing that I would look for in information is who wrote it. And I just told you that I write all kinds of stuff without a byline. But when you read something, there should be an identifiable entity, at least. Even if it says staff writer. It shouldn't just be a bunch of very clinical advice-sounding type stuff on a page and you don't know who wrote it. You should know who wrote it and how to get in contact with them. Three, would be looking at what the site that you are interacting with, or the app, I guess I should say, what they're getting out of it. Are they selling you something? And I'm not saying that someone who has something for sale is always off the table. I mean, if you sign up for my newsletter, I have discount codes in there too that you can go and purchase some of the things that I have vetted and that I use in my own life…But I will say it should be clear and you should have a clear understanding of if that person is selling something and then what they are selling. …So the fourth thing is, is that you want to see that the information that you are looking at, receiving, interacting with, goes back to some primary sources. So that's where it gets back to that PubMed thing…Did they get it from a source that is, for instance, someone interviewed a clinician, which is something that you and I do, you interview someone like that, they're a source. They link back to a clinical trial. Okay, they're talking about a medication. So they link to maybe a trial on that medication. That's great. Or they link back to, for instance, a patient advocacy group or an educational resource like an IBD center, which there are several across the country. That's good to know. Whenever I see something that says like 10% of people XYZ, I want to know where that 10% came from. Where'd that come from? There's got to be something behind that for me. So that's another thing that I usually say that people should look for when they're looking for good sources of information. …number five is your own healthcare team. Ask them for the resources, okay, because we all want to go online and look for things because it's easy and convenient and works out really well. But there are also sources that are offline, another patient that they might suggest for you to be a sort of a mentor for you, or someone else on the healthcare team, like a dietician, like a mental health specialist. Those people are great sources, primary sources, of information for you, and then they can also tell you what it is that they think would be helpful for you. If you want to hear the time I totally bombed my classroom observation… listen up. On today's episode, you'll hear what I learned from that experience and also the tips I have for you now that I've helped tens of thousands of teachers on my blog and podcast… PLUS quotes from members of our Wife Teacher Mommies Unite Facebook group, too! Check out these 8 tips for your teacher observation! We asked the awesome members in our Wife Teacher Mommy Unite facebook group some questions about teacher observation and we got back over 100 responses! Here are some of their responses to those questions. How do you prepare for classroom observation?"Teach your children non-verbal behavior queues beforehand, that way if they are misbehaving during a lesson, they will know what the hand signals and eye looks mean so you can quickly and quietly carry on with your actual lesson."-Tara S.What do you do during teacher observation?"I always think of the saying “Dance like nobody is watching” but change it to “Teach like nobody is watching. have found over the years that if I stress myself out prior to my observation I stumble over my words, forget certain things that I wanted to mention and/or do, etc. I just carry on with my normal routine and act as if it is just myself and my students in the room; it is much easier said than done though!"-Shannon M.What do principals look for during observation?"Don't do something big and fancy. Stick with how you normally teach. Administration wants to see YOU and how you teach. Not the dog and pony show that can happen when observations occur. Kids will pick up on the change and some will act out because it is off routine."-Betsy S.How do you stay calm during an observation?"Be the teacher you know how to be, and give yourself grace. Things are going to happen and go wrong; it's only natural. Sometimes the best feedback you can receive from others is the feedback based on how you handled unexpected situations!"-Amber J.These are just a few tips and questions we go over on this episode of the podcast. We have all seen God working in our lives, however, we might not all be aware it is God who is working in our lives. This is why it is so important we start talking about it more. The more we share our experiences the more people understand how God works and how much He truly loves us. If you would be willing to share any experience you have had of how God has worked or is working your life, please email me at catherine@findingtruenorthcoaching.com or just click on the link below. It won't take up much of your time and your story could be just the story that someone needs to hear today. Prayerfully consider sharing. Everyone has a story and the world needs to hear them. I look forward to spending time with you again tomorrow and I will have another witness for you next Wednesday. Have a blessed day!
There is a right way and a wrong way. Proverbs 16:25 “Sometimes there is a way that seems to be right, but in the end it is the way to death.”Sometimes there is a way that seems right. I think this hit me when I heard Father Mike talking about it because I can see us all doing it. He said this verse is talking about sin. We all know what is right and wrong. We all know the various things God wants us to do and the things He doesn't want us to do. And yet, we still don't always do what's right. Living in the world we live in and the time we live in, it can be hard to do what is right. It can be hard to know what is right these days. Actually if you read the Bible, or you read stories of the Saints, I am not sure it was ever easy to live how God wants us to live. I don't know if God intended for it to be easy. What would be easy is if we had lived as He intended. God intended His people to be set apart from everyone one else. Come to think of it, I am not sure it would have been easy even then. Look at the Israelites once they left Egypt. They saw miracle after miracle. And I am not talking about small miracles, if there is such a thing. I am talking about parting the red sea and being inundated with quail because they were complaining and they were tired of the Manna that God was miraculously providing them each day. The Israelites were living apart from everyone else. They were living in the wilderness all together and set apart from all the foreigners. However, they still struggled to follow God's ways. They complained a lot and turned away from God a lot. I guess no matter where you live, what time you live in, or who you live with it can be hard to do the right thing all the time. What made this verse really stand out was how it was saying sometimes there is a way that seems to be right, but in the end its the way to death. What that makes me wonder is about all the things that I do, even when I know I shouldn't, because I think God doesn't really mind. It is not usually big things, although sometimes it might be. Have you ever done something you know God doesn't really want you to do it, but you talk yourself into it anyway because of some logic that makes sense in your own head? It made me smile when I wrote that because I instantly thought of my boys. They are master negotiators. I think most kids are, but since mine are the ones I deal with on a daily basis I am going to say they are extra good at it. We will come up with a well thought out rule, that makes complete sense and we know has their best interest at heart. We know the reason behind the rule, we know why it is a good rule. We are completely confident this is a good rule. We introduce it to the kids and 10 minutes later they have us questioning the rule, our parenting, the world. It's so crazy how good kids are at coming up with excuses and reasons why what we know to be good for them, isn't actually good for them. It made me smile because I can picture God shaking His head just like I do with the boys. At least God isn't left questioning his decisions. He knows He is right and is just shaking His head at our attempt to negotiate or prove wrong the Almighty One.If you have kids, or have ever worked with kids you might be thinking what we do is nothing like what they do. However, think about the last time you did something you knew you weren't supposed to do. It might have been something small or it might have been something big. Think about all the justification you did to be ok with doing the thing. For instance, in the Catholic Church, you are not supposed to eat an hour before you receive the host. We believe the Eucharist is the Body of Christ and so we are supposed to have an empty stomach before going to Communion. However, sometimes I don't do that. Sometimes I tell myself God won't mind because I really need my cup of tea so I can stay awake in Mass, or I needed to eat this banana so I didn't feel hungry at Mass. I can come up with a million reasons why God doesn't actually mind if I eat before receiving the Eucharist. I do similar justifying when I have something else to do instead of going to Mass. God won't mind, He knows how important soccer is, or He knows how important lunch with my friends is. God knows I am traveling so He doesn't mind. I think it is absolutely true that God is understanding. I don't think it is the end of the world if you do some of these things occasionally. And yet, I don't actually know if that's true. I think if we do something long enough it is no longer an exception to the rule, it is a new habit. Have you made a new habit out of doing things you know God wouldn't want you to do? You were able to justify it so often to yourself, now it is the norm, it is a habit. I think this can be a very slippery slope. Yes, God is full of grace and He will forgive any sins for which we repent. However, does that mean we count on God's grace and intentionally do something we know is wrong because we really want to do it and because it isn't “that” wrong. Also, there is another way to look at each thing you are doing. Maybe you are telling yourself, as I do often, God doesn't care if I eat this cookie. Maybe that is true. It is not a sin to eat that cookie. However, what is behind our desire to eat that cookie. Are we just eating one or are we being gluttonous and eating the whole pack? Maybe God doesn't mind if you drinking a coffee or tea before you walk into church. However, does He mind the fact you know you are doing something wrong and yet doing it anyway? It might not be the action itself, but the motivation behind the action. I am sure God does understand how important it is that you go out with your friends for lunch. However, He may also wonder why you didn't look up other mass times that you could go to that didn't interfere with your lunch plans. There are usually so many mass times at a Catholic Church. You can even go Saturday or Sunday. Yes, it takes more time and more planning but you can make it work. God might not be upset if you miss service while on vacation, and yet think of how happy He would be if you did go out of your way to find a way to attend a service while on vacation. The ending of this verse is what really has my attention, “But in the end its the way to death.” That doesn't sound pleasant. What if we are justifying all the times we don't want to live like God wants us to live and then we end up ruining our chances to spend eternity with our Heavenly Father? I am certainly not saying that if you miss mass while on vacation or eat and drink before going to communion then you are not going to heaven. All I am thinking is, if we break the little rules God gives us so easily, what is to stop us from breaking the bigger rules. I can see how if we think about his too much we might get anxious. I don't think this is what the verse intends for us. I don't want to you to finish listening to this episode and be anxious about your actions leading to death. I do, however, thing this verse is a great reminder to look at our actions and see if we are living according to how God is asking us to live? Are there things we know God doesn't want us to do and yet we are doing them anyway? Can we stop doing these things? If no, can we pray for the strength and the proper situation so we can stop them. Dear Heavenly Father, I ask you to bless all those listening to this episode today. Lord, we want to follow your ways, please help us. Lord, if there are any places in our lives where we are doing things you don't approve of, please show us. Please give us the strength and/or the plan we need to stop doing those things. Lord, help us stop justifying our behaviors with excuses and help us to do what is right. We love you Lord, you are truly amazing!!You are my Aide and my rescue from the enemy. You are our Everlasting Father. You are the Mighty God, the Prince of Peace. We love you and we adore you. We are so very grateful for all you do. We ask all of this in accordance with your will and in Jesus' holy name, Amen!Thank you so much for joining me on this journey to walk boldly with Jesus. Tomorrow's guest speaker will be Amber J. Amber and I are in Big Life mentoring together. Amber was going through some pretty difficult things in life. She really didn't like her job, it was making her miserable and her marriage was really struggling because they couldn't have children. Amber did not really consider herself a believer, however, she was desperate and decided to say her first prayer in a very long time. After seeing God answer prayer after prayer, she could no longer chalk it up to coincidence and she began her faith journey to grow closer to God. I know you are going to really enjoy her witness. I can't wait to share that with you tomorrow. Remember Jesus loves you and so do I. Have a blessed day!

EXPLICIT: The 9th Annual Feminine Weapon Day benefit took place at a mystical home in downtown Los Angeles. Since 2014, people have been gathering on January 30th to honor the power of femininity and co-creation, in benefit of children who are in need of care. Limited to just 50 people, the sold-out event was a one-night-only interactive theater, “The Space Between Stories.” The raved-about evening began with the group watching the sunset on a rooftop overlooking the city while two World Cup Winning fencers spared to music playing from a rare instrument called, the Ambox. If that wasn't enough to inspire chatter, magician Chad Nelson made his rounds for an extra later of wow. At dusk, participants were guided through a mysterious silver door and into a whimsical world where ceremony and art came to life. Already connected through shared experience, people further bonded over heartfelt performances, a one-of-a-kind auction, and delicious food by Top Vegan Chef, Nicole Derseweh. No nobody objected to the event being booze-free. What touched every heart was a fireside chat with Christina and the executive director of She Ready Foundation, Dr. Thyonne Gordon. The group learned about issues with the foster care system, and how they can help ease the pain so many children experience on a daily basis. Proceeds from Feminine Weapon Day benefit at-risk youth and children in underserved communities to receive Art & Healing programs, like the ones WeDeepen presents for grownups, adjusted for kids. At the time of this recording, the 9th Annual event raised $8K for the She Ready Foundation from ticket sales, donations, and the auction. In total and through the years, Feminine Weapon Day has raised over $73,000. In this podcast WeDeepen guide, Amber J and Christina recap Feminine Weapon Day. After they recap, Amber J reflects on the time that she contracted a "Shibari Shaman" to live with her for a month. It's an experience she said offered her healing, understanding, and preparation for meeting her King. While listening notice the feelings and thoughts that arise. Ever wondered what it's like to have it all? This week's guest on "Happiness through Hardship" - The Podcast is a powerhouse entrepreneur and digital media maven who once thought she had it all. Amber J Lawson has been at the cutting edge of the digital landscape receiving tremendous accolades including "Top 100 Influential People in Influencer Marketing," "Entrepreneur of the Year" and "Top Women in Digital" to name a few. Amber J worked incredibly hard to “make it” and was afraid to give up. She was tired of “living the life” or "having it all" because the truth was - she felt like she wasn't really living at all. Amber J is here to tell her story - about how she created a true spark to live a better life. Amber J talks about several modalities that can help us all take better care of ourselves, increase our joy and transform our lives. She's a huge proponent of finding space for quiet (and creativity) and creating rituals. She also believes in the power of hugging, dancing when we get out of bed and the importance of connection and vulnerability. Amber J is dynamic, full of positive energy and truly hilarious. She's the Co-founder and CEO of the Emmy nominated Comedy Gives Back, the founder of a conscious company, Goddess Process and CEO of Good Amplified - a social media consultancy that serves nonprofits. Amber J. Lawson has used laughter as a coping mechanism in her personal life for a long time. She describes comedy as a “through line” in her life, and finds it of utmost importance to get rid of the stigma attached to mental health and wellness in the comedy scene. In this solo episode I share a very special message about knowing your worth, specifically, knowing you are worthy of happiness. People tend to get stuck in toxic relationships with people or habits and just can’t seem to escape it. Maybe you’re wondering “How do I get out of a toxic cycle and stay out?” or “How do I break a bad habit that always brings negative feelings?” I’ll talk about why it’s so hard to break the bad habit, how to get out of the toxic relationship, and know you are worthy of happiness! You need to remember that you are worthy of happiness and your actions can give you that happiness or push it away. Stop scrolling on social media, stop procrastinating, stop skipping the gym or working out, stop whatever you know will end up in negative feelings like regret, sadness, and overwhelm. Choose to be worthy of happiness. Choosing your happiness is NOT selfish. You can't control other people and their energy or attitude, but you can control how you handle that and go about the rest of your day. At the end of this episode you’ll know to increase your happiness, escape those toxic relationships, break those bad habits, and know you are worthy of happiness!Links:For daily inspiration, videos of the podcast, and my personal journey, follow me on instagram!
