We were thrilled to have Canadian Coach & Choreographer, and Co-Host of #ThatFigureSkatingShow, Asher Hill join us this past Monday, March 15th, 2021. He was on Battle of the Blades (BOTB) mastering the art of BFF on ice and placed 2nd in the competition with hockey player partner, Jess Campbell. The Profz get to ask him a bunch of questions about his experience staking & coaching a professional hockey player in figure skates, the immediate chemistry & friendship with his partner and how BOTB helped repair his relationship with the sport. Now he is dominating the sports industry as a Canadian Coach & Choreographer, and Co-Host of #ThatFigureSkatingShow on CBC Sports YouTube! Asher sheds light on racism in figure skating and offers insight of what the sport can do to better encourage black youth to take figure skating or encourage diversity. It reads, “Can’t tell if @paulopowerwatts is happy with my numbers.” @paulopowerwatts is Paulo Saldanha, the head of performance at  Israel Start-Up Nation. He’s been working to get the four-time Tour de France winner back to the level he was at before his serious accident in June 2019. Saldanha has also been working closely with Michael Woods for roughly eight years. In this episode, Saldanha discusses training those two riders. He also gets into some big questions. So often, we rush into giving advice to others. We don't see the people around us as creative and whole so we don't believe they have the tools or knowledge to achieve their goals. He was the first Canadian Coach of the Year.   Michael explains why the manager only needs 7 good questions that transforms your leadership game on his book, The Coaching Habit.   “For the simplicity on this side of complexity, I wouldn't give you a fig. But for the simplicity on the other side of complexity, for that I would give you anything I have.” - Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. For the teachings that Michael does, he tries to strive for that simplicity and he thinks that so often we over complicate things. Michael is all about making things simple, practical and doable. For normal people, coaching is a little but weird because some people are being traumatized by their coaches. For Michael, coaching is a very powerful leadership behavior to get the best out of people, get the best out of yourself and to have more impact in the work that you are doing. Part of the question that he usually ask is what is the least he can teach people and what is the least people need to have the most impact into the work they need.   “Spend less time asking people what to do and more times asking good questions.”   If you interact with other human beings in your life learning to be more coach-like which in the end is, can you beat yourself a little bit longer? Can you rush for action and give advice a little bit more slowly? Being a coach-like can be a little bit different for everybody.   “Most of us are advice giving maniacs”   Michael discovered that people advice is not nearly as good as they think it is because. The advice they have isn't solving the right problem The advice they have isn't that good of a solution People preferred to figure this stuff out themselves and come up with their own ideas and their own advice   Michael also talked about the And what else...   And what else, comes with an insight that a person answer to your first question is never there only answer and it rarely gets the best to answer. And what else is also a great management tool if you're going to slow down the rush to advice, asking and what else is a way of controlling your advice monster who is waiting for a leap of action that is trying to solve the problem and save the day. And you want to return this advice monster.   If you are saying yes to this, what are you saying no to? Michael’s strategy question in the book says: When you think about innovation and you think about the challenges that brings with it so much of what great innovation is about and being clear to what the no's are so you can say yes to the stuff that really matters. Every time you say yes you are rolling out a bunch of things that you can do instead of finding the things that you really want to do. What is ghost coaching (Coaching the Ghost) The difference between bad, good and great work and how to leverage it The benefits about giving less advice and staying curios longer   Should you get a coach when you are stuck in a rut? Michael says that you should not get a coach immediately. If getting a coach works for you financially and how will you can commit, that would be really powerful. Michael Bungay Stanier was the first Canadian Coach of the Year, he is a Rhodes Scholar, and was recently recognized as the #3 Global Guru in coaching. In this episode, we talk about how to be a coach-like manager to increase your team’s productivity, impact and engagement.  Michael is the founder of Box of Crayons, a company best known for teaching 10-minute coaching so that busy managers can build stronger teams and get better results.  While he’s all for promoting coaching in the organisations, he says that we should never try to build a coaching culture. Coaching is a powerful force of change and goodness in organisational life but it’s a means to an end - a process that helps better outcomes happen. And when we talk about building a “coaching culture” too much, the danger is that we make coaching culture the thing rather than what it allows to bring to this world.  "Coaching is a powerful force for change in organisations. But we shouldn't forget that it's merely a means to an end - a process that helps better outcomes happen."   Michael knows that asking managers to do something over and above what they are already juggling as part of their role isn’t be realistic. So instead, he approaches coaching as “a way of being”. "Being a coach-like manager is not about adding something to your already too long to-do list. It's about transforming the way you do things." Being a coach-like manager is basically about being curious for a little bit longer and rushing to action and advice giving just a little bit more slowly. "To be a coach-like manager, all you need to do is to stay curious a little bit longer and rush to action just a little bit more slowly." Michael's no-nonsense, manager-focused approach to cultivating a coaching culture reminded me of the huge importance of empathy in a change effort.  And probably one of the reasons why so many change efforts fail, particualrly culture change efforts is that empathy is not easy. We are not wired to step into someone else’s shoes and to see the world from their perspective. But if you can do the empathy bit well, everything else just flows from there.  Empathy is not easy. "And what else?" -- It helps them go a level deeper.  Keep asking it, keep going deeper "Be lazy, be curious, be often" -- Michael's motto towards coaching. A Rhodes scholar who earned both arts and law degrees with highest honors from Australian National University and an Master’s degree from Oxford, he is a popular speaker at business and coaching conferences, and was named Canadian Coach of the Year in 2006 He is also the author of a number of books, his latest book, The Coaching Habit: Say Less, Ask More & Change the Way You Lead Forever, was published in February 2016 and is a bestseller. Bungay Stanier talks about how it is possible, in 10 minutes or less, to ask strategic questions to drive changes in behavior, have a more engaged, smart, autonomous team that will allow you to work less hard and have more impact …if you stay curious. The 7 essential coaching questions that he talks about in his book are: What’s on your mind? This open ended question brings up things that are most useful and valuable And what else? What’s the real challenge here for you? Focus question, if you ask this question more than once – the ‘challenge’ will shift. Once the person gets clear on what the challenge is, the person can often figure out the answer. What do you want? How can I help you? or What do you want from me? ‘Lazy question’ – allows you to find out what people are really looking for in terms of help If you say yes to this, what must you say no to? Strategy question - What was most useful or valuable here for you? This is a learning question, as a manager you are a teacher, so when people can reflect on what was most helpful. It also allows the manager to understand what was most helpful in this conversation   To have authentic conversations, the culture needs to be one in which employees feel safe to share. Consider TERA when considering your work environment. TERA stands for: Tribe – make it feel like ‘you & me’, rather than ‘you versus me’ Expectation – how do I know what is about to happen Rank – how do I feel the same as you rather than less than you Autonomy – how do I get to make some of the choices, rather than you telling me everything  I need to do Bungay Stanier advises employees who want to be coached by their managers to be the change they want to see in the world. Practice being more coach like yourself. Ask your manager for what you want (and buy the book!). His advice to managers who want to get started as coaches is to pick one thing and see if you can get some traction on that. Go to coaching.com and download the first few chapters. It's a great self-management tool for rescuers because it keeps you from jumping in, it allows you to stay curious a little bit longer It's a great question for the victim role because it helps give them other options Most people only consider two options before making a decision: should I stay or should I go?
