Send us a Text Message.Coaches and leaders, I know that you make a ton of decisions everyday. What would it be like to feel empowered and energized while making them (instead of fristrated and exhausted)? Neuroscience expert Dr. Chris Lee joins this podcast to shed light on how our brains work for and against us when making choices. From overcoming negativity bias to harnessing the power of intuition, Dr. Chris Lee offers actionable tips and strategies to make better decisions and feel more satisfied with the outcomes. Key points:Our brains are wired for survival, not happiness. This can lead to negativity bias and neurological drift, where negative thoughts and memories get worse over time.Effective decision-making is a habit. It requires awareness of your triggers, alignment with your goals, and rewarding yourself for making good choices. (Learn the 3-step process)Intuition is real, but it's not magic. This is a vital art of decision-making (and feeling satisfied about it). It's a feeling of inspiration or connection to an idea, but it's important to distinguish it from fear-based thoughts.Overcoming fear and discomfort: Build your capacity for curiosity (over fear) and taking calculated risks for progress. So, if you're ready to step into some bold decision-making while feeling satisfied and fulfilled, give this episode a listen.  And remember, embracing the vulnerability it takes to take risks along the way is how we truly make those choices that light us up.Podcast Sponsor:Sibme Coaching PlatformLet's Stay Connected!Website | Instagram | Twitter | Linkedin | Facebook | Contact Us

Hal Hershfield is here to discuss the concept of the future self and its impact on decision-making, featuring insights from his new book, Your Future Self. Hershfield explains that humans often prioritize their present desires over their future goals, leading to short-term thinking and procrastination.  He highlights the importance of considering future outcomes when making choices and provides strategies for aligning present actions with future desires. This episode is relevant for individuals seeking to overcome present bias and improve their decision-making skills. By understanding the principles of what Hal calls “mental time travel” and applying the techniques discussed in the episode, listeners can increase their long-term goal prioritization and make more informed choices that lead to long-term success. In this episode: Discover the intriguing concept of the future self and how it shapes our perceptions. Uncover the power of your future self for superior decision-making. Establish an emotional bond with your future self, fostering personal growth. Understand the application of mental time travel in business to strengthen your strategies.  Show Notes: 00:00:00 - Introduction, In this episode, Melina Palmer interviews Dr. Hal Hershfield, author of Your Future Self. They discuss the concept of time discounting and the ways in which our present and future selves are connected. 00:02:08 - Understanding the Self, Hal explains that the self is a bundle of associations, emotions, thoughts, and ideals that have some stability over time. He explores the idea of how we define ourselves and how our perception of our future selves affects our decision-making. 00:06:00 - Similarity with Future Self, Hal highlights the importance of feeling a sense of connection and emotional overlap with our future selves. The more we see ourselves as similar to our future selves, the more likely we are to make decisions that benefit them. 00:11:42 - The "We" Aspect, The concept of the "we" relationship, similar to how we view our relationships with others, can also apply to our relationship with our future selves. Thinking of our future self as part of our collective identity can help us make decisions that benefit both our present and future selves. 00:13:23 - Reframing Future-oriented Decisions, Hal discusses the importance of reframing future-oriented decisions to provide immediate benefits and satisfaction. By finding pleasure in doing something good for our future selves, we can increase motivation and make better long-term decisions. 00:14:44 - Making Decisions with the Future Self in Mind, Hal emphasizes the importance of considering how we will look back on our decisions instead of focusing solely on our immediate feelings. By stepping into the shoes of our future selves, we can reassess our choices and consider the value of relief in completing tasks versus the regret of procrastinating. 00:15:11 - The Hidden Zero Effect, Dr. Hershfield introduces the concept of the "hidden zero effect" in decision-making. By considering both the immediate benefits and long-term consequences of our choices, we can make more informed decisions. This approach helps us avoid neglecting the potential negative outcomes or overlooking the relief we may feel in completing tasks. 00:16:34 - Mistakes in Mental Time Travel, Hal discusses three common mistakes in mental time travel: missing your flight, poor trip planning, and packing the wrong clothes. These mistakes, which are all featured in his book, Your Future Self, highlight how we can become too focused on the present moment and fail to consider the future implications of our actions. By avoiding these mistakes, we can make better decisions for our future selves. 00:19:24 - Short-Term vs. Long-Term Focus in the Workplace, In the context of work, it is important to balance short-term and long-term focus. Hal suggests considering whether we prioritize urgent tasks over important ones and how we can shift our mindset to focus on long-term goals. This applies to both individual employees and collective organizations. 00:28:28 - Learning from Individuals, The conversation discusses the importance of learning from individuals within an organization and how their actions can be used to overcome challenges. 00:29:23 - Exciting Future Research, Dr. Hershfield shares his excitement about two areas of future research. The first is a deeper exploration of commitment devices and understanding the predictors of their adoption. The second is focusing on collective decisions, environmental decisions, and end-of-life planning, including the use of letter-writing exercises. 00:32:35 - Balancing the Present and Future, Hal discusses the concept of balancing the present and future. He shares a personal story about realizing that there will be a day when his children no longer want to spend time with him, highlighting the importance of living in the present while also considering future goals and values. 00:34:46 - Behavioral Change Intervention, Hal and his colleague are working on a project using the idea of balancing the present and future as a behavioral change intervention. They aim to apply this concept to various areas, including parent-child relationships, to help individuals make choices aligned with their long-term values. 00:38:42 - Intentional Mental Time Travel, The conversation emphasizes the importance of intentional mental time travel. Instead of reactive thinking, individuals should make deliberate choices about when to live in the moment and when to consider the impact of their actions on the future. 00:43:07 - Conclusion, Melina's top insights from the conversation. Why we must learn lessons about how we learn? CIS welcomed world-leading education researcher, cognitive psychologist and Ask a Cognitive Scientist columnist Dan Willingham to discuss how we learn and why this matters. While researchers have learned vastly more about how we learn, this isn't always reflected in teaching within schools or in how students study. Many practices for teaching and self-study are based on outdated theories, misconceptions, neuro-myths, anecdotes, and trial-and-error. But increasingly scientifically-informed practice can optimize teaching and study time – ultimately helping students to be more effective, efficient, and engaged learners. What are the key lessons from how we learn? How should cognitive science inform teaching and learning practice? Can we train our brains to be better learners? Why do so many teaching and learning fads not work in practice? Why are misconceptions about learning so persistent and hard to shake? Daniel T. Willingham is Professor of Psychology at the University of Virginia, with expertise in cognitive psychology and neuroscience as it applies to school education. He is author of the Ask a Cognitive Scientist column of the American Educator journal, as well as several books, including Why Don't Students Like School?, When Can You Trust the Experts?, and Outsmart Your Brain: Why Learning is Hard and How You Can Make It Easy. This discussion is convened by CIS program director in education policy, Glenn Fahey. Glenn is co-author of the report, Failing to teach the teacher: An analysis of mathematics Initial Teacher Education (CIS, 2021).

In today's conversation, I am joined by Dr. Dan Willingham, a memory expert with a Ph.D. in Cognitive Psychology from Harvard. Dan's new book Outsmart Your Brain (which we discuss today) will change your life. While the book is catered to K-16 learners (for example, it includes chapters on “how to take notes,” “how to listen to a lecture,” “how to read hard books,” and “how to take tests”) trust me when I say this book is for you and everyone you know. It is fascinating and will help you with any presentation you may give or meeting you will be in moving forward. Trust me, you're gonna love this. A little more about Dan: His work has appeared in the Washington Post, The New York Times, and many other publications, and he is the author of several books – his writing has appeared in 18 languages! In 2017 he was appointed by President Obama to serve as a Member of the National Board for Education Sciences. Whether you want to be a better learner yourself or if you have kids (including college students) in your life whom you want to help be successful, this episode and book are for you. I can't wait to dive into this one because there is so much great stuff. Show Notes: [00:43] In today's conversation, I am joined by Dr. Dan Willingham. Dan earned his Ph.D. in Cognitive Psychology from Harvard University in 1990. [03:03] Dan shares about himself, his background, and the work he does.  He was trained as a cognitive psychologist.   [04:04] He shares his transition from basic researcher to applied researcher.  [07:02] Often, we assume people know that thing that we know so we miss key things when presenting. That means they don't get value from your talk.  [08:41] There are things we know we should do that we find difficult to implement. Sometimes we really don't know what is optimal to do. We tend to do things in the moment that we feel are working and are not that difficult. (But often, the harder/counterintuitive thing will make a much bigger impact.) [11:16] Does cramming work? Dan says, “kind of.” It depends on what your goals are. If you do not care about remembering something in the long term then crowding it all in right before you need to perform is actually fine.  [12:50] The only way to ensure that you remember things in the long term is if your learning happens over time rather than all crammed together.  [15:42] If you are trying to master a new skill or a new topic and you feel like you need to wait to start until you have more than small bits of time, don't wait! The data shows this is actually optimal for learning and retention.  [18:2326] Creating that consistent study or work habit by time and not by task is very important.  [21:04] We all procrastinate. It is a natural tendency.  [22:37] The key thing is you have to give yourself permission to stop if you want to.  [24:26] The night of sleep is important in consolidating the memories that were formed during the day. If you don't get much sleep or you get low-quality sleep you are tampering with the learning that you put so much time into the previous day.  [25:40] Your intention or your desire to learn contributes nothing to whether or not you will learn something. There are lots of things we want to remember but don't.  [27:26] Memory loves meaning. That is the main way we remember.  [29:05] You draw memory out the same way that it went in.  [30:53] Memories are going to be queued by thoughts or by things in the environment later. The way you are going to be able to draw memories out most successfully is when the queue is a good match for the way you thought about the memory at the time you were trying to remember it.  [32:51] When you are storing something away, think to yourself, “How am I likely later to try and remember this?” and make that part of the way it becomes retrievable.  [35:48] How do you organize 94 tips in one book? He chose to sort them by task. It is organized by things you would do that entail learning (how to read hard books, how to take notes, etc).  [38:45] When there is a hierarchical organization in speeches you are expected to make connections among the different things that you are hearing. Because it is not a narrative it is difficult to make those connections.  [41:45] You want to reframe to highlight what you enjoy instead of what is making you procrastinate. Looking at it in this way helps you overcome that.  [44:43] Allocate time to different tasks to help you get to the tasks that you tend to procrastinate on. Do the hard task first.  [46:40] It is not that what you are doing now is ineffective. It is that it can be slightly tweaked to be significantly more effective.  [48:31] What's the simplest tip in the book? Some data shows that chewing gum helps you to focus for 20 minutes. Give it a try if you like gum! [50:328] Melina's closing thoughts [51:39] In understanding how your own brain is wired to learn as well as others, and then how to "outsmart it" every step of the way is pure gold. Memory is a funny thing. We like to think we have these perfect pictures of what really happened in our minds waiting to be retrieved in pristine condition, but that's not at all how it works. It turns out we have all sorts of biases that, well, bias our memories. And that is important to know in our interactions with other people in life and business.  The truth is: you can remember something completely different from someone else, and neither of you has to be wrong. Let me say that again, even if you remember something that is completely different than someone else, it doesn't mean that either of you is wrong. Our brains screen for different information than what someone else might be screening for (focusing illusion and confirmation bias). That subconscious filter is sifting through a lot of stuff, and what mattered to you and what you remember is never the full picture. This episode, which originally came out in early 2019, is a quick run through of a bunch of memory biases (part of the 8-part “All the Biases”  series).  So, why was memory important to refresh today? It is because of the guest I am delighted to introduce you to this coming Friday, Dan Willingham, a memory expert whose book Outsmart Your Brain will change your life (and that of every learner you know). Outsmart Your Brain has chapters on “how to take notes,” “how to listen to a lecture,” “how to read hard books,” “how to take tests,” and more. It is fascinating and will help you with any presentation you may give or meeting you will be in moving forward. Trust me, you're gonna love that conversation and Dan's book, so be sure to subscribe to The Brainy Business podcast now (before you forget). (Haha, memory joke!) Show Notes: [00:39] Today's episode is all about memory biases. Memory is a funny thing. [01:16] You can remember something completely different from someone else, and neither of you has to be wrong. [03:41] Today's episode is going to be divided into three sections: general memory stuff, false memories, and tips on how you can use these biases to help you remember things better.  [04:45] Our memories are basically inaccurate renditions our brains tell us and every time we access them we change them a little. So the more you think about something the less and less it is like the original version. (Frustrating, but true.) [06:26] Your customers, coworkers, friends, and family all have these same biases, so hopefully learning more about all your brains will help in all sorts of interactions in the future.  [07:20] You are the hero of your own story and no one will remember your story as well as you do (but of course even you don't remember your story correctly). The emotions tied to bad memories will fade quicker than the emotions tied to positive events.  [10:08] A few well planned surprise and delight moments throughout a relationship can create good peaks (and remember the most recent end holds the most weight).  [12:38] A false memory is when we accidentally think something we imagined really happened and misattribute it as a memory.   [14:15] Our brains are powerful, but they are easily manipulated too.  [15:39] The opposite of a false memory is called cryptomnesia when a real memory is mistaken as imagination because there is not a proper experience of it being a memory.  [17:21] We do tend to remember the efforts we had to put in as much higher than they were and toils more difficult as they were in reality.  [19:12] Don't feel like you need to remember everything about everything. Instead, remember important things that can't be easily looked up, and don't gunk up your brain with all the trivial information. [20:45] If you want to be able to remember things better and with easier recall, it is best to have repeated exposure over a long span of time instead of trying to cram it all in at the last minute. [22:14] Try to commit things to memory in the context they belong to or multiple contexts so they are less isolated. The mood we are in is also tied to the context. [24:13] If you want to remember things, write them down.  [25:51] Visual images are often recalled by our visual subconscious faster and easier than words because of the picture superiority effect. [27:38] We all put so much effort into making things as easy as possible to read and process but in reality due to processing difficulty, stuff that takes longer to read and process is easier to remember.  [28:43] We are provided with lists of things all the time and the way those things are presented absolutely impacts memory.   [30:15] Due to the next in line effect you are less likely to remember the words people spoke just before you because you were distracted with what you wanted to say. Being a good listener is key to building relationships in life and business.  [31:40] Melina's closing thoughts Thanks for listening. Don't forget to subscribe on Apple Podcasts or Android. "Your brain is completely insensitive to your desire to learn." Dan Willingham is a Professor of cognitive science at the University of Virginia, and the author of Outsmart Your Brain: Why Learning Is Hard and How You Can Make It Easy, his most recent book. Dan's book spoke to me for it's deep pragmatism in this field of human learning, and it is the word that emerges for me, out of this conversation. Dan's work bridges the learnings of cognitive science with the real world implications, and possibilities, of these findings, and their transformational potential on learning, and teaching. Topics covered include why the brain is not really built to think, the missing piece in teaching students how to learn, on why eduction elicits so much emotion, and the joy of walking in solitude. As for rest, respite and contemplation, it's a journey that is unfolding for Dan, and his openness in this conversation, really moved me. We also talk stamp collecting. I'll leave it there for now... When was the last time you gave someone advice? It’s easy to fall into that trap because we feel like we’re helping. But Dr. Marcia Reynolds argues this doesn’t help at all. If we truly want to support someone’s growth and development, we need to stop transacting with advice, and start transforming with coaching. In particular, we should employ conversational coaching. Here the emphasis is on helping others understand what they know, through considered and safe conversation. This requires vulnerability, trust, and curiosity. The result is sustainable change, not quick fixes of surface irritants. Conversation implies dialog. The next time you arrive at a coaching moment with someone, check to see who’s doing most of the talking. If it’s you, back up. That’s just one suggestion from Dr. Reynolds. In the podcast, she talks through how to make the most of your coaching conversations, and see long-term change take root. She has provided coaching and training in 41 countries and is on faculty for coaching schools in China, Russia, and The Philippines. Marcia was the 5th International Coaching Federation (ICF) President and only recently she was inducted into ICF's Circle of Distinction for her contributions to the global coaching community. Marcia is also the author of several bestselling books including Outsmart Your Brain, Wonder Woman and the Discomfort Zone. Her latest book Coach the person not the problem, a guide to reflective enquiry, is the subject for this podcast. Podcast episode summary:  This episode focuses on the art of coaching and in particular the critical importance of reflective enquiry as part of the Coaching process. Dr. Marcia Reynolds shared her reasoning for writing another book on coaching.  Marcia felt it was important to impart her 25 years of coaching experience to share what is often missing in the coaching conversation and  to remind coaches and leaders how to help people think & think differently for change. Marcia is passionate about the value of Coaching and notwithstanding her enormous contribution to the field already she has decided to launch a 6 month program called Breakthrough Coaching in partnership with WBECS .It will commence in October 2020.   Points made through the episode: Marcia was a self-confessed obsessive. She was obsessed about understanding what it took to get at real behavioural change. Her quest saw her work to source those answers and combined to inform her choice to pursue a Doctorate. She explains the difference between telling and asking and what it does to our brain Curiously Feedback, although well intended has the affect similar to that of a person holding a gun to your head. The stress is that great. Most people do in fact know what they want, they simply do not do the reflection required to understand their thinking. We live in stories; we are meaning making machines. It is important to be able to see our stories and the frames that hold our identity, including beliefs and assumptions that are often flawed. As coaches we have grown to misunderstand the coaching competencies. Coaching Competency 2, getting at the coaching agreement is confused with solving problems. We are missing the art of reflection and we focus too much on the beautiful or powerful question. By way of her own research Marcia discovered the work of John Dewey in 1910. It explained the power of reflection “When you deprive a client from feeling you stunt their growth” Curiosity, Care and Courage form the important trilogy to get at whole person coaching Marcia wrote her new book; Coach the Person not the problem to dispel some myths about good coaching and to help coaches erase some bad habits, she has seen in the profession Being a coach is more about the being than the doing. Coaches need to appreciate the value of being wholly present to a client to notice the energic dynamic between two people or more. She implores coaches to get out of their own heads-“overthinking is the enemy of the coach” “just be with your client” In addition to her book she is about to Launch a new program in Partnership with WBECS called Breakthrough Coaching. A program designed for experienced coaches to genuinely upgrade their coaching to have a real impact with clients. Marcia shared an example of using Breakthrough coaching with one of her clients who was concerned about having a difficult conversation. She helped her client see what was really going on and what was presenting as the topic was really about personal responsibility. Covid-19 has amplified how we are experiencing emotions. We need to be able to self -regulate. She shares a lovely vignette with her own coach that demonstrates the power of reflection. Marcia shared some practical tips for Leaders of tips as we parted the conversation. She reminded leaders that “People want your presence more than they want your perfection” She shared that her book is also for Leaders; it is a real manual for helping leaders help others think about their thinking. As a parting thought Marcia reminded us that change is not just a conceptual construct. It is real phenomenon. It means we have to be comfortable with “not knowing” we don't know anything for certain right now and that is OK.   Resources: the following include the resources we alluded to over the course of our conversation   https://www.Covisioning.com wbecs.com Reynolds.M;Coach the Person, Not the Problem: A Guide to Using Reflective Inquiry, Outsmart Your Brain; The Discomfort Zone; and Wander Woman all by Dr. Reynolds.M.

Dr. Marcia (Marsha) Reynolds, Master Certified Coach, is fascinated by the brain, especially what triggers feelings of connection and possibility. She draws on her research and life events as she helps coaches and leaders make conversations into transformational experiences. She has provided executive coaching, training programs, and keynote speaking in 41 countries. Interviews and excerpts from Marcia’s books Outsmart Your Brain; The Discomfort Zone: How Leaders Turn Difficult Conversations into Breakthrough; and Wander Woman: How High-Achieving Women Find Contentment and Direction, have appeared in many places including Fast Company, Psychology Today, and The Wall Street Journal. Her latest book, Coach the Person, Not the Problem, became a bestseller the day it was released this past June. Marcia’s doctoral degree is in organizational psychology, and she has two master’s degrees in education and communications. She also feels she gained an invaluable education when she turned 20 in jail. With the support of her cellmates, she chose to rise back up and show the world she could succeed even when she was told she would fail. She went on to accumulate degrees, rise in male-dominated corporations, and now teaches leadership and coaching classes worldwide. She is recognized by the Global Gurus as the #5 coach in the world.   “Easy usually is a bad investment. You have to take your time and research your book well.” Marcia Reynolds   Worst investment ever Marcia always saw herself as a writer, and so when she left her last corporate job and had time, she wrote her first book. A friend insisted that she works with a certain woman to publish her book. She said that she would make life so easy for Marcia. The said publisher would make all the decisions, find all the people Marcia needed, do layout and covers, and anything else necessary to publish her book. Marcia would not have to worry about a thing. Hearing this made her quite excited since she had no experience. How nice it was to have someone do everything for her. A costly affair The publisher seemed a little expensive and kept charging her for stuff, but Marcia thought that meant she’d produce high-quality work and make her book a bestseller. She ended up spending $40,000, which she never made back. The biggest flop ever Marcia’s book was a colossal flop all because of the title the publisher chose. The publisher went with a title that Marcia thought was catchy. However, this title was the reason why Marcia’s book never got reviews and into bookstores. The title was The Rapture. Marcia had no idea that the word rapture had anything to do with any religion. Every bookstore thought the book was a Christian book. Marcia still has books sitting in her garage after losing a cool $40,000 to an inexperienced publicist. Lessons learned Always get references Before you hire people to work with, look at past experiences and what other people have said about them. If possible, talk to references to find the expertise of the person. Run your titles by your target audience Ask your audience what they think about your titles. You could do a survey monkey and have your fans help you choose the best titles. Be careful of the wow factor Be careful of people who make it sound like it’s going to be easy for you. Publishing your first book is not easy, so don’t let anyone tell you that it. If they do, then you shouldn’t work with them. Andrew’s takeaways Go for experience When looking for a publisher for your first book, go for people with proven expertise and experience. Check out their references to ascertain their expertise. You’ve got to put in the work If you want good results as you write your first book, you’ve got to work for it. Once you put in the work and the time you’ll give your book value and make it a bestseller. Work with people’s strengths It’s hard to find one person with all the strengths that are useful for your book. So when looking for people to work with, look for their strengths. This could be choosing a title, artwork, editing, etc. Actionable advice Publishing your first book is not as expensive as you think. There are good people out there for half the price, so don’t let the price fool you. So if you’ve been wondering how to find a publisher for my first book without spending a fortune, you just need to find the right people to work with. No. 1 goal for the next 12 months Marcia’s goal for the next 12 months is to launch a massive program called breakthrough coaching. This is a six months online program where people will learn how to change people’s thinking and help them have breakthroughs. Have you ever wished you could get that moment back when you let your emotions take over?  Do you want to make better choices and better decisions in the moment?  This is the podcast for you! My guest, Dr. Marcia Reynolds, MCC, is fascinated by the brain, especially what triggers feelings of connection, commitment, and possibility. She draws on her research as she helps coaches and leaders make every conversation is a difference-making experience. She has provided executive coaching and leadership training programs in 38 countries. Dr. Reynolds is a pioneer in the coaching profession. She was the 5th global president of the International Coach Federation and has returned to the board as a Global Director. She is also the training director for the Healthcare Coaching Institute at Virginia Tech, and on faculty for the International Coach Academy in Russia and Create China Coaching in China. She is recognized by the Global Gurus top 30 as the #5 coach in the world. She was one of the first to earn the designation of Master Certified Coach. Interviews and excerpts from Marcia’s books Outsmart Your Brain, and The Discomfort Zone: How Leaders Turn Difficult Conversations into Breakthroughs, and Wander Woman: How High-Achieving Women Find Contentment and Direction, have appeared in many places including Fast Company, Psychology Today, and The Wall Street Journal. Marcia’s doctoral degree is in organizational psychology and she has two master’s degrees in education and communications. Highlights from the Podcast: Information doesn’t change behavior, just because you ‘know’ something it doesn’t mean you will do it – there needs to be emotion involved.  The first step to being aware is managing your emotions and your energy.  Next you need to be curious because when you are with other people you need to think about how you are showing up with them.  For example, are you partnering with them and helping them move forward OR is your intention to just get them to do what you want them to do? Emotions are just energy moving through your body and it is important information to pay attention to that tells you what is going on in the moment – notice it and accept it.  Don’t label it good or bad, just notice it. Where in your body do you feel anger?  Notice it – it is different for everyone.  One tip to start noticing your emotions is to set a reminder on your phone 2 to 3 times a day to just track what you are feeling at the moment.  This can help make you more aware.  This is how you can start to build Reflective Intelligence – noticing the emotions is the first step. After you notice the emotion then you can go to what you want to feel instead – but you have to feel the shift.  You can’t just tell yourself to be patient – you have to do something to feel more patient.  For example, turn on some music or look at pictures to make you feel calmer.  You have to understand what your triggers are – what are people taking from you that makes you react?  For example, do you feel you are being respected, not safe or now being acknowledged?  The thing about triggers, (which she goes into much more deeply in her book and you can go to www.outsmartyourbrain.com and search for emotional triggers to download the list) is that whatever has made you successful in this life is what is going to be your emotional trigger because you are protecting it.  For example, if you want attention, control, order or accuracy and feel that any of those are being threatened, you will go on the defense.  This happens really quickly and when you realize what is happening you have the choice of (1) asking for that or (2) letting it go.  Being aware gives you more control in your response if you understand your reactions and why they are happening. If something is really important to you, the primitive brain kicks in because the brain is designed to protect you.  When we get defensive, it happens pretty quickly, and we react because we feel like someone is taking something from us or not giving us something we feel we deserve like respect or credibility.  It is a primitive reaction that happens quickly and we either react or shut down, we are either a flighter or fighter.  Now this could happen in the primitive brain, or if it bypasses the primitive brain, then it hits your social brain.  Then we have the social needs where I might feel embarrassed or disappointed or frustrated because I am not getting what I think I need.  This happens in the middle brain where you get defensive, you argue, you shut down or you feel embarrassed or sad.  This affects what you will say or not say and the actions you will take. It doesn’t hit your logical brain until all this other stuff comes into play, which we use to give ourselves great reasons as to why we reacted that way or why we said that thing!  (There is a great example of this in Chapter 1 of Outsmart your Brain). Once you start noticing these emotions – what can you do?  Well, first know that these never go away, just accept that you are human, and this is who you are and they will decrease.  You won’t stop being triggered and there will be certain people in your life that will trigger you more than others.  The more we acknowledge them the less power they have over us and we get triggered but it is not as strong.  There is a 4-step formula to shift your emotions:  Relax…Detach…Center….Focus. Relax – because it is biological, breathe and release the tension in your body, breathing is the quickest way to release the tension.  Do a body scan and relax your muscles. Detach – clear your brain and wipe it clean.  Center – Take a tip from professional athletes that are taught to shift their awareness to their center, which is at the bottom of your breath – the center of your body.  You take a deep breath in and notice the bottom of your breath – that is your center, your core.  When you can move your awareness there, you are more powerful.  Focus – choose the one or two words that represent how you want to feel and then feel those emotions before you speak. This is how you can make better choices in the moment – which leads to better outcomes.  The best part is this not only helps you at work, but it helps you at home. Great resources that you can leverage to learn more about this:  www.outsmartyourbrain.com and her books Outsmart your Brain and The Discomfort Zone. Last thing, people want you to be present more than they want you to be perfect.  Listen to what they have to say, this makes people feel valued and important without any words. I hope that you have enjoyed this and can start using some of these great techniques to build more self-awareness and have better conversations.  Make sure to subscribe to be alerted to ongoing podcasts.  You can reach me, Jill Windelspecht, directly by email at jillwindel@TalentSpecialists.net and visit my website at www.TalentSpecialists.net.
