Episode 143 Doe ID: 'Mentone John Doe' Derrick Burton  In October, 1991, a hunter in the area of Mentone, CA discovered a human skull. The skull was devoid of teeth and a mandible. Based on the size of the skull, it was estimated to be a child's. The San Bernardino County Sheriff's department searched the area for more remains but they didn't find any. However, they found a bag containing a child's clothing, and took it into evidence. An autopsy confirmed initial beliefs that the remains were that of a child; a young boy between 4 & 8 years old. A cause of death could not be determined. The authorities considered local missing persons cases, but didn't link the remains to any of those missing children, and the dead boy was referred to as 'Mentone John Doe'. It wasn't until decades later that the authorities turned to IGG to determine the identity of  Mentone John Doe. He turned out to be, Derrick Burton. Incredibly, Derrick had been reported missing to the San Bernardino County Sheriff's dept when he was four years old  by his mother Patricia Clark in 1991. How the agency failed to make the connection between Mentone John Doe, and Derrick Burton early on is a mystery. Derrick had gone missing while in the care of his stepfather; Christopher Hammond. Hammond did time for charges related to Derrick's abduction, but not his death.  Sadly, it doesn't seem as if there is much movement in the case since Derrick was identified, or how much his death is being investigated. 'Mentone John Doe' now has his name back; it's Derrick Burton, and this is his story.  To listen to every episode of DNA: ID ad-free and get other benefits, simply  visit our channel page on Apple Podcasts to get started with an AbJack Insider subscription. Meagan McCarthy, a former San Bernardino County Sheriff's Deputy is grateful to be alive. A firearm malfunction  would keep the p.o.s. suspect from executing her. If processing that critical incident wasn't enough, the state of California would be there to betray her as well. In California,  jurors that have implicit bias against police officer are allowed to serve on juries. Her constitutional rights violated, she was victimized a second time during this incident with the suspect receiving a  not guilty verdict. Meagan McCarthy could have allowed this tragedy to define her, instead she used it as a call to action. Meagan and I discuss the incident that started this  initiative and how she has become an advocate for our profession. What challenges have you faced that have ignited your passion?More about MeaganAs an advocate, I use my communication and show hosting skills to fight for the rights and well-being of victims and first responders. I have appeared on multiple Fox News segments as a contributor, sharing my insights and perspectives on law enforcement and mental health issues.I am working towards my completion of a bachelor's degree in psychology from National University, which helps me understand the psychological challenges and needs of those who have experienced trauma or violence. I am also a retired Deputy Sheriff, who served for over six years at the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department, until I was medically retired due to PTSD. In January 2024, six people were murdered in a remote part of San Bernardino County, California. Four of the bodies were burned. Days later, the San Bernardino County Sheriff said the murders were related to the black-market marijuana trade. In 2020, there was a seven-person homicide at an unlicensed marijuana cultivation site in Riverside County, California. When Californians voted to legalize and regulate marijuana in California in 2016, the legislation was touted as the “gold standard” and a model the nation would soon be following. Eight years later it's become a cautionary tale of crime, violence, unkept promises, and environmental destruction. The black-market controls approximately 90% of the California marijuana trade and the spill-over has hampered the attempts of other states to legalize. On this episode of the Truth Nation Podcast, retired California Highway Patrol Chief Mark Garrett and Retired DEA Special Agent in Charge Bill Bodner discuss what went wrong with marijuana legalization in California. Was it about regulated, taxed and tested marijuana or in reality, was it just an attempt at social justice reform? Does it make sense that California treats moonshine and unlicensed liquor trafficking as a felony but cultivation of 100,000 marijuana plants as a misdemeanor? What role does the federal governments' inaction on marijuana over the past 15 years play? Will de-scheduling or rescheduling make the situation better or worse? Tune in and hear the truth.

Now they want to tell their story on their own terms. A three-tribe coalition representing about 1,500 enrolled members is lobbying the federal government to designate nearly 40 square miles as a national monument. MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — Alabama will attempt to put an inmate to death with nitrogen gas, a never before used execution method that the state claims will be humane but critics call cruel and experimental. Kenneth Eugene Smith is scheduled to die Thursday night for his conviction in the 1988 murder-for-hire slaying of Elizabeth Sennett. This is Alabama's second attempt to execute the 58-year-old. His 2022 lethal injection was called off at the last minute because authorities couldn't connect the IV line. The execution will be the first attempt to use a new execution method since lethal injection was introduced in 1982. WASHINGTON (AP) — A Trump White House official who was convicted of contempt of Congress for refusing to cooperate with a congressional investigation into the U.S. Capitol attack is set to be sentenced. Prosecutors are asking a judge to sentence Peter Navarro on Thursday to six months behind bars. He was the second Trump aide to face contempt of Congress charges, after Steve Bannon. Navarro was found guilty of defying a subpoena for documents and a deposition from the House Jan. 6 committee. Navarro has vowed to appeal the verdict, saying he couldn't cooperate with the committee because Trump had invoked executive privilege. WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden has picked up the endorsement of the United Auto Workers. The Democratic president addressed the powerful union's political convention in Washington on Wednesday. He told a cheering crowd, “I'm honored to have your back and you have mine.” Biden is pushing to sway blue-collar workers his way in critical auto-making swing states such as Michigan and Wisconsin. Biden is hoping to cut into the advantage Republican former President Donald Trump has enjoyed with white voters who don't have a college degree. Labor experts say the UAW usually endorses candidates later, as it contains a mix of Democratic, Republican and unaffiliated voters. ROME (AP) — Pope Francis recalled the extermination of millions of Jews in calling Wednesday for the upcoming Holocaust Day of Remembrance to reaffirm that war can never be justified. At the end of his weekly general audience, Francis referred to Saturday's commemoration, which has become fraught this year given Israel's military campaign in Gaza and a rise in antisemitism in Europe and around the world. Italy's Jewish community has denounced a rise in antisemitic sentiment, including what leaders call the improper use of terms like “genocide,” following the Oct. 7 Hamas attacks in southern Israel and Israel's military response in Gaza. EL MIRAGE, Calif. (AP) — Authorities in Southern California say six people have been found dead in a remote area of the Mojave Desert. San Bernardino County Sheriff's spokesperson Mara Rodriguez says deputies responding to a request for a wellness check found five of the bodies Tuesday night along a dirt road off Highway 395 near El Mirage. A sixth body was found Wednesday morning. An SUV with a blown-out passenger window was found at the crime scene. The department's specialized investigations division is conducting the homicide investigation. The bodies have yet to be removed as they search for evidence. A Boeing 757 jet operated by Delta Air Lines lost a nose wheel while preparing for takeoff from Atlanta. Delta Flight 982 — headed to Bogota, Colombia — was taxiing for departure at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport when the incident took place around 11:15 a.m. Saturday, according to the Federal Aviation Administration, which is investigating the incident. The plane is 32 years old and is not the same model as the 737 Max that has raised safety concerns in recent years. Jim Harbaugh is headed back to the NFL, Doc Rivers will be the Bucks' next coach, Devin Booker scores 46 in a Suns win, and NHL scoring leader Nathan MacKinnon scores four goals for the Avalanche. Also,  the Titans hire Bengals offensive coordinator Brian Callahan as their head coach and five players from the 2018 Canada world junior team take a leave of absence from their clubs. NEW YORK (AP) — Comedian Jon Stewart is rewinding the clock, returning to “The Daily Show” as a weekly host and executive producing through the 2024 U.S. elections cycle. Comedy Central on Wednesday said Stewart will host the topical TV show every Monday starting Feb. 12. A rotating lineup of show regulars are on tap for the rest of the week. Former teen idol Bobby Sherman is 80 years old and still wowing them. He was born in Santa Monica, California and became interested in singing whilst at high school. Following his graduation, he was given the opportunity to sing for Sal Mineo's band at a party and eventually got a gig as house singer for the ABC show ‘Shindig!', which ran from 1964 to 1966. His luck changed drastically in 1968 when he was cast in the role of a stammering, bashful logger in the TV drama series ‘Here Come the Brides'. The series became a hit and established him as an actor. The following year Bobby released the song "Little Woman". The single charted #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 and eventually earned gold status. Bobby instantly became adored the world over and from the late 60s to the mid-70s, he toured extensively. A frequent guest on TV variety shows and featured in an episode of ‘The Partridge Family', he later had guest roles in several drama series including ‘Mod Squad,' ‘Murder She Wrote,' ‘Ellery Queen,' ‘Frasier,' ‘The Ed Sullivan Show,' 'Good Day LA,' ‘The Rosie O'Donnell Show,' ‘Entertainment Tonight,' and ‘Good Morning America,' to name a few. In 1981, Sherman starred in the musical comedy movie ‘Get Crazy'. Five years later, he joined the cast of the sitcom ‘Sanchez of Bel Air.' His versatility as an actor allowed him to seamlessly transition between comedic and dramatic roles, showcasing a depth beyond his teen idol persona. These television appearances further solidified his status as a well-rounded entertainer. After a 25-year absence, Bobby performed in "The Teen Idol Tour" in 1998 along with artists Davy Jones (The Monkees) and Peter Noone (Herman's Hermits). While his presence in the spotlight may have waned in recent years, his enduring appeal remains. Bobby Sherman scored so many hits during the late 60s and early 70s, including "Easy Come, Easy Go”, "Julie, Do Ya Love Me" and "La, La, La", all of which sold millions of copies and earned him gold discs. From 71 to 79, Bobby Sherman was married to his first wife. The couple had two sons, both of whom work in the entertainment industry today. In the 90s, Bobby joined the Los Angeles Police Department as a technical Reserve Police Officer. He was later promoted to Captain in the Department and began serving in San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department in 1999, eventually retiring in 2010. It was during this time that Bobby met his new wife, Brigitte Poublon. Together, the couple founded the not-for-profit Brigitte & Bobby Sherman Children's Foundation. In 1979 a 19-year-old woman was found brutally beaten and stabbed to death near what was then the Sahara Hotel near the Las Vegas Strip. For decades she remained a ‘Jane Doe' or as detectives nicknamed her, ‘Sahara Sue Doe'. In December of 2023 new DNA technology allowed a cold case detective with the Las Vegas Metro Police Department to contact a probable relative in California. The call paid off and Sahara Sue Doe became Gwenn Marie Story, a teenager from Cincinnati, Ohio who had initially planned a trip to California to find her real father. But the stop in Las Vegas with two male friends would prove deadly. Case #2, Detective Eric Ogaz with the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department talks about Scott Echols, an 8-year-old boy who, in 1992, answered the door at his home late one night and mysteriously disappeared.

September 4th, 2019 was a beautiful morning in the desert city of Victorville, California. For most residents in the neighborhood of the 13,000 block of Cabazon Court it was just another morning: quiet and uneventful. Inside one residence, however, chaos was brewing, and it would soon spill out onto the street, shattering the peace and quiet with screams and gunfire. By 8:35 that morning, 26-year-old Meagan McCarthy, a San Bernardino County Sheriff's Deputy, would be brutally beaten and shot at with her own gun. And the man who attacked her, 21-year-old Ari Young, would be shot six times by responding deputies. Surprisingly, Ari survived and went on to defend his actions in court. With much of the mayhem caught on video, the incident remained in headlines for years. The disturbing images scrutinized and reviewed on social media and television over and over, as tensions between law enforcement and the public rose across the nation. Four years later, the case came to a close with one of the most hotly debated verdicts in recent history. Was there a massive miscarriage of justice? Or, did the jury see something others didn't and get the verdict right? In what appeared to be an open and shut case, everyone involved would be reminded that what appears on video ..isn't always what it seems. As of Sunday, the city had 50,000 migrants in its care, including in local hotels and temporary shelters, and 49,700 local homeless residents, NBC4 reported. The influx of migrants crossing the southern border illegally has led to more migrants arriving in the Big Apple, some of whom have been bused in by Republican Texas Gov. Greg Abbott. The city has turned the historic Roosevelt Hotel, which closed three years ago, into a migrant shelter. “My heart breaks a little bit, and I have these conflicting feelings,” Deputy Mayor Anne Williams-Isom said during a tour of the hotel, according to NBC4. Democratic New York City Mayor Eric Adams has floated asking his residents to help shelter migrants in their homes, he said in early June. “It is my vision to take the next step to this, to go to the faith-based locales and then move to private residents, there are residents who are suffering right now because of economic challenges,” Adams said at the time. “They have spare rooms, they have locales and if we can find a way to get over the 30-day rule and other rules that government has in its place, we can take that $4.2 billion, $4.3 maybe now, that we potentially will have to spend, and we can put it back in the pockets of everyday New Yorkers, everyday houses of worship, instead of putting it in the pockets of corporations,” Adams added. Adams has also taken matters into his own hands by busing some of the arriving migrants to New York suburbs, including an area near the northern border, where the Daily Caller News Foundation previously observed some of them crossing into Canada illegally. Adams has also transported dozens of migrants to Republican-run states, like Florida and Texas, South America and one to China, Politico reported Friday. Adams’ office didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment. https://dailycaller.com/2023/06/26/fox-news-fires-remaining-tucker-staffers/ Fox News Fires Remaining Tucker Staffers In Show’s Final Stroke Fox News has fired the remaining staffers from Tucker Carlson’s show as the network announces a new primetime lineup, Daily Caller confirmed Monday. The network let go of at least nine remaining staffers, including long-standing producers, in a move described as “shockingly callous” by one former Fox News producer who spoke to the Daily Caller. “Some of the producers fired have been at Fox for well over a decade,” the producer told the Daily Caller. Another former Fox producer told the Daily Caller that staffers on Carlson’s team were repeatedly told following his departure that their jobs were safe, including as recently as last week when two of Carlson’s producers left the network. The remaining staffers were told they could apply for any jobs throughout the company, the former producer told the Daily Caller, noting that employees who once staffed Bill O’Reilly and Dan Bongino’s show were simply reassigned on other shows after both hosts left the network. Staffers told the former producer the terminations were clearly an “anti-Tucker move to purge any of his remaining stamp he had on the network as Fox begins this new lineup change.” The news comes after Fox News announced that Jesse Watters will replace Carlson in the 8:00 p.m. time slot. Watters, who originally started his career at the 8:00 p.m. time slot hosting a Man on the Street segment during Bill O’Reilly’s program, is slated to take over the hour, Fox News said in a press release. Laura Ingraham will take over Watters’ 7:00 p.m. time slot while Greg Gutfeld will move his show to the 10:00 p.m. time slot. Sean Hannity will remain in his 9:00 p.m. slot. Fox announced in late April it was parting ways with Carlson just days after the network announced it was also parting ways with Dan Bongino. Carlson has since started hosting his own show on Twitter, prompting a public legal battle between Fox News and the Daily Caller co-founder. Fox News issued a “cease and desist” to Carlson in mid-June after accusing him of breaching his contract by violating its non-compete clause when he posted the first episode of his show on Twitter. https://www.npr.org/2023/06/27/1149982782/julian-sands-dead-a-room-with-a-view Actor Julian Sands found dead in California after going missing on hike The San Bernardino County Sheriff's office has confirmed the death of Julian Sands after human remains were found on Southern California's Mount Baldy. He was 65 years old. He was hiking Mount Baldy when his family reported him missing on January 13, 2023. Sands had a wide and varied career but was best known for his role in the 1985 movie A Room with a View, starring opposite Helena Bonham Carter. Sands learned acting at the Central School of Speech and Drama in London. In A Room with a View, he played George Emerson, a love interest to the young upper-class Lucy Honeychurch, played by Carter. In 1986, he told NPR in an interview that he was well aware of the class dynamics at play in the movie. "Nobody's actually seen to do anything other than live some leisurely life which allows them to pursue their own indulgences," he said. Sands' acting career brought him an eclectic array of roles. His film credits include Arachnophobia, Leaving Las Vegas, and the Jackie Chan movie The Medallion. On TV, he appeared in small roles on shows such as Castle, Smallville and Dexter. In Season 5 of the action drama 24, he played the main villain Vladimir Bierko, a terrorist in possession of a deadly nerve gas. He loved the outdoors. In a 2020 interview with The Guardian, he was asked when he was happiest. His answer was: "Close to a mountain summit on a glorious cold morning." Now in entertainment news… https://boundingintocomics.com/2023/06/26/the-flash-collapses-in-its-second-weekend-at-the-box-office-with-massive-72-drop-analyst-predicts-film-will-lose-at-least-150-million/ ‘The Flash’ Collapses In Its Second Weekend At The Box Office With Massive 72% Drop, Analyst Predicts Film Will Lose At Least $150 Million Ezra Miller’s The Flash completely collapsed at the box office with an enormous 72% drop from its opening weekend. The Flash had a long row to hoe after it’s extremely poor opening weekend of $55 million at the domestic box office. And it does not look like it’s going to be reaping anything but losses following its second weekend collapse of 72%. The-Numbers reports the film only grossed $15.2 million in its second weekend despite adding another 22 more theaters compared to its first weekend. The per theater gross declined from $13,000 in its opening weekend to $3,587 in its second weekend. The film’s second weekend much like its first underperformed predictions. Box office tracking website Box Office Pro predicted the film would have a 69% drop and bring in $17.3 million. The-Numbers predicted the film would only have a 59% decline and would bring in $22.5 million. Comparing the film to other DCEU films, The Flash is one of the worst performing films as it stands right now. The only films it’s outperformed at the worldwide box office are Birds of Prey, The Suicide Squad, Wonder Woman 1984, and Shazam! Fury of the Gods. Following this second weekend, box office analyst OMB Reviews predicts The Flash will only bring in a total gross between $300 million to $400 million worldwide in its entire theatrical run. However, he goes on to note, “roughly between $300 and $350 million dollars if the film performs as a typical bad movie.” That means it will likely stay in the same position it is on the DCEU list given Shazam! grossed $363.5 million and Black Adam brought in $391.2 million. OMB Reviews then points to the reported cost of the film being between $200 million and $220 million. He notes this means the film will likely lose around $150 million due to his estimated predictions that the film’s total cost with marketing is approximately $330 million. Factoring in the film’s split with theaters, he predicts the film’s break even point is $550 million. Thus if the film performs at the top of his estimates at $400 million, it would lose $150 million.

My guest today is Jordan Robison. This episode is a follow up to last week's Critical Incident Review about the August 18, 2021, shooting that occurred when the San Bernardino Police Department's SWAT Team attempted to arrest a suspect who had ambushed and attempted to murder a San Bernardino County Sheriff's Deputy the day before. When the team performed a vehicle takedown the suspect immediately opened fireon the team with a 10mm handgun, striking Jordan in both forearms, his shoulder, his femur, his stomach below the armor and a grazing wound to his ribs. He was also hit in the abdomen which was stopped by his armor. After last week's episode we received several calls and emails asking about Jordan so we decided to do a follow up episode with him to discuss his recovery and his personal lessons learned. There is a great deal of very valuable information on this episode which we hope will help others who are affected by an on-duty shooting.

Christopher Jordan Dorner (June 4, 1979[2] – February 12, 2013) was a former officer of the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) who, beginning on February 3, 2013, committed a series of shootings in Orange County, Los Angeles County, Riverside County and San Bernardino County in the U.S. state of California.[3] The victims were law enforcement officers and the daughter of a retired police captain. Dorner killed four people and wounded three others. On February 12 he died during a standoff with the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department after a shootout at a cabin in the San Bernardino Mountains.A manifesto posted by Dorner on social media declared "unconventional and asymmetric warfare" upon the LAPD, their families and their associates unless the department admitted publicly he was fired in retaliation for reporting excessive force.[4][5][6][7][8]In two separate incidents during the manhunt, police shot at three civilians unrelated to Dorner, mistaking their pickup trucks for the vehicle he was driving (a dark gray 2005 Nissan Titan).[9] One of the civilians was hit by the police gunfire, another was wounded by shattered glass, and a third was injured when police rammed his vehicle and opened fire. The officers involved were not charged with any crime. This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/1198501/advertisement

Detective Eric Ogaz with the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department talks to Steve about Scott Echols, an 8-year-old boy who, in 1992, answered the door at his home late one night and was never seen again.

Most people listening to this podcast have probably heard of serial killers such as Ted Bundy, Jeffrey Dahlmer, Rose & Fred West, Ian Brady, Myra Hindley. The lives and crimes of these notorious killers have been documented thoroughly by police, the media and producers who have gone on to make documentaries and films about their horrific crimes. We know who most, if not all, of their victims are. Not all serial killers receive such infamy and glorification. We don’t know a lot about their background or their movements over the years and I have a feeling we have barely scratched the surface when it comes to identifying all the victims of the man we will be discussing today. He is known to have killed at least 2 of his romantic partners, suspected of murdering a third, killed 2 children, one whom was his own daughter, and abused and abandoned another young child, yet remarkably was only ever convicted of one of these crimes. In this episode, we will explore the cases he is known to be connected to and a few more that he is rumoured to have committed also. Let's cover the disappearances of Laureen Rahn, Denise Denault, Denise Beaudin and the murder of Eunsoon Jung, Marlyse Honeychurch, Marie Vaughn, Sara McWaters and the Middle child Jane Doe. Christopher Lee’s trial for the first degree murder of Erin Corwin was finally underway, after years of legal maneuvering and delays by the defense. Erin’s friends and family had gone on the stand, and authorities had testified on the evidence the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department had collected. An expert said there was a 1 in 16 billion chance that DNA samples found in the mineshaft where Chris dumped Erin’s body belonged to anyone else. It seemed like the case was closed. But then, something unusual happened. On Thursday, October 27, the defense called their first and only witness: Christopher Lee. Shanna Hogan's Secrets of a Marine's Wife is out everywhere now. Hundreds of volunteers and law enforcement officers spent eight weeks and over 5,000 hours searching for Erin Corwin. In the end, the discovery of Erin’s body at the bottom of a mineshaft in Joshua Tree National Park was a big deal — and not just because the search had been so difficult. Without a body, it would have been almost impossible to convict Erin’s killer. And shortly after she went missing, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department was almost positive they knew who killed Erin Corwin. In this presentation, Dr. Joshua Taylor outlines common psychological issues facing veterans from the various military branches, exploring commonalities and differences among them. He begins by addressing the thinking, feeling and behaving aspects of military functioning and military life. This is often overlooked in the therapeutic setting, by the veterans, their families and the therapist. Understanding these important elements can shed light on the issues being addressed. Dr. Taylor also addresses the critical differences and distinctions that separate the veteran from the civilian population, and why recognizing these differences is an important part of successful therapy. Learning Objectives: After viewing this lecture, participants will be able to: Describe the different branches of the military and what their respective roles often are in shaping the psyche of the veteran. Understand the roles of cognition, emotion and behavior regarding PTSD and vicarious trauma. Identify key concepts that can assist the therapist in treating veterans. Explain how and why understanding the “military way of life” is critical to establishing the therapeutic relationship. Speeker Bio: Dr. Joshua Taylor is a clinical psychologist and currently the regional program manager at the San Bernardino County behavioral health center. He is a published author and has presented to a wide variety of universities, organizations and conferences on issues relating to veterans’ mental health, PTSD and trauma. Dr. Taylor serves as an adjunct faculty member at the University of Phoenix and is considered an expert on trauma. He has provided behavioral health staff training on mental illness, as well as oversight of crisis intervention training for law enforcement programs. In addition, he has been a regional MHSA Housing Program liaison. Dr. Taylor is a past member of the Orange County Disaster Response Team and a sworn civilian member of the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Search and Rescue Team. He also has been recognized by the Orange County Health Care Agency and Orange County Superior Court for his training on veterans’ issues and emergency response activities.
