The first of what is hoped to become an annual event, the Mister T's 3 on 3 Hoop Jam is scheduled to take place on September 2nd at Northeast Park. Harry Russell is one of the organizers of the event and he joined Wake Up Tri-Counties on Monday to invite people to register their teams. Multiple divisions will be open for Boys 1st grade the High School, Girls 5th Grade through High School, Adults 18 to 23, and Open ages for a mens 3 on 3. Writer-director-showrunner Peter Mitchell snuck me into a couple of episodes of one of his hit shows -- and yet he still talks to me! On this podcast, we have a great conversation about Murdoch Mysteries, back for a 16th season starting September 12 on CBC.We also talk about the other hour-long Canadian TV drama he executive produces for Shaftesbury, Hudson & Rex. Mitchell supervises 24 episodes of Murdoch in Toronto, flies to St. John's, and cracks the whip on another 20 episodes of Rex. Some of his performers literally work like dogs!!So does Mitchell, who took over Murdoch as that series found new life on CBC after five years on Citytv. He opened up the storylines on that whodunnit, taking full advantage of all the historical possibilities (electric cars? Stan Laurel and Charlie Chaplin? After establishing himself in the local music scene, he joined organist Jack McDuff’s group for two years 1984-85. When McDuff wasn’t on the road (literally traveling by van all over the country) they worked a steady four-night a week gig at Dude’s Lounge in Harlem. His first break, this turned out to be an invaluable experience, paying his dues night after night with the soulful jazz organist. It was at Dude’s Lounge that Stryker met tenor saxophonist Stanley Turrentine, who would occasionally sit in. After leaving McDuff, Turrentine asked Stryker to join his quintet. From 1986-1995 he played with the legendary saxophonist at all the major festivals, concert halls, and clubs throughout the world. He is featured on two Turrentine CD’s (Stanley recorded Stryker’s tune “Sidesteppin”). With Turrentine, Stryker was able to play with such jazz greats as Dizzy Gillespie and Freddie Hubbard. The ten years playing alongside the tenor legend helped Stryker realize the importance of having his own sound. Dave continued to work with Stanley and was with him during his final week at the Blue Note in NYC, when he passed in Sept. 2000.Early on Stryker realized that as much as he loved playing standards and the jazz repertoire he had to have something of his own to give to the music. He feels that his writing combined with his playing is what shapes his musical expression. He has recorded and published over 150 of his own compositions and has released “The Dave Stryker Songbook” with most of his original music. Also 18 of the compositions (from the first five SteepleChase CD’s) are compiled in the book: “The Music of Dave Stryker” (SteepleChase Music) which can be ordered on this website.Some of the other artists who have recorded Dave’s music are: Stanley Turrentine, Kevin Mahogany, Victor Lewis, and Steve Slagle. Quand on n'est pas reconnu comme un être sexué, quand on n'a pas accès à l'autre, quand on n'est pas à égalité, quand on a des difficultés à se déplacer, d'avoir accès aux lieux de rencontres, c'est une problématique. Quand on pense qu'une personne en situation de handicap ne peut pas avoir une vie intime.” - Ivanka GuillaumeIvanka Guillaume est d'origine guadeloupéenne. A l'âge de 3 ans, une maladie l'a rendue paraplégique. Elle a grandi en banlieue parisienne où elle a été élevée par sa tante et son oncle car c'était trop difficile pour sa mère célébataire de s'occuper d'un enfant en fauteuil-roulant. Elle est diplômée d'un master en études japonaises. Aujourd'hui, elle étudie à l'université métropolitaine de Tokyo grâce à une bourse d'excellence du gouvernement japonais. Elle se penche sur les mouvements de personnes en situation de handicap et surtout l'expérience particulière des femmes.  Elle parle de ses recherches et notamment des 16.000 stérilisations sans consentement réalisées sous la loi eugénique japonaise d'après-guerre et qui était en place jusqu'en 1996, Elle parle de la réalité d'être en fauteuil roulant et l'isolation que ça peut induire. La franco-chilena publica su primera novela 'Mister T et moi' (Editions Marabout). Una comedia romántica desternillante basada en su vida de estudiante en la facultad de Derecho. Rojas cuenta la historia de un amor no correspondido entre ella, que va en silla de ruedas, y un amigo sin discapacidad. “Desde el primer día le amo y él no me ama”, escribe Rojas en el libro lleno de humor, muy politizado y que hace volar por los aires prejuicios y estereotipos. Elisa Rojas nació en 1979 en Santiago de Chile con una enfermedad rara genética que se llama "osteogénesis imperpecta", también llamada enfermedad de los huesos de cristal, y que tiene como consecuencia que se debiliten los huesos y que se bloquee el crecimiento, lo que le obliga a ir en silla de ruedas. De muy pequeña se mudó a Francia con su familia. En París estudió Derecho hasta convertirse en abogada. Fue en la facultad donde tomó conciencia de que la gente con discapacidad es segregada en Francia. “Las personas con discapacidad tienen que vivir como los otros, o con la familia o en su propia casa, pero no en lugares especiales. No tiene sentido. Estos lugares, ahora todo el mundo está al corriente, son peligrosos, hay muchos abusos de todo tipo y el problema es que en Francia no quieren salir de este sistema, tienen una visión de la discapacidad que es biomédica y me parece que hay que salir de esa visión para ir hacia una visión más social”, cuenta la abogada, quien como explica en el libro, sufrió ella misma acoso en una de estas instituciones especializadas.   En su libro ‘Mister T et moi’, escrito en francés, la protagonista se ve confrontada a la realidad de enamorarse de un hombre sin discapacidad y se hace mil preguntas, entre ellas: “Mi madre me dijo que buscara a un chico en silla de ruedas. Pero tal vez el chico en cuestión tiene ganas de poder elegir, ¿por qué no podríamos tener la posibilidad de elegir?”. Para Rojas la respuesta está clara, “todo el mundo tiene que tener derecho a elegir” y es la sociedad la que pone barreras. “Lo que me interesaba era explicar cómo funciona el capacitismo en las relaciones afectivas, amorosas y sexuales, me parecía muy importante. Es un tema que está muy mal tratado por los periodistas. Quería escribir un libro que empoderara a las mujeres con discapacidad y que sirviera a todas las mujeres”, explica Rojas que ya en 2016 cofundó el Colectivo Lucha y discapacidad para la Igualdad y la Emancipación. En su manifiesto denuncian “la institucionalización como única respuesta a las necesidades reales o supuestas de las personas con discapacidad”. Elisa Rojas tiene como modelo a la congresista demócrata estadounidense Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez o a la diputada francesa de izquierdas Danièle Obono; y si se trata de hombres, los que le inspiran son Salvador Allende y el Che Guevara. Su lucha contra el capacitismo es una cuestión de justicia y de igualdad. “El capacitismo es un sistema de opresión que erige a las personas sin discapacidad en norma y que establece una jerarquía entre los cuerpos y los seres humanos. Yo lucho contra esto porque me parece que es un problema de desigualdad e injusticia, un problema político”, analiza.  Feminista de izquierdas, Elisa Rojas es muy activa en las redes sociales y cuenta cada vez más en el debate público francés. Últimamente Twitter le suspendió su cuenta junto a otras mujeres por el hecho de preguntar la siguiente cuestión: "¿Qué se puede hacer para que los hombres dejen de violar?”. “Es muy hipócrita porque el problema es que cuando los hombres amenazan o insultan a las mujeres, a las feministas, en las redes sociales no pasa nada y cuando las feministas plantean un pregunta tan importante, Twitter suspende las cuentas, me parece muy peligroso”, afirma Rojas. #EscalaenParís está en Facebook. Sometimes a picture is worth a thousand words ... uh ... ummmm. Okay, fine. First, in Rocky, Rocky overcomes tremendous odds and takes a beating from Apollo Creed losing a split decision and possibly suffering traumatic brain injury. That last bit is mere speculation on my part. In Rocky II, much the same happens - including the apparent brain injury - but this time Rocky wins. The producers of both movies also win-sans the brain injury - by making a lot of money. So naturally, here comes Rocky III. This time, in a nod to Bergman, Rocky's biggest opponent is himself and his place in a world where God is silent and Mister T is loud. Rocky spends much of the first have of the film wandering through his own personal Gethsemane pleading with Mickey to stay with him whilst being tormented by T (Clubber Lang), "Balboa, your family doin' real nice, ain't it? You call yourself a fighter? Prove it now. Gimme that same chance!" Rocky ends up fighting Clubber not once but twice and both gives and receives a tremendous beating, possibly - and again this is speculation - further exacerbating his traumatic brain injury. He also engages in water sports and horseplay with Apollo, and as a reward, is gifted by Apollo with a pair his used boxing trunks. Triumph and self redemption can't be far away, or can they?
