Sherry Shannon-Vanstone is a mathematician, cryptographer, entrepreneur and philanthropist. She founded Profound Impact in 2018? Profound Impact's mission is ‘to connect great people to do great things'.She had an early interest in mathematics and learned along her dad who's was studying to be an electrical engineer. By the time she was in 5th grade, she tested her aptitudes and she scored 10th grade.Sherry started her career working as a cryptographer for the US government before moving on to start-ups in Silicon Valley and then Canada. She was an innovator in technology and in leadership.Along with her late husband, they took the technology that was used for smartphones and applied it to vehicle: they needed security, authentification, etc. They quickly became security experts for the US Department of Transportation.She loves being an entrepreneur because ‘you can see the impact that you're making. You're hiring people and touch every one of those lives. Julia is an ‘expression mentor'. She specialises in working with introverted and anxiety-prone women who have a history of public speaking fear or performance anxiety and it's holding them back in their careers or from growing their business.Julia initially trained as an actress and then became a yoga teacher. Eventually she wanted more and she started teaching yoga teachers about their voice and about how to be confident in the spotlight before she transitioned to working with professionals and entrepreneurs.The progression of her work as a public speaking coach has also mirrored the progression of her own growth. She came to realise that she was an anxious and introverted person and that it was exhausting her. So she started diving into nervous system regulation techniques. This led her to specialise in working with introverted women and helping them to regulate their nervous system, take care of their energy, manage their lifestyle and transform them into authentic, powerhouse speakers.Julia encourages them to remember that the world needs their voice. Lilian Sue is a PR coach and publicist. She helps creative entrepreneurs to build healthy PR mindsets and a successful PR strategy.Lilian grew up in a very traditional Chinese Canadian family. She explains the difficulties that she's had in pushing against the cultural traditions and the strict family roles, and what it's meant to her to live the life that she wanted.She learnt very early on to put boundaries in place and have ‘No Go Zones' in order to maintain somewhat of a positive relationship with her parents.One of the early pieces of entrepreneurship advice that she got from mentors have been ‘Don't take advice from somebody who's never been there'. Because anything they tell you is not going to give you the answer that you need, or that you're looking for, to move forward. Jennifer Hicks is the Director of Client & Business Development at Capital Fund Law Group. She speaks about transitioning from her role as a police officer to working in corporate. She is also a strong champion of women and specifically addresses why women sabotaging other women.When she first started her career as a police officer, she was treated with a lot of respect. But when she moved into another department, she experienced harassment and discrimination. She finally spoke out, filed a complaint and managed to restore her reputation. But she was emotionally broken.She left law enforcement and started a new adventure as an administrative assistant at Capital Fund Law Group and quickly climbed the ladder to her current position as Director of Client & Business Development. She saw many similarities between how women were perceived in the corporate world and how they were perceived in law enforcement. But a particular event in the corporate world started her thinking about why some women sabotage others. As she puts it: ‘I don't want them to have to go through the vile, awful things and business that some women have had to go through, just to understand how corporate works, and to network and to get ahead doesn't mean having to do things that are against your character'.As a result, she put together a group of women to talk through why some women are sabotaging others and to help women in corporate like. Sheena Simpson completed a Master's degree in Asian History at the University of Sydney and specialized in the development of the Indian railways. She traveled to India on five separate occasions from 1989 to 2005 where she experienced first hand what it was like to travel on the railways.In her thesis, she studied the economic and social impact of railways on the Indian population, but also the harsh working conditions. Jill Philips is the author of "Lamlash Street, a portrait of 1960s, postwar London through one family's story". In this episode, Jill talks about why it was so important for her to write a book about growing up in Cockney London after the war.From food rationing to swimming lessons, Jill gives us an insight into the reality of life in the heart of Cockney London only a few short decades ago.She talks about her relationship with her mother and how unusual it was for her mother to have insisted on Jill pursuing an education after the age of 16, especially in a culture where men traditionally made all the decisions for the family and girls' education was not a priority.In writing the book, she came to understand how important family was to her and what a strong support system she had had growing up, with family and friends all living close by. This gave her a sense of safety and helped her to succeed later in life.It took her three years to write the book, with the help of a writing coach. Staci and Brooke work together at rebellion energy in Oklahoma. Staci is the president and CEO and Brooke is the senior engineering and geological technician. They are also the co-founders of Fellow Environmental Partners, a non-profit focussed on plugging orphaned oil and gas wells in an effort to reduce methane emissions.Staci and Brooke wanted to do something different for their next project. They were throwing around ideas and started to think about abandoned wells. The more they learnt about the methane emissions and water contamination caused by abandoned oil wells, the more they realised that no one was focussing on the massive environmental damage being caused and how to stop it.It is a highly technical issue with huge social and environmental impacts. There are hundreds of thousands of orphaned wells - under schools, under houses or under agricultural land. Some are visible - some are not. They can be thought of as wells whose legal owner cannot be found, most becoming wards of the state. The costs of plugging a well are huge. Average well costs begin at $20,000 to plug. Staci and Brooke believe that many people in the oil and gas industry care about the environment and opportunities are increasing to use their expertise and resources available to create a positive impact. Durant un séminaire avec Claude Lévi-Strauss, elle décide de son sujet de thèse et se focalise sur la santé et plus particulièrement la perception des maladies, sujet totalement nouveau en psychologie sociale en France à cette époque. Sa these est un succès, sera traduite en anglais et sera suivie par l'écriture d'un livre. Elle a ensuite commencé un nouveau projet d'observation en milieu hospitalier et a progressivement développé des contacts avec l'INSERM.Comme elle le décrit, elle a eu beaucoup de chance, dans ses rencontres par exemple, mais elle dit aussi: 'je n avais pas la moindre idée mais j'y suis allée quand même'.Ça demandait du courage mais néanmoins Claudine ne se perçoit pas comme une féministe ‘aggressive', elle a peu ressenti de discrimination en tant que femme. Elisabeth is the Senior Manager of the Marine Conservation Program of the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) in Bangladesh. Her main focus is on protecting threatened marine megafauna.Elisabeth grew up in Switzerland and started her career as a teacher. In 2002, she moved to Bangladesh, married a Bangladeshi and ‘fell into' conservation work. When she was working as a tour guide in the Sundarban forest, she and her husband became aware of the lack of protection of aquatic ecosystems in Bangladesh. Thanks to her encounter with Brian Smith, a mentor from the Wildlife Conservation Society, she began a program for protecting threatened marine megafauna. She talks in detail about the successes of the program, both in protecting the megafauna and in obtaining the support of the local people.Although there are difficulties in living in Bangladesh, Elisabeth finds that there is a lot of space for creativity and innovation and the freedom to try things out. Getrude Matshe was born in Zimbabwe and grew up in London and New Zealand. Her main activity is her company ‘Her Story Circle' and she is also a writer, a coach and a textile artist.Getrude is a life force. She is aligned with her gifts and follows her intuition - she has had an incredible life! She was not afraid to quit a job with no Plan B and 3 children to feed and she is always coming up with new business ideas!After a period of depression and a strange accident, Getrude set up Women Circles ‘to bring women together to share their stories, to inspire, to motivate and to be the light at the end of somebody else's tunnel'. She posted her business idea on Facebook and it went viral.She also mentors women on how to speak and her idea evolved into a social impact movement with a vision that every woman who comes to the platform is not only coming to speak, she is coming to teach. Getrude curates all of these stories through her publishing company into a series of books. She harnesses women's intellectual ideas and helps repackage and sell them.She has also been hired to set up women's cooperatives throughout Africa.In South Africa, for example, the women make necklaces with beads, then take a picture of themselves with the art piece and their story and send it to Getrude on WhatsApp. Then she sells the necklaces through her website and people get to meet the woman who's made the necklace. Diane Quinn is the co-founder and artistic director of ‘Unseen Theatre', an audio podcast showcasing original plays featuring female protagonists.She is also a professional dancer, singer, actor, choreographer, director, company manager and playwright.Diane trained in ballet as a child and then went into musical theatre, regional and national theatre and film and television. Eventually, through dancing and singing and focusing on the musical aspect of her career, she transitioned into becoming an actor.She always knew that she wanted to perform in character because she loved reading plays as a child and enjoys inhabiting character and learning about the lives that she hasn't led.Her latest project, ‘Unseen Theatre', is an audio podcast that showcases original plays that have not yet been produced. Medusa Tn est une rappeuse tunisienne qui s'est faite connaître pendant le printemps arabe avec son titre ‘Tounsiya Fière De L'être'. Aujourd'hui elle habite en Île-de-France où elle poursuit ses études d'ingénieur.Initialement elle a voulu rapper pour donner le point de vue d'une femme tunisienne dans un contexte où il n'y avait que des rappeurs hommes. Elle aborde des sujets politiques et sociaux mais toujours d'un point de vue féministe. Son message et ses chansons sont devenus un porte voix pour beaucoup de femmes dans le monde arabe, en particulier pendant le printemps arabe.Medusa n'a pas froid aux yeux : elle a notamment créé un flash mob avec une association de défense du droit à l'avortement des femmes en Tunisie dans un contexte politique difficile et dangereux.Medusa est aussi maman et passionnée par les nouvelles technologies. She is now an instructional designer and continues to act as a mentor.Helping and advising people brings a lot of joy to Pamela, so it's no surprise that she found herself mentoring people quite organically.In the corporate world, people tend to use mentoring as a tool to jump to the next level. Natalia is the country director at the Wildlife Conservation Society in Cuba. She is a herpetologist, has a PhD from Columbia University and is a specialist in the American crocodile.From Columbia University in New York to working with crocodiles in the mangroves of Cuba, Natalia tells us about her work as a woman in conservation and particularly with crocodiles. From surveying nesting sites to jumping out of boats to capture crocodiles in nets at night, her job is definitely not for the faint hearted!Natalia also participated in the creation of a new marine protected area. Hanan recently retired from her position as General Secretary for Northeast Africa for Danone.She was born in Egypt but has lived in many countries and her career has been far from to linear.Hanan chose to stay at home when she had her two children and was terrified when she returned to work. She felt as many women do - that the world had changed. Gemma Sisia grew up in Australia and has been living in Tanzania for the past 20 years. In 2002, she founded the School of St. Jude, a charity school in the Arusha Region of Tanzania. Today the school has more than 1800 students.Gemma saw for herself how her parents always made school fees the priority, even when times were tough. When she graduated as a maths and science teacher and had the opportunity to teach in Tanzania, she did. But in the mid- 90's, many of the students she was teaching had to leave because they were losing their parents to AIDS and weren't able to pay the school fees. That really upset her.Back in Australia she told her parents: ‘I'm going to build a school in Africa that doesn't charge school fees'. She was under 25 and thanks to her vision and a friend's $10 donation, she opened a bank account and started fundraising.When she arrived in Tanzania in 2001 , she built the first classrooms in six months. Nikki is an American film director and producer based in Paris. She speaks about working in the film industry as a woman and as a mother.Nikki studied film in Paris and quickly realised that it was a male dominated industry. Luckily, she had a lot of support from women. She started freelancing as a journalist and producer for CNN in Paris straight out of school, then freelanced for a few years until she created her own creative agency.Nikki is passionate about avoiding biais towards women in the film industry. 'It's important to have women in the film industry so that they can tell real and accurate stories that portray them as people and not just as women looking for love interests. When you start giving women cameras and the freedom to film things, you start getting some very interesting scenes and very different viewpoints.'Nikki lost a pregnancy at 5 months. Janepher has been involved with School for Life Uganda from the very beginning (2009). She is now Director of Community and Welfare.She lived a happy life in Kampala until she was 16 years old. Both her parents then died within a year and she became responsible for her 3 younger siblings. Life was tough. She remembered her father's words: "It is only you who can support yourself to get out of any kind of situation. And you have the solution to every problem that comes your way".She saw how hard it was for her to acquire an education so she decided to learn to be a Montessori teacher. She wanted to give back to children in the same situation as herself.She joined the School for Life as a teacher and today her work involves making sure that the children are well mentally, physically and psychologically. The School for Life is impacting the whole community, not only the children.
