Many have heard the popular adage "with age comes wisdom." It rings true for members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints living faithfully into their 70s, 80s and 90s. While change is a constant in life and living longer increases experiences of loss, older Church members find comfort as they strive to connect deeper with their families and serve their neighbors and loved ones. They find out there is still room to create, to inspire, to learn and to grow. This episode of the Church News podcast features Norman C. Hill, former mission president in the Ghana Accra West and Sierra Leone Freetown missions. He is an affiliate associate professor at BYU's Ballard Center for Social Impact. Today he shares “keys to growing older without getting old” while leaning on gospel principles of faith, service and compassion. The Church News Podcast is a weekly podcast that invites listeners to make a journey of connection with members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints across the globe. Host Sarah Jane Weaver, reporter and editor for The Church News for a quarter-century, shares a unique view of the stories, events, and most important people who form this international faith. With each episode, listeners are asked to embark on a journey to learn from one another and ponder, “What do I know now?” because of the experience. Produced by KellieAnn Halvorsen. Offizier... “Die Guten und die Galaxis”. Ein FYEO Original. On this episode of “Active Allyship…it's more than a #hashtag!” …Sunni and Lisa hear first hand accounts of Norman C. Neverson's (Sunni's Uncle) journey from hardship to haven through an educational system, specifically designed to exclude him. Honestly, it feels like you're eavesdropping as little known facts are revealed, get ready for the big twist! Here is some information on the Closing of Prince Edward County's Schools from www.virginiahistory.org Our guest, Norman Neverson was one of the children affected. After Virginia's school-closing law was ruled unconstitutional in January 1959, the General Assembly repealed the compulsory school attendance law and made the operation of public schools a local option for the state's counties and cities. Schools that had been closed in Front Royal, Norfolk, and Charlottesville reopened because citizens there preferred integrated schools to none at all. It was not so in Prince Edward County. Ordered on May 1, 1959, to integrate its schools, the county instead closed its entire public school system. The Prince Edward Foundation created a series of private schools to educate the county's white children. These schools were supported by tuition grants from the state and tax credits from the county. Prince Edward Academy became the prototype for all-white private schools formed to protest school integration. No provision was made for educating the county's black children. Some got schooling with relatives in nearby communities or at makeshift schools in church basements. Others were educated out of state by groups such as the Society of Friends. In 1963–64, the Prince Edward Free School picked up some of the slack. But some pupils missed part or all of their education for five years.Cali by Wataboi https://soundcloud.com/wataboiCreative Commons — Attribution 3.0 Unported — CC BY 3.0Free Download / Stream: https://bit.ly/wataboi-caliMusic promoted by Audio Library https://youtu.be/qXptaqHIH5g

A Wagon of Trailers to the Stars. Movie trailers…they tease, they excite, and if crafted properly, have the ability to stir our imaginations into a frenzy of anticipation for…the next trailer! But seriously, movie trailers are a time honored tradition amongst film fans and in this case Star Trek fans. They have the power to inspire, to create wonder, and to fuel the imagination for the eventual theatrical release of the next installment in the Star Trek film franchise. For this show, we are going to actually step into Mr. AtoZ' Atavachron and set the temporal parameters between 1979 and 1989 as we travel back time and in memory. As we begin to ramp up to Star Trek BEYOND, we are going to take a look at a select group of Star Trek movie trailers from the first 10 years; starting with The Motion Picture and through to Star Trek V. Let's all take a transmat beam down memory lane as we try to recall the feelings and emotions that we experienced when we first saw these trailers either in the theaters or on TV. So please sit back, relax and breathe deeply as Mr. AtoZ sets the controls of his Atavachron to 1979 and hopefully Schmedlap isn't anywhere near us or this will be one helluva bumpy ride! Feedback from the Fans and The Babel Conference. When the Standard Orbit “Refit” Crew began our shakedown voyage aboard the Trek.fm network on January 11, 2016, one of the tenants of our podcasting team for Trek.fm was to ensure that we - Norman C. Lao, Jeffrey Harlan and Ken Tripp - upheld the level of quality and content standards that the listeners of Standard Orbit and Trek.fm have come to expect from the incredible groundwork set by former hosts Drew Stewart and Mike Schindler. Theirs were large shoes to fill and the Refit Team had a daunting task to reach a bar that had been previously set so high with 110 shows. Nearly four months and 14 episodes later, the Refit Team just wanted to check in with all of our supporters and listeners to see if we have settled into a nice and steady cruising speed. The Chief (Ken), Mr. AtoZ (Jeffrey) and I have a great deal of fantastic content planned for the future. But, we also want to keep all of our listeners and Red Shirts engaged in the show that is crafted for you. We have loved every second that we have brought you in these first few months and there is a great road ahead to BEYOND and STLV50! Enterprise/Doctor Who Crossover. What if Star Trek and Doctor Who had a crossover TV event? What would that look like? Who would we see? What channel would carry it? Surprisingly, this was actually an idea that Russell T. Davies, former show runner of the British series Doctor Who, mentioned in a 2009 interview. In this episode of Warp Five, hosts Jeff Harlan and Floyd Dorsey are joined by Daniel Proulx and Phillip Gilfus of Earl Grey to tackle the combination of Enterprise and Doctor Who. Star Trek Beyond the Trailer. The first trailer for Star Trek Beyond was released on December 14, 2015 and was immediately and severely criticized by the Star Trek fan community at large. Focusing too much on action, such as James T. Kirk performing some thrilling heroics on a motorcycle, the overwhelming fan response raised a very interesting question: Did the combination of Justin Lin, Director of The Fast and the Furious, in concert with the explosive styling of this trailer, cause an unjust reaction from the fans based solely on some ninety seconds of footage? On this episode of Standard Orbit, we will take and in-depth look at the speculation surrounding the trailer, delve deeper into why the fans reacted in such a volatile manner and go even further … beyond the trailer itself. Two days after the trailer's release, Simon Pegg told audiences, “There’s a lot more story, and a lot more character stuff, and a lot more of what I would call ‘Star Trek stuff.’ But, you know, they’ve got to bring a big audience in, they’ve got to bang the drum. So to Star Trek fans, I’d say hang in there, be patient." Hosts Norman C. Lao and Jeffrey Harlan Guests Ken Tripp Production C Bryan Jones (Executive Producer), Norman C. Enterprise Season One: The Early Missions. Just how do you create a prequel to a universe as fleshed out as Star Trek? The challenge that faced the writers and producer's of Enterprise was not an easy one. The first season tried to lay the groundwork for Starfleet's very first outing into deep space and to place the Star Trek future must closer to us, to something that we could actually relate to. What worked? What didn't work? Was it the "prequel" that fans were expecting? In this episode of Warp Five, hosts Norman Lao and Will Nguyen are joined by Floyd Dorsey, Mike Morrison, and Jeffrey Harlan for an in-depth look at the very beginning of Enterprise, focusing on the first six episodes of Season One. Recasting ENTERPRISE for the Big Screen! Mike Morrison, co-host of Meta Treks and Associate Producer for Warp Five, threw down the gauntlet to your intrepid Warp Five team. Inspired by To The Journey episode #103 and Meta Treks episode #3, Mike challenged your beloved Team Conference Room with continuing the amazingly fun and, at times, frustrating challenge of recasting Enterprise for a "J.J. Abrams style" major motion picture reboot. And yes, for all of you Boomers out there, trying to recast our beloved NX-01 main crew and a few secondary characters was truly enlightening. The Rules of Engagement that were previously established in To The Journey and Meta Treks required us to cast our choices very specifically. We had to find actors, not impressionists, who embodied both the physical and spiritual attributes of their television counterparts. The best example of this is how Karl Urban so brilliantly re-interpreted Dr. McCoy his 2009 and 2013 performances. So please join us in The Conference Room and maybe you will create a list of your very own that you can share with us via e-mail, voicemail or on The Babel Conference. Enjoy! HostsNorman C. Pegg, Part 1: Trek. Over the past few days, many of us here at Trek.fm have been discussing the news of a new Star Trek TV series, coming in January of 2017. But who is it that's making this show? In the final season premiere of Commentary: Trek Stars, Mike and John discuss the series, specifically looking at executive producer Alex Kurtzman and his career in television and film. We discuss his previous work, what his role on the show may be, and speculate on who may write the series. In this episode, we also begin a new series on Simon Pegg in which we look at his work as a writer. In Part 1, we discuss his portrayal of Scotty in the JJverse films. We also remember TOS visual effects artist, Howard A. MACO Corporal Amanda Cole. In Season Three of Enterprise, the crew dynamic of the NX-01 was “enhanced" in a way that we had never seen before on Star Trek. Due to the dire circumstances that developed at the beginning of the Xindi Arc, we were introduced to an entirely new branch of service from the United Earth Government: the MACOs; a specialized military attachment with orders to safeguard the crew and protect the mission. In terms of the series, this infusion of secondary characters gave the audience an entirely new cast of faces and personalities to enjoy and explore! In this episode of Warp Five, Team Conference Room continues our research into the MACOs, with an in-depth look at Corporal Amanda Cole, played by actress Noa Tishby. Cole was seen in only a few minutes of the Season Three episode Harbinger, as Trip's new romantic interest and was the catalyst for sparking jealousy in T'Pol; a clear sign of her increasing emotional instability as the mission pressed further into the Delphic Expanse. Please join us as we discuss Amanda Cole's (albeit brief) role on Harbinger and her future potential for the series. HostsNorman C. Ambiguity In Action: A Bawdy Count; by Norman C. Stageberg; From Lingua Pranca, June, 1978 — One major source of humor is found in the many and various situations of everyday life, both as they occur in actuality and as they are refined and recounted in literature. A second major source of humor is language itself in its many aspects. One of these aspects is ambiguity. This is our subject for today: ambiguity in language and the pranks it plays. (Read by Mark Brierley.)
Eye of the Needle. When Voyager first started making its way home from the Delta Quadrant, the crew were full of hope that they would find a way home that was as quick as the one that stranded them. In “Eye of the Needle,” such a thing almost happened, and the helping hand came from a familiar foe: the Romulans. In this episode of The Ready Room, we're joined by Charlynn Schmiedt, Will Nguyen, and Zachary Fruhling to discuss this story from when Voyager was still fresh, the Doctor's identity dilemma, the crew's family connections, and the science behind it all. In our news segment we take a first look at Hallmark's 2016 Star Trek ornaments lineup, William Shatner and the Autobiography of Captain James T. Kirk, and discuss Idris Elba's role as lead villain in the first Peggverse film. The Naked Time. The Next Generation went out of its way to avoid connections with The Original Series, but one thing they have in common is crew members getting drunk on water. TNG fans know it as the Psi-2000 virus, but in Kirk's day it was just good ole polywater. Thanks to highly questionable environmental suit design and procedures that would make the CDC cringe, the crew of the Enterprise fell victim to some fancy water molecules that almost killed them. Potential cause of death? Strange behavior. In this episode of The Ready Room we're joined by John Mills, Drew Stewart, and Norm Lao to discuss newly introduced characters acting out of character, crying Vulcans, and why there's always room for time travel. We also explain how to deal with shrinkage and space madness, and we do it all whilst singing a rousing rendition of “I'll Take You Home Again, Kathleen.” In our news segment we discuss Paramount's plans for a resort in London, Kate Mulgrew's upcoming memoir Born with Teeth, and look back at 20 years of Star Trek Generations. Sure, you've seen Trading Places. But do you know about the history of futures contracts, or why some things are traded on commodities markets and others aren't? I didn't, not really. So I spoke to Kara Newman, food writer and author of The Secret Financial Life of Food. One of the things Kara is keen to stress is that where money is involved, there's always a temptation to cut corners, and her book is full of delicious food-based scandals. One of her favourites is The Great Salad Oil Swindle. If you've never heard of it, there's an interesting reason why. The story of The Great Salad Oil Swindle has been told in a book by Norman C. Miller, based on his Pulitzer-winning articles. Some of Miller's original articles are online, and there's a nice account originally published in Accountancy. Bottom line seems to be that while everyone was making money, no-one was inclined to investigate too closely. And an interesting coda to the story, from those articles. The bankruptcy of De Angelis brought American Express almost to its knees. While it's share price was depressed, Howard Buffett bought a sizeable stake, believing the company fundamentally sound. It was a pretty shrewd investment. Notes Kara Newman's book is the Secret Life of Food: From Commodities Markets to Supermarkets. She also has a website. Trading Places turned 30 last year. NPR's Planet Money did a bang up job of asking how accurate it was, with added Roman Mars. Photo of bacon and eggs by Phil Lees Engage
