The transition from our ancestral diets to our modern day diets has left us in an evolutionary mismatch. By returning to a more ancestral-like diet, we can regain alignment with our evolutionary biology and promote better health. Meet Jenny Powers, PhD, the co-author of the book, "On the Origin of Being: Understanding the Science of Evolution to Enhance Your Quality of Life." In this episode of the NTI PodTalk, Dianne and Jenny delve into the concept of evolutionary mismatch in modern diets and its impact on health and wellness, the influence of corporations on our food choices, and how we can reclaim our ancestral diet for better health. About Jenny: Jenny Powers is a mom, a writer, a scientist, and an athlete from Colorado. Her PhD is in Immunology, but she left academia to be a mom and to pursue a writing career. It allowed her scientific training and passion for writing to come together in many ways. Meghan McGee's interest in cooking for wellness was sparked by her desire to create inclusive and nourishing meals for community gatherings. This led her to the Nutrition Therapy Institute and the Natural Food Chef program. Listen in as Meghan talks about the inspiring path that led her to cooking for wellness, the transformative experience of the Natural Food Chef program, and her virtual cooking classes! About Meghan: I was blessed to have found a passion for health at an early age. I studied Health and Wellness Promotion and Nutrition in college and graduated with a Bachelor of Science. After graduating, I was unsure how I was going to use my degree and I loved all the knowledge I could get, so I enrolled at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition and got a health coach certification a year later. I dabbled in health coaching and other wellness jobs, but nothing really filled my cup. In my early 20's I was diagnosed with Lyme disease after many years of searching for answers. During that time, I dove into all the holistic health and nutrition information I could find and built a foundation for myself. Looking back, I am grateful for those experiences because they really fueled my journey to NTI. I graduated from the NFC program in the spring of 2021 and I now teach cooking classes at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs, and I offer private cooking classes in my clients' homes. I have a deep-rooted passion for slow food and I aspire to continue sharing that passion with my community and beyond. Daina has transformed her own life and her clients' lives by researching the best health practices to create effective holistic nutrition programs. What We Discuss In This Episode: Daina shares her experience with poor health, acne, and digestive issues from a young age which led her to explore food's impact and eventually study nutritional therapy to help others address underlying causes. Daina recommends bone broth, fermented foods, and a variety of plant foods like berries, spices, onions and garlic to feed gut bacteria. She emphasized consuming 30 types of plants weekly for microbiome diversity. Daina stresses using high-quality probiotic supplements and warns against cheap brands with unknown strains. She also suggests digestive enzymes to aid nutrient absorption for those experiencing digestive issues. Daina saw many women under consuming protein which increases in importance with age. She advises focusing on protein quality and sources at each meal to support muscle and bone health during midlife. Daina notes hormone changes could trigger new digestive problems in some women. She recommends identifying sensitivities and addressing potential imbalances through testing if dietary tweaks alone don't resolve issues like constipation or diarrhea. Daina's top suggestion is slowing down mealtimes, fully chewing food to allow proper digestion and minimizing stress on the gut. She frames eating as an opportunity to meditatively nourish the body. My guest, Daina Rasutis, is a a Nutrition Therapist Master. Looking for a way to heal her gut, her chronic acne, and increasing fatigue, she turned to a plant based diet. To start, things seemed to be going well. Things improved but she never returned to health. In fact, over time, she felt worse and her symptoms returned. We discussed the importance of protein--specifically animal protein--as we age. It benefits the gut, our muscles, immunity, and more. For those who have concerns about how animals are processed, an egg from a humane farm fed organic food to supplement their grazing, is the answer.Key Points Discussed:Daina's Background: From civil environmental engineering to sustainable food systems and eventually finding her passion in nutrition therapy.Vegan Journey: How going vegan initially improved Dena's chronic conditions like acne but later led to energy depletion and gut issues.Protein Importance: The critical role animal proteins play in maintaining gut health versus relying heavily on supplements or processed foods.Gut Health Focus: Why as we age, especially for women over 50, it becomes essential to prioritize gut health through proper nutrition including adequate protein intake.Muscle Maintenance: The significance of preventing muscle loss by ensuring enough dietary protein paired with resistance training as one ages.Digestive Changes with Ageing: Understanding that our body produces fewer enzymes and stomach acid as we get older which affects digestion.Insights Shared:Transitioning from Veganism:Dena discusses how she gradually introduced eggs then fish back into her diet after realizing plant-based eating was not supporting her well-being effectively.Bone Broth Benefits:Although not complete in amino acids profile compared to other animal products, bone broth is beneficial for skin, bones, and particularly soothing for the gut lining during healing processes.Common Misconceptions:Addressing common misunderstandings about heartburn relief methods such as antacids which can lead to more harm than good by reducing crucial stomach acid production needed for immune defense against pathogens.Food Sensitivity Testing & Stool Analysis:Highlighted importance of identifying individual food sensitivities through testing rather than elimination diets alone; also understanding one's microbiome state via stool tests.Headaches & Gut Connection:Discusses how chronic headaches can often be linked back to gut issues—whether it's due to food sensitivities or poor digestion leading systemic reactions within the body. Conclusion:This episode challenges listeners who are considering or currently practicing veganism while emphasizing the necessity of listening closely to their bodies' needs—especially regarding protein consumption—and adjusting their diets accordingly as they age. Welcome back to the NTI PodTalk Board Exam series! In Part Three, we hear from NTI graduate, Valerie Federwitz. Valerie took the exam last year and provides some great personal insights and advice for those who are also thinking about getting Board Certified in Holistic Nutrition®. Valerie and Dianne discuss navigating the board exam, study tools, advice for those considering taking the exam, and more! Valerie Federwitz was born and raised in Milwaukee, WI and earned an undergraduate degree in Psychology from Concordia University – Wisconsin. From 2003-2020 she and her husband David lived in Northern Ghana where they served as missionaries with Lutheran Bible Translators. During this time they also raised their 4 children, who are now ages 15-20. Having to cook 100% of their food from scratch resulted in several evolutions of her understanding of food and nutrition, which ultimately lead to her utilizing therapeutic dietary strategies to help alleviate the chronic pain and symptoms one of their young children was experiencing. After witnessing with her own eyes the power of nutrition to transform health, she was compelled to pursue a science-based education so she could more effectively help others experience the same health transformations. Valerie graduated from NTI in June 2022 and became Board Certified in Holistic Nutrition® in April 2023. She and her family now live in Concordia, MO where she continues to serve the missionaries and staff of Lutheran Bible Translators in her role as Nutrition & Wellness Consultant. **Timestamps for the topics discussed can be found on this episode's NTI PodTalk page. Welcome back to the NTI PodTalk Board Exam series! In Part Two, we are talking to Selina Rai, a graduate of both of our programs. Selina is in the process of preparing for the NANP Board Exam. Listen in as she and Dianne discuss the application process, study groups, and how being board certified will benefit her and her practice. "Hi, I am Selina, founder of Ahara Kalpa- Holistic Wellness By Selina Rai LLC. I am a Nutrition Therapist Master, Natural Food Chef, Reiki Energy Healer, and Yoga and Mindfulness instructor, with an in-depth knowledge of the biology of yoga, meditation, and Ayurveda. My journey with Holistic Nutrition Therapy started as a search for solutions to my hormonal imbalances, PCOS pain, monthly PMS pain, hyperthyroidism, cystic acne, low energy, and hair loss. I knew early on that prescribed medications for my conditions were making my symptoms even worse. Then I started searching for information about holistic options. I came across Nutrition Therapy. As I started eating more whole foods, organic and pasture-raised foods, I slowly started feeling changes in my health. So I decided to go full-on board and joined the Nutrition Therapy Institute as a student. As I proceeded with the classes I practiced and applied what I learned to myself and my family. Now I am in my best health ever. In 2022, I earned my certification in holistic Nutrition Therapist Master (NTM), and Natural Food Chef (NFC) from the Nutrition Therapy Institute of Arvada, Colorado." Dr. Glen Harrison is the leading functional medicine expert and practitioner at Center of Functional Medicine in Westminster, CO. Listen in as he and Dianne discuss his root cause approach, the relationships he builds with his clients, and more! “Prior to enrolling in chiropractic college, I worked in the geological exploration sector of the mining industry. This gave me the opportunity to work on projects in extremely remote locations around the world including the northern tip of Greenland, the Tian Shan mountain range in central Asia, and the Svalbard Islands in the Norwegian Sea. My inspiration to pursue a career in chiropractic came from an injury that jeopardized both my ability to work in the mining sector and my long-term physical health. After pursuing many forms of treatment without experiencing any relief in my symptoms, my father suggested that I seek chiropractic care. In addition to traditional adjustments, the chiropractor provided me with conditioning, stretching, and nutritional guidance, and my pain began to subside. After experiencing the frustration associated with constantly feeling unwell and the relief I achieved after receiving comprehensive care, I decided to dedicate my life to helping others achieve similar results. Throughout the course of my education, I gained an even greater appreciation for the potential health gains that functional medicine and proper nutrition can provide, especially for patients with impaired biochemistry. This simple principle always stands true: if human biochemistry is even slightly impaired true health and longevity cannot be achieved. These basic laws of human physiology can never be avoided.” Center of Functional Medicine Website Podcast YouTube Channel Facebook **Timestamps for the topics discussed can be found on this episode's NTI PodTalk page. Maddie LeBrun is a registered nurse and a graduate of both our programs - Nutrition Therapist Master and Natural Food Chef. Listen in as she talks about her desire and hope to bridge the gap between conventional and holistic healthcare. "My name is Maddie LeBrun and I've had the pleasure of being a graduate of both NTI's MNT and NFC programs. My own personal health journey and journey to find NTI started when I was in college. Always having been interested in medicine and the human body, I was a young nursing student with a busy schedule. As my health started declining and I started becoming sensitive and allergic to dozens of foods, I knew I had to find a solution. Being familiar with pathophysiology, research and how the human body works, I started reading anything I could get my hands about holistic health and eventually found a provider who filled in the missing details about the origin of my health struggles. I knew I wanted to learn everything I could about holistic health, but needed the science and the research to back up the claims I was learning about. This led me to NTI and eventually NFC. Having worked in hospitals for 7 years in a variety of settings, I have seen the impact of chronic disease on my patients. I've been determined to try and make an impact on my patients lives in small ways, whether it was discussing nutrition or lifestyle changes outside of the hospital, but the truth is I have seen our hospital systems from the inside out and know there is so much room to grow. As I navigate the next steps in my career away from the nursing bedside, I hope to use my background, experience and passion to blend the two worlds of conventional and holistic medicine to positively impact future patients or clients!" How does sleep actually play a role in our day-to-day productivity and success outcomes?· How might someone who is working long hours, and therefore not prioritizing quality sleep or nutrition, be sabotaging their business success? · Other than food choices, cortisol (stress), sleep, and exercise, what else could be preventing a person from reaching their goals?
