The Suburban Women Problem

The Suburban Women Problem

Last week was a tough one in Georgia. After the shooting at a high school in Winder GA, Jasmine says her daughter was afraid to go to school. And she's not the only one - every child, parent, and frankly any person who watches the news gets retraumatized each time this happens. And yet, still politicians do nothing. In fact, last week JD Vance called school shootings “a fact of life."Instead, he and other extremist Republicans have chosen something else to fixate on: the so-called traditional nuclear family. This isn't the first time America has gone through a “marriage panic,” as our guest Julie Kohler of White Picket Fence puts it, but it's particularly infuriating given Republicans' unwillingness to address the lax gun laws that are actually putting our kids at risk.Julie explains exactly how extremists are trying to force their regressive version of gender roles and the “traditional family” on everyone. From banning no-fault divorce to changes to the tax code, they want to take women and LGBTQ people back to a past where we had no rights. And of course this 1950s vision of the American family has plenty of racism baked in too.We may no longer be shocked by Trump or Vance's comments about women (“childless cat ladies” and all), but we can't just roll our eyes at their rhetoric. They have real policies to back it up, and we have to tell everyone we know. After their interview with Julie, Jasmine and Amanda wrap up with a toast to campaign volunteers and First Serve's Day of Service in this week's Toast to Joy.If you're wondering to talk to young people in your life around voting, we invite you to join us at 7:30pm on Thursday 9/12 for a virtual Ask Me Anything event with a panel of inspiring young activists: Olivia Juliana, Sam Schwartz, and Haley Lickstein. I'm in Chicago this week for the Democratic convention, and I hope you'll follow along to get the information, but as we watch, what we hope will be the first female president take the convention stage, I thought we should discuss what the other side is offering when it comes to women, women's rights, and womanhood. With that in mind, our guest today is acclaimed writer Julie Kohler, host of award winning White Picket Fence podcast to talk to us about the rising extremist movement gaining steam to squash women back into “traditional” roles, roll back no fault divorce, as well as efforts, described in project 2025, to restore the “American family” as they define through a very specific lens. Once the foot soldiers of the right-wing movement, social conservatives are increasingly setting the agenda, arguing for a state that takes an active role in shaping and preserving traditional institutions like the nuclear family. However, this vision of family offered by social conservatives is inextricably linked with a disturbingly retrograde view of gender, sexuality, reproductive rights, and American history. This week, Michael and Felicia talk to Julie Kohler—writer and host of the podcast White Picket Fence, which is about the fractured politics of white women. Julie's writing on politics, feminism, and gender and family under neoliberalism has appeared in outlets like CNN, the Washington Post, Fortune, the Daily Beast, and Democracy, A Journal of Ideas. Julie, Michael, and Felicia discuss the role social conservatives played in American politics in the past, and the increasing power this coalition wields in politics today. “At the most extreme, if you really endorse this notion that the state should be playing a role in establishing moral culture, what you can end up with is a comfort with, if not open embrace of, illiberal authoritarianism,” Julie says. Presented by the Roosevelt Institute, The New Republic, and PRX. Generous funding for this podcast was provided by the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation and Omidyar Network. Organizing around motherhood works. It can activate women politically by helping them tap into a powerful identity. But maternal activism can also have some unintended consequences that don't advance justice. So in the final episode of the season, we're asking this season's guests: should the left still be playing into maternalist politics? Or can we evolve beyond it — to a kind of politics that focuses on values, not a fixed identity, and makes space for all caregivers? This season's cover art features a photograph by Jonathan Wilkins.White Picket Fence is supported by Planned Parenthood. Much of the motherhood activism that is lifted up in our politics portrays women in a certain way: as uniquely moral, even apolitical, actors who were compelled to take action because they fear for their children's safety. It's a myth that's highly racially coded and obscures the realities of motherhood. The truth? Motherhood is political. Moms are political. And when we start acknowledging that and centering the most marginalized moms in our activism —  their needs and experiences — we end up building better policies for all of us.This season's cover art features a photograph by Jonathan Wilkins.White Picket Fence is supported by Planned Parenthood. The political identity of "mother" is not owned by the right. There's also a rich history of mothers working to advance progressive change. Yet the framing of much of this activism—a mother spurred to action when awakened to a threat to her child's safety—remains grounded in an image of motherhood that is riddled with race and class privilege. Shannon Watts, the founder of Moms Demand Action, began her activism journey as a stay-at-home suburban mom of five who felt compelled to fight for common-sense gun violence prevention in the wake of the Sandy Hook school shooting. But when Shannon met Rep. Lucy McBath, then a mother grieving the loss of her son, Jordan, to gun violence, something shifted. The more Moms Demand Action expanded their focus and passed the microphone to Black women who had been working on the issue for years, the more powerful Moms Demand Action became. This season's cover art features a photograph by Jonathan Wilkins.White Picket Fence is supported by Planned Parenthood. Over three seasons, the podcast has examined the social disruptions that have pushed a political realignment among women. I'm having Julie on today to discuss how  motherhood itself is being weaponized for political gain. In the name of “protecting children” and “parental rights” this particular group has been manipulated to advance the darkest of political agendas. You can see the efforts of this work on our school boards, with school choice, anti-CRT laws and anti-LGBTQ laws. It's the ugly underbelly of what should be a positive group looking out for what's best for children but who are, in reality, using their seemingly innocent identity to truly undermine people's rights.  Guest social: https://www.juliekkohler.com/ Twitter: @juliekkohler1 Insta: juliekohlerwrites Please RATE and SUBSCRIBE so we can grow the show, open the dialogue, and inspire change moving forward! We're bringing you another podcast from Wonder Media Network that we think you'll love: White Picket Fence. White Picket Fence interrogates the structures of inequity affecting women since America's founding. On the newest season, host Julie Kohler investigates mothers as a political force — how motherhood has been utilized for political gain and why the identity of “mother” remains so politically potent. In the fall of 2020, a group of mothers gathered around a kitchen table. They were concerned that public school administrators were making decisions about their children's health and education that overstepped their bounds. It felt like they were losing control over their kids. So they decided to band together and fight for their parental rights. Pretty compelling, right? It's hard to argue with moms. The GOP knows that. Today, Nathan discusses a couple of tools for better communication in a variety of contexts. One of the great things about communication is that it is a group of skills that can be learned in order to enrich our lives and to increase the feelings of connection between the folks and spaces we value most. While difficult to learn new skills, when we start where we are and gradually shift into utilizing more adaptive strategies, we learn new ways of being in the world, as the Kingdom of God within us transforms who we are and how we live. I pray that this is useful for you in developing ways to foster the relationships you care most about. For scheduling counseling at C3, please follow this link. A lot of schools might be on spring break this week, but with public education at the center of so many right-wing attacks, there's no break for teachers. So in this episode, we're putting America's teachers front and center! This week, Red Wine and Blue hosted a roundtable discussion with four public school teachers to hear about what they've been going through… in their own words. Book bans? Critical Race Theory? Covid? Angry parents at school board meetings? Teacher shortages? We talk about all of it and more. But before we get to our panel of teachers, hosts Rachel Vindman, Jasmine Clark, and Amanda Weinstein dig into what they've been seeing in the news. Rachel gives an update on Ukraine, Amanda talks about rising gas prices, and everyone gets furious over the dangerous abortion bills in Missouri and Texas. (As Jasmine says, “if you've never had a period, you should not be writing bills about pregnancy. Period.”)Finally, our hosts raise a glass to rest and recovery, seeing family (and discovering that all three hosts are big sisters!), and of course to amazing teachers in this week's “Toast to Joy.”If you enjoy The Suburban Women Problem, you might like White Picket Fence - a podcast from Wonder Media. For a transcript of this episode, please email theswppod@redwine.blue.

Heal the Mother, Heal the World. The Mother Wound refers to the generational trauma passed down from mother to daughter due to the expectations placed on women in a patriarchal society. The purpose of this isn't to shame mothers of grown children or induce anxiety upon mothers who are actively parenting little ones. It's an important conversation that needs to happen for self awareness, the first step to healing. "What we don't own we project, what we don't heal we pass on." - Bethany Webster (author of “Discovering the Inner Mother: A Guide to Healing the Mother Wound and Claiming your Power") https://www.instagram.com/themotherwound/ Patriarchy can be triggering word for some people so let's define it. (n) A society where the father or eldest male is head of the family, men hold the power and women are excluded from the power. Women's rights and equality have a come a long way, but the Patriarchy is still so strong and embedded that women self police themselves to fill the unrealistic expectations society has set for us. Women are conditioned to believe that their place is to be small, quiet, submissive, subservient and for mothers specifically - self sacrificing. That conditioning is like a wound, a traumatic mindset that is passed from generation to generation. So even as the world evolves, the wound is there. "Women will continue to feel stuck as long as we believe our safety is contingent on compliance with patriarchal standards and expectations." - Bethany Webster (author of “Discovering the Inner Mother: A Guide to Healing the Mother Wound and Claiming your Power") Women can work to heal the mother wound by living life on their own terms and we can do this by way of important forms of self care like speaking and living your truth, resting, asking for help, setting boundaries, and releasing the attachment to fulfilling society's expectations. Ask mother wound expert Bethany Webster says: "Feel the guilt and do it anyway." I want to thank my friend and fellow Life Coach Krista Kathleen for joining me on this episode and bringing this important concept into the spotlight! Her book "Beyond The White Picket Fence", which is available NOW on Amazon, is a perfect example a women healing this mother wound.
