PART 2 of Does life have meaning Series: How do we find meaning (and happiness) in the contemporary age?In the so-called 'happiest' countries in the world, the uncomfortable reality of high rates of depression, suicidality, chronic pain, and social isolation are obscured by the conflation of happiness with capitalist conformity. In this intriguing talk, Rob Boddice challenges the tenets of happiness indices that flatten the subjective states of citizens, asking pointedly if it is still possible for suffering to be a virtue. Our London festival is coming up on 21-22 September at Hampstead Heath! PART 1 of Summertime Soul Search Series: How do we find meaning (and happiness) in the contemporary age?Humans have a special need for meaning in their life. A life without meaning, many would agree, has no value. But what does meaning actually mean? And how can we ensure our life is full of it?Professor of Psychology and Cognitive Science John Vervaeke has dedicated much of his research precisely to this question. He is well-known for his attempts to define a meaningful life in an age characterised by increasing rates of depression and loneliness. He has also been at the forefront of efforts to treat studies on mindfulness and related topics with seriousness in academia. In this talk, he gives the lay of the land: why are we devoid of meaning in the current moment, and what can we do about it?Our London festival is coming up on 21-22 September at Hampstead Heath! As we approach the first anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, The Art Newspaper has published an investigation that raises serious concerns that works of art taken by Russian troops from a museum in Kherson, Ukraine, in November 2022 may not be repatriated once the fighting ends. Our London correspondent Martin Bailey tells us about his story. Plus, the Sharjah Biennial opens next week, and is the final biennial curated by Okwui Enwezor, who died in 2019, but set the blueprint for the show, entitled Thinking Historically in the Present. We talk to Nadine Khalil about the biennial and Sharjah's place in the Middle Eastern art ecosystem. And this episode's Work of the Week is Invisible Man, Somewhere, Everywhere (1991) by the American photographer Ming Smith, a key piece in a new exhibition of Smith's work at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. This week: why is Tate rejecting an archive of material relating to Francis Bacon, 18 years after acquiring it? Our London correspondent Martin Bailey tells us about his recent scoop that Tate is returning a thousand documents and sketches said to have come from the studio of Francis Bacon to Barry Joule, a close friend of the artist, who donated them to Tate in 2004. We then discuss the material with Martin Harrison, the pre-eminent Bacon scholar and editor of the catalogue raisonné of Francis Bacon's work published in 2016, and to Sophie Pretorius, the archivist at the Estate of Francis Bacon, who went through the Barry Joule archive item by item. Victoria Munro, the director of the Alice Austen House Museum in New York, discusses this still too-little-known photographer, and her documentation of immigration to the United States and the lives of queer women in the 19th and early 20th centuries. And this episode's Work of the Week is Weißes Bild (1994), a painting by the late Luxembourg-born artist Michel Majerus, now on view at Art Basel—Aimee Dawson, acting digital editor, is at the fair and talks to Giovanni Carmine, curator of the Unlimited section, in which the painting appears.Sophie Pretorius's essay Work on the Barry Joule Archive is in the book Francis Bacon: Shadows published by the Estate of Francis Bacon and Thames and Hudson. This episode was created from my heart ♥ for you.Yoda's journey into cooking begins with playing in the dirt at my childhood home in Thorndale, Ontario. I started navigating my way through the restaurant scene, and later became a Red Seal Chef, restaurateur and private caterer. I've always loved food and once I got a taste for professional cooking and entrepreneurship, I always knew this is what I wanted to do with my life!I was raised as your typical 'country' kid... I played in the dirt, always had to help with the chores, and I considered eating cherry tomatoes right off the porch plant an 'after school snack.' I wasn't an incredibly adventurous eater, but was lucky enough to have parents that cared about food. My mom was always a great cook - I have fond memories of making onion buns with her in the winter to go alongside hearty stew (I can still smell those onions!) My dad became a great cook a little later in life, but was always picking carrots out of the ground and encouraging us to take a bite - dirt and all. He has the greatest green-thumb of anyone I know! His garden today is full of meyer lemons, tomatoes of all colours and he even has an avocado tree in his office! If you've ever had food from Yoda's Kitchen, you've had food grown from my dad's garden! My decision to become a chef came to me in my late teens after my parents separated and, after many meals of Kraft Dinner (eek!), my dad and I decided that one of us would have to learn. I took it on as a hobby and quickly realized that I had immense passion for it. I enrolled in Niagara College's Chef Training program that summer and off I went.Fast forward a few years to my apprenticeship under Chef Alfred Estaphan at Sunningdale Golf Course in London. I'd been in the restaurant scene as a line cook at a few different establishments, and I'd begun to find my style as a young chef - I understood the importance of shopping locally, cooking seasonally and making things from scratch. It was during this time that I decided to do a bit of traveling so I took off to Australia for several months. I made enough money to keep traveling by picking macadamia nuts, making candy with a traveling brittle connoisseur and eventually got a job training under a pastry chef on a huge beach resort with a view of the ocean. It was pure bliss. I was missing home though, and after a short trip across Canada to visit the west coast, I came back and settled in London. While working at some of the city's best restaurants (Braise and The Only on King to name a few) and working part time at Fanshawe College as a lab technician in the Culinary Department, I decided to give catering a go. I developed a business plan in 2010 and it was my Five Year Plan to quit my restaurant job and start catering full time. This dream became a reality in a short 8 months. My dreams were coming true!During my time as a professional caterer, I had the chance to cater so many amazing events, meet many wonderful people and helped change people's lives. Along the way I had many, many challenges, but got to cater some pretty crazy events. I have catered in an open field with no running water or electricity. I've catered on a moving train. I've catered a surprise engagement in the middle of Springbank Park and a walnut fell and shattered one of my dessert plates! I've been blessed to be invited into many of your homes, and will always consider my time as a private caterer as one of the greatest times of my life.In 2016 while my catering company was soaring, I decided to do what no one thought I would do... I opened a restaurant! In May 2016, we opened the doors of Glassroots. During the time Glassroots was open, we achieved many wonderful awards and accolades. We won Our London's "Best Restaurant" and "Best Patio" contest, and we were also named "London's Best Kept Dining Secret" by The London Free Press in their 2017 Reader's Choice contest. It was an interesting 16 months to say the least! I had the most wonderful staff, but restaurant life was incredibly different than catering, and very challenging. You can read more about the full story in my best selling book “Salt and Sour.” (Click here to get your copy)After much thought and soul searching, I decided to leave the restaurant world and return to catering. Before doing so, I took a bunch of time off to work on my book, travel and spend time with family, and in Spring 2018, I relaunched Yoda's Kitchen 2.0! I am currently located at 1010 Dundas Street, behind the Booch retail store. You can currently find me at pop ups around the city, monthly cooking classes at Jill's Table, eating lunch at Curley Brew Co, or delivering Little Green Meals around the city. I love partnering with other local businesses, playing with my dog Gnowee, writing poetry and of course, cooking dinner for friends.Website: https://www.letyodacookforyou.com/ This is a public episode. We’re revisiting stops on our recently wrapped 2020 virtual tour in support of our new book, Snacky Tunes: Music is the Main Ingredient, Chefs and Their Music. Our London visit really had us nostalgic for those good ol’ days. Generating that fuzzy warm feeling were a trio of longtime Snacky Tunes pals, Chef Isaac McHale and Daniel Willis, co-owners of the Clove Club, Luca and Two Lights; and musician Al Doyle of Hot Chip and LCD Soundsystem. In addition to reminiscing about past hangs, we talked about the intersection of music and food along with holiday traditions. Snacky Tunes: Music is the Main Ingredient, Chefs and Their Music (Phaidon), is now on shelves at bookstores around the world. It features 77 of the world’s top chefs who share personal stories of how music has been an important, integral force in their lives. The chefs also give personal recipes and curated playlists too. It’s an anthology of memories, meals and mixtapes. Pick up your copy by ordering directly from Phaidon, or by visiting your local independent bookstore. Visit our site, www.snackytunes.com for more info.Snacky Tunes is powered by Simplecast.

Our London-based designer, Oliver Munby, joins us to talk about translating the conceptual idea of a brand into the real world. He helped create the overall branding for our new gym and apparel line. Though we didn’t cover it much in the episode, he did a ton of research on our city and our preferences before helping us settle on the look and feel that matched what we had in our heads. Here are some of our questions: Why is architectural design (his original major) such a different discipline? How does the visual design process work? Did being a powerlifter himself help in the process of working with us?” What makes working with creators different than working with corporate types? Keep listening for the special announcement near the end. (Yes, this week too!). You can find Oli at @Munby_ on Instagram. Subscribe for updates about our new gym (Third Street Barbell) and apparel line at 3sb.co! Local memberships and international fresh fits! Francois Fillon has emerged as the centre-right contender for the 2017 french presidency. Who is Fillon and what are his views? His broadly Thatcherite views will give Marine la Pen plenty of points of discussion in the the lead up to the election, says Lara Marlowe. Israel always has a vested interest in the outcome of the U.S. presidential election. This time around it would seem they got their preferred outcome with Trump having stated during his campaign that he intends to move the American embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. Will the seemingly pro-Israel Trump become a powerful ally or indifferent after victory? Our London editor Denis Staunton reports from Tel Aviv. Since his death Fidel Castro's record has been praised and criticised in equal measure. What is Castro's lasting legacy in Cuba and latin America as whole? Journalist and author of 'The Cubans: Voices for change' Lynn Geldof recalls the 1980s in Cuba, a time when the impoverished country saw economic growth and some the positive effects of the socialist regime.
Ken and Lisa welcome Amir Farahi Executive Director of London Institute and Our London columnist and CJBK's Ryan Spence to the Round Table to talk about Blackberry, Mars and other interesting topics.

This focus panel on race and racism was recorded at Foyles, Charing Cross Rd, 23rd March 2016 at the second in the Our London event series in collaboration with Compass and co-hosted by Novara Media. One of the greatest aspects of living in London is its diversity, but at the same time the city is striated by racial politics. In London, as throughout the UK, people from BAME groups have been historically much more likely to be in poverty than white British people, as well as suffer from housing deprivation, homelessness and inferior access to healthcare and education. Meanwhile, racist violence is on the rise, with state racisms against ‘Muslimness’, an institutionally racist police and the ‘extreme centre’ of the British political elite enforcing tensions between race, class and nation in a context of increasing immigration and numerous global crises. In response to all of this, Novara Media, Verso and Compass will be co-hosting a panel that focuses on living in London and some of the intersecting oppressions that increasingly define it. Novara Media's Aaron Bastani chairs the panel and is joined by Jumanah Younis of Sisters Uncut, Ash Sarkar, also from Novara Media, Liz Fekete, Director of the Institute of Race Relations and author of the forthcoming Fault Lines (Verso, 2017)and activist and academic Adam Elliott-Cooper. We remember those who died in police custody and ask: What does it mean to call London a multicultural – or even a post-racial – city in the context of neoliberalism? What is the relationship between race and class in the city in 2016 and how should mayoral candidates be responding to these issues?

We celebrate all things paternal on this episode with the help of stand-up comedian Kent Valentine, plus a special cameo by Ellie's dad. Kent reveals his strategies for coping with three children under the age of five. There's a chat about meditation, and Helen reveals some strong opinions about Russell Brand. Then it's time for a new section, the pretty self-explanatory Dad Jokes, followed by the return of an old favourite with a new twist - it's Manbag Surprise! And of course we round off with some Scummy Mummy Confessions. Kent probably won't be letting his children listen to this bit. **NEWSFLASH** We're shortly launching a new monthly show at The Hob in Forest Hill! Come and see us live on Wednesday 24 September, then 29 October, 26 November and 17 December. Every show will be different, with brand new songs, sketches and silliness. And each one will feature brilliant stand-up from top comedians who have been on telly and everything. Tickets are just a fiver from We Got Tickets. Our London shows often sell out so get yours now! Check out Kent's website for more from him or follow him on Twitter: @kentvalentine. The mindfulness meditation app we discuss is called headspace. There's more information about transcendental meditation over at tm.org, and it's well worth reading the Seinfeld-Baldwin chat. We're on Twitter too: @scummymummies. We love getting reviews on iTunes and reading your Scummy Mummy Confessions - please send in via Facebook or email scummymummiespodcast@gmail.com. Thanks for listening! We have a rather special episode this week as we invite Jamie Blanco to put together a live set, consisting entirely of his own material. Jamie came to our attention through his retrospective, yet entirely modern sound on labels like Tusk Wax and London Housing Trust. His live set has taken him to perform recent shows at Renate in Berlin, and Bad Passion in London. Using Ableton with a controller, sending his tracks through an analogue space echo, loop station and Moog filter and playing live acid basslines on his 303, Jamie's aim is to retain a live feel throughout his sets. Our London followers should check him out playing alongside Andre Lodemann in Shoreditch on December 12th. Look out for new releases coming early next year on Cynic, Disco Bloodbath and again on London Housing Trust, some of which you can hear in the set. http://soundcloud.com/jamieblanco
Episode #64 - London, England - 4/19/11 Keith Smith the "Crusader Raider" visits Oakland annually to see his favorite American football team the Oakland Raiders play. This April 2011 my wife Lisa and I (Randy) were fortunate enough to be able to visit Keith in his home town of London. Keith and Big Dave Chapman (also a die-hard Raiders fan) showed us a great time for the four days we were there. In the first part of the video, Keith chatted with fellow English Raider fans Raider Nik and Big Dave Chapman. We also had the opportunity to attend an "English Football" game featuring Keith and Dave's favorite English football team, Leyton Orient. We had a great time, even getting to go into the team locker room prior to the game. We were shaking hands with the team and chatting with them as the coach came in to give them their final plans for the game. We show you some video of Keith interviewing a few Raider fans inside the stadium just before the start of the game. Keith chats with Adam, Les, Keith's daughter Kellie and Big Dave's brother Richard. After Leyton Orient won this match by a score of 2 to 1, we had a great time having a few drinks in the Leyton Orient "Supporters Club"...even the team captain had a pint with us! He agreed to become a member of the Raider Nation, so we'll be getting some Raiders gear over to him. Our London adventure will be continued on our next videocast, Episode #65, where we will have more interviews with English Raider fans and continue the postgame celebration. THIS WEEK: Reviews, reviews, reviews!!! Our London correspondents Ben Tanner and Christian Kuras make their fabulous debut and review the UK version of "Universal Experience: Art, Life, and the Tourist's Eye," which began its life on this earth at our very own MCA. Brian Andrews, our West Coast rep, is back to tell us what is wrong with the art scene in San Francisco. Duncan and Richard review "On the Scene: Jessica Rowe, Jason Salavon, Brian Ulrich," and then they check out The Museum of Contemporary Photography's new shows "Jeffrey A. Wolin: Inconvenient Stories" and "Stages of Memory: The War in Vietnam." And if THAT weren't enough, Duncan and Richard argue about whether or not Rodney Graham is full of BS after sitting through his lecture. The last song in this week's show goes out from Richard to Scott Speh.On the Scene: Jessica Rowe, Jason Salavon, Brian Ulrich The Museum of Contemporary Photography Rodney Graham Universal ExperienceSF links are to follow. NEXT WEEK: We lied last week. THIS COMING WEEK, we will chat with our West Coast correspondent Brian Andrews and Britton Bertran from Gallery 40000. We'll do some other stuff too, who knows! Soon our New York City reporter, the lovely and talented Cassie Thornton, will check in with her first report, maybe next week. REAL SOON: Duncan and Richard save the holidays! We have put together a wacky collection of funny and non-funny holiday songs. Hate the holidays? I know I do, so we'll make sure you are filled with the milk of human kindness by these jolly little ditties. Also we would like to throw out an open call to anyone who has funny Hanukah and/or Kwanza songs. Let us know--there is a serious lack of said genre of songs, and we'd love to give equal time.
Our London correspondent and host of the EPL Show, Billi Bhatti, gives an insight into what really goes on at the London games, talks how English fans react to the NFL London games and why he finds the whole thing bizarre. He also breaks down the Jags vs Eagles, talks about a potential London franchise and closes out with a Lock/Dog/Tease.
