A medical doctor often diagnoses physical ailments through a series of lab tests, x-rays, observations, and data analysis. There are multiple proven guidelines and resources in place for the treatment of disease, fractures, organ failure, and other physical illnesses. But, for mental health diagnoses, one book, currently in its fifth revision, is the go-to manual for all mental health professionals. To explore how the manual was created, its major flaws, and the consequential misdiagnoses that come from it, Positive Psychology Podcast Host Lisa Cypers Kamen speaks with author and activist Sarah Fay about her investigation and dissection of the Diagnostic & Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders , or DSM . In her book, Pathological: The True Story of Six Misdiagnoses, Sarah shares the personal mental health journey that led to her writing the book and why she created a public awareness campaign to identify the dangers of the DSM. Sarah Fay — Mental Health Diagnosis: ● Most of the conditions included in the Diagnostic & Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) are scientifically invalid. [2:05] ● Sarah explains one of the main flaws of the DSM and how 46% of American adults will receive an unproven DSM diagnosis. Sarah Fay is the author of the memoir, Pathological: The True Story of Six Misdiagnoses. Pathological explores the consequences of overidentifying with a psychiatric diagnosis and how doing so can lead to self-stigmatization and self-limitation. During this episode of Ever Forward, Sarah discusses mental health diagnoses, from what they are to where they come from, how she lived through six of them, and how we can embrace and understand them better as a society. The stigma that society places on mental illness is well known, but what about the stigma we place on ourselves? Could that actually be more harmful? In Sarah's opinion, yes. Sarah discusses candidly in this episode how being diagnosed with Anorexia as a child caused her to over identify with the diagnosis and attach her thoughts and feelings to it, which led her to believe that she wouldn't be capable of doing many things in life, such as maintain a long-term relationship or hold down a full-time job. Fortunately, Sarah's perspective on her mental health has evolved to where she doesn't feel this way anymore. Her ability to reframe her diagnoses and honor her experiences has been a result of good mental health practitioners, a supportive family, and her willingness to take charge of learning more about her diagnoses and where mental health diagnoses come from. This week's conversation is with Sarah Fay, an award-winning author and mental health advocate working to improve how we think and talk about our mental health.Sarah's experience of being diagnosed with six different mental health disorders over the course of 30 years and finding no relief led her to write her best-selling journalistic memoir Pathological: The True Story of Six Misdiagnoses. As part of her continued devotion to changing the conversation around mental health, Sarah also founded Pathological: The Movement, a public awareness campaign dedicated to empowering people to make informed decisions about their mental health. In this conversation, Sarah opens up about how she came to inhabit her diagnoses, how we can improve the diagnosis process, and her inspiring journey to recovery. With almost one in five citizens (47.1 million people) in the U.S. alone having been diagnosed with a mental health condition, there's no doubt that a majority of us have been touched by this issue – I hope this conversation gives you a new framework for navigating the complexities of mental health, and a deep knowing that no one is in it alone.-----Please support our partners! We're able to keep growing and creating content for YOU because of their support. One psychiatric diagnosis can punctuate a life; six can alter its course completely. Sarah Fay, writer and currently on faculty in the English departments at DePaul University and Northwestern University, joins host Krys Boyd to discuss her many diagnoses and offers an examination of psychiatry's main tool, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders—the DSM— and the history behind it. Her book is called “Pathological: The True Story of Six Misdiagnoses.” This episode originally aired on May 31, 2022.
If you've listened to SelfWork, or read my book Perfectly Hidden Depression, you know that I've cautioned about doctors and clinicians' overdependence on the DSM-V (The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition). In this riveting conversation with the author of Pathological: The True Story of Six Misdiagnoses and activist Sarah Fay, she tells her story of being labeled with six different diagnoses during three decade of treatment, all accompanied by prescribed medications with, at times, very difficult side effects, and numerous therapy techniques. Until finally, one psychiatrist told her - after the typical 30 minute initial visit - "I don't know what you have." His humility and caution changed her life, and she began looking into exactly what this "DSM" was and learning how subjective mental health diagnoses can be. She's also quick to say that she's developed a healthy respect for mental health providers, as the field is a complex one to navigate. And as a provider myself, I know that there are many facets to "diagnosing" that have to be considered. That said, an accurate diagnosis takes more than 30 minutes to determine. So, in this episode sponsored by BetterHelp, I hope you'll learn more about how mental illness diagnoses are made - and how you can have a conversation with your provider or clinician to make sure that you are truly seen and understood, not "labeled." Welcome to the second part of a two-part series on neuro-diversity and mental health. If you happened to miss the first one, you can check out our dialogue with M.E. Thomas on psychopathy (FYD 277). On this episode of Christopher Lochhead: Follow Your Different, we talk about how to improve your mental health. And who better to have that conversation but with Sarah Fay, PhD. Sarah Fay is a bestselling author, and her new book is called Pathological: The True Story of Six Misdiagnoses. Apple books said Sarah's new book is “a powerful memoir by a deeply compelling person and a fantastic writer.” Whether you are curious about neuro-diversity, or looking for ways to improve your mental health, you can't go wrong with listening to this episode. The world that Sarah Fay lives in The conversation starts off on the topic of how Sarah is processing the world we live in today. As someone who was in the vacuum of the academe for a while, one might not even notice the world outside. Sarah admits that she pretty much missed the Obama administration while she was working on her PhD. There is a certain appeal of the academe of being away from the world and being surrounded by actual books, and being in pursuit of knowledge. That is, until the world comes calling. How things have changed Sarah shares that she has been writing about how different things have changed for her and how she saw herself. One of the things she has noticed is the change in her mental health, and how it has changed for the better. “I was writing about how different things have changed for me and how I see myself. Now as someone who had a mental illness, I believe I've been cured. There's no evidence to suggest that we cannot fully heal from mental illness, even serious mental illness like what I had.” – Sarah Fay Sarah finds the notion that mental illness only lies dormant at times very pessimistic, as it sets the precedent that it could never be fully healed. The Metaphor of Mental Illness Sarah shares the metaphor of mental illness that she absolutely loves, which is much like breaking a bone. “When you break a bone after it heals (which I didn't know, this is in physical medicine), the point of the break becomes the strongest part. And so if we think of mental illness, or some sort of psychosis as a break, then we heal stronger.” – Sarah Fay And if you look how resilient and strong people are who have recovered from mental illness, it makes a whole lot of sense for Sarah. In this podcast episode I chat with the inspiring advocate and author, Sarah Fay to discuss her amazing book, Pathological: The True Story of Six Misdiagnoses- a must-read about mental health. It is not only a manifesto on the issues with our national healthcare system, but also exposes the faults of supposed “strategic” documents like the DSM and other traditional avenues for mental health diagnoses. In addition to discussing the patient experience, in this conversation, Sarah also discusses what is necessary to evolve the discussion on mental health and health as a whole. You will also get guidance on how you can best discuss mental health with your medical provider and what you can do to be your own medical advocate. She also will give you tips on being your own medical provider with some daily check-in's you can do yourself. This is a really important conversation I hope you'll tune into. Sarah Fay (Ph.D., MFA) is an award-winning author and mental health advocate working to improve how we think and talk about our mental health. Her experience of being diagnosed with six different mental health disorders and finding no relief led her to write her journalistic memoir Pathological: The True Story of Six Misdiagnoses, an Apple Best Books pick that was hailed in The New York Times as a “fiery manifesto of a memoir.” Sarah has shared her story on NPR's 1A, Oprah Daily, Salon, NPR's KERA/Think, The Rumpus, in The Los Angeles Times, and more. Pathological has been featured in Forbes, mindbodygreen, Thrive Global, Lit Hub, Psychology Today, and others.
After reading Pathological: The True Story of Six Misdiagnoses, I was delighted to have the opportunity to sit down and discuss the book with author Sarah Fay. In this exploration of the ways we pathologize our human experiences, Sarah opens the door to a new conversation about mental health. In this episode, Sarah shares: How and why do we categorize ourselves to make everyday life easier How any diagnosis can turn into a self-fulfilling prophecy Her recommendations for when you are handed a diagnoses Why recognizing signals in your body can help you learn how to process feelings and emotions Sarah Fay (Ph.D., Iowa MFA) is an award-winning author and mental health advocate working to improve how we think and talk about mental health by moving the conversation away from simplistic diagnoses and toward a deeper understanding of our mental and emotional lives. Her personal experience of being diagnosed with six different mental health disorders and finding no relief led her to investigate the diagnoses we receive and to write her journalistic memoir, Pathological: The True Story of Six Misdiagnoses which Apple Books chose as one of the Best Books in March. Sarah has shared her story on NPR, Salon, and more. I hope you find this conversation as fascinating as I did. Be sure to share the episode with your friends and family.

We will learn: Why your mental health diagnosis is not your identity. Surprising questions to ask your doctor when you receive a diagnosis. Why our conversation about mental health has stagnated and how to progress it. Did you know that there's absolutely no way to measure or prove that you have any of the common (or uncommon) mental health diagnoses? This has a ton of negative implications including overprescribing and misdiagnosing. The other big issue with the inaccuracy of these diagnoses is that your mind is powerful. And most people begin to identify with their diagnosis. So today we're talking about how mental health issues are diagnosed and how you can use this knowledge to make informed decisions when it comes to your mental health. Our guest is Sarah Fay. She's on the faculty at Northwestern University and the founder of Pathological: The Movement. She is also the author of "Pathological: The True Story of Six Misdiagnoses". What I discuss with Sarah Fay: Almost one in five people (47.1 million) in the US have been diagnosed with a mental health condition. That number increased by about 1.5 million from last year. More may follow with a mounting sense of isolation in our fragmented country. But is a mental diagnosis the path to healing or a self-fulfilling prophecy? Sarah suffered from six mental illness diagnoses for almost thirty years, all labeled because of the DSM. She realized the DSM is seriously flawed, even useless, but it's all we have through that process. #994: I'm back with Sarah Fay to walk through her personal values, motives, and habits in the key areas of life fulfillment so we can hear what has driven and does drive her to recover from mental illness diagnoses, create a movement to question the pat treatment that's become the norm in our culture, and design a life that fulfills her. Sarah Ray is a writer and activist on mental health and her new book is, Pathological: The True Story of Six Misdiagnoses. Sarah journeyed through six major mental health diagnoses over 30 years and her book is a profound journey through the ordeals of the current psychological treatment structure we have normalized. Sarah Fay writes for many publications, including The New York Times, The Atlantic, Time, and The Paris Review and is an incredibly accomplished writer, teacher and is currently on the faculty at Northwestern University. #993: We're taking on mental health and specifically the unprecedented increase in mental illness diagnoses. Here is my take; we are all theoretically on the spectrum of…everything. It's human nature for instance to feel sadness. To have the feeling here and there of depression or anxiety. Brene Brown's bestselling book right now is Atlas of the Heart and she outlines 87 different emotions that are normal and healthy. But when do we go over the line from normal to abnormal? From feeling depressed to being clinically depressed? “Having depression or an anxiety disorder?” Do we need or want an official diagnosis so we can get needed help? Or do we want to deny and boycott any such limiting label? Are we all accepting clinical diagnosis and it's causing us to limit ourselves? This is a big issue and a big question that is affecting all of us. I've brought on an expert to discuss it. Sarah Ray is a writer and activist on the issue and has recently come out with her book, Pathological: The True Story of Six Misdiagnoses. Sarah from a young age displayed some unhealthy behaviors and was diagnosed, labeled, and treated. Over the next 30 years she went on to have clinical diagnoses and labels for Anorexia, Major depressive disorder, Anxiety disorder, Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, Obsessive compulsive disorder, Bipolar disorder, and has also dealt with alcoholism, being a compulsive exerciser, and many bouts being suicidal. You name the drug, she's been prescribed it and taken it. Today…she is well, though still accepting of a couple diagnoses and medications, but has much to educate and warn us about regarding our current culture which has nearly half of all Americans being given an official, clinical diagnosis during their lifetime. The book is a memoir style writing of her personal experiences and her research into the medical system and how it handles and mishandles us and what the consequences are. The “Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders” (DSM) is referred to as the Bible of Psychiatry. Like any scripture, it has nonbelievers. Award-winning author Sarah Fay is one of them. Fay combines investigative journalism and personal experience in her new book, “Pathological: The True Story of Six Misdiagnosis.” Fay speaks candidly with Dr. Alan Campbell about the unintended impact mental illness labels had on her and what she learned through research into the field of psychiatry. sarahfay.org

For an elementary school student with severe ADHD, who's at risk of getting expelled for behavior problems, a proper mental health diagnosis can mean the difference between success or failure with traditional education. In situations like these, we can all understand and appreciate the importance of a medical diagnosis. But what about the rest of us? What if you're depressed after two years of COVID lockdowns, socially isolated, and feeling lost with your career and life? What if you're getting anxiety at the grocery store or struggling to make friends in a new city? You might currently have five of nine symptoms required for a mental health diagnosis as per the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), but will that diagnosis actually help or hurt you? Sarah Fay, my guest on this week's podcast, has been formally diagnosed with six different conditions ranging from anorexia to generalized anxiety disorder; and based on her research, believes that most labeling practices do more harm than good.
