Mad in America: Science, Psychiatry and Social Justice

This week on the Mad in America podcast, we are joined by Sarah Fay. Sarah is an author, an adjunct professor at Northwestern University, a freelance writer at The New York Times and elsewhere, a certified mental health peer recovery support specialist, and a mental health keynote speaker who's spoken to audiences across the country about recovery from mental illness. We have previously spoken with Sarah about her book, Pathological: A True Story of Six Misdiagnoses, which told the story of her twenty-five years spent in the mental health system. For her follow-up work, Cured: A Memoir, Sarah writes about her recovery from mental illness. She says, “During the twenty-five years I spent in the mental health system, not one clinician mentioned the word recovery. I ended up one of those “hopeless” cases—diagnosed with bipolar disorder, chronically suicidal, and unable to live independently. Yet I recovered. Not remission. Full recovery.” In this interview, we discuss why "cured" is such a seldom-used word in psychiatry. We talk about the power of finding hope, the peer recovery movement, and much more. *** Mad in America podcasts and reports are made possible, in part, by a grant from the Thomas Jobe Fund. Today's episode is guest-hosted by Sarah Fay, creative writing professor at Northwestern University, former interviewer at The Paris Review, devoted serializer, and lover of all things Substack. Her Substack Writers at Work helps creative writers use Substack to bolster their careers, including how to serialize their writing. She's currently serializing her new memoir Cured on Substack through 2023.—Sophia Efthimiatou, Head of Writer Relations**You may recognize the names of today's guests: Mary Trump, E. Jean Carroll, and Jennifer Taub. Their new venture is a groundbreaking Substack: Backstory Serial. The content may surprise you—though it shouldn't, and I'll explain why during the podcast. Backstory Serial features their romance novel The Italian Lesson, which is bringing serial novels and Substack fiction into the mainstream. The Italian Lesson is a serialization, meaning it appears in your inbox, chapter by chapter, installment by installment. The plot of The Italian Lesson is simple: An American woman moves to a small town in Tuscany and opens a café. Then, as Mary put it in an interview, “some stud walks in and turns out he's a prince.”Serialization has a long tradition on Substack—I guide writers on how to do it on my Substack, Writers at Work—but no one has had the success that these three have and there are very good reasons why, which we'll go into. The three women play different roles in the writing of the novel: Mary is the author, E. Jean fields comments from their vibrant community and plays the role of romance-novel fact-checker, and Jen acts as editor. In case you don't know Mary, E. Jean, and Jen, a bit of background: Mary Trump describes herself as a mom, writer, liberal progressive, and pro-democracy American. She's the author of Too Much is Never Enough about her uncle (yes, that Donald Trump) and The Reckoning. Her Substack The Good in Us features her commentary on culture, politics, and music (from Tina Turner to Aimee Mann)—plus pet pictures and a community of subscribers who share her vision to use kindness and empathy to ensure that America remains a democracy. E. Jean Carroll's esteemed Substack, Ask E. Jean, is the longest-running advice column in American publishing. It ran in Elle Magazine until E. Jean accused Donald Trump of assault and sued him for defamation, after which Elle fired her. She's since made Substack her home. Her wit, smarts, sass, and empathy are unrivaled. She's also the author of the book What Do We Need Men For?—part satirical treatise in the tradition of Jonathan Swift and part rollicking narrative.Jennifer Traub is a one-woman force against corruption in the United States. In her book, Big Dirty Money, she takes on white-collar criminals. She's also the author of Other People's Houses. Jen is a law professor, an activist, and the host of the Booked Up podcast. In her firey—and also fun—Substack Money & Gossip, she clarifies what the rest of us miss or don't make sense of in the financial and legal world. In our conversation, we talk about everything from why the media has underestimated them as novelists, how they came up with The Italian Lesson's unique form, why they chose to serialize on Substack, knitting patterns, cocktail recipes, the email novel, and what love really is.—Sarah Fay https://www.backstoryserial.com/ Show notes* Subscribe to Backstory Serial on Substack* Find Mary Trump, Jen Taub, and E. There's never been a better time to be a writer. We have so many different ways of finding readers and getting our work in front of them. You can self-publish a book, which is fantastic because you don't have to rely on gatekeepers. But let's face it. Self-publishing takes a little bit of time, and you have to invest in a book cover. You've also got to spend money on advertising now, and so on.But what if there's a different way? Enter serialization. Famous authors, from Charles Dickens to Agatha Christie, have all serialized their works. The good news is, it's easier than ever to do it today. Perhaps, the best place to serialize your book is on Substack. I've interviewed several top Substack publication owners over the past few years. But this week's interview is a good one. It's with Sarah Fay, a creative writing professor at Northwestern in the United States. She's also an author at HarperCollins. In this episode, we discuss: Sarah's two different Substack publicationsHer exact process for serializationKey things to do before you serialize your book or workWhatever stage your current writing project is at, serialization is a great way to practice your work in public and connect with your readers.Resources:Writers at Work with Sarah FaySupport the showIf you enjoyed the show please leave a review on Apple. It all started at 12 years old. From Anorexia, as each mental health diagnosis got snubbed out and replaced with another, right through to Bipolar 1, Sarah Fay was strapped in to ride a 2.5 decade mental health rollercoaster as she grappled with understanding the labels, wrestled with suicidality and navigated life from a very narrow lens that never once offered any hope of ‘recovery'.  Sarah is now an award-winning author, creative writing teacher and keynote speaker who is living proof that healing from mental illness is available to everyone. We explore the pros and cons of mental health terms and labels and share ideas on how our relationship with our stories and circumstances can greatly affect our mental health. In this podcast episode, mental health advocate and the award-winning author Sarah Fay returns to discuss the release of the paperback edition of her book, Pathological, as well as her next project, The Recovery Movement, a deeper exploration of mental health and sharing other people's stories of their road to recovery. This book challenges the negative connotations surrounding mental health and the notion that mental illnesses are something that people can only learn to deal with. Sarah wants the world to know that recovery IS an option and there are tools and resources to help you get there.    One of the tools that Sarah advocates for is peer support. While most people don't know what peer support is, Sarah, the now Certified Mental Health Peer Recovery Specialist, is here to shed some light on how you can take advantage of this resource.  Peer support is now being touted as the future of mental health, and there has also been discussion about creating legislation around it in the United States.  Tune is as we discuss:   The dramatic increase in the number of people receiving mental health services and the unprecedented number of youth receiving psychiatric diagnoses The continued lack of awareness around mental health diagnoses and self-stigma (how to use a diagnosis for, not against yourself) Sarah's continued recovery from 25 years of living with mental illness, e.g., what has surprised (and delighted) her about recovery from psychiatric diagnoses is that an integral part to getting well entails moving past and not identifying with a diagnosis *Peer support and how it can fill in the gaps where there's a lack of access to mental health care And more...  Resources from this episode:    Youth Era: https://www.youthera.org/  The JED Foundation: https://jedfoundation.org/ Seize the awkward campaign : https://seizetheawkward.org/  Ethan Cross book: Chatter : https://www.ethankross.com/chatter/ Connect with Sarah Fay:   IG: @sarahfayauthor  Substack is where she is most active: https://sarahfay.substack.com/ To support The Drama-Free Healthy Living podcast, share with family, friends, and colleagues.     If you like what you hear, leave a 5-star review on apple podcasts HERE.    Connect with me on IG  @jesscording

Sarah Fay is the author of the memoir, Pathological: The True Story of Six Misdiagnoses. Pathological explores the consequences of overidentifying with a psychiatric diagnosis and how doing so can lead to self-stigmatization and self-limitation. During this episode of Ever Forward, Sarah discusses mental health diagnoses, from what they are to where they come from, how she lived through six of them, and how we can embrace and understand them better as a society. The stigma that society places on mental illness is well known, but what about the stigma we place on ourselves? Could that actually be more harmful? In Sarah's opinion, yes.  Sarah discusses candidly in this episode how being diagnosed with Anorexia as a child caused her to over identify with the diagnosis and attach her thoughts and feelings to it, which led her to believe that she wouldn't be capable of doing many things in life, such as maintain a long-term relationship or hold down a full-time job. Fortunately, Sarah's perspective on her mental health has evolved to where she doesn't feel this way anymore. Her ability to reframe her diagnoses and honor her experiences has been a result of good mental health practitioners, a supportive family, and her willingness to take charge of learning more about her diagnoses and where mental health diagnoses come from.  Follow Sarah on Instagram @sarahfayauthor Follow Sarah on Twitter @sarahfayauthor Follow Chase on Instagram @chase_chewning Follow him on Twitter @chasechewning Key Highlights: Sarah discusses the experience of receiving her first psychiatric diagnosis at the age of 12 and what led to it. Let's Face It, No One Wants To Talk About Mental Health - The topic has many stigmasMany people are afraid to share with coworkers because they worry about being judged, or worse, that they could lose their job. Even friends and family are often left in the dark, unaware of how symptoms of conditions such as depression and PTSD affect our daily lives.News, television programs, and films often show people with mental illness as dangerous. Research shows news outlets are more likely to cover dramatic crimes committed by people with mental illness instead of similar crimes done by those who are not formally diagnosed. In 2019, 1 in every 8 people, or 970 million people around the world were living with a mental disorder, with anxiety and depressive disorders the most common. In 2020, that number rose by almost 30% in just one year. While effective prevention and treatment options exist, most people with mental disorders do not have access to effective care. Many people also experience stigma, discrimination, and violations of human rights. What You Can Do To Help Reduce Mental Health StigmaResearchers have identified three ways to combat stigma:Educate yourself and others about mental illnessProtest against unfair depictions of mental illnessInteract with people who experience mental illnessSo for that reason, I have the pleasure of bringing to this podcast a very accomplished woman that is devoted to changing the conversation around mental health. If you've listened to SelfWork, or read my book Perfectly Hidden Depression, you know that I've cautioned about doctors and clinicians' overdependence on the DSM-V (The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition). In this riveting conversation with the author of Pathological: The True Story of Six Misdiagnoses and activist Sarah Fay, she tells her story of being labeled with six different diagnoses during three decade  of treatment, all accompanied by prescribed medications with, at times, very difficult side effects, and numerous therapy techniques. Until finally, one psychiatrist told her - after the typical 30 minute initial visit - "I don't know what you have." His humility and caution changed her life, and she began looking into exactly what this "DSM" was and learning how subjective mental health diagnoses can be. She's also quick to say that she's developed a healthy respect for mental health providers, as the field is a complex one to navigate. And as a provider myself, I know that there are many facets to "diagnosing" that have to be considered. That said, an accurate diagnosis takes more than 30 minutes to determine. So, in this episode sponsored by BetterHelp, I hope you'll learn more about how mental illness diagnoses are made - and how you can have a conversation with your provider or clinician to make sure that you are truly seen and understood, not "labeled." On this episode of Christopher Lochhead: Follow Your Different, we talk about how to improve your mental health. And who better to have that conversation but with Sarah Fay, PhD. Sarah Fay is a bestselling author, and her new book is called Pathological: The True Story of Six Misdiagnoses. Apple books said Sarah's new book is “a powerful memoir by a deeply compelling person and a fantastic writer.” Whether you are curious about neuro-diversity, or looking for ways to improve your mental health, you can't go wrong with listening to this episode. The world that Sarah Fay lives in The conversation starts off on the topic of how Sarah is processing the world we live in today. As someone who was in the vacuum of the academe for a while, one might not even notice the world outside. Sarah admits that she pretty much missed the Obama administration while she was working on her PhD. There is a certain appeal of the academe of being away from the world and being surrounded by actual books, and being in pursuit of knowledge. That is, until the world comes calling. How things have changed Sarah shares that she has been writing about how different things have changed for her and how she saw herself. One of the things she has noticed is the change in her mental health, and how it has changed for the better. “I was writing about how different things have changed for me and how I see myself. Now as someone who had a mental illness, I believe I've been cured. There's no evidence to suggest that we cannot fully heal from mental illness, even serious mental illness like what I had.” – Sarah Fay Sarah finds the notion that mental illness only lies dormant at times very pessimistic, as it sets the precedent that it could never be fully healed. The Metaphor of Mental Illness Sarah shares the metaphor of mental illness that she absolutely loves, which is much like breaking a bone. “When you break a bone after it heals (which I didn't know, this is in physical medicine), the point of the break becomes the strongest part. And so if we think of mental illness, or some sort of psychosis as a break, then we heal stronger.” – Sarah Fay And if you look how resilient and strong people are who have recovered from mental illness, it makes a whole lot of sense for Sarah. Her experience of being diagnosed with six different mental health disorders and finding no relief led her to write her journalistic memoir Pathological: The True Story of Six Misdiagnoses, an Apple Best Books pick that was hailed in The New York Times as a “fiery manifesto of a memoir.” Sarah has shared her story on NPR's 1A, Oprah Daily, Salon, NPR's KERA/Think, The Rumpus, in The Los Angeles Times, and more. Pathological has been featured in Forbes, mindbodygreen, Thrive Global, Lit Hub, Psychology Today, and others. Links Connect with Sarah Fay! In this episode, Sarah shares:  How and why do we categorize ourselves to make everyday life easier How any diagnosis can turn into a self-fulfilling prophecy Her recommendations for when you are handed a diagnoses Why recognizing signals in your body can help you learn how to process feelings and emotions   Sarah Fay (Ph.D., Iowa MFA) is an award-winning author and mental health advocate working to improve how we think and talk about mental health by moving the conversation away from simplistic diagnoses and toward a deeper understanding of our mental and emotional lives. Her personal experience of being diagnosed with six different mental health disorders and finding no relief led her to investigate the diagnoses we receive and to write her journalistic memoir, Pathological: The True Story of Six Misdiagnoses which Apple Books chose as one of the Best Books in March. We will learn: Why your mental health diagnosis is not your identity.  Surprising questions to ask your doctor when you receive a diagnosis.  Why our conversation about mental health has stagnated and how to progress it.  Did you know that there's absolutely no way to measure or prove that you have any of the common (or uncommon) mental health diagnoses? This has a ton of negative implications including overprescribing and misdiagnosing. The other big issue with the inaccuracy of these diagnoses is that your mind is powerful. And most people begin to identify with their diagnosis. So today we're talking about how mental health issues are diagnosed and how you can use this knowledge to make informed decisions when it comes to your mental health.  Our guest is Sarah Fay. She's on the faculty at Northwestern University and the founder of Pathological: The Movement. She is also the author of "Pathological: The True Story of Six Misdiagnoses". What I discuss with Sarah Fay: Almost one in five people (47.1 million) in the US have been diagnosed with a mental health condition. That number increased by about 1.5 million from last year. More may follow with a mounting sense of isolation in our fragmented country. But is a mental diagnosis the path to healing or a self-fulfilling prophecy? Sarah suffered from six mental illness diagnoses for almost thirty years, all labeled because of the DSM. She realized the DSM is seriously flawed, even useless, but it's all we have through that process. Today I have a very special treat As we have two guests on the show. First, we have Sarah Fay who is an award winning author and mental health advocate working to improve how we think and talk about our mental health by moving the conversation away from simplistic diagnoses and toward a deeper understanding of our mental and emotional lives. Her personal experience of being diagnosed with six different mental health disorders and finding no relief led her to investigate the diagnoses that we receive and to write her journalistic memoir, Pathological: The True Story of Six Misdiagnoses, which apple book shows as one of the best books in March. Joining her to unpack a lot of this and more is Dr. Thomas Insel who's a psychiatrist and neuroscientist who has been a national leader in mental health research, policy, and technology. From 2002 to 2015, Dr. Insel served as director of the National Institute of Mental Health.    We talk about why diagnoses and symptoms shouldn't be the focus in treating our mental health, how we should work on ourselves first and allow healing, why we should not allow what we are growing through to define our identity, and so much more!  Thanks to this episode's sponsor: Join Thrive Market today to get 40% off your first order and a free gift worth over $50. #996: I'm with co host Dr. Randy James to further discuss my previous conversations with Sarah Fay on mental pathologies. We are all on the spectrum of mental health or un health, but when does one dip over into a real disorder, and in either case, what can you do about it? In our growing mental health crisis how much is a result of clinically broken minds and how much is caused by lifestyle? Medical doctors like Randy are the front lines of most mental health issues, so how do they and the system generally diagnose and treat? How much control and responsibility do you have in your mental health. Don't expect any easy answers as we strive to balance compassion and control. But the point is helping equip you to be more informed about the options and opportunities for yourself and those you love in regards to mental health.Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

#993: We're taking on mental health and specifically the unprecedented increase in mental illness diagnoses. Here is my take; we are all theoretically on the spectrum of…everything. It's human nature for instance to feel sadness. To have the feeling here and there of depression or anxiety. Brene Brown's bestselling book right now is Atlas of the Heart and she outlines 87 different emotions that are normal and healthy. But when do we go over the line from normal to abnormal? From feeling depressed to being clinically depressed? “Having depression or an anxiety disorder?” Do we need or want an official diagnosis so we can get needed help? Or do we want to deny and boycott any such limiting label? Are we all accepting clinical diagnosis and it's causing us to limit ourselves? This is a big issue and a big question that is affecting all of us. I've brought on an expert to discuss it. Sarah Ray is a writer and activist on the issue and has recently come out with her book, Pathological: The True Story of Six Misdiagnoses. Sarah from a young age displayed some unhealthy behaviors and was diagnosed, labeled, and treated. Over the next 30 years she went on to have clinical diagnoses and labels for Anorexia, Major depressive disorder, Anxiety disorder, Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, Obsessive compulsive disorder, Bipolar disorder, and has also dealt with alcoholism, being a compulsive exerciser, and many bouts being suicidal. You name the drug, she's been prescribed it and taken it. Today…she is well, though still accepting of a couple diagnoses and medications, but has much to educate and warn us about regarding our current culture which has nearly half of all Americans being given an official, clinical diagnosis during their lifetime. One of the many things that I am grateful for when it comes to this podcast is the platform it has become for discussing mental health. Sarah Fay (PhD, MFA) is an activist and author of PATHOLOGICAL: The True Story of Six Misdiagnoses. Her book calls for a new conversation about mental health diagnosis based on rigorous transparency. With exquisite detail and a precise presentation of facts, she digs up her own life at the root to finally ask, Is a diagnosis a lifeline or a self-fulfilling prophecy? We talk about pill shaming, over-identifying with a diagnosis, the possibility of recovering from a mental illness, and more. She writes for many publications, including The New York Times, The Atlantic, Time, and The Paris Review. Currently, Sarah is on the faculty at Northwestern University and the founder of Pathological: The Movement.       This episode is brought to you by WHOOP and Travelzoo.   Travelzoo inspires members to get out and travel to destinations that might not be top of mind. For an elementary school student with severe ADHD, who's at risk of getting expelled for behavior problems, a proper mental health diagnosis can mean the difference between success or failure with traditional education. In situations like these, we can all understand and appreciate the importance of a medical diagnosis.  But what about the rest of us? What if you're depressed after two years of COVID lockdowns, socially isolated, and feeling lost with your career and life? What if you're getting anxiety at the grocery store or struggling to make friends in a new city? You might currently have five of nine symptoms required for a mental health diagnosis as per the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), but will that diagnosis actually help or hurt you?  Sarah Fay, my guest on this week's podcast, has been formally diagnosed with six different conditions ranging from anorexia to generalized anxiety disorder; and based on her research, believes that most labeling practices do more harm than good.  Listen and learn: Why many children are receiving mental health diagnoses from general practitioners, not psychiatrists How a mental health label can turn into an identity Differentiating between situational vs. chronic mental health problems Links Sarah's Site ABOUT OUR GUEST Sarah Fay is an author and activist.
