‘What's wrong with me Google?' Welcome to the latest episode of Join The Docs where we dive headfirst into the digital rabbit hole of health and hilarity. In this knee-slapping instalment, we're joined by Professor Jonathan Sackier, as a surgeon, and by his own admission, “always certain, sometimes right” and Doctor Nigel Guest, whose laugh is as infectious as the common cold but, thankfully, much more delightful. They reminisce about the days when "online" meant you were literally standing in a line, waiting to see the doctor. Is Google your friend? Our duo tackles the phenomenon of Dr. Google and how a simple online search can turn a mild headache into a self-diagnosed case of "I've only got two weeks to live!" They share tales of patients who, armed with a sprinkle of internet articles, fancied themselves as modern-day medical mavericks, only to realise that "DIY toenail surgery" isn't a recommended pastime. But it's not all fun and games; they also get serious, debunking vaccination myths and stress the importance of not falling for the old "I read it on the internet, so it must be true" routine. Jonathan explores the educational role of online videos, and the dangers of the wrong audience watching and acting upon the material. They also dissect the portrayal of medical conditions in the media, which  present a distorted view that's far from the truth.Professor Sackier and Doctor Guest urge their listeners to always seek the advice of real-life, flesh-and-blood professionals when it comes to medical matters. Because, as they wisely point out, the only thing you should be diagnosing yourself with online is a case of the giggles from listening to their podcast. So, strap on your stethoscopes and prepare for a dose of education and entertainment that's sure to raise your heart rate—in the best way possible!—--DISCLAIMER: The views and opinions expressed on Join the Docs are those of Dr. Nigel Guest, Jonathan Sackier and other people on our show. On this episode of Autism in Black Podcast, host Maria Davis-Pierre, LMHC, founder, and CEO of Autism in Black Ink, speaks with Dr. Brandi Tanner, a licensed psychologist and certified school psychologist with over 20 years of experience working with children and adolescents with learning disabilities and behavioral concerns. Dr. Tanner shares her expertise in comprehensive evaluations within the school system and the importance of ensuring that children are not miscategorized. The discussion delves into the differences between medical diagnoses and school categorization, misdiagnoses within and outside of the school system, and unconscious biases that can impact black students during the evaluation and assessment process. Listeners will gain insight into how to get early diagnoses to receive necessary services, possible accommodations for students with autism, and the fear of labeling children versus being able to receive the necessary services. Welcome back to our 3rd and initially unplanned episode with Dr. Richard Burt, author of the recently released book, Everyday Miracles and the OG provider of HSCT here in the US. Let me explain why we thought it would be useful for our listeners, as well as Dr. Burt to come back and re-hash some of Dr. Burt's touch points from the first two episodes. In particular his stance on NOT treating PPMS and non-active SPMS with HSCT. You see, after the first two episodes, I witnessed rumblings of concern and discontent within the online HSCT community. I belong to multiple HSCT groups and most had at least one or two conversations going on addressing Dr. Burt's most recent interviews, including ours on this podcast. So, who was most concerned? Well, primarily PPMS patients, and non-active SPMS patients who are either considering HSCT, are already booked to have HSCT or those who've recently had HSCT. I 100% understand how Dr. Burt's stance on the efficacy of HSCT on their types of MS would have been reason for pause. Knowing that, I felt a responsibility to revisit the topic with him and drill down on the details. It would also give us a chance to ask him a couple of questions we missed on the first interview, like dietary restrictions before and after HSCT as well as questions on second transplants. We feel so fortunate that Dr. Burt graciously agreed to come on again an address a lot of these pressing issues. Also, if you hold on until the end, Jodi and I have a short chat about what we took away from today's interview and recap our thoughts on our entire experience with Dr. Burt. Because she and I have had HSCT, and each in different facilities, Russia and Mexico, we have a unique perspective and are able to relate to the concerns of an HSCT patient no matter what stage they're at in their HSCT journey. EPISODE NOTES: - 2nd transplants  - Were you misdiagnosed? - Do you even have MS? - Many diseases mimic MS - The average percentage of patients who relapse post HSCT - Explaining in detail his thoughts on treating PPMS and non-active SPMS patients - What is RPMS (relapsing progressive MS) and would he offer HSCT to RPMS patients? - The type of regimen he would recommend If progressive MS is treated with HSCT - If not HSCT, what types of treatments does he recommend for PPMS and non-active SPMS patients? - Does he have any dietary recommendations for HSCT patients either before or after HSCT? - His thoughts on carbohydrates - The Epstein Barr virus (EBV) connection to MS - Following EBV titers after transplant LINKS: Episode #1 on YouTube: https://youtu.be/ezjhqHtYA8Y This episode, #2 of 2, on YouTube:  https://youtu.be/40dqLdIeZlc Dr. Burt's book, EVERYDAY MIRACLES: https://www.amazon.com/Everyday-Miracles-Scleroderma-Autoimmune-Hematopoietic/dp/1637631251 Dr. Burt's website:  https://astemcelljourney.com/about/drrichardburt/ Email to apply for HSCT with Dr. Burt: BURTRRMSTrial@scrippshealth.org THE MS GYM: Website YouTube Facebook Instagram BROOKE SLICK: Website Instagram JODI FELTHAM: TikTok Instagram

It all started at 12 years old. From Anorexia, as each mental health diagnosis got snubbed out and replaced with another, right through to Bipolar 1, Sarah Fay was strapped in to ride a 2.5 decade mental health rollercoaster as she grappled with understanding the labels, wrestled with suicidality and navigated life from a very narrow lens that never once offered any hope of ‘recovery'.  Sarah is now an award-winning author, creative writing teacher and keynote speaker who is living proof that healing from mental illness is available to everyone. We explore the pros and cons of mental health terms and labels and share ideas on how our relationship with our stories and circumstances can greatly affect our mental health. It's fair to say I immediately dubbed Sarah as my newest podcast bestie and could have kept talking with her for hours. I hope you enjoy this conversation and Sarah's perspectives as much as I did. Sarah Fay is the author of the memoir, Pathological: The True Story of Six Misdiagnoses. Pathological explores the consequences of overidentifying with a psychiatric diagnosis and how doing so can lead to self-stigmatization and self-limitation. During this episode of Ever Forward, Sarah discusses mental health diagnoses, from what they are to where they come from, how she lived through six of them, and how we can embrace and understand them better as a society. The stigma that society places on mental illness is well known, but what about the stigma we place on ourselves? Could that actually be more harmful? In Sarah's opinion, yes.  Sarah discusses candidly in this episode how being diagnosed with Anorexia as a child caused her to over identify with the diagnosis and attach her thoughts and feelings to it, which led her to believe that she wouldn't be capable of doing many things in life, such as maintain a long-term relationship or hold down a full-time job. Fortunately, Sarah's perspective on her mental health has evolved to where she doesn't feel this way anymore. Her ability to reframe her diagnoses and honor her experiences has been a result of good mental health practitioners, a supportive family, and her willingness to take charge of learning more about her diagnoses and where mental health diagnoses come from.  Follow Sarah on Instagram @sarahfayauthor Follow Sarah on Twitter @sarahfayauthor Follow Chase on Instagram @chase_chewning Follow him on Twitter @chasechewning Key Highlights: Sarah discusses the experience of receiving her first psychiatric diagnosis at the age of 12 and what led to it. If you've listened to SelfWork, or read my book Perfectly Hidden Depression, you know that I've cautioned about doctors and clinicians' overdependence on the DSM-V (The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition). In this riveting conversation with the author of Pathological: The True Story of Six Misdiagnoses and activist Sarah Fay, she tells her story of being labeled with six different diagnoses during three decade  of treatment, all accompanied by prescribed medications with, at times, very difficult side effects, and numerous therapy techniques. Until finally, one psychiatrist told her - after the typical 30 minute initial visit - "I don't know what you have." His humility and caution changed her life, and she began looking into exactly what this "DSM" was and learning how subjective mental health diagnoses can be. She's also quick to say that she's developed a healthy respect for mental health providers, as the field is a complex one to navigate. And as a provider myself, I know that there are many facets to "diagnosing" that have to be considered. That said, an accurate diagnosis takes more than 30 minutes to determine. So, in this episode sponsored by BetterHelp, I hope you'll learn more about how mental illness diagnoses are made - and how you can have a conversation with your provider or clinician to make sure that you are truly seen and understood, not "labeled." Welcome to the second part of a two-part series on neuro-diversity and mental health. If you happened to miss the first one, you can check out our dialogue with M.E. Thomas on psychopathy (FYD 277). On this episode of Christopher Lochhead: Follow Your Different, we talk about how to improve your mental health. And who better to have that conversation but with Sarah Fay, PhD. Sarah Fay is a bestselling author, and her new book is called Pathological: The True Story of Six Misdiagnoses. Apple books said Sarah's new book is “a powerful memoir by a deeply compelling person and a fantastic writer.” Whether you are curious about neuro-diversity, or looking for ways to improve your mental health, you can't go wrong with listening to this episode. The world that Sarah Fay lives in The conversation starts off on the topic of how Sarah is processing the world we live in today. As someone who was in the vacuum of the academe for a while, one might not even notice the world outside. Sarah admits that she pretty much missed the Obama administration while she was working on her PhD. There is a certain appeal of the academe of being away from the world and being surrounded by actual books, and being in pursuit of knowledge. That is, until the world comes calling. How things have changed Sarah shares that she has been writing about how different things have changed for her and how she saw herself. One of the things she has noticed is the change in her mental health, and how it has changed for the better. “I was writing about how different things have changed for me and how I see myself. Now as someone who had a mental illness, I believe I've been cured. There's no evidence to suggest that we cannot fully heal from mental illness, even serious mental illness like what I had.” – Sarah Fay Sarah finds the notion that mental illness only lies dormant at times very pessimistic, as it sets the precedent that it could never be fully healed. The Metaphor of Mental Illness Sarah shares the metaphor of mental illness that she absolutely loves, which is much like breaking a bone. “When you break a bone after it heals (which I didn't know, this is in physical medicine), the point of the break becomes the strongest part. And so if we think of mental illness, or some sort of psychosis as a break, then we heal stronger.” – Sarah Fay And if you look how resilient and strong people are who have recovered from mental illness, it makes a whole lot of sense for Sarah.
