A warm welcome today to Alan Shirley GP and Medical Educator to talk about A Fortunate Man: The story of a country doctor. The seminal John Berger and Jean Mohr book which has to a certain extent stood the test of time and has very much been the classic book mentioned when people talk about medical humanities or about books that relate to GP training. It's not a book just for GPs though and and I really enjoyed my conversation with Alan about the elements of this book that are problematic as well as the elements which have stood the test of time and also how beautifully it sits with Polly Morland's more recent book A Fortunate Woman.Alan and I mention a number of models/theories of the consultation and if you want to know more or have forgotten what you once knew this is a great overview https://www.essentialgptrainingbook.com/wp-content/online-resources/04%20consultation%20models.pdfWe mentioned Darren Garvey's superb book Poverty Safari as well as Bridget Christie's comedy series "The Change" which is available on Channel 4.As ever if you want to buy books I'd always recommend an independent bookshop, my favourite is Scarthin in Cromford and they are amazing online/by phone too: https://scarthinbooksonline.com/

3 million heat pumps were installed in Europe in 2022 (up 38% year on year) with some markets going crazy (Poland went up 120%). The movement is not limited to Europe, as US annual sales rose above 4 million units for the first time in 2022 (more than gas boilers). As the deployment of heat pumps has reached an inflection point in 2022, we wanted to dig deep into the decarbonisation of heating. We wanted to talk about new technologies, economics and government interventions which are sometimes good (ban of new oil and gas boilers, subsidies) sometimes bad (electrons are more taxed than molecules). This silent revolution needed a voice, and that's our friend Jan Rosenow. Jan is the European Director of the Regulatory Assistance Project, a global energy think tank working on clean energy. He is also an Honorary Fellow at Oxford University. Jan Rosenow is a global heat pump expert and has tracked heat pump markets around the world. He works with policy makers all over Europe to craft and implement more effective policies to drive the transition. And of course, we talk about Hydrogen (spoiler alert, not in great terms) References https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H3jIRRzF6d0https://www.nature.com/articles/s41560-022-01104-8https://www.raponline.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/RAP_Heat_Pump_Toolkit.pdfWe thank our friends and partners Aquila Capital, for supporting the show
Weather is never out of the news. From an extreme and later than normal hurricane season in the US to record-breaking cold snaps in China and Korea all within the space of a few weeks, it's fairly obvious that we should care about forecasting. Especially as we're likely to get more extreme weather in the future. This week, we take a look at how experts and tech companies are developing up-to-the-minute solutions to predicting our weather woes. This is Technology Now, a weekly show from Hewlett Packard Enterprise. We spend an average of four hours on our phones each day, with most of us checking them 90-120 times, and for some, it's 250+ pickups in a single day! Disability Employment and EntrepreneurshipA central aim of Australia's National Disability Scheme is to improve employment opportunities for people with disability. One of the ways to do this is to support people with a disability to start and run their own business. There isn't much research in this area, but some new research about why people with a disability want to start their own business, the barriers they face, what has worked, and what support is available were all topics covered when ASID spoke to Professor Simon Darcy, at the University of Technology Sydney. Read the transcript of this interview on the ASID website.Read more about this project, and access additional resources including reports and watch some videos with people with a disability that were involved in the research talk about the issues they have faced in starting and running their own business. There are also links to some of the employment support programs that are mentioned in the podcastDisability Entrepreneurship | University of Technology Sydney (uts.edu.au)ASID recently highlighted employment issues relating to transition to work which are available in plain english: https://www.asid.asn.au/files/3556_transition_to_work_plain_english.pdfWe want to hear from you!We would like to hear from NDIS participants, people with intellectual disability and their families, who want to share their experience about trying to start a business. School Board ElectionsOne of the most important offices in your state! We are hearing from citizens they want to "DO SOMETHING!” THIS IS IT!The time is right to win school board elections!! Parents are fired up and ready to work. OREGON PRIE has a PAC, now! We can endorse candidates and raise money for their races. January 2021 is the beginning of an election cycle that could change public schools, dramatically. Is this the year you will take your school board, back?Parents are intimidated and frustrated with their elected representatives on the School Board. They testify at public meetings, and attend work sessions only to be told the schools must comply with state Standards. Herein lies the problem! Who, then represents parents' concerns? Who protects children from controversial curriculums? School Board Members legally have control of school policies. Although they are often reminded at Association meetings they have the power to create and change policy, they rarely do. Superintendents often encourage members to comply with requests from the state Department of Education. Why? so they can look good. But wait, aren't Superintendents hired by the school board? ...The best strategy is to elect representatives of like-mind to school board positions. School board elections are coming up this spring. Election dates vary from state to state, but Director seats are up for election in every district. When you have a majority on your board, our role is much easier!Have you ever attended your local board meeting? My first thought was… who are these people? How did they get here? It can be difficult to know who to vote for when there is little information available in a non-partisan political race. Groups like the National Education Association and Planned Parenthood make it their business to elect people to these positions. They provide campaign funding and resources. Parents' Rights In Education is committed to stopping the blatant take over of our local schools, by supporting candidates who will honor Parents' Rights. Want to do this? It' time to recruit candidates!!Step #1 - Go to the Secretary of State's website and search school board elections. You are looking for the filing dates, registration forms, and deadline to file. Make a note of the election date, too.ELECTION: May 18, 2021 https://www.co.washington.or.us/AssessmentTaxation/Elections/upload/2021-LOCAL-ELECTIONS-CALENDAR-120319.pdfStep #2 - Then, go to your school district website and search the school board director information to determine who is up for re-election this cycle. Some districts have geographical Zones which the Directors represent.STEP #3 - Recruit candidates! They must file with the SOS's office by the published deadline.Candidate Filing February 6, 2021 to March 18, 2021OREGON Registration Form: https://sos.oregon.gov/elections/Documents/SEL190.pdfWe will publish information on FB Groups and Pages. Start an affiliate PRIE Chapter in your state, so you can be a part of this.We are partnering with an election training organization so we can provide on line training for our candidates. In addition, PRIE will assist with messaging and other campaign strategies.Contact us! Fill out our Join Us! form on the PRIE website. We will connect you with like-minded parents and School Board members in your area, so together we can make a difference, and defeSupport the show (https://www.parentsrightsined.com/support-the-cause.html)

We need to be heart-centered, giving more than ever before. We need to listen and create a space for our community to feel safe to share and ask for whatever help looks like for them.
