Have you ever wondered how our expectations can impact the way we perceive and interact with others? Well, it's actually been demonstrated that beliefs and attitudes can lead to outcomes that align with those beliefs, due to what's known as the Pygmalion effect. 20th century American psychologist Robert Rosenthal coined the term in 1968. He had teamed up with San Francisco elementary school principal Lenore Jacobson to conduct a groundbreaking experiment. It showed that teacher behaviour and attitude could actually influence their students' achievements. Where does the name come from? What did Rosenthal and Jacobson's experiment consist of? Send us a textGerard Grogans has a very powerful message to share, and one we should all listen to in this really fascinating episode! A passing comment from his mother when he was young, about how he 'looked tired' completely changed the course of Gerard's life! The comment had a deeper meaning to Gerard and he would spend his life saving up for eye surgery to 'fix' the dark circles around his eyes. Of course his Mother had meant nothing from the comment, but it became all Gerard could think about. Eventually, a botched surgery took Gerard to the depths of darkness and questioning everything. But in the darkness, Gerard found strength, and purpose, and began to shed his fears and embrace his belief and love for himself. It's very inspiring!!Gerard now teaches how the Pygmalion Effect leads to the conscious and unconscious decision we make in our lives and how that imprinting affects everything we do. If you are a lean thinker, you are probably working to continually improve your skills in communicating with the adults in your life. You may also be working to bring some lean thinking into your family life. But what if you have some pre-teens in your family circle? They can be very challenging to work with – and that is where Marcus Higgs can help us. He works with parents of pre-teens to help them improve their connection with the kids at a time when the kids are beginning to establish their unique identities. Marcus Aurelius Higgs. Marcus Aurelius Higgs works with Certain Future to support parents of pre-teens (10-14 y.o.), helping them show up and maintain meaningful relationships with their children during these 'identity-breaking' years. He collaborates with parents who want to be present with their son or daughter before it is too late to bridge the gap. Using 'The SHOW UP Framework,' Marcus helps parents benefit by ensuring they are confident in their communication when their tween starts having big emotions, knowing how to be present when their pre-teen starts to withdraw, so their child continues to trust them and naturally opens up difficult conversations, and understanding how to support their child in ways that develop self-belief and resilience. Parents should hold space for collaboration with their kids, working with them rather than doing things for them. Written letters expressing pride and support can be a powerful tool for opening up communication with teens. Parents should seek support from a parent pod or a network of trusted adults to share the responsibility of parenting. Social media can impact the sense of identity, and it is important to help children understand their worth beyond likes and virtual validation. Memorable Quotes From Marcus Aurelius Higgs. The Pygmalion Effect is yet another studied but not well understood psychological phenomenon. Using positive belief, expectation, or reinforcement can make the impossible become possible! No, we are not speaking of positive affirmations. This takes actual involvement of your emotions. You can learn to tap into this effect. Or someone else can raise your standards or belief through holding high expectations on your ability. Looking into this I noticed something. Did you know that you have the power to literally shape the way someone perceives themselves at an unconscious level? There is a psychological phenomenon called the Pygmalion Effect that is one of the most powerful tools that we all have at our disposal that few people are aware of. The Pygmalion Effect is always happening. Unfortunately, it's often happening in an unconscious way creating tremendous damage and division in our relationships and society. As we approach another election season here in the United States, it's imperative that we understand that our divisions and reactions toward other people and groups are largely a result of the Pygmalion Effect. I would like to invite you to give this important episode a careful listen.

In this episode, we delve into the transformative power of the Pygmalion Effect, exploring the landmark experiment by psychologists Rosenthal and Jacobson. We uncover how our expectations can significantly influence the performance and behavior of others, especially children. By understanding this psychological phenomenon, parents and educators can unlock a greater potential in the young minds they guide. Key Takeaways: The Pygmalion Effect demonstrates how positive expectations can enhance an individual's performance. ✅ Rosenthal and Jacobson's experiment in 1968 revealed that teacher expectations could significantly affect student achievement. ✅ This effect emphasizes the importance of nurturing environments for child development. ✅ As parents and educators, adopting high but realistic expectations can lead to higher achievement and self-esteem in children. ✅

In this episode, Kathy discusses the profound impact our subconscious beliefs can have on our dogs' behavior, drawing on the concept of the Pygmalion Effect or Self-fulfilling Prophecy. Common frustrations and challenges dog moms face, like reactivity, over-excitement, and disobedience, can be transformed by starting with a shift from judgment to understanding and support. Negative beliefs about our dogs can create a challenging loop of behavior that spirals into meltdowns or shutdowns, while positive perceptions can lead to more harmonious interactions. Kathy's message is clear: when dog moms believe in cooperation, they create an environment where both they and their dogs can thrive. Key Takeaways Our subconscious beliefs about our dogs can significantly shape their behavior, illustrating the Pygmalion Effect. Viewing dogs' behaviors as forms of communication encourages a more empathetic and effective response to their needs. Changing our perception from seeing our dogs as problematic to understanding their actions can transform our relationship with them. Accepting and loving our dogs as they are can lead to significant positive changes in their behavior and our relationship with them. LOVE TO LEARN MORE? Physical Restraints tend to be in response to intense, often times violent, situations and will have some degree of traumatizing effect on both the staff and the client. The neurochemical changes in the brain that are caused by traumatic incidents don't automatically reset. Instead, memories of the incident are stored in your brain with the emotional content that the incident evoked. Parts of your body, your muscles and nervous system, also store the stress caused by the incident, long after the incident has ended. It can be very tempting to turn to coercion, essentially intimidation and force, to try and change the extreme behaviors that many children in residential treatment exhibit. That's because we instinctively understand that human beings will change their behaviors most quickly in order to avoid pain and unwanted consequences. However, behavioral change motivated by a coercive environment tends to not be internalized or generalized by clients. That means that upon leaving a residential treatment program, the old behaviors reappear. Instead of using coercion, even though it “works” more quickly, an effective treatment program encourages the growth of executive skills in children and youth and fosters cooperation from clients rather obedience. As a staff person your attitude toward the clients impacts their functioning. The Pygmalion Effect (aka the Rosenthal Effect) refers to the observation that people will change their demonstrated abilities based on the expectations of other people. Kids will perform down to any low expectations you have for them. Likewise, the Stanford Prisoner Experiment demonstrated that if you think of yourself as a tough authority figure, such as a guard, and you think about your clients as something akin to prisoners, then sadistic tendencies will be more likely to emerge in you. It helps to keep in mind that people are not their behaviors. The children and youth in your care are complex human beings with emotions, cognitions, behaviors, executive skills, relationships with others and tasks for which they've taken responsibility. All behavior happens for a reason. You may not know what that reason is, but give the kids in your care credit for even their most unpleasant behaviors being an attempt to get their needs met. Anticipation and training are two qualities that will protect you from some of the traumatizing effects of restraint situations. Try to anticipate the various emotional reactions you might have to a restraint – including you might go frosty and not feel a lot during the actual process. Alternatively, you might feel elated at a restraint that goes well, or you might feel devastated by a restraint that doesn't go well. Try to balance your feelings afterwards. Your program should have a formal training program in the actual physical techniques used in physical restraint. However, you may benefit from extra coaching and practice. You might have to seek that out. Once a restraint has been fully established, pay attention to your body and breathing. Relax any muscle groups that aren't necessary to maintain the hold. Pay particularly attention to your grip, which may be much harder than is needed. Pay attention to your breathing. Perhaps do some simple breathing exercises such as focusing on exhaling first and then relaxing and letting the inhalations happen automatically. Check-in with the other members of your team. Someone simply asking if everyone is okay, needs to shift, needs to sub out, produces neurochemicals that counter the stress hormones that are flooding everyone's bodies. Talking to the client, while the restraint is going on, can be very agitating for some clients, especially kids who struggle with processing words. In other cases, simple soothing statements appear to be helpful. In some cases, staff conversing among themselves has seemed to help a kid calm down. There's no universal formula for this. Don't forget about the other kids. If other children in the program have been impacted by the restraint situtation, checking-in with them, and reassuring them around safety helps minimize the trauma effects they might be experiencing just from what they've seen or heard.

She emphasizes the power of using AI to dismantle and avoid negative self-fulfilling prophecies and even improve your interactions with co-teachers and parents. Ellen Drolette is a certified Appreciative Inquiry practitioner and has found innovative ways to work AI into the practices of early childhood education. She earned her certificate at Champlain College under the direction of Dr. Lindsey Godwin. Ellen brings nearly 30 years of experience to the early childhood field. It had everything to do with me and my attitude and how I was showing up for that day… That really was very impactful for me.” “If you know your co-teacher's not a morning person, don't try to engage with them in the morning, but also, recognizing what is going well with that teacher… that can go a long way... when you say that you appreciate the way someone did something, it's so powerful.” What is Appreciative Inquiry? Appreciative Inquiry, sometimes referred to as “the other AI”, is one of the best kept secrets behind meaningful and lasting change at organizations. The AI approach is strength-based, meaning it focuses on identifying and leveraging successes to solve problems, rather than focusing on trying to fix individual failures. Sometimes we equate having children to having problems! And that can actually be part of the the issue - how we see our own children. Of course all children have problems. All adults do as well! Yet somehow we get in our heads that our kids should be doing better than we ever did as kids. Or at the very least we expect them to be doing better than they are.We forget that to learn, to grow, to master, takes repeated practice. And as we reframe our expectations with that in mind, the Pygmalion Effect kicks in in our favor to work mighty miracles in reconnecting our hearts to theirs so that they feel and know that they belong, that they are beautiful, and that they can overcome. This is where joy lives!Become a Parenting Hero:Go to https://revolutionaryfamilies.comEnter your name and email addressGain access to The #1 Parenting Secret Connect with us!FB @ Revolutionary FamiliesIG @ RevolutionaryFamiliesTikTok @ RevolutionaryFamilies

This week our topic is Healing and today's Connection Thursday we are discussing the power of the Pygmalion Effect. The Pygmalion Effect works in a pendulum of expectation. If you expect negative and poor performance in another you will get poor performance. If you expect positive and high performance in another you will get positive performance. The Pygmalion Effect is always in play within yourself and every single relationship you have. ________________________________________________________ Join The Stress Mastery Community today for FREE! The Bigotry of Low Expectations. Do your expectations change depending on who you are dealing with? What makes your expectations change? Are there some, who you have lower expectations of than others? Do you know why you lower the bar? Be sure to Like and Follow us on our facebook page. Check out our website www.LikeItMatters.Net. We hear words thrown around today in an abusive, attacking way. The Word BIGOT and RACIST seem to be the greatest words that have been weaponized against those who we disagree with. Bigotry is defined as obstinate or unreasonable attachment to a belief, opinion, or faction; in particular, prejudice against a person or people on the basis of their membership of a particular group. Bigotry can be simplified as the possession or expression of strong, unreasonable prejudices or opinions. Today we want to consider how we might be bigoted in lowering the bar of expectations of certain people. Our expectations of others, says a lot about ourselves, not just others. In the study of expectations there are two types of self-fulfilling prophecies. They are called the Pygmalion effect (if a supervisor thinks her subordinates will succeed, they are more likely to succeed) and the Galatea effect (if a person thinks he will succeed, he is more likely to succeed). Today let us consider that it is bigotry to have low expectations of others, based on anything but specific, historical interactions with that personpeople. Hi, I'm Christy Shriver and we're here to discuss books that have changed the world and have changed us. And I'm Garry Shriver and this is the How to Love Lit Podcast. This episode we are wrapping up our three-part series on George Bernard Shaw otherwise known as GBS and his phenomenally successful play, Pygmalion. In week 1, we introduced Shaw, some of his political ideologies, the Greek myth Pygmalion from where Shaw took his inspiration, as well as ACT 1. Last week, we discussed Acts 2 and 3. We talked about Rosenthal's revolutionary psychological discovery named the Pygmalion Effect. We spoke to the symbolism of language, of clothes, of the gramophone, and mirrors. We highlighted the parallels between Alfred Doolittle and Professor Higgins. We allowed Shaw to preach at us as he humorously characterized the “undeserving poor”, and “middle class morality”, all Shavian terms, and finally we got to Eliza, the flower girl transformed into a duchess crashing through that point of no return otherwise known as the climax. She fools all of good society into thinking she's genteel getting away with declaring that it was “not bloody likely” she'd be walking home but would be taking a taxi. And of course, all of this is very didactic, a word he uses to mean moralizing, but it's also very very funny. We smile when Alfred Doolittle justifies begging for money to buy liquor by claiming that it couldn't possibly ruin him. It would all be gone by the end of the weekend. He further claims (and of course this is Shaw's voice moral judgement toward us theater attenders) that anyone would be as immoral as he, if we were also the undeserving poor. He's simply too poor to afford morals; morals are luxuries of the middle class. Shaw's wit is on full display when he's sermonizing which brings us to the final two acts of the play. Of course, they sermonize the most, but also are arguably the most entertaining for the same reason. We referenced the end of the play and that Shaw would never have endorsed the thematic license My Fair Lady took with the ending, but today we will make Shaw's case for him as to why. For a good long time, I was with the rest of the world and was highly irritated at Shaw's anti-climatic ending. Having said that, after reading his sequel, hearing his commentary, and understanding better Shaw's purposes for having it end the way it does, I now completely agree with Shaw, there is no other way to end the play but for Higgins and Eliza to part ways. Well, there went that, I hope it's okay we're going spoil the ending at this point. Well, let me put it this way, if you've watched My Fair Lady, or Pygmalion, you may think that Shaw think that Shaw spoiled his own ending because there is not a happily ever after ending to this romantic comedy. People feel deceived when they get to the end because romantic comedies are not supposed to end in angst but especially one with the word romance in the title. We haven't brough it out yet, but there is a subtitle to this play, and many have claimed Shaw has misled us with what he's attempting to do in the play through the subtitle. The full title of the play is Pygmalion, a Romance in Five Acts. He labels it a romantic comedy, and most people reading that reasonably assume certain characteristics that are usual to comedies, at least classically modeled ones. For one, there should be a wedding at the end, and secondly, the lead man should end up with the lead woman, a love story gone right. Everyone knows, comedies end in marriage; tragedies end in death. As a mindset mentor and coach one of my greatest gifts is my ability to see the potential in others and help them remove the mental blind spots holding them back. It wasn't until I met Kaitlin Baker that I realized the full power and potential of being a true cheerleader in life. She taught me that we can borrow our belief to others in a powerful way by simply encouraging and celebrating them in every moment. In this episode we discuss the Pygmalion Effect and how having some one believe in you and cheer you on can me a complete game changer. Unfortunately in life we have people including loved ones that don't always celebrate our wins. In fact they sometimes do the complete opposite. Instead of lifting us up and believing we can they find fault and the reasons we can't. Surrounding yourself with people that celebrate YOU and your wins is the difference between staying stagnant and having major wins. Life is full of challenges and a key part of enjoying the ride is celebrating every win no matter how small. You are kind of a big deal, find that belief in yourself and surround yourself with people that cheer you on.
Self-Image is EverythingSeason 1, Episode 11 The cause of all change and success comes down to the thoughts, feelings and beliefs about yourself. That internal change will create an external change in your results. Whatever goal you want to achieve, or any result you want in your life comes down to this idea of self-image, or who you think you are. The biggest obstacle to your success will always be your SELF. 3:09 - Your self-image sets the boundary of your accomplishments. Most people do not believe they are worth more, and therefore do not receive more. 4:31 - If you want to change your results, you have to change how you see yourself. Reality is always a projection of yourself and your beliefs. 7:07 - To begin to change your self-image, you need to examine your current beliefs and where they come from . 8:13 - One of the criticisms of law of attraction is how people question that a child could be responsible for circumstances like abuse. You cannot be responsible for events without the awareness, maturity and guidance to adjust what events you are attracting. 9:53 - Responsibility for who you are and the results you get only comes when you are aware of how your self-image is creating your results. 10:26 - Our self-image and programming in our subconscious mind is created by the circumstances of our lives and the conclusions we have about our experiences. 13:22 - When you have the moment of awareness that your self-image is creating your life, it is a moment you can choose to continue believing you are not worth it, or believe something new. This is being responsible. 14:12 - The only way you are going to change your self-image is to have a goal or an ideal bigger than your current results. For reference, check out the episode on “Setting the Right Goal.” This is because no one wakes up excited about challenging their limiting beliefs. You need a reason to grow. 16:56 - Once you have your goal, you want to get in touch with the energy of your goal and objectively look at yourself and ask “How do I see myself different in that goal?” 18:15 - Doing the work on yourself means to start BE-ING that version of you, now. The state of being that attracts to us the new results. 19:33 - Questions to ask yourself and trust your intuitive answers that come: How do you see yourself differently compared to today? How would the world see you differently? How do you think differently about yourself? How do you think differently about money if you had $1MM in your bank account? How would you feel different about money? How would you feel differently about the money you get to invest, spend or circulate? How would you dress differently? What would your body language and facial expressions be like? What different habits would you have? Where do I find myself limited right now? 22:51 - You combine your responses above into a self-image script and listen to it daily, read it frequently, and write it over and over to reprogram your subconscious mind with its ideas. 23:41 - You can also use the people you admirer as examples of characteristics and attributes you have unexpressed along with traits you currently love about yourself to make your self-image clearer. 25:45 - Why so much repetition? Because beliefs are ideas which were programmed through repetition in the first place. 27:08 - Your state of being, your self-image, is not just about the thoughts and feelings, it is about the actions. Integrate the new state of being into your behavior. 29:02 - Who are you really? You are and unlimited being. You have unlimited potential. This acceptance gives you the courage to act on your new self-image. 30:10 - When you try to do something beyond your belief system, your mind will continue to generation obstacles until you quit and give up. 32:13 - All things are created twice, spiritual and then physically. Your self-image is no different. 34:27 - The Pygmalion Effect says, I am not who I think I am. I am not who you think I am. I am who I think you think I am. One of the greatest fears we have is the criticism from people around you that holds you back. — If this episode inspired you or resonated in some way, don't forget to subscribe to never miss an episode.
