After a long wait, LCM have published a brand new piano syllabus- which covers exams from Pre-Preparatory level to Grade 8. Find out how it compares to ABRSM, Trinity, and Rockschool Classical's recent new syllabuses. A written summary of this review is available here: https://heartofthepiano.com/summary-of-podcast-review-lcm-london-college-of-music-2021-piano-syllabus/ Show Notes Who are LCM/ London College of Music? [0:50] The previous 2018-2020 LCM Piano Syllabus [2:15] Some general impressions of the new syllabus: [5:15] Longer larger-scale pieces, longer exams than other examination boards Bold extrovert pieces often with many character and mood shifts within a piece Excellent finds of relatively obscure high quality music New List A,B & C categories similar to ABRSM's new lists but often unclear logic to the categorisation Who is this new syllabus for? [11:45] Difficulty level on the high side- could be rigorous path for traditional classical music (defining contemporary classical within the tradition) Rigorous & comprehensive scales (or studies) Concern- weak benchmarking- big difference in difficulty levels within each grade. But also a concern about being harder to pass than other boards- not only scales/studies, but also that most pieces are much longer, therefore the longer exam needs more focus and stamina Huge emphasis on women composers, therefore of particular interest to female students The different exam options available with LCM [19:50] Grades, Recital Grades, Leisure Play and Performance Awards, with Covid-friendly online options available for the first three as well. Huge alternative list for pieces [25:30] but many unlikely to be used as obscure & hard to listen to, or to check out the sheet music Would like to see more variety of styles in some grade books [28:00] Problematic editing and typesetting [30:00] Editing too minimal, would like to see at least some suggestions & notes. No courtesy accidentals where desperately needed Some very unhelpful visual distribution of rhythms Pre, Step 1 & Step 2 comes across as a 'Melanie Spanswick and Friends' method book [33:35] I'd personally prefer to use a different method book The problem of lack of non 'white European/American' composers in the books, especially given LCM's strong mission to represent more women composers as role models [37:10] Also tone-deafness to race issues when they do come up in the books- ie the use of 'gypsy' and issues with representation of Jewish identity Conclusion [50:45] For most students, I prefer Trinity: value for money, variety of pieces, rigorous enough, good benchmarking, motivational LCM has edge for 'serious' traditional (including contemporary) classical music (serious doesn't mean boring! Pieces are full of emotional expression and colour). Talented classical disciplined students will really benefit from this syllabus Final comparision between the different boards: ABRSM, Trinity, Rockschool Classical, and LCM Notes: When I was quoting the figure of only 2 non-white Europeans represented in the Grades 5-8 books, I meant to say non-white Europeans or Americans Oops, I think I was mis-remembering this article when I said Gershwin married a Jewish woman- the article says he actually never married because he apparently wanted a Jewish wife- https://www.jweekly.com/2007/09/06/definitive-book-on-gershwin-should-come-with-comfy-chair/ The old LCM syllabus is valid until the end of the Summer 2022 exam session Links: LCM's piano syllabus website: https://lcme.uwl.ac.uk/exams/piano/piano The Heart of the Piano review of the 2021 ABRSM and Trinity syllabuses: https://heartofthepiano.com/e17-why-im-moving-my-students-from-abrsm-to-trinity-reviews-of-their-new-2021-piano-syllabuses/ The Heart of the Piano review of the 2021 Rockschool Classical syllab...

In this episode we’re talking to Fatima Jones, who I check in with almost weekly, getting a read on everything from the Black cultural landscape and how to keep my proverbial wig on straight when folks try us (you know how that goes), to understanding how to make the marketing and communications of our Black arts spaces sing, and whose family I love love love. We met through a mutual sister-friend Jessica Lynne, and continue to be sisters in this space and beyond. Fatima has joined hands with the Red Olive Universe and hosted one of the last in-person events known to man: a brunch in her house in Bed Stuy Brooklyn before we all retreated into our homes. That communal connection—around Black art, Black culture, small and community-based Black arts organizations, and the new and old friends who love them—has continued to inspire me through the past year. Fatima Jones is a cultural strategist, marketing, public relations and reputation management leader. She currently serves as Senior Director of Marketing and Communications at the Apollo Theater, a nonprofit arts and cultural anchor committed to Black artists and audiences, located in Harlem, NY. She is the former Director of P.R. for the Brooklyn Museum (BKM) where she led the media relations and social media campaigns for all of its exhibitions, including the critically acclaimed David Bowie Is and the transformative We Wanted A Revolution: Black Radical Women. Prior to Brooklyn Museum, she spent almost a decade at the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM). Her consultancy experience includes work with Ronald K. Brown/Evidence Dance Company, Weeksville Heritage Center and 651 ARTS. She is a former voting member of the Bessies Dance and Performance Awards and has served on many granting panels, including NYSCA and Mid-Atlantic Arts Foundation. She is a mother and wife, currently living in Brooklyn, NY. We review Doctor Sleep as a movie event! If you’ve seen it, great. If not, we urge to do so by the end of our non-spoiler section. But in either case, enjoy our movie event awards show for the sequel to the Shining as we make up all kinds of fake awards to give this movie. Format of This Review - 1:42 NONSPOILER REVIEW: (& FYI, Some Semi-Vague Gerald's Game Spoilers) Specs, Premise, Scores Awards - 2:45 Cast and Performance Awards - 9:40 Production Awards - 14:37 The Biggest Nonspoiler Awards - 17:20 Watch or Not? - 20:49 SPOILER WARNING DANCE BREAK - 22:50 SPOILER-FILLED REVIEW: Fan Service + Flanagan Fingerprints - 24:10 A Quick Disagreement On Child Murder - 28:35 Best Scenes Awards- 33:30 Oscar Caliber Scene - 40:12 Lowlights Awards - 42:50 Misc. Awards- 48:58 FINAL GRADE - 53:54 Your Homework/PLEASE LEAVE US 5*’S - 56:55 What’s Next From MMO/Words of Wisdom - 58:00 Our Movie Event Review format is simple. Yes, there is still a non-spoiler section followed by spoilers, and there’s a dance music interlude to warn you. Yes, we still go through many of the same beats, bests, and worsts. But in essence, a movie event episode consists of this academy of two making up awards. For Doctor Sleep, we certainly came up with some weird ones. So yes, that non-spoiler section deals with the cast & crew, the premise of the plot, and general reviews of the production values, performances, and script. Then in spoilers, we go over all our best & worst scenes after discussing some of the major plotlines. Did Doctor Sleep spark our nostalghia for The Shining? For Stephen King novels? Did Rose The Hat become an iconic villain deserving of her own Halloween costume? Was it worthy of a 2 and a half hour runtime? Do we dare suggest enhancements to the plot? Which cast members should vie for future Oscars, and which are the most memorable scenes? - We discuss these questions and many more in this review. Plus, we make up a ton of weird ass awards along the way. If you enjoyed this episode, then make sure you click on our “Playlists” tab on Soundcloud. We have a “Movie Event Reviews” playlist with It 2, Ready Or Not, Good Boys, Spider-Man: Far From Home, Midsommar, etc. We also have a playlist entitled “#AllTheHorror: Everything MMO Horror Related,” which includes The Scaries, our horror movie awards show as well as series on the Michael Myers / Halloween franchise, the Conjuring Universe, & The Joker Character Study. God, this movie pissed us off. Usually, this is a film appreciation podcast, and even here, we give It Chapter Two a lot of credit. But very few movies have fired us up as much as this one did in a negative review. In other words, we freak the hell out. Format of This Review - 1:41 NONSPOILER REVIEW: Specs, Box Office Awards - 2:28 Cast and Performance Awards -9:02 Production Awards - 11:43 Is This a Movie Event? - 18:24 SPOILER WARNING DANCE BREAK - 21:48 SPOILER-FILLED REVIEW: Nonspoiler Carryover Awards - 23:01 Our First Plot Awards- 24:32 The “Ending Sucks” Awards- 27:34 Reunited in Derry Awards - 32:49 One Mike Flips Out - 38:36 “Let’s Split Up” Awards - 41:37 The Other Mike Flips Out- 44:34 Finale Awards - 51:33 Horror Movies and Their Rules - 56:45 Superlative Awards - 58:25 FINAL GRADE - 1:00:47 Your Homework/PLEASE LEAVE US 5*’S - 1:02:13 What’s Next From MMO/Words of Wisdom - 1:03:08 It Chapter Two is our 6th Movie Event review of the year. We’ve also covered Ready Or Not, Good Boys, Spider-Man: Far From Home, Midsommar, and Annabelle Comes Homes, and this is the third review doing our new mock award show format, which is really just a fun way to frame our superlatives and hot takes that tends to spark conversation. Don’t worry if you haven’t seen the movie yet. We open with a non-spoiler section first, before we dive into the plot, and you’ll have a spoiler warning to signal that off for you. As for a psychological difference between segments, the non-spoiler section is relatively analytical, if not deliberately a bit vague, and that spoiler section is where the yelling begins. Normally, we don’t get this hyped up for a movie review and can keep our cool better than this. But we told you when we started, we’re gonna be honest with you. Was it our high expectations? Were the comparisons to the better first film unavoidable? Did this movie just suck? Or are we just a couple of snobs spoiled by all the Oscar movies we have to review? We consider all of this as well. If you’re left wanting more from an evil clown movie or if you just can’t get enough of them, then definitely check out The Joker Character Study, our new re-watch series for the fall where we review all of the major Jokers in cinematic history. On next week’s installment, we’ll be dissecting the many iterations of Mark Hamill’s voice acting performance of the Clown Prince of Crime. So don’t miss that. And if you’re enjoying our show, do please leave us 5 stars on Apple Podcasts. Click on our shows, scroll down a few seconds, and then you’ll be able to rate us. However you feel, we want to know. How did you like the movie? And were our tirades justified? Or did we miss something? We’re @MMandOscar on Twitter, and we are on Instagram, Facebook, Reddit, and Gmail. We have a new Movie Event review format, & Good Boys is a fun way to debut it. This was a funny ass movie with a surprising amount of heart. If our you could say the same thing about our podcast at some point, we’ll have done our job. Here’s hoping. Explaining the New “Movie Event” Format - 1:20 THE GOOD BOYS AWARDS SHOW!: Preliminary Awards - 4:16 Non-spoiler Performance Awards - 14:40 Secret Sauce Award - 18:33 Is This a “Movie Event?” - 19:49 SPOILER WARNING DANCE BREAK - 20:32 SPOILER AWARDS: Carryover Awards - 21:48 Highlights/Bests Awards - 23:29 Lowlights Awards - 30:45 The More Bizarre Awards - 34:09 Final Thoughts/Final Grades - 38:28 Your Homework/PLEASE LEAVE US 5*’S - 40:51 What’s Next From MMO/Words of Wisdom - 41:45 Obviously, as an Oscar themed podcast, when we review a movie, it usually has awards potential or an awards connection of some kind. But we also love to review great films PERIOD, and those come in all shapes, sizes, & marketing campaigns. Mike & I love to find the next cult classic or the next pleasant surprise that won’t get the awards attention they deserve. So when we feel compelled to review a film that’s not gonna contend for an Oscar or be a part of one of our Oscar related re-watch series, we proudly call that a movie event. But how do we somehow stay on brand while reviewing “another” kind of film, a non-awards contender? Welp, we fixed all that with this new format because we turned our movie event episodes into mock awards shows. This is something we’ve done a half dozen times - usually to culminate one of our re-watch series & always to complete each year of movie watching with our Mike, Mike & Oscars. So it’s hopefully something in our wheelhouse. But in any case, it’s a whole lot of fun to prepare & record, and we hope you like it. This is our fourth movie event on the year. We’ve done a deep dive into Midsommar, added to our Conjuring Universe series with a review of Annabelle Comes Home, and of course, we did a review of Spider-Man: Far From Home to stay on pace with our complete coverage of the MCU. There’s also 9 films & 12 episodes (with 3 two parters) in our 2019/20 Oscar Sprint Profiles playlist. The Farewell is our most recent entry into our OSP’s. So we’ve now covered 13 films in 2019 with many more to come. In fact, we’ll be reviewing Ready Or Not next week. Do let us know what you think of Good Boys. How does it rank with other films in this genre like Booksmart, Superbad & Ferris Bueller’s Day Off? Give us your takes. We’re @MMandOscar on Twitter, and we are on Instagram, Facebook, Reddit, and Gmail. Presenting site-specific dance in the bustling financial, commercial and historic environment of downtown Manhattan is not without risk but can yield considerable excitement and rewards. Producer-curator Nolini Barretto and the artists she selects for her annual Sitelines series bring imagination and vision to this challenge and opportunity. In summer 2007, I spoke with Nolini about past productions and current highlights of this well-regarded festival, a project of the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council (http://www.lmcc.net/). GUEST BIO Nolini Barretto has long been part of the New York arts community. She worked for the Martha Graham School of Contemporary Dance for thirteen years, the last few years as Administrative Director of the school. She was a founding Director of the Emergency Fund for Student Dancers and continues to serve on its Board and the advisory Board of Buglisi Dance Company. She was the Director of Marketing for Dance Theater Workshop in Chelsea, helping it transition into its new building, managing its rebranding efforts and launching its Inaugural season. At DTW she received the National Arts Marketing Project's Advanced Audience Development Training. Nolini was originally a classical dancer in India and received a Masters degree in Arts Administration from Teachers College, Columbia University. In 2005 CEC Artslink sent her to lecture on Public Art in St. Petersburg, Russia and Novosibirsk, Siberia. Nolini began working at the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council in 2003, where she founded the site-specific performance series, Sitelines, which she continues to curate and produce. She is in her first year as a member of the Bessies (New York Dance and Performance) Awards committee.
