Andrew Lockington is a film and television composer who composed the scores for many films including blockbuster hits City of Ember, Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters, Sandreas, and Rampage, as well as hit television shows like Mayor of Kingstown, Special Ops: Lioness, and his latest Landman, starring Billy Bob Thornton. He also created the opening theme for Amazon Prime's Monday Night Hockey. Andrew's work is known for its creativity and attention to detail. We spoke about some of those techniques like how he recorded in a prison for Mayor of Kingstown and used its gates, walls, bars as musical instruments. Andrew explains how this kind of extra effort can help us bring out the emotional impact in our work. Listen on Apple, Spotify, YouTube Takeaways: Andrew's recent projects showcase a diverse range of musical styles. The line between film and TV music is increasingly blurred. Creating sound palettes involves collaboration and experimentation. Embracing imperfections can lead to more authentic music. Recording in unique locations can enhance the emotional impact of a score. Music should reflect the humanity of characters, even in villains. The environment where music is recorded influences its sound and feel. Collaboration with trusted partners can uncover hidden musical gems. Storytelling through music can bridge gaps between characters and viewers. The stories behind music can enhance the emotional experience. Creating music should focus on conveying emotion rather than technical perfection. Imperfections in music can add character and authenticity. Accidental discoveries in music production can lead to unique sounds. Simplicity in recording can yield powerful results. The creative process is often unpredictable and requires openness to change. Music can evoke feelings that are difficult to quantify or replicate. Trusting one's instincts in music production can lead to profound outcomes. PARTY PLEASER: Shirleon joins Melvin in summarizing Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters, the forgotten sequel to Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief. Mythical monsters abound in this YA-flick, and the two have a fun time chattin' what works and what doesn't in this swan-song of the Percy Jackson theatrical film series. Topics:(PATREON EXCLUSIVE) 22-minutes playing a Disney Trivia Game that has some pretty dang difficult questions. Can you guess more correctly than Shirleon? (PATREON EXCLUSIVE)The first 10-minutes of the film are expediently-well paced, which for Melvin was a good sign. The "Fantasy Racism" from Annabeth to the cyclops Tyson gets to be a bit too much. It's very one-note.When the Three Fates Taxi scene took place, despite evoking Harry Potter 3, Melvin thought to himself, "Oh, I think I'm going to like this movie.".Percy's character arc is simple, and not all that explicit, but it's very much about the confusion between a found-family and a born-family, as well as concepts of faith.Tyson's cyclops CGI is off-putting, which is made worse when we see a cyclops in a flashback and it looks awesome.Jake Abel plays Luke as this character who likes being the irritating antagonist but is also really, really chill.Rewriting scenes, because that's what you do on a podcast. There's a mutuality and wanting more cost or risk within the Percy Jackson films, but that will never happen because there will never be a third film.Recommendations:One Perfect Couple by Ruth Ware (2024)Shesmadeofwords PodcastLake Mungo (2008)MAILBAG: Send questions with your first name and we'll answer them in future episodes! YVETTE NICOLE BROWN BIO Yvette landed her first television role - - a two-episode gig playing Toni Childs' sister "Sherri" on GIRLFRIENDS - - by chance. Casting director Robi Reed called her in to audition from a post card submission. Yvette had no credits and no agent. That stroke of serendipity at the beginning of her career, taught Yvette that you never know how God is going to move in your life and career. Booking a series regular role two months later, on the first pilot she auditioned for further proved the point. That show, ABC's THE BIG HOUSE -- which starred Kevin Hart, only lasted a few episodes; but that experience proved to be a blessing as well. Through it, Yvette learned the transient nature of the business and to always "travel light".Yvette has since appeared (and often recurred) on shows as varied as ENTOURAGE, PSYCH, CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM, HOT IN CLEVELAND, MELISSA & JOEY, THE OFFICE, THE SOUL MAN, THAT'S SO RAVEN, HALF & HALF, SLEEPER CELL, HOUSE, TWO AND A HALF MEN, THAT 70'S SHOW and BOSTON LEGAL - - where she got to perform "Big, Blonde & Beautiful" from Hairspray. It was a bit of a homecoming because Yvette is no stranger to singing. She was managed by Michael Bivins (of New Edition and BBD) and signed to Motown Records when she was just a teen.Younger viewers may know Yvette from her recurring role on Nickelodeon's DRAKE & JOSH, where she played movie theater manager, Helen Ophelia Dubois. Landing that role was another serendipitous experience. The role of Helen was to be a one-time role; one that Yvette auditioned for while on hiatus from THE BIG HOUSE. That one-time role turned into four years of employment and introduced Yvette and her silliness to the best group of fans in the world...kids! The cast of DRAKE & JOSH reunited in 2008 for the holiday movie, "Merry Christmas: Drake & Josh," a film that broke Nickelodeon viewership records when it was seen by over 8 million viewers the night it debuted. It has since gone on to become an annual holiday favorite.Yvette has also had a successful career in commercials. She's appeared in over 40 national spots. You may have seen her in ads for BIG LOTS, PINE SOL, CITIBANK, FIBER ONE YOGURT, DAIRY QUEEN, HAMBURGER HELPER, ARROWHEAD WATER, HOME DEPOT, COMCAST, LG and DiGIORNO'S PIZZA to name a few. Yvette was also immortalized in puppet form as "Mrs. Lewis, from downstairs" in a series of NIKE spots alongside puppet versions of Kobe Bryant and LeBron James. She is also making a name for herself in the voiceover world. She can currently be heard as "Luna" on Disney's ELENA OF AVALOR, "Principal Waller" on DC's SUPERHERO GIRLS and the dual role of "Portia" and "Zenith" on Crackle's SUPERMANSION where she works alongside Bryan Cranston and Keegan Michael Key. She also voiced the character "Cookie" for three seasons as one of the HUB Network's POUND PUPPIES. Listen closely and you can also hear Yvette on WABBIT, FAMILY GUY, PUPPY DOG PALS, THE REGULAR SHOW and DOC McSTUFFINS just to name a few and recently made her feature animated debut voicing "Ladybug" in the film "Yellowbird"Most recently, Yvette has made the rounds of numerous game shows and talk shows including THE LATE SHOW WITH STEPHEN COLBERT, THE CHEW, THE VIEW, THE REAL, HOLLYWOOD GAME NIGHT, TO TELL THE TRUTH, CELEBRITY FAMILY FEUD, PYRAMID, MATCH GAME, CELEB NAME GAME and her absolute favorite, THE TALKING DEAD.In addition to her commercial and television work--most recently as a series regular on CBS' THE ODD COUPLE, Yvette also has a burgeoning film career. She made her film debut in the romantic comedy, "Little Black Book," working alongside Brittany Murphy and Oscar winners, Holly Hunter and Kathy Bates. Her next film, Michael Bay's futuristic thriller, "The Island" put her on the set with Ewan McGregor and Scarlett Johansson. Supporting roles in other films including "Dreamgirls" and "The Kid and I," - - where she first met and worked with one of her childhood heroes, Henry Winkler - - soon followed. She was in the box office hit, "Tropic Thunder" (directed by Ben Stiller) where she worked with Matthew McConaughey; as well as the family film, "Meet Dave" where she realized a childhood dream by sharing the screen with Eddie Murphy.Other film roles include the family film, "Hotel for Dogs" starring Emma Roberts and Don Cheadle, the romantic comedy, "The Ugly Truth" starring Katherine Heigl and Gerard Butler, the indie hit, "(500) Days of Summer" starring Zooey Deschanel and Joseph Gordon-Levitt; and the action thriller, "Repo Men" where she shared the screen with Jude Law and Oscar winner, Forest Whitaker. Most recently, those with a keen eye, could see Yvette peeking thru loads of prosthetic makeup as one of the "three fates" in the Percy Jackson sequel, "Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters".Yvette also appeared in the hit BET mini-series THE NEW EDITION STORY and hosted SyFy's game show, COSPLAY MELEE, Yvette also co-starred in the recent ABC sitcom THE MAYOR and starred as Shirley Bennett for five seasons on the NBC hit comedy series COMMUNITY.Yvette currently resides in L.A. The Percy Jackson and the Olympians book series is a five book publication in a collection of multiple series called the Half Blood Chronicles wrttien by American author Rick Riordan. The first book Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief was first released in 2005 and then was adapted to film by twenty century fox in 2010. This movie and its sequel Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters did not hold true to the books as is normally the case when you have book franchises adapted to film. Welcome back to The Community Library! This week, Harry and I are back to talk about the film Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters (2013), which is an adaptation of the book we discussed last week: Percy Jackson and the Sea of Monsters by Rick Riordan. This is the second book in the Percy Jackson series – you can listen to our discussion of the first book here and the second book here, and our episode on the first movie adaptation here. In this episode, Harry and I talk about the VFX in the action sequences, how Annabeth is now inexplicably blonde, and we also mourn the fact that Pierce Brosnan does not reprise his role as Chiron. Please follow Harry on Instagram: @harrry.l – it's his life's ambition to become Instagram famous and that's the only reason he does the podcast with me. Canadian composer, Andrew Lockington, has composed original scores for feature films such as Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters, Journey to the Center of the Earth and Journey to the Mysterious Island. Additionally, he has scored “City of Ember,” “The Space Between Us” and “Rampage” which he discussed on The Annotator episode 34. One of his most recent projects has been scoring the original television series FRONTIER.FRONTIER is a Canadian historical period drama television series co-created by Brad Peyton, Rob Blackie, and Peter Blackie. The series chronicles the North American fur trade in late 1700s Canada, and follows Declan Harp (Jason Momoa), a part-Irish, part-Cree outlaw who is campaigning to breach the Hudson's Bay Company's monopoly on the fur trade in Canada, which has become corrupt and engages in illegal activities to enrich itself. In this episode, Andrew Lockington breaks down his main title, several key musical pieces from the series and the thematic development over the course of Frontier. He reveals how he chose to specifically and delicately handle the numerous cultural and historical elements of the score; employing them to produce a more modern-contemporary score than one might have anticipated. In contrast, Lockington also talks about how he found spots in the series for larger, orchestral moments.ANNOTATED TRACKS / SEGMENTS02:18 - Main Titles03:19 - Selection 204:35 - Selection 308:15 - Selection 412:25 - Selection 514:15 - Selection 616:27 - Selection 7SOUNDTRACKThe original soundtrack for FRONTIER was released by Lakeshore Records on January 25, 2019 and is available from Amazon.com and itunes. OBS: Denne episode er EXPLICIT. 2013 is going to be a great year for actor Derek Mears. He will be starring in “Hansel and Gretel Witch Hunters”, “Gangster Squad”, and “Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters”. Plus he has played the role of Jason Voorhees in “Friday the 13th” in 2009 and the classic predator in “Predators” in 2010. Derek is a big comic book geek and says he has been blessed with the roles he has played so far in his career. I had the great pleasure to talk to a fellow fanboy about his upcoming roles, comic books, stunt work, and much more.
