Yeah. Winds overnight kept the air mixed up and the temps left me no excuses this morning. I got out early and spent a lot of time nerding out over fountain pens and Railroad Tycoon 3.
With the release of the re-mastered Mass Effect: Legendary Edition, GamerDude got to thinking about his favorite games and game genres over the years. He talks about how he first loved simulation games, like Sid Meier's Railroad Tycoon, and Ports of Call, and the original Sim City. He talks about how much fun he had planning railroads, and shipping cargo, and designing cities back when these type of simulation games were all the rage. He also talks about how his tastes evolved over the years, and how he came to love what he calls "story games." They could be RPG games, or action games, or action adventure games; the "story game," for GamerDude, has a good hero, a good story, and makes you want to keep playing. He talks about how much he enjoyed the Uncharted series, and how good a character Nathan Drake is. He talks about Red Dead Redemption (both 1 and 2), and how the open world, the moral choices in dialogue options, and the replayability, make those games so appealing, and he discusses how John Marston and Arthur Morgan are two of the best characters in gaming of all time. He also talks about how much he enjoys the Mass Effect trilogy, and why Commander Shepard is such a great character. He talks about what makes Mass Effect unique as story game, and so replayable. GamerDude also talks about his time with World of Warcraft, and how he spent literally years playing almost nothing but that. He talks about how he enjoyed it, but how he realized you do get tired of playing a game after a while, and why replayability is an important factor in making a good game.
Wir besprechen das Spiel "Railroad Tycoon".

Planes, trains, and automobiles! And boats. Oh, and hovercrafts and lorries. And canal boats? Is that right? Apparently it is! What? No automobiles? Are you serious? But we've already said that they're in it. What a joke. Let's try this again: All the transport solutions you could possibly want (except cars), squeezed into an enjoyable management simulation. Start off with just a unicycle and a wicker basket, delivering bread for your local baker, and work your way up to become the sinister, all-pervading transport conglomeration we all wish we could be. That's what this game is!As is tradition, Chris and Ashley amble their way through an hour of conversation that is at once rambling and incisive. Listen in this week for some deep cuts on the dark predilections of The Sims players in the olden days, lots of Rollercoaster Tycoon-based chat, why Chris should have been playing Railroad Tycoon instead of this, and precisely how tall the fence behind Ashley's childhood home was! Exciting, we know, and that's just a vertical slice of all the goodness in this episode! If you want to give Transport Tycoon a bash, head on over to OpenTTD and fill your boots.Apologies for Ashley's grump at the beginning. He says it's hard to deal with Chris' unrelenting upbeat positivity in a world rapidly falling into decay. In this special episode of The Long View, I'm thrilled to be joined by none other than Ryan Sturm as we discuss the classic game, Age of Steam. Why does Ryan love this game so much? Is the best of the Steam, Age of Steam, and Railroad Tycoon family? What separates it from the pack, and why has it inspired so many expansions and spin offs? Find out the answer to these questions and more in this episode of The Long View. As a bonus, Tom Vasel stops by to tell us his thoughts about Age of Steam in a musical tribute, and I review the new Stronghold Games title of Core Worlds: Revolution. What does this expansion have to offer for fans of the Core Worlds universe? Is is a vital addition, or just bloat? Find out in the review which can be found at the 1:35:00 mark of the episode. I also review the new title from NSKN games, Progress: Evolution of Technology. Is this a civ light game for everyone, or a near miss? Find out in the review which can be found at the 1:57:00 mark of the episode. Thanks, as always, to The Dice Tower! The Long View is a proud member of The Dice Tower Network. Thanks to them for their support! The Long View is also generously sponsored by www.gamesurplus.com, home of great games, at great prices. Thanks to them for their continued support of the show. Troy and Bruce team up to discuss the track record of railroad games through strategy history, from 1830 through Railroad Tycoon and Rails Across America and beyond. How do these games distinguish themselves from each other? What is the attraction? Does Ticket to Ride count?
Dirk (the solo host for this week) sits down with acclaimed game designer Martin Wallace of Tree Frog Games. Martin’s star-studded resume includes Railroad Tycoon, A Few Acres of Snow, Waterloo, and the Discworld licensed games.
Jon and Dirk are guest-free this week and provide an update on what they’ve been working on and playing. On the Kickstarter front, ‘At the Gates’ has wrapped up and ‘War Stories’ will soon be doing the same. A recent playtest of ‘Tomorrow’ and Jon’s thoughts on a recent version of the game. They also discuss some of the games played at ‘Abnercon’, including ‘The World Cup Game’, ‘Railroad Tycoon’ and ‘Mare Nostrum’.
The time has come for episode 12! This time around, we look into our first game from the king of simulation, Sid Meier's Railroad Tycoon. Before we dive into the business simulation pool, some news: Command & Conquer: Generals 2 will apparently not be a traditional retail boxed game. Initially, it will be released as a free to play multiplayer online game with a single player campaign to follow. In Kickstarter news, the creator of the Broken Sword series has started a campaign with the goal of funding a new game in the Broken Sword series. There's still quite a bit of time left so check it out! Finally, Chris Pope of the Guys from Andromeda podcast recently interviewed Lori and Corey Cole, creators of the original Quest for Glory series. In the great audio interview they discuss memories of working at Sierra and also discuss their new project, The School for Heroes. We then get on to the main topic, the very deep, detailed and challenging 1990 business simulation game, Railroad Tycoon. As usual we talk genre, gameplay, dev story and the rest. Download Railroad Tycoon Deluxe for free Get Railroad Tycoon 2 and 3 on Steam. Next time, we join the clans with Mechwarrior! Hope to see you then!
This time around, we're heading back to the adventure genre with a great LucasArts game from 1990, Loom. First though, some news: Shortly after the last show, strange rumours started popping up about a new Rise of the Triad game by Apogee software. Turns out they are true! Some more info about the new X-COM: Enemy Unknown game has come out. We're talking competitive multiplayer and a release date! You can also pre-order at their site. Finally, some sad news: 3D modelling pioneer Paul Steed, who worked on games like Strike Commander and Quake, passed away suddenly this week. After the news we read a few listener emails covering a few topics. Business aside, I then start to delve into the fantastic and wonderful world of Loom. As usual we cover all the aspects of story, gameplay, development and more relating to this truly unique adventure game from Lucasfilm Games. If you want to give Loom a go, it can be purchased on Steam. Next week, we put on our conductor's hat when we look at yet another game from 1990, Sid Meier's Railroad Tycoon.
In this classic episode, originally posted- January 6, 2006, Joe Steadman and I give a joint review of Railroad Tycoon, listen to an audio review by Walt O'Hara, and get schooled in German pronunciation. We also talk about our top ten game designers.

Before we head off to look at some games that are slightly more site appropriate, we wanted to cover the expansion to the game we first covered. Rails of Europe is an expansion of Railroad Tycoon, but includes a much tighter gameplay experience for fewer players. Let’s have a look. Download:Â iPod/Low Bandwidth Format | […]
