My guest today is the American designer of some of the finest strategy video games yet made. After graduating from the University of Oklahoma with a degree in Computer Science in 2000, he accepted a job to become a business consultant. Before he arrived for work, however, he saw an advertisement for position at Fireaxis, the development studio founded by the legendary designer, Sid Meier, which he successfully applied to.Having worked as a programmer on Civilization III and IV, in 2012 he relaunched the cult classic strategy series X-COM, a chess-like game in which players direct a squad of troops in skirmishes against alien invaders. More recently he steered the creation of Marvel's Midnight Suns, one of the best games of 2022, that carried the lessons learned in X-Com into Marvel universe.Earlier this year he announced his departure from Fireaxis, the company where he worked for more than 20 years. On this episode of My Perfect Console he discusses, for the first time, his future plans. “My brain is on fire with a new dream,” he said. “Time to go chase it.” Thank you for listening to My Perfect Console. Firaxis Games has announced the development of a new Civilization game, which may be called Civilization VII. The upcoming game will be the first new mainline entry in the series since Civilization VI was released in 2016. Heather Hazen, the incoming studio head at Firaxis, said in a press release, “I'm thrilled to have this opportunity to carry on the studio's storied legacy, beginning with the announcement that Firaxis is in development on the next iteration of the legendary Civilization franchise. I'm lucky to be working with some of the best developers in our industry, and we have plans to take the Civilization franchise to exciting new heights for our millions of players around the world.” Although the game's release date is unclear, it is exciting news for fans of the series. Civilization games are turn-based strategy games where players lead a civilization from the Stone Age to the Modern Era, developing technologies, exploring the world, and engaging in diplomacy and warfare with other civilizations. Firaxis has a reputation for releasing high-quality strategy games, and the Civilization series is one of its most successful franchises. The games have sold over 50 million copies worldwide, and Civilization VI has received numerous awards and critical acclaim. While Ed Beach will continue to serve as creative director on the new Civilization, the company has also announced some key staffing changes. Longtime studio head Steve Martin and creative director Jake Solomon are leaving the company. It is unclear what impact this will have on the development of the game. It will be interesting to see what new features and improvements the new Civilization game will bring to the series. Civilization VI introduced new mechanics like unstacked cities, districts, and an updated research tree. The game was also praised for its graphics, music, and modding support. It's unclear what the new game will be called, what new features it will introduce, and when it will be released. However, the news that a new Civilization game is in development is exciting for fans of the series. It's a testament to the enduring appeal of the franchise that a new game is still highly anticipated even six years after the release of the last mainline entry. Source: The Verge

Comedian Jake Solomon might have not worn real pants until his senior year of high school (we're as surprised as you are), but that doesn't mean he hasn't seen some stuff. Between getting rated by hotness and dodging bullets in the retail trenches, Jake's barely made it out alive. Jake also makes it perfectly clear how picking up frozen dog turds is actually a pretty decent gig in his hometown of Cleveland, OH. Also, Nick and Chase argue about why Jake can't be an astronaut.-2 Stars on Yelp: The Divorced Dad Restaurant w/ Caitlin PeluffoJanuary 13, 2020Comedian Caitlin Peluffo (Colbert) would probably make a great caddie, but she makes an even better riot. From running down women in parking lots to working for guys with “divorced dad energy”, Caitlin walks Nick and Chase through the trials and tribulations of her day job hellscape.
