Struggling to make learning feel relevant and real for your students? What if shifting from classroom-based instruction to community-connected learning could spark deeper engagement—without adding to your workload? In this episode, I sit down with Lori, an expert in community-based STEM learning, to explore how shifting learning from the classroom to museums, libraries, and local spaces creates powerful, real-world experiences- especially in STEM. Lori shares practical strategies to bring your community into the classroom—and how these partnerships can transform your students into scientists, historians, and creators, while making your role as a teacher easier, not harder. She describes a moment when a young girl, after leading her own experiment in a museum, said, “I was the scientist... not my teacher.” We learn: How shifting learning from the classroom to community spaces makes projects instantly more relevant Why letting students “be the expert” drives deeper learning and ownership How collaborating with museums and libraries simplifies planning instead of complicating it How virtual field trips can extend your classroom to the world—on any budget Tune in to learn more about these shifts in practice and how to apply them in your setting. The Work of a Recreational Therapist: A Conversation with Candace Rebuck Brain injuries are invisible, silent and often lifelong. Our guest today on the Brain Injury Connector is Candace Rebuck, a Recreational Therapist. Candace focuses on helping individuals transition back to their previous lifestyle after a brain injury and regain the ability to participate in the things they love doing. Recreational Therapy is a process that involves activity-based interventions to address the specific needs of individuals suffering from injury or disability. Recreational Therapy combines aspects of Physical therapy, Occupational therapy and Speech therapy, utilizing balance, fine motor skills, mental and cognitive exercises, and engaging patients in the things they are most passionate about. One of the core focuses of Recreational Therapy is having fun! Masking the hard work of recovery in leisure and recreational activities, Cadence says, “If you're having a good time with it, you're going to do more!” Candace also works closely with the patients entire recovery team - physicians, nursing and therapy staff, rehab aids, neuropsychologist, and most importantly, the individuals family members. Providing knowledge, resources, and tools to the family as the patient recovers, helps to make sure they're on board and understand the process. Candace says as a Recreational Therapist, it's important to leave your outside world outside, being totally available to help people cope with their new reality. Candace is a jack of all trades when it comes to therapy, but she's most proud of the work she does as a certified instructor in Non Violent Crisis Prevention and her specialty certifications in both Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and Brain Injury. She provided services to patients of all ages before leaving the profession to become a full-time mom. We discuss the importance of self-care and Shaunna reveals how her background in recreational therapy has helped with the various relationships in her life, including with her three children. Benefits of Recreational TherapyDiscover what's missing. Where's the need? What in my self-care am I lacking? Rec therapy could be right for you if (like one of Shaunna's clients) “you've been so busy that you don't know what your likes and interests are anymore”. Greater autonomy. And control of your life. Develop the skills to be able to do it on your own. Learn to plan, set and reach your goals. Better quality of life. Essentially this is what it's all about. Activity-based learning to enhance your quality of life. Create Time for YourselfSelf-care needs to be an essential part of all of our lives. So, now is the time to figure out: How much time do you need for self-care? How can you make sure it happens? Everyone's different. So take a few minutes to imagine what your ideal self-care routine would look like. Do you need 30 minutes every day? Do you need more? Do you need less? How much time do you need? Schedule that time (daily, weekly) Plan what you'll do during that time Make it happen! Making yourself a self-care schedule is important. “Now this time is blocked out. Nothing else can take this time”. And Shaunna has found that if she doesn't plan what she's going to do during her “me time”, it no longer really fulfils her self-care needs. If she doesn't plan anything fun for herself, she might just get some of her to-do lists done and it's no longer as therapeutic. ✨ Full show notes for this episode: https://alsoinpink.com/13-shaunna-nordstrom/ (visit our official site) And, wherever you get your podcasts: https://ratethispodcast.com/alsoinpink (Rate & Review ALSO in PINK) Thank you for your support!

Sandy Nolting, Physical Therapist and Certified Yoga Therapist, joins the podcast to discuss the foundational principles of yoga. In this first podcast about yoga, Sandy will explain the basic principles of yoga to help you get started, which includes: intro to breathing and basic movement patterns and posture. This episode is perfect for you if you’re new to yoga or looking for a deeper understanding of the core principles! Show Notes Dr. Luke Gordon interviews his first live guest since the beginning of COVID to discuss all things Yoga. Here are the major topics for this episode:  Topic 1: Sandy explains her path to finding yoga. After starting as a Recreational Therapist and later becoming a Physical Therapist, Sandy was introduced to yoga in 2003. Since that time, she’s dedicated thousands of hours to practicing and teaching yoga.  Topic 2: What are the primary benefits of yoga (basic overview)? Sandy explains the myriad of health benefits of yoga, which includes things like: increased flexibility, increased strength, stress reduction, regulation of autonomic nervous system, chronic pain and inflammation. Topic 3: What are the foundational principles of yoga? Sandy explains the “8 Limbs of Yoga” and how the movements are only a small portion of the actual benefit of yoga. She also explains the foundational principles of breath, posture and movement. Topic 4: What are some mistakes to avoid with yoga (for beginners and ongoing students)? Sandy explains how you don’t have to be flexible to start yoga and how yoga is a process and a practice. Comparing yourself to others is a common mistake to avoid, as is having high expectations for your physical abilities. Remember, yoga isn’t just about movement! Topic 5: For people brand new to yoga, where should they start? Currently, the best place to start for people who want to work with Sandy is to inquire about our online Zoom classes. If you’d like access to free yoga classes, you can email Luke directly at Luke@GordonPhysicalTherapy.com. On today's episode I interview, Brent D. Wolfe, PhD, CTRS, FDRT, Professor, Recreational Therapy, Executive Director for the American Therapeutic Recreation Association (ATRA). He's also a father and LOVES nature. He and I connected because I reached out to ATRA sharing about my podcast and how I want to empower people globally to move towards their own happiness and share the power of Rec Therapy. ATRA forwarded my email to Dr. Wolfe and we recorded the episode. Rec Therapy was HUGE at the psych hospital where I worked where I developed the program Move Happy. It technically would be under the Rec Therapy umbrella (positive psychology journaling, group discussion and workouts with minimal equipment in nature as often as possible) as it is in perfect alignment with ATRA's mission. I wanted my listeners to hear more about Rec Therapy because it is SO powerful. If you have the freedom to get in nature and explore the sounds, smells and authenticity that is nature, do so often. Please leave a thank you review for Dr. Wolfe and connect with him at Georgia Southern University if you'd like to learn more or attend the school he educates at (his email is: brentwolfe@georgiasouthern.edu).

What do you think of when you think of the word therapy? Therapist? Most of us think of traditional psychotherapy, talking through your life and problems with someone. Using your head to fix your head. However, many people and cultures throughout history have placed an equal, if not greater, focus on the body as a means to mental health. Surrounding yourself with nature, exercising, playing, these are all things that can have a massive impact on your mental state. In fact, it’s so important that an entire school of therapy is devoted to it. Today’s guest, Andrew Hermansen, will teach us all about it.

Ryan Lee didn’t fall into an entrepreneurial business right away. He first worked as a Recreational Therapist, Gym Teacher in public schools, and a personal trainer. You’ll hear a great deal of enthusiasm and practical insights from Ryan, so be sure you take the time to listen. But it’s not all been a bed of roses for Ryan Lee. Business Partnerships can be painful and on this episode Ryan Lee ( I consider one of my early internet mentors)  and founder of Freedym.com (the Netflix for lifestyle entrepreneurship) shares about one of his. Ryan is a  former Recreational Therapist, Gym Teacher and Personal Trainer.  In 1999 he started an online fitness business while living in his parents basement and grew it into an empire that did  7-figures per month. More importantly many of the people he has mentored have gone on to do big things. Here’s a glimpse of what you’ll learn: [0:25] Jeremy’s introduction of Ryan Lee of Freedym.com [1:19] Ryan’s lowest point business wise. [3:53] One of Ryan’s proudest business moments. [7:32] What went through Ryan’s head when he made 7 figures in one month. [13:28] The best things that came out of a $25 mastermind group. [14:00] Where you can find Ryan. [14:36] Ideas Ryan wants to give away that he’ll never work on. In this episode… There is a stigma attached to business partnerships. Many people have had difficult or painful experiences trying to make a partnership work. On this episode Ryan Lee tells the story of a partnership he entered into that was painful on a number of levels - but he doesn’t blame the partnership itself. Instead he blames himself for stepping outside his primary areas of strength. If you’re going to entertain the idea of a partnership you need to make sure that the thing you’re doing is well within your core competencies. That’s the lesson Ryan Lee learned as he was trying to make a fitness product into the next big thing. In the end he felt that he let everyone down because he overextended himself into areas that weren’t his strengths. Even though he’s incredibly successful, Ryan Lee is a pretty low key, no nonsense guy. On this episode he talks about what it was like to bring in 7 figures in one month, why he’d never spend $25,000 on a mastermind group, and why he has gotten incredible value from a $25 mastermind group and has become good friends with all of the participants in the group. Ryan’s got a cool story so be sure you take some time to listen. Ryan Lee believes that if you’re going to do something you should enjoy it. He made that statement during this conversation on Inspired Insider when he was talking about a company he built that makes up to 7 figures per month - and yet he’s going to step out of it. He doesn’t feel like it’s the best fit for who he is and who he wants to be. You can hear Ryan’s story about that decision on this episode. Over the past eight years of financial turmoil, more Americans from all different backgrounds have suffered from shocks to their wages and benefits.    Some people are still out of work.  In addition, home values and personal saving have also taken a hit.  Another disruption to many Americans, something many people don’t consider, has come in the form of disabilities.  According to the U.S. Census Bureau, almost 57 million people had a disability in 2010.  And on top of all that we know that half of all marriages in America end in divorce.   What is my point in stating all these facts?  Clearly in life the best laid plans of mice and men often go awry.  So why do we have the hubris to think that we don’t need a plan?  No plan B, no contingency.   In fact, a recent Bankrate.com survey found that roughly 3 out of every 4 Americans are living paycheck-to-paycheck, with little to no emergency savings.  Less than 1 in 4 Americans have enough money in their savings account to cover at least six months of expenses (which is the recommended amount to cover unexpected life events) and  half of those surveyed have less than a three-month cushion.  Most shocking is that 27% have no savings at all. Perhaps we all subscribe to the John Lennon quote that “Life is what happens when you’re busy making other plans.” Maybe you think that you can plan and set goals, but you still run into this unpredictable thing called, “life.”  This is true, but still should you just leave it all to chance, simply letting life happen to you? On this show we introduce a guest who knows all too well what it feels like to experience disruption or what economists like to call, shocks to her life.  She has experienced career derailment, marriage dissolution and even disability.  She has every reason to check out but that is not what she has done.  Instead, she writes about her disability, finding an audience with her personal blog and syndicated column.  Susan Reagan is a survivor.  She has made lemonade out of lemons and she has graciously agreed to share her journey with us.  Thank you from all of us Susan for coming on Financially Empowering Women! About Susan Susan Reagan is currently employed as a staff writer for two marketing companies. She writes about a variety of topics from Lean Six Sigma to ancillary healthcare services and everything in between. The majority of her career has been spent in healthcare operations management and healthcare marketing.  She began as a Recreational Therapist, which led to a preceptorship to earn her administrator’s license and then to regional marketing leadership. Susan has a B.S. in Business Management and Marketing and a B.A. in Therapeutic Recreation, and a collateral certificate in Gerontology. Susan earned an MBA in Healthcare Administration from Moravian College.  She serves on the board of directors for a non-profit agency that serves people with disabilities and chairs their grant committee. Susan had several life-changing events that occurred all at one time.  She lost her voice due to a muscular disorder and came to the realization that her marriage must end. Her 17-year career in healthcare ended as a result of losing her voice. During this time her father was gravely ill, as well. Susan can be reached at susan.ann.reagan@gmail.com Her personal blog http://livingwithvoiceloss.blogspot.com/ Which is syndicated on http://vocaldisorders.org/blog/ Susan is available for public speaking engagements in front of large groups and organizations. She shares her life-changing story of voice loss and her inspirational story of success.   Through this journey Susan has found new life, new purpose and new meaning in helping others.
