Have you ever had a Rock & Roll Fantasy? The Kinks did. So did Bad Company. And nobody hated Bad Company more than rock music's Stephen Sondheim. #FireElaineStritch Some Rock & Roll fantasies are quite dangerous, like the troubling, cancel-worthy ones Rick Rubin has about feet. ALLEGEDLY. But others are healthy enough to dream out loud, on, by any reasonable metric, one of America's most acclaimed podcasts. Inspired by an inspiring suggestion from longtime listener, Patreon supporter, and singer/songwriter, Montreal's own Max "Como" Comeau (which translates loosely in ‘Murican to "Max, how"?), Tony and T.J. dare to dream: what would have a Beatles reunion concert been like in the late 1970's? Would George wear his silly stache from his self titled LP? Would Paul arrive on a laconic boat from London Town? Would John bake bread as Yoko verbally assaults Chuck Berry? And would Ringo be sober enough to zug-zug his way from Monte Carlo to the venue? These questions will NOT be answered in this fairly insane excursion in to fantasyland - you'll thank us for the two drink minimum, folks - but don't fret; neither will these:

We've already covered a couple of Journey albums. Episode 250 profiled "Infinity," the introduction of Steve Perry to the group. And episode 26 delved into arguably the high water mark for Journey, the album "Escape." Here we take a look at the band as they are in their transition into one of the world's biggest rock bands. The appropriately-titled album Evolution is Journey's fifth studio album. Here we find Steve Perry settling in as front man while still sharing lead vocal duties with keybaordist Gregg Rolie. They have also replaced drummer Aynsley Dunbar with Steve Smith, previously with Ronnie Montrose's band. The band is continuing to explore a more radio-friendly sound. The lineup for this band includes Perry, Rolie, and Dunbar, along with Neil Schon on guitar, and Ross Valory on bass.At the time, "Evolution" was the band's most successful album, and it reached number 20 on the Billboard 200 chart. It also featured their first single to enter the top 20. The album was actually released in March of 1979, but was recorded in the fall of 1978. We're featuring it in January of 1979 because - well - that's where we were able to fit it in.Brian rejoins us in todays podcast to sub for an absent Wayne, and to profile this album. Too LateA deeper cut written by Perry and Schon, this song was written about a friend from Steve Perry's hometown who was wrestling with addiction to drugs. It was a plea to get out of town and the surroundings that fed his addiction before it was too late to break the chains of addiction.Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin'The biggest hit from the album is a slow rocker with a shuffle beat. It hit number 16 on the Billboard Hot 100 in November of 1979, the group's first foray into the top 20. The song is based on a true story about a cheating woman who finds out that turnabout is fair play - and that cheating on a songwriter can result in your being memorialized in a song.City of the AngelsWhile they were known as a San Francisco band, this album track pays homage to Los Angeles. It was written by Perry, Schon and Rolie. On the album, "Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin'" immediately leads into this track, and you will occasionally hear these played together on album-oriented stations and satellite radio.Just the Same WayThis single finds Gregg Rolie taking turns with Perry on lead vocals. It was written by Rolie, Schon, and Ross Valory, making it the only song on the album not written or co-written by Steve Perry. It is an infatuation song, with a great call-and-answer in the chorus between Rolie and Perry. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:The Pink Panther Theme by Henry ManciniThe Saturday morning cartoon show with a silent protagonist, "The Pink Panther," ended its run after 10 years. STAFF PICKS:Gold by John StewartLynch's staff pick is a top 5 hit from John Stewart's album "Bombs Away Dream Babies," his first solo top 40 hit. Both Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks contributed to the album, and Nicks provides backing vocals on this song. The vocals describe the dark, cynical side of the recording industry.Planet Claire by The B-52'sRob brings us a musical interpretation of a B-rated sci-fi movie. Once the instrumental and sound-effects - with a Peter Gunn-inspired beat - give way to Fred Schneider's vocals, we find that the girl is from Planet Claire, drives a Plymouth Satellite, and "some say she's from Mars, or one of the seven stars that shine after 3:30 in the morning. Well, she isn't!"Dance the Night Away by Van Halen Bruce features the first US top 20 hit by Van Halen. This song is unusual because it is the only song on the "Van Halen II" album that originated in the studio rather than as a song the group had honed on tour for a long time. It also downplays Eddie Van Halen's guitar virtuosity and brings up the vocal harmonies. Fleetwood Mac's "Go Your Own Way" was an inspiration for this single.Rock n Roll Fantasy by Bad CompanyBrian's staff pick was written by Bad Co. front man Paul Rogers, and reflects the truth that Rock music is escapism, a fantasy to take you away from the stress of the everyday world for a bit. It was the lead single from the album "Desolation Angels." While not their highest charting single, it is their best selling single. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Main Theme from the motion picture "Alien"The disturbing soundtrack was one element of what made this sci-fi horror film so creepy. As you listen to episode 17 of Music in my Shoes, prepare to uncover the unexpected lineage of Blondie's "Hanging on the Telephone" and tap your feet to the disco-infused "Heart of Glass" that had even the rock purists grooving. We're not just dusting off old vinyl here; we're diving into the top-selling albums like Fleetwood Mac "Rumors," & AC/DC "Back in Black," and discussing how the music industry's landscape has been shaped by CD sales and the advent of streaming metrics. It's a nostalgic trip through America's musical treasure trove, filled with personal tales and revelations that tie us all to the songs we love.Strap on your boots for a walk down memory lane with classics that still echo through the decades. Terry Jacks' "Seasons in the Sun" takes a melancholic turn with its backstory of friendship and loss, while Bad Company's "Rock 'n' Roll Fantasy" plays out like a rock star's daydream. These tunes aren't just catchy—they're a snapshot of an era's soul, capturing the emotional complexity that saw them rise to chart-topping fame. It's an exploration of musical narratives that bind us, stories that resonate with the weariness and hope of the '70s.Capping off this melodic journey, I open up about the personal significance of "Oh Atlanta" and how it became a beacon during a pivotal move in 1990. Our Music in my Shoes Mailbag segment brings our listeners into the spotlight, showcasing their engagement and shared trivia from game shows to Cheap Trick. We honor Soundgarden's "Superunknown" with a nod to its 30th anniversary, stirring up memories and musical shifts that have defined our listening habits. And for the finale, we step back into the electrified air of a Billy Joel concert from '94, inviting you to relive those moments that make live music an unforgettable experience. So tune in, because episode 17 is a record you won't want to skip.

Steve Cooper talks with musician Simon Kirke. Simon is best known for being the drummer for the band Bad Company. Bad Company enjoyed great success throughout the 1970s. Their first three albums, Bad Company, Straight Shooter and Run with the Pack, reached the top five in the album charts in both the UK and the US. Many of their singles and songs, such as Bad Company, Can't Get Enough, Good Lovin' Gone Bad, Feel Like Makin' Love, Shooting Star, Ready for Love and Rock 'n' Roll Fantasy, remain staples of classic rock radio. They have sold 20 million RIAA-certified albums in the US and 40 million worldwide. Simon was also in Free has guested on a long list of recordings by other artists over the years, including albums by Wilson Pickett, Faces, Gov't Mule, Jim Capaldi and Ron Wood, among countless others and he is often found drumming live on tour with acts like Chuck Berry, Ray Charles, Bo Diddley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Eric Clapton, Keith Richards and Ringo Starr & His All-Star Band.
Episode 31 of Season 5 went out live on Rebel Rock radio on 4 August 2022. This show is as unprepared as it gets, let's see what happens. We kicked off with Bad Company and ‘Rock ‘n' Roll Fantasy, then into Dave Hause off one of my favourite albums of all time titled 'Bury Me In Philly'. The track we played was called ‘The Flinch'. From there we sped it up a bit with ‘Speed Demon' from Keel, by now I was hating what I had in the playlist and desperately looking for a way out. By request, we took in some of Australia's finest in the form of James Reyne and Cold Chisel with ‘Fall of Rome' and ‘When the War is Over' respectively. The Cold Chisel track should cause some piloerection, the first two verses sung by guitarist Ian Moss and then the sheer power of Jimmy Barnes taking over from verse three. I love the way Barnsey does this, standing back and letting someone else have a go just increases the magnificence of his voice. It's the contrast that does it, and then of course Don Walker on piano. This week's Rock Review featured Rush and the last track 'The Wreckers' cut off violently due to the time slot allocated so to make amends and also by request we listened to it in its awesome entirety. Things by now were picking up with some very special people tuned in. We checked out a band called Ignite and another called Windowpane, two relatively unknown bands making some awesome music. Next, we popped over to Germany for some Rammstein and some Accept. We checked some new stuff from Alter Bridge off their forthcoming album Pawns and Kings, the track was called 'Silver Tongue' and we also listened to 'Times Like These' off the brand new Five Finger Death Punch release Afterlife. A couple of Alices' in the form of Alice in Chains and Alice Cooper were followed by classic 80's metal from Van Halen and ACDC. We wound it down with four South African bands, starting with a request for Kobus! with Kultuurfeestent and then Jack Hammer, The Black Cat Bones, and L.A. Cobra. The Bones in particular sounded amazing with their cover of Bob Dylan's ‘I Shall be Released. We stayed mellow and wound down this very random show with some Black Stone Cherry off the Kentucky album and Kid Rock with ‘Don't Quit' off his latest album released earlier this year titled Bad Reputation. Artists featured: Bad Company, Dave Hause, Desperado, Keel, Danko Jones, James Reyne, Cold Chisel, Destruction, Thundermother, The Gaslight Anthem, Led Zeppelin, Rush, Rory Gallagher, Ignite, Windowpane, Rammstein, Accept, Alter Bridge, Five Finger Death Punch, Audioslave, Alice in Chains, Alice Cooper, Virgin Steele, ACDC, Van Halen, Candlebox, Kiss, David Bowie, Kobus!, Jack Hammer, The Black Cat Bones, L.A. Cobra, Bruce Dickinson, Black Stone Cherry, Kid Rock
Making a Scene Presents Gerry Casey's Interview with Jeff Massey of The Steepwater BandYou should already know these songs. If the old saying about talent equaling success were true, then The Steepwater Band would already be a household name, rubbing shoulders with Aerosmith, Bad Company and other like-minded travelers in our collective Rock 'n Roll Fantasy. But that's not how things always work, and this band knows it and still leans into it, smiling, with everything in them, not for brass rings and marquees, but because they must! For them, the music life is a calling and not some stupid costume one puts on to shake loose gold, fame, and groupies. In a land of caricatures, it's striking to come face-to-face with the real thing.
David Fishof is a walking example of a self-made success story. From the Catskills to Los Angeles and around the world, he has been the guy behind the scenes. He is an entertainment architect that knows how to put together not just a show, but all-out tours. He revived groups like the Monkees and the Association with sensational tours. He has represented athletes as an agent on the side of being a music promoter. He is not just there for the musicians, he is a life changer. He founded the Rock n' Roll Fantasy camp where everyday musicians get to work with and learn from their favorite musicians. We talk about his new book Shadows of a Dream then dive into the 80’s. A very entertaining conversation with a new author who I think you will love his book! A child of the 80's, SL Harby grew up playing Dungeons & Dragons and classic video games. An only child, he was bitten early by the reading bug, cutting his teeth on the masters of modern fantasy. His days were spent inside the worlds created by Howard and Lieber, Moorcock and Tolkien. A perpetual Jersey boy, SL Harby lives in northwestern New Jersey with his wife and muse, Jessica and their bad ass rescue dog, Tellulah. Rock and Roll Fantasy was one of the Kinks' biggest hits in the 70s and today we discuss what makes the song great.
For this Labor Day, the boys decided to do a Rock-n-Roll Fantasy Draft episode. They figured to make is fun and entertaining, why not bring on two of their long-time friends, Bobby Hardin and Scott Miller. Each person will pick a vocalist, drummer, bassist, keyboardist and two guitarists to form a super group. Some of the artists drafted belong to such groups as Van Halen, Dio, Black Sabbath, Triumph, Journey and more. Oh and there are several surprises. Who would you draft? In Episode 058 we take stock of the recent Phish Mexico Run, focusing on one of our favorite jams of the run, the "Carini," as well as the accompanying "Tweezer -> Ghost -> Say It To Me S.A.N.T.O.S." segment that felt like most purely fun part of the entire weekend. To do all this, we're joined by our good friend, and fellow podcaster, Matt Dwyer (@mdphunk) of The Helping Friendly Podcast. We dive deep into the experience of seeing Phish in Mexico, as Matt has been to both the 2016 & 2019 runs, before discussing the run as a whole.Songs featured in this episode are: Free: "All Right Now," The Doobie Brothers: "China Grove," The Firm: "Radioactive," Thin Lizzy: "The Boys Are Back In Town," Bad Company: "Rock & Roll Fantasy," Golden Earring: "Radar Love," ZZ Top: Gimme All Your Lovin'In addition, we discuss two new 2019 records we highly recommend: Sunwatchers: "Illegal Moves," and Bob Mould: "Sunshine Rock"- - - We're proud to be sponsored by KushCo Holdings!KushCo Holdings is a publicly traded company under the ticker KSHB and the parent to innovative cannabis industry leaders such as Kush Supply Co., Kush Energy, The Hybrid Creative, and Koleto Packaging Solutions which offer a range of services and products for the legal cannabis industry including child resistant packaging and supplies, gases and solvents, vaporizer products, and branded solutions.Founded in 2010, KushCo Holdings has now sold more than 1 billion units and regularly sells to more than 5,000 legally operated medical and adult-use dispensaries, growers, and producers across North America, South America, and Europe.
