After the North American Soccer League folded in 1984, many of the league's top American players moved to the Major Indoor Soccer League. Some, in fact, moved with their franchises, who also found a new home as part of the indoor game. One such club was the San Diego Sockers. Their star defender, Kevin Crow, had achieved All-Star status in the NASL and then became five-time Defender of the Year in the MISL. Crow joined Founding Futbol to talk about his journey through four leagues with one franchise. He sheds light on how he managed the challenges of a down era in US Soccer, talks about the differences between the indoor and outdoor game, and recounts how focused on his transition away from the game, while he was still playing. Founding Futbol is a year-long exploration of the critical moments that have led to soccer's emerging popularity in America. Extra Time is an additional weekly episode that shares reactions and reflections from the chapters, and brings additional guests into the fold. [We kick off our holiday break this week with a deep descent into the "Good Seats" archives - and an eyebrow-raising revisit of the enigmatic Continental Indoor Soccer League of the 1990s with former play-by-play broadcaster Kenn Tomasch!] Former sportscaster and fellow defunct pro sports enthusiast Kenn Tomasch joins host Tim Hanlon to dig deep into the two-season saga of the Indiana (née Indianapolis) Twisters of the Continental Indoor Soccer League – the mid-90s summertime indoor soccer circuit hatched by a collective of team and arena owners from the NBA and NHL to keep their facilities humming during their respective “off”-seasons. CISL franchises controlled by entities outside the big-league fraternity were also part of the mix (accounting for half of the eventual 18 teams during the league's five-year run from 1993-97) – including the tumultuously tenuous Twisters, who cycled through two separate ownership groups as well as a temporary spell of league receivership during its brief 21-month existence. As the radio “Voice of the Twisters,” Tomasch was there for all of it, including: A rousing home debut on June 21, 1996 at Indianapolis' Market Square Arena that saw the club drop an entertaining 7-6 overtime decision to the Washington Warthogs; Dwindling announced home-game crowds of barely 2,000+ just months later; Co-owner Rodney Goins ceding his role as president mid-season to become an active player on the Twisters roster – debuting as US pro sports' first-ever player-owner on August 23, 1996; Becoming “wards of the league” two weeks later when Goins and his co-owner brother suspend operations – and team radio broadcasts; New ownership, team name, logo, colors – and a surprising second-place regular season finish in 1997; Losing home-field playoff advantage due to a scheduling conflict, and ultimately an early exit from a potential title run; AND The abrupt folding of the venerable San Diego Sockers just days before the 1997 season that foreshadowed the CISL's demise later in the year.

Stay tuned after the game recap for a special guest appearance with Filly!

FrontRowSoccer.com's Michael Lewis returns after a two-year absence to help us dig into the news of the Major Arena Soccer League's hiring of three marquee names from pro indoor soccer's 1980s heyday - as it attempts to translate the sport's past glory into interest for a new generation of fans. The additions of Shep Messing (Chairman), Keith Tozer (Commissioner) and Episode 66 guest JP Dellacamera (President, Communications/Media) to the MASL executive suite signals a major effort to stabilize the long-wobbly league and elevate the indoor game back to the level of its legendary predecessors - like the original Major Indoor Soccer League and even the old North American Soccer League. Besides weighing in on what might happen in the months ahead, Lewis mines nearly forty years of soccer reporting to recount some of the most memorable indoor matches from his sportswriting career, including: The MISL's epic 1981 "Championship Weekend" at the St. Louis Checkerdome, where the hometown Steamers outlasted the Wichita Wings in a logic-defying 8-7 shootout semifinal, but lost a nail-biting 6-5 final to the New York Arrows two days later; 1975 NASL indoor tournament matches at Rochester's War Memorial, where goals measured only four feet high x 16 feet long; The MISL's 1981 All-Star Game - played at the World's Most Famous Arena, Madison Square Garden; A January 1985 Cosmos MISL home loss to the San Diego Sockers that portended the team's folding just two weeks later; and US National Team goalie Tony Meola's indoor debut with the New Jersey Ironmen of the one-year Xtreme Soccer League in 2008.
This week, we catch up with the only coach in the sport of indoor soccer to have held up the last two major cups: Rene Ortiz, who was the head coach of the WMF World Cup champion Team Mexico, and assistant coach for the Ron Newman Cup champion San Diego Sockers. Hear a coach's perspective on the challenges of a COVID season, and which leaders stepped up to unify the locker room!

Joel Anderson, Stefan Fatsis, and Josh Levin are joined by Ken Early of the Irish Times to talk about European soccer’s proposed Super League. They also discuss the NFL’s top quarterback prospects and they debate whether Triller Fight Club is the future of boxing. Super League (2:10): What is this new soccer proposal? Miguel Luna was known by soccer fans as a clutch scorer who brought four championships to the San Diego Sockers. Miguel was also known as the guy who brought his teammates really good tequila. “I started bringing plastic water bottles with tequila to the locker room on gameday in 2010,” reflects Miguel Luna on his championship playing days with the San Diego Sockers on the Digital Hospitality podcast. “When we were done with the games we’d celebrate with a quick shot.” That tequila in the plastic water bottles didn’t have a name in 2010. It does in 2020. The Story of CaliFino Tequila: CaliFino Tequila, a family company in the truest sense, may be to the San Diego Sockers what Gatorade is to the Florida Gators. “I introduced the team to the tequila very early on,” remembers Miguel. “Everyone wanted a bottle! I couldn’t even get a bottle myself, I had to ask my dad for some from the family stash. That’s kind of how it started.” That family stash is located in Arandas, Jalisco, Mexico where CaliFino existed amongst the Lunas before it ever existed as a business. “I come from a Mexican background, both my mom and dad were born and grew up in Mexico,” notes Miguel. “We have a close family tie with the town the where tequila is made in.” How close? Generations deep. “Back in the ‘70s, my grandfather used to hang out at these tequila distilleries on a regular basis. He became close friends with the Gonzales family who is now the tequila distillery we work with,” as Miguel tells it. Getting close to the families had to come with great perks like a special discount, right? Nope, even better. “He wasn’t getting the tequilas that were being marketed and sold, he was getting their family batch that wasn’t for sale. He’d get these special batches and that’s kind of how it got going.” As the story goes, Miguel’s grandfather – Don Jose Luna – would be privileged to all the best moonshine style tequila the family had. Over the years, Don’s taste got so good that he shared the best batches of tequila with his own family and friends. By the early 2000s, that tequila would make it to members of the Luna family in Southern California. “Everything San Diego is very close to me,” notes Miguel, foreshadowing a rich future that stems from a storied past. Growing up a huge soccer fan and pretty talented player himself, Miguel was an avid supporter of the hometown San Diego Sockers pro soccer club. By the time he was old enough to leave the house, he went on to play soccer at the University of Portland. By the time he was one semester in, he realized how much he missed home. Following his college career in the Pacific Northwest, he was back home in San Diego with soccer seemingly in the rearview. In short order, that would change. “Around 2008 is when I got to meet Phil Salvagio,” says Miguel of the local soccer star he watched as a kid. “He was tinkering with the idea of bringing the Sockers back.” Think about it: can you imagine meeting a pro athlete you looked up to as a kid and them telling you as a young adult they wanted to bring back the team? Wilder yet, what if that childhood hero said they wanted to have you on it? Like many future business propositions between Phil and Miguel, the idea would be met with laughter. How could this be true? “I grew up watching the Sockers at the Sports Arena in the ‘80s so I knew what that franchise meant,” Miguel says looking back at that fateful meeting. “It seemed a little far-fetched, but me and Phil got to know each other on a player/coach relationship first and then we became great friends.” Phil, no longer a player but now both owner and coach of the Sockers, had just secured a piece of local talent to bring the club back and eventually bring even more success to the both of them. “When Phil brought it back it was purely for the love of the game, he wanted to bring indoor soccer back to San Diego.”

Before embarking on his incredible 29-year (and counting) run as play-by-play lead for NHL hockey’s San Jose Sharks, NBC Sports California sportscaster Randy Hahn was first known to 1980s pro soccer audiences as the versatile radio and TV voice behind the short-lived Edmonton Drillers of the North American Soccer League as well as the dynastic San Diego Sockers of both the NASL and the Major Indoor Soccer League. We descend deep into the Good Seats audio archives to revisit some of the more memorable (and sometimes downright forgettable) moments from Hahn’s North American indoor and outdoor soccer broadcasting exploits, including: Covering the original NASL Vancouver Whitecaps at a commercial station while still a college student at the University of British Columbia; Answering the call for a last-minute/first-ever radio play-by-play assignment for a Drillers “outdoor” game in Houston; Learning the differences between calling slower-building outdoor matches vs. the faster-moving indoor game; Winning “One for the Thumb” – and then some - with the indoor Sockers; The coaching genius and indelible legacy of Sockers head coach Ron Newman; AND How Hahn found his “way to San Jose” with the return of pro hockey to the Bay Area. PLUS: We dig up the long-forgotten San Diego Sockers official theme song! Enjoy a FREE MONTH of The Great Courses Plus streaming video service – including the new series “Fundamentals of Photography” – created in conjunction with National Geographic!

We close out an amazing second season of episodes with a special year-end conversation featuring the US pro soccer pioneer who is, at least indirectly, responsible for the creation of this little podcast. Just weeks after signing with the fledgling New York Cosmos of the North American Soccer League in January 1976, league All Star Bobby Smith (along with fellow Philadelphia Atoms teammate Bob Rigby) was already out pounding the promotional pavement in support of his new club – including (unwittingly) a stop at host Tim Hanlon’s then-elementary school in Ho-Ho-Kus, New Jersey to hand out recreational league trophies and sign autographs. The seeds of life-long pro soccer fandom were quickly sown, soon blossoming into an obsession with America’s most famous and successful franchise – and, over time, morphing into an enduring fascination with professional teams and leagues across all sports which, like the Cosmos and the NASL, ultimately came and went. Defender extraordinaire Smith joins the podcast to discuss his remarkable American pro soccer career before, during and after winning back-to-back NASL titles (1977, 78) with the Cosmos – including: Winning his first league championship with the inaugural 1973 Philadelphia Atoms; A skills-enhancing off-season loan to Irish first division side Dundalk in 1974-75; Playing alongside world’s-best talent like Pelé, Franz Beckenbauer, Giorgio Chinaglia, and Carlos Alberto during his time in New York; Post-Cosmos stops with the NASL’s San Diego Sockers, Philadelphia Fury and Montreal Manic; Indoor soccer adventures with the MISL’s 1980-81 Philadelphia Fever; 18 caps with the US National Team during the 1970s; AND Induction into the National Soccer Hall of Fame in 2007. A big thank you to all of our great sponsors this past year – SportsHistoryCollectibles.com, OldSchoolShirts.com, 503 Sports, and Audible!

Former sportscaster and fellow defunct pro sports enthusiast Kenn Tomasch joins host Tim Hanlon to dig deep into the two-season saga of the Indiana (née Indianapolis) Twisters of the Continental Indoor Soccer League – the mid-90s summertime indoor soccer circuit hatched by a collective of team and arena owners from the NBA and NHL to keep their facilities humming during their respective “off”-seasons. CISL franchises controlled by entities outside the big-league fraternity were also part of the mix (accounting for half of the eventual 18 teams during the league’s five-year run from 1993-97) – including the tumultuously tenuous Twisters, who cycled through two separate ownership groups as well as a temporary spell of league receivership during its brief 21-month existence. As the radio “Voice of the Twisters,” Tomasch was there for all of it, including: A rousing home debut on June 21, 1996 at Indianapolis’ Market Square Arena that saw the club drop an entertaining 7-6 overtime decision to the Washington Warthogs; Dwindling announced home-game crowds of barely 2,000+ just months later; Co-owner Rodney Goins ceding his role as president mid-season to become an active player on the Twisters roster – debuting as US pro sports’ first-ever player-owner on August 23, 1996; Becoming “wards of the league” two weeks later when Goins and his co-owner brother suspend operations – and team radio broadcasts; New ownership, team name, logo, colors – and a surprising second-place regular season finish in 1997; Losing home-field playoff advantage due to a scheduling conflict, and ultimately an early exit from a potential title run; AND The abrupt folding of the venerable San Diego Sockers just days before the 1997 season that foreshadowed the CISL’s demise later in the year. This week’s episode is sponsored by Podfly and Audible.
