THE Leadership Japan Series by Dale Carnegie Training Tokyo, Japan

Smirks emerge quite quickly when you mention “role model” and “leaders” in the same breath.  Most peoples' experiences with leaders as role models have been that they encompass the “what not do as a leader” variety.  Hanmen Kyoshi (反面教師) or teacher by negative example, as we have noted in Japanese.  What are some of the things we should be focused on in our quest to become a real role model for our teams? We can break the role model aspect into four major areas: Self-Aware; Accountability; Others-Focused and Strategic.  Within these four categories, there are eleven sub-categories on which we are going to focus today.  Do a mental audit on yourself and see how many boxes you can check, acknowledging that you are doing a good job. 1.    Self-Aware covers a number of sub-categories: “Self-Directed”. Leaders have to give others direction, so they must be independent types who don't have to rely on others to know what to do.  They have to be “Self-Regulated” which is a fancy pants way of saying they need strong personal discipline.  The leader has to decide what needs to be done and then marshals everything needed to get the job done.  This effort has to be sustained over time and that is where the self-discipline aspect kicks in. “Develop Self” talks about taking 100% responsibility for one's own career.  Depending on others, or the company in general, to take care of your career is folly.  We need to represent value to an employer, because if we don't, then we will be replaced by someone who does.  The tricky thing about business is they keep moving the goalposts.  What was required when you started and what is required today may be quite different. Scarily different. I see so many senior leaders and friends sacked by the organisation, despite many years of loyal and successful service.  A new CEO arrives, a merger takes place or a new direction for the firm is set and the next thing you know, you are out.  If you have been pursuing your own personal growth, then there is a safety factor involved there to enable you to weather the storms.  If you have just been working hard, which is admirable, you are left tired and then on the street. “Confident” is a vague term, really.  What actually defines being “confident”.  We can recognise it more easily than we can articulate it.  A leader who has confidence speaks in a certain way, with gravitas, with a certain finality.  Hesitation never arises and the body language backs up the confident words. 2.    Accountability is another area with sub-categories: “Competent” describes our capability to understand the business and do the work.  Most people rise through the ranks, so they have done the jobs their staff are doing, so they know the content well.  Changing jobs and entering as a mid-career hire can sometimes make the competence piece a challenge, though.  We have to be a fast learner to build credibility. “Honesty and Integrity” are both problem sub-categories.  Honesty is easier to gauge than integrity.  We can see if you are honest and can measure it.  However, while everyone says how important integrity is, defining it is a challenging task.  Saying and doing what you say is a fundamental basis of demonstrating integrity, as is standing for higher ideals.  How do you actually behave when no one is watching?  3.    Others-Focused is a big sub-category and so not all aspects can be covered here, but we will focus on some key areas: “Inspiring” is in the eyes of the beholder, so as the boss, you have to create the environment where everyone can be inspired.  We need to uncover what the range of views on the subject are amongst the troops, to get an idea of how we need to appeal to everyone's individual needs.  This means making time to talk to people, rather than just barking out leader commands all day long. “Develops Others” means going beyond the managerial functions of everything done on time, to spec and to budget.  We have looked at this earlier. It means putting time into coaching staff and giving them stretch tasks through delegation.  Most people stay functionally at the manager level and never quite level up sufficiently to become a true leader.  Whose fault is that? I would argue it is their boss who has failed them.  The leader's job is to create other leaders, and every organisation is crying out for good leaders. “Positively Influences Others” is an all weather skill for leaders. Our grumpy mood, short temper, irritability can bring down the motivation of the team.  Also, speaking ill of other divisions or sections to knit our own team together, a weak leader favourite, makes the team doubt the robustness of the organisation. “Effectively Communicates” sounds reasonable, except most leaders are not very good at speaking in public.  They do not generate confidence in what they are saying by the unprofessional way in which they are saying it.  The solution is simplicity itself: we need to get the training to master this attribute. 4.  The last category we will cover here is Strategic. We will deal with just one sub-category “Uses Authority Appropriately”.  We are talking about using our position power for good, rather than self-aggrandisement.  Bossing people around to boost our own fragile ego and having the need for power over others is totally sad.  We are given power to help our people do better - that is the only reason.  So how was your self-audit?  We now have a framework to place around the term “role model” and we know where we have more work to do.  Always a good thing for a leader.

Serdecznie zapraszamy do odsłuchu! Uwaga: Ze względu na treść filmu w podcaście pojawia się tematyka przemocy domowej i wykorzystania seksualnego. This year is their 30th year anniversary, they are in over 100 countries, have sold over 23 million DVD's, on average perform to over 1 million people per year, have had over 2 billion YouTube streams and have sold out Madison Square Garden 12 shows over. (Coldplay in comparison managed only 3)  But our chat with Greg went a lot deeper than just The Wiggles. Greg opened up about the man behind the yellow skivvy.  Greg went deep when talking about finding spirituality especially after his health battles. It was humbling to see this side of him which we don't see in the media. We learned about his passion for happiness, education and staying true to who you are. While also having a laugh with some quick fire questions about all areas of his life!  Greg's passion nowadays is with Heart of The Nation. An initiative he created after his life was so nearly taken from him last year at a Wiggles Reunion concert for bushfire relief when he suffered a sudden cardiac arrest. Scarily, showing no symptoms before the incident occurred.  Greg is a true leader and a wonderful ambassador as you can hear in his voice the passion he has to save lives by raising awareness in the community. He shares with us how we can all get behind this excellent initiative and the work they are doing behind the scenes.  Greg is extremely humble, wise and generous with his time and we can't thank him enough for the experience. THE Leadership Japan Series by Dale Carnegie Training Tokyo, Japan

Smirks appear quite quickly when you mention “role model” and “leaders” in the same breath.  Most peoples' experiences with leaders as role models have been that they encompass the “what not do as a leader” variety.  Hanmen Kyoshi (反面教師) or teacher by negative example, as we say in Japanese.  What are some of the things we should be focused in our quest to become a real role model for our teams?   We can break the role model aspect into four major areas: Self-Aware; Accountability; Others-Focused and Strategic.  Within these four categories there are eleven sub-categories on which we are going to focus today.  Do a mental audit on yourself and see how many boxes you can check acknowledging that you are doing a good job. The tricky thing about business is they keep moving the goal posts.  What was required when you started and what is required today, may be quite different. Scarily different.  If you have been pursuing your own personal growth, then there is a safety factor involved to enable you to weather the storms.   “Confident” is a vague term really.  What actually defines being “confident”.  We can recognize it more easily than we can articulate it.  A leader who has confidence speaks in a certain way, with a certain finality.  Hesitation never arises and the body language backs up the words.   Accountability is another area with sub-categories: “Competent” describes our capability to understand the business and do the work.  Most people rise through the ranks, so they have done the jobs their staff are doing, so they know the content well.  Changing jobs and entering as a mid-career hire can make the competence piece a challenge.   “Honesty and Integrity” are both problem sub-categories.  Honesty is easier to gauge than integrity.  We can see if you are honest and can measure it.  However, while everyone says how important integrity is, defining it is a challenging task.  Saying and doing what you say, is a fundamental basis of demonstrating integrity, as is standing for higher ideals.  How do you behave when no one is watching?   Others-Focused is a big sub-category and so not all aspects can be covered here, but we will focus on some key areas:   “Inspiring” is in the eyes of the beholder, except as the boss you have to inspire everyone.  So we need to uncover what the range of views on the subject are amongst the troops, in order to get an idea of how we need to appeal to everyone's needs.   “Develops Others” means going beyond the managerial functions of everything done on time, to spec and to budget.  It means putting time into coaching staff and giving them stretch tasks through delegation.  Most people stay functionally at the manager level and never quite level up sufficiently to become a true leader.   “Positively Influences Others” is an all weather skill for leaders. Our grumpy mood can bring down the motivation of the team.  Also speaking ill of other divisions or sections to knit your own team together, makes the team doubt the robustness of the organization.   “Effectively Communicates” sounds reasonable, except most new leaders are not very good at speaking in public.  They do not generate confidence in what they are saying by the unprofessional way they are saying it.  We need to get the training and master this attribute.   The last category we will cover here is Strategic.   We will deal with just one sub-category “Uses Authority Appropriately”.  We are talking about using our position power for good, rather than self-aggrandisement.  Bossing people around to boost our own fragile ego and having the need for power over others is totally sad.  We are given power to help our people do better and that is the only reason.   So how was your self audit?  We now have a framework to place around the term “role model” and we know where we have more work to do.  Always a good thing for a leader.

PODCAST EPISODE 32: Summer Catch Up with Ben Moore (Me!), Ben's Bees, Australia The hangover of months of isolation and curfews and mask wearing and zooming still hasn't subsided for me. Like any decent hangover, it's lingering – part headache, part fuzzy recollection, part low mood. Like many extroverts with a need for other people and chats and yarning and faces and real interaction, I am STILL feeling a bit odd, unsettled, and even de-socialised from all that alone time! Has anyone else had similar thoughts? Anyway, I have been missing talking to all my favourite bee lovers and thought, why not drop in for a catch up with my beautiful bee community for episode 32 of the BEES WITH BEN beekeeping podcast! So here we are, it's just you and me. As many of you know, I do love summer. If the bees are happy, Ben is happy, and when the sun is out, our dear friends buzz about! Some poetry for you all on this sparkly day! So, in this episode I want to chat about how this year's weather cycle has affected beekeeping in Australia; the oddness and humidity and relative coolness of the La Niña weather pattern has been a blessing after the tragedy of last summer's fires, but it looks that some heat is on the way. It's important that we all know how to look after the bees when those rays hit – I recommend keeping them protected from radiant direct sun with a piece of shade cloth or umbrella. And like all animals, bees NEED water, so make sure you set up a beaut like oasis with fresh cool water and something to land on, like bark or rocks, in your bee-friendly garden. I also chat about how European wasps are starting to become active again. It's so vital that we know how to distinguish these pests from other wasps, as these little suckers are dangerous to both humans and bees. Scarily, European wasp nests can grow to be mammoth here in Australia – the Launceston museum has a preserved nest that weighs 96 kilos and is almost half the size of a small car! I also yarn about the fantastic launch of my book that happened before Christmas, and “recommend” a disastrous but marvellous horror movie directed by Irwin Allen, made in 1978 (the year I was born! How serendipitous!), called The Swarm. Check it out when you need a break from the heat! Also, make sure you SUBSCRIBE to the BEES WITH BEN beekeeping podcast, and why not leave me a lovely REVIEW! With almost 20,000 plays so far, I know that these bee tales are reaching you and I would love more than anything to hear what you are loving about the podcast so far. “We expect panic,” that’s what a Russian hacker involved in attacks on America is predicting.   As Election results unfold all across our political battlefield, there’s a massive war happening nationwide that most Americans can’t see. Hackers, cyber terrorists and information warriors from Russia and around the world are taking shots at your election machines, your electrical grid, your hospital and your laptop. Right now, as the heat in America continues to rise, our enemies are strategically starting fires and adding gasoline all across the web. From your local election system, to your Facebook page, to the hospital you depend on for COVID care, to Donald Trump’s iPhone. America’s enemies are waging a complex and expansive war against you and everyone else in America as you read this. And it won’t stop when the election is called. It will expand. The misinformation and cyber threats facing America have never been greater. And we’ve never been more fragile. Independent host Paul Rieckhoff guides you through it--and breaks down the election results with a special focus on national security.  As cyber threats swirl all around us, our guest is a guardian on the watchtower: information warfare and Russian influence expert, Molly McKew. [21:50] McKew has traveled the world studying, analyzing and advising on the most urgent cybersecurity, misinformation and technology-based threats. An adjunct professor at Georgetown University’s Edmund Walsh School of Foreign Service, McKew teaches Russian hybrid warfare. She also serves on the board of the Stand Up Republic Foundation as an advisor on countering disinformation, lead author of the Defusing Disinfo blog, and the creator of Great Power--a guide to asymmetric conflict like cyber, information, and economic warfare. McKew graduated from Stanford with a BA in Russian Language, History, and Culture, and the London School of Economics with an MSc in Russian/Post-Soviet Studies. She was awarded the Order of Honor by the President of Georgia for her service in defense of Georgian democracy. The future is here. It’s fascinating. And it’s dangerous. McKew is a thoughtful, sharp, experienced voice to break down how attacks and bad actors are impacting our elections now. And how they might impact you and your family in the days to come. She’s also got incredible stories from her journey’s around the world, a special sword on her wall, and a fun favorite drink answer. If one should assess Senator Joseph McCarthy's success by the number of ardent Communists revealed by his investigations in the late 1940s and early 1950s to be operating in the United States government, the only possible conclusion is that he was a pathetic failure. The harm he did to individuals, and the lives his actions forced to a premature end, are yet shamefully legion. A hundred books later, along comes Larry Tye's biography of McCarthy, Demagogue. Tye's reading of McCarthy's private papers sheds new light on a man who attacked his opponents ruthlessly and when challenged over a lie, lied some more, and kept far more senior and able colleagues in a state of permanent fear. Tye writes “his rise and reign… go a long way to explain the astonishing ascension of President Donald J. Trump.” As we hear in this newest RHODcast, the parallels are horribly familiar.“Demagogue” is published in the UK on August 16, 2020.

This week's guest, Emile Fourie, is focused on looking at waste differently. Emile is the CEO & Co-Founder of Ywaste, a company that specialised in Food Waste Management by transforming wasted food into organic compost. Ywaste started as a small company that manufactured domestic-scale worm farms, but in just 8 years they transformed into a substantial operation that diverts more than 1 500 tons of food waste from landfills each year. Scarily, 90% of South Africa’s food waste ends up in landfills, and soon we’ll be running out of space. Emile is a visionary and believes he has a globally relevant solution to our food waste crisis. Through making compost he is not only reducing the food waste contribution to landfills, but also enables the replenishment of the earth. I feel like I went down another rabbit hole with this one or took another red pill. I learnt a lot from our conversation and walked away with a feeling that I need to do more by way of reducing my impact and a good measure of inspiration to do so.

G’Day everyone – Welcome to ScIQ on TYT Network. In today’s society, people are very concerned about race. Is Elizabeth Warren really Native American? Is Mitt Romney really human? Or a cyborg sent from planet nine? But if you thought you owned that DNA test, think again, because by getting a test done you just lost the rights to your genetic data! Recently news came out that FamilyTreeDNA shared it’s databank of 2 million people with the FBI – so if you’ve taken a DNA test and were planning to murder someone, you might want to reconsider. Now, I think we all agree that solving crimes is good. But the Family Tree database is also free to access and can be used by anyone, which you probably didn’t know when you spat on that q-tip. Yes, Public DNA databases are a real thing, and they are a big risk to your privacy risks.Scarily, the FBI can also use the database to find the relatives of criminals, and then use those relatives to find the real suspect. Now, people who get their DNA tested don’t often realize that they’ve also consented to release their genetic data to that testing company. Just like Facebook owns your usage data, about when you’ve been shopping for halloween costumes for dogs, the DNA testing company now owns your genetic data, and can theoretically do whatever they want with it. If that sounds crazy, it’s not. This industry is so new that it’s hasn’t been regulated yet. Experts agree that “There is no legal limit on what they could do” with that information.Ancestry.com, 23 & Me – this is all the Wild West. Congress hasn’t even had a chance to catch up – and we’re all like “take me genetic code and take my money!!” Which brings up the fun issue of genetic privacy. The stuff we’re paying companies to take – it could be worth billions. For example, testing companies could sell your data to insurers, who can then deny you health insurance or life insurance based on your genetic profile. “Sorry sir, your results show you’re at risk of cancer – you can f*ck off! Next!” And it’s not just DNA testing that’s a potential problem. In the past few years, all the biggest tech companies have all made moves to get into the health sector. Google’s head of AI Jeff Dean was quoted as saying, "Healthcare is the single biggest white space for Google to move into."Microsoft have just partnered with Walgreens to hold your medical information in the cloud. Amazon has created the ABC Initiative with Berkshire Hathaway and Chase Bank, with the intention of revolutionizing healthcare by creating value from health data – what could possibly go wrong? And Uber has launched Uber Health to potentially replace ambulances. Ambulance Pool, anyone? 20% cheaper than a regular Ambulance, and triple the blood! Now I love technology, it’s what brings my to your screen. But tech companies aren’t known for their respect for privacy, so I might as well just tell you about my raging thrush infection now, because if Instagram’s gonna be in charge of protecting my medical records, they’ll be on Facebook next week. What? That’s not even that gross – you know what is gross?? Having to look at the inside of someone’s uterus everytime they get knocked up. No Sharon, I don’t want to see your reproductive organs on my newsfeed! There are big concerns about genetic privacy, and just liked no one cared about email server security until Benghazi, it’s likely no one will care about genetic security until someone in a garage in Galverston starts making little Hitler clones.
