Joining the show this week is a hospitality professional who creates distinct projects that make emotional connections with guests. Please welcome to the show, Senior Director of Design & Construction Services at Kempinski, Vibha Sawhney.Vibha joins Host Dan Ryan to discuss how she creates luxury projects that meet the needs of owners. Vibha also shares the importance of collaborative empathy, the value of meticulous attention to detail, and explores Kempinski's unique approach to luxury.Takeaways: Hospitality involves providing the highest level of service where the guest is considered supreme. For an architect, design and architecture are tools to craft unforgettable and comfortable memories for guests, emphasizing their supreme importance. To gain hands-on experience and a deeper understanding of materials, immerse yourself in working alongside skilled tradespeople like carpenters and metal workers. Understanding how they work allows you to better utilize a material in planning. The key to success is selecting the right partners who will give proper attention to your projects and act with empathy toward the end-users. It is essential to work collaboratively to achieve the best results and support the owner's vision.A successful property requires exceptional service across all locations and maintaining high standards in essential areas like breakfast and room comfort. Consideration must be given to space constraints, ensuring comfortable environments in smaller spaces. While many brands have a clear and defined aesthetic that should be designed for, your job is ultimately to work with an owner to tie their vision together. Successful collaboration blends both brand design and owner desires. Hotels are ultimately an ecosystem that requires collaboration between various functions and backgrounds to function properly. Collaboration can only happen if empathetic understanding is found between employees. Quote of the Show:“We are really open to understanding what the owner and the owner's team wants to do in a project.” - Vibha SawhneyLinks:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/vibha-sawhney/ Website: https://www.kempinski.com/enShout Outs:1:43 - Kristen Conry: https://www.linkedin.com/in/conry/ 1:45 - Hyatt: https://www.hyatt.com/ 13:25 - Samuel Creations20:22 - Marina Residences Dubai: https://www.kempinski.com/en/development/upcoming-openings/kempinski-marina-residences-dubai 20:27 - International Design Associates: https://www.ida-global.com/ 25:24 - Marriott: www.marriott.com 25:25 - Hilton: https://www.hilton.com/ 30:13 - Çırağan Palace Kempinski Istanbul: https://www.kempinski.com/en/ciragan-palace 31:05 - Kempinski Palace Engelberg Titlis Swiss Alps: https://www.kempinski.com/en/kempinski-palace-engelberg Ways to Tune In: Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/0A2XOJvb6mGqEPYJ5bilPXApple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/defining-hospitality-podcast/id1573596386Google Podcasts: https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZGVmaW5pbmdob3NwaXRhbGl0eS5saXZlL2ZlZWQueG1sAmazon Music: https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/8c904932-90fa-41c3-813e-1cb8f3c42419

Welcome, everyone, to another episode of The Tearsheet Podcast, where we explore financial services together with an eye on technology, innovation, emerging models, and changing expectations. I'm Tearsheet's editor in chief, Zack Miller. This episode of The Tearsheet Podcast delves into the evolving financial landscape for Gen Z, focusing on their transition from debit to credit usage. Bunita Sawhney, Global Head of Consumer Products and Processing at Mastercard, shares insights from her presentation at the Tearsheet Gen Z Symposium, emphasizing the increasing role of women in financial decision-making. We explore Gen Z's preference for debit cards over credit cards, driven by factors like control and familiarity.  Bunita highlights the importance of partnerships and innovative strategies to engage Gen Z, advocating for financial literacy initiatives and alternative credit-building solutions like installment plans and Buy Now, Pay Later options. The discussion also touches on Mastercard's collaborations with fintech firms like Greenlight and Juvo to promote financial education and inclusion among younger demographics. Ultimately, the podcast aims to shed light on the challenges and opportunities in catering to Gen Z's financial needs and preferences. The big ideas Gen Z's Influence in Financial Decision Making: "To this day, 90% of payment decisions or household buying decisions are made by or with women. And that's true for Gen Z as well. Over 25% of women say that they are the sole decision-maker in their household's financial decisions." Gen Z's Digital and Social Natives: "It is a really special moment, not only because we're on the cusp of International Women's Day, so happy International Women's Day to all of you. And I do like to think not only about the women in our company and how we serve and support them, but the women who we and our product support and serve as well, because I'll spend a minute on that as I transition us over into Gen Z."  Preference for Debit Cards: "Debit is still the most accepted and the largest payment vehicle and the most consistently used all around the world. And that is true also for our Gen Z consumers. Why? Because it meets some of their critical needs, it meets their need for control, it meets their need for understanding and having control over their payments."  Importance of Credit Building: "Credit doesn't have to revolve first of all, right? We know now with the advent and the absolute take-off of installment solutions, and buy now pay later solutions, that there's plenty of easy ways to have access to short, non-APR related ways to pay in four, pay in six without a fee or without an APR as an example." Financial Literacy and Education: "We know that 52% of Gen Z consumers worry about financial security. That's twice as much as the generations before them -- two times more worry." Partnerships and Innovation: "We're in a different place with a different level of information flow with a really curious group, that are finding ways to inform themselves through social platforms, as I said, and others through influencers, who we need to continue to partner with more so than ever." Here's my conversation with Mastercard's Bunita Sawhney.

Priya Sawhney is an organizer, poet, and co-founder of both The Sanctuary Initiative and Direct Action Everywhere (DxE). She is also one of my best friends on earth, and the person I've entrusted with the two beings I love more than any other – my dog Oliver and my cat Joan – as I face off with Smithfield in the trial that may change my life. For that reason, she will not be joining me in Utah. Oliver's trauma has left him trusting of very few human beings. He needs her more than I do. Joan, who went blind and is probably near his end of life, requires round-the-clock care. But even as her physical presence will be missing, her spirit will be strong. And we tell the story in this conversation about another trial, in which the force of Priya's spirit arguably saved me from prison. Whether that happened or not – or whether it will happen in this case – there is a bigger point to that story. At every point in history, there are a nearly limitless number of possible futures. Every choice we make causes a split in the universe, towards futures filled with either cruelty or compassion. This is what theoretical physicists call the multiverse, and it's as weird as it sounds. The power of Priya's spirit is that it bends all of these branches towards compassion. It may very well be why I'm not sitting in a prison today, and it may save me from prison over the next few days. Because when people feel what Priya feels, what you and I feel, and what the animals feel, they are moved to act. This will likely be my last podcast before the verdict, and perhaps the last podcast (with my voice) in a long time. But remember: the podcast will continue, in Priya's voice (while sometimes reading my words), no matter what happens in Utah. And so long as you keep speaking your truth, we will prevail – and the multiverse will bend towards compassion. Priya Sawhney - How Animal Agriculture Projects Violence

Soon the state will be presenting evidence against Priya Sawhney regarding an alleged “conspiracy” to burglarize and steal animals from some of the largest factory farms in the U.S., including Petaluma Poultry – the largest organic poultry producer in the nation. All of the animals from Petaluma Poultry were unable to stand. Some had rotting, gaping wounds, including some so deep and necrotic that we could see their exposed bone. This was verified by the state's own veterinarian, yet instead of charging the company, one of the largest in Sonoma County, California, the government has come after Priya and others (including me) for setting up a veterinary tent and giving the animals care. The comic book villainy in this case would almost be funny if it didn't have dire consequences. First, Priya and I face felony charges and potentially years in prison. But second, and more importantly, the government's response here shows how the industry and government are acting to manipulate the public – what Priya calls “projection” – into supporting practices that, if they saw them first hand, would inspire outrage and horror. But the projection goes deeper than that. Because it's not just lies about facts. It's a lie about who we are, as a community, as a species, and as individual human beings. I don't want to say too much more because it'll give way what unfolds in this podcast. Give it a listen. I think you'll enjoy it as much as I did. And you'll see why, like so many, I am inspired by Priya every day, and honored to have her as a co-founder of DxE, and a dear friend.
